KMYCYOUR CLUB News June 2014 From Commodore Jim Murphy Spreading of Life Member Audrey Armitage’s ashes off Lion Is- land: In the March Newsletter I advised of the passing of Life Member, Audrey Armitage. Vice Commodore Phil Alchin offered his vessel to Audrey’s family to spread her ashes off Lion Island. This event took place on the morn- ing of Sunday 18 th May 2014. Accompanying Audrey’s nieces Sue Curry and Denise Hinds with husband Ray were Past Commodore and Life Member, Ian Renton with Bernice, Past Commodore John Goddard with Pauline, Commodore Jim Murphy with Lorraine and Phil’s partner Linda. Below is a thank you note received from the family. On behalf of the Armitage family, we would like to thank the Kuring -Gai Motor Yacht Club and a special mention to Philip Alchin for the use of his magnificent boat, Chiquita II, for making it possible for us to honour our Aunt Audrey Armitage’s final wish for her ashes to be scattered off Lion Island. As you all know Audrey was a life member of the Club and this is where her heart was, with Kuring-Gai Motor Yacht Club and her beloved boat “Karana”. It was a beautiful day, on Sunday the 18 th May 2014 when Audrey’s family met the clubs executive committee and wives on Chiquita II. We were very impressed with such a lovely boat and knew from that point that Audrey would be truly happy with the events of the day. Chiquita II met us at Brooklyn wharf and the ease of boarding the boat and the swift departure was very impressive. We cruised towards Lion Island where a pod of dolphins joined us for the ride knowing the importance of the day. We knew Audrey was with us as she calmed the waters and brought the sun out from behind the clouds she also would have appreciated the club committee being dressed in their whites. It was decided where around Lion Island my sister Sue and I would scatter her ashes with my husband Ray guiding us ready with pop- ping the champagne cork to wish her well in her new home. Chiquita II then took us back to America Bay, where we moored for tea and cake. This bought back a flood of memories, for my family and I had spent many a Saturday afternoon/night moored in and around America Bay, Refuge Bay amongst many others. It was then a trip back to Brooklyn on our way home again. We all felt that Audrey would be nodding in approval of the morn- ing, and once again, thanks to the KMYC and the crew on board Chiquita II. Life Members: The recent Special General Meeting held late May to elect Ken Stubbs and Alan Pears as two new Life mem- bers to the Club was attended by 18 members. A special guest at the meeting was Margie Stubbs. Ken’s nomination was made on recommendation of the General Committee and Ian Renton initially wrote to the General Committee asking it to consider the appointment of Alan Pears. The Commodore asked Ian to speak to the meeting on Alan’s achievements and his service to the Club during his 25 year membership. Phil Alchin was then invited to speak on the appointment of Ken.

On the recommendation of the General Committee a vote by

show of hands was taken with a unanimous result to appoint Life

Membership of the Kuring-Gai Motor Yacht Club to both Ken

Stubbs and Alan Pears. The Commodore called on Margie to ac-

cept Ken’s Life Membership Badge and also called Alan forward

and also presented his Life Membership badge. Margie, on behalf

of herself and family and Alan both thanked the General Commit-

tee and the meeting for the honour received. Ian Renton re-

ceived his Life Membership at a S.G.M. at Hallett’s Beach on Aus-

tralia Day, 2006 but never received a badge. Phil Alchin called

Ian forward again and made the presentation of the Life Member

badge. Refer photo below of an image of the badges presented.

End of Season Dinner and Awards Night: A full house, Eighty six

members and friends registered for the End of Season Dinner &

Awards night. This number was very pleasing to the hard work-

ing Social committee and was a considerable increase on the past

few years. I am absolutely amazed on how the talented ladies of

the S. C. can dress up the Clubhouse and make it look very spec-

tacular. We had the red carpet, the press photographer, the gold

cloth background around the stage, movie cameras and a great

MC with a red bow tie.

After being photographed at the entrance and on the red carpet, all guests, that included many new members, were then wel-comed with a glass of Champagne before mingling with the other guests prior to sitting down for an excellent dinner pro-vided by new caterers “Cookbook Catering” (recommended by Jenny Aiken). We have also received many favourable compliments on the quality and presentation presented by “Cookbook Catering”. This year as well as the Rally award presentation (Refer Rally separate attachment) other special award presentations were made throughout the evening. MC Ian Renton, expertly Inter-spersed the presentation and interviewing of the recipients of the following special awards during the dining breaks. These awards certainly added to the merriment of the guests. The pho-tos of these awards can be viewed at the KMYC website. http://www.kmyc.com.au/galleries

Ducky Awards - Presented to Phil Harding, Chris Jenson and John Colquhoun

Timber Zimmer award to Russell Tyler for 40 years of travel to and from Cottage Point

Fabulous Varnish award for roughest varnish job to Bill Carmody

Seagull Farmer of the year presented to John Spry

Handy Men of the Year presented to Alan Judge and Keith Davison (Janet accepted)

Frequent Fryer frying pan to Garry and Dawn Sexton for the fishing day and fish fry

Pi$$ Poor Packing Award presented to Chris Perdue for leaving gear at the Colo

Cleanliness award to Julie Lendrum for washing the self-inflating key float

Bull Shifter award for Colo bull wrangling presented to yours truly

Lucky Door prize was won by Louise King Throughout the evening the guests were entertained by an ex-cellent Duo “Minor Variations”. Minor Variations comprises of Renee and Liam French. Renee is

member, Glenn Dodson’s daughter and Liam works with Glenn

at Roland Music. Playing the standards of the 50’s & 60’s, the

Classics of the 70’s & 80’s right through to the dance hits of the

90’s and today, they certainly entertained and got many people

    up on the dance floor.

The tender service offered to members was also very popular although Chris Perdue had, not quite a ducky experience, but someone dropped his bag with his Marine Rescue uniform as he boarded Cocktail III after disembarking from the George. He was on duty at M.R. Sunday morning and was last seen walking around the waterfront in the sun trying to dry off. A very enjoyable evening indeed.

Result of Photo Competition: On a more serious note at the End of Season Dinner, Phil Alchin presented Cathy Walsh with her movie camera for her winning Colo photo from the Photo com-petition. The judges once again had a tough time making a deci-sion from the many excellent photos received.

Project Work: I am also pleased to advise that three major pro-jects are almost complete. The lawn levelling in front of the Clubhouse has been completed to a high standard and all that remains is to plant hedging along the edge of the wall and also installation of bollard lighting along the edge of the wall and also along the pathway to the waterfront. Watering spray nozzles have also been installed along the same edges as can be seen in the stairway photo. Compare the photos below with the col-lapsed wall photos that were published in my November 2013 Newsletter. It all should look great for our upcoming 2014 Season Opening Day in late September.

The Sand Filter Tank has been installed on the base installed by Keith and it is expected to have the filter sand loaded into the tank by the Clubs Water Consultants, Oliver-Higgins Wastewater within the next two weeks. This will then see the completion of the contaminated water issue experience by the Club in early January this year. Alan Judge, in the photo below, is seen making the final connec-tions to the Fire Hose Reel mounted in the area adjacent to the front club entrance. Another Fire Hose Reel has also been con-nected and is mounted close to the garden adjacent the second water storage tank near the Gazebo. Both these reels are con-nected to the middle tank via the new Fire Pump system. Prior to the recent board meeting, Keith Davison demonstrated the power of this pump to Phil Alchin and myself by connecting a 2” fire hose to the running pump and the output via a variable spray nozzle, from a powerful jet to a broad mist spray was very im-pressive. Many thanks once again Keith and Alan for your com-bined talents in completing these projects to the highest stan-dard for the protection of the Clubs facilities and for the benefit of the members.

Membership: Not a good month, with six boat owning members plus one Social member resigning and one member with a change of membership to Remote member. I am aware of three members that are selling their boats. Is this a sign of the times? On a positive note, we welcome new member, Peter Howell & his wife Mel. The Howells own a 48ft Holmes. Annual General Meeting: The AGM notice has been mailed to boat owning members early June with the nomination and Proxy forms. Once again this year, KMYC will not be posting the Annual Report and as per previous years this is available from the Clubs website. http://www.kmyc.com.au/annual-report-2014/

St John’s Church at the Colo: At the 2014 Easter visit to the Colo, a young couple who had just purchased tho old church spoke to John Spry in regards to a plaque that mentions KMYC’s Easter Sunday’s visits to the Church. I believe KMYC also built a veranda onto the side of the church.

Rob Harrington-Johnson has asked Noel Shields to write two Histories. One, the history of KMYC's visits to St. John's church and the other is the history of the visits "Up the Colo".

I am sure Noel would appreciate any photos or articles on either the church or the Club’s visits to the Colo since 1957. I have pro-vided photos from 2006 – 2014 with a few years missing when one or two of the previous Riverdance did not make the trip. Taking a saying from Ronnie Corbett as he used to say to Ronnie Barker at the end of their “Two Ronnie’s” TV show – "Well it's goodbye from me..." and "...and it's goodbye from him!" This is my final newsletter as the 37th Commodore of this great boating Club – Kuring-Gai Motor Yacht Club. I am no writer, but I have tried to add some colour and information to my newslet-ters for the information and benefit of all members. I hope you have enjoyed them.

It was during the 2006 Easter Colo trip that John Garran ap-proached me (over a few glasses of fine red, no doubt) to be-come a member of the board. I have enjoyed the previous eight years, two as a committee member then the last six as a Flag Officer. It has been a pleasure working for you, the members. Thank you all for your friendship and support over these years. I wish the incoming Flag Officers and Committee fair winds and following seas. You will see me during my “exit year” on the committee.

Yours in boating and soon to be the twelfth living Feather Duster.

    Jim Murphy
