KONGSBERG is a major supplier of DP (Dynamic Positioning), navigation & maneuvering systems, automation and surveillance solutions,
process automation, satellite navigation and hydroacoustics. By building on our experience as a supplier of real maritime equipment and systems,
we have for 35 years developed high quality simulation solutions. As an innovator in the world of maritime simulation, we have a long
tradition of cooperation with ship owners and training centres worldwide and today we stand as a solid international market leader of maritime, offshore and naval ship simulators. KONGSBERG is dedicated to develop and full the simulation needs of the offshore industry.
Competence saves money and the environmentFor offshore vessel owners and operators, competence is the key to safety, reliability and economy. Safety reduces the risk of injuries to
personnel and minimises the risk of damage to the environment. Reliability minimises the ever increasing cost of being off-hire; and well-
trained competent personnel improve the efciency and economy of offshore operations. Onboard training using real equipment presents
a number of challenges, such as increased risk to personnel and equipment. Limited access to expensive marine assets and the high cost of
training offshore are causing customers to turn increasingly to simulation technology as a cost-effective alternative. By using todays simulation
solutions from KONGSBERG, personnel competence can be achieved in a safer manner, with greater scheduling exibility and economies of
scale.
Educating the best personnelCompared to conventional training, simulators offer a more structured method of building high levels of competence. During simulation training, one
can isolate and freeze each sub-system to understand and acquire knowledge, perform critical operations repeatedly and develop attitudes by
training on critical operations demanding complex decision making. Through the use of advanced assessment systems, simulator training can
help to isolate areas requiring improvement and support the development of tailor-made exercises for critical as well as day-to-day operations.
In this way, the training will focus on bringing out the best in every student.
KONGSBERGs solutionKONGSBERG believes in cooperation with customers to ensure that use of our simulators will reect real operations and maximise the time
and money spent. Today, our range of simulators includes training solutions for e.g., navigation, anchor handling, crane and winch operations,
DP, tugging, engine room and cargo & ballast handling. All our simulators provide high delity real-time simulation, supporting safe and
cost-efcient training of offshore crew and system specialists. Trainees experience great realism through the use of physical modelling with
true forces and collision detection. Faults and alarms have cascading effects throughout systems if not acknowledged properly. In addition to
high levels of realism, KONGSBERG simulators offer user-friendliness and exibility. These are key features for providing simulators suitable for
competence training as well as studies, operation planning and verication of work procedures for ship owners, operators and training centres
worldwide.

The worlds most advanced simulatorThe KONGSBERG Offshore Vessel Simulator offers the industry a
complete training system that increases competence, reduces vessel
down-time and avoids mistakes that cause accidents and damage toequipment.
The simulator is especially designed to train in best practice and to
build competence even for the most critical operations. It is a perfect
tool for offshore vessel crew to enhance skills on special tasks as well
as for team training. It makes mission-planning and training of safety
procedures possible before executing real operations for normal as
well as for the extreme situations that will be experienced in the rugged
offshore environment.
The importance of realismThe simulators instrumentation looks, functions and feels like the
real equipment used in the offshore industry. Optimal realistic vessel
movements are achieved in the hydrodynamic offshore vessel models
with real-time stability calculations and full dynamic loading, with
effects such as over-icing, crane operations and ballast system. Physical
design and modelling with interaction/friction between the vessel
and objects such as chain, wire, anchor, shackle etc. gives the feeling
of being onboard a real offshore vessel.
The simulator can visualise aft and forward bridge views, by toggling
during the exercise. It takes full advantage of the KONGSBERG
SeaView visual system, known for its very high degree of realism
in details, depth perception, motions and the ability to create the
various conditions experienced at sea. The level of detail found in
SeaView is unique in ship simulation and meets the requirements of
the most demanding navigational tasks.
Maximum exibilityThe KONGSBERG Offshore Vessel Simulator allows modular design
and is scalable from a PC desktop to a full mission ships bridge
system. Several ships bridge simulators can be connected together
to train ship-to-ship interaction as well as multi-vessel coordinated
operations. The instructor system can be operated from one or several
stations based on the training requirements, e.g., when running a
training scenario with multiple vessels.
KONGSBERG has developed a set of standard instrument panels and
bridge equipment complete with controls and functions necessary
to train operations such as tugging, towing, anchor handling and
offshore supply.
Customised solutions, such as individual bridge lay-out, congu-
ration and integration to real ships bridge equipment are available.
The offshore simulator includes power management and can be
integrated with other KONGSBERG and third party simulators to allow
crew to perform simulator training 1:1 with the real offshore vessel
environment.

The Instructor SystemThe Instructor System is designed to enhance the quality of simulation
training by providing complete, intuitive and user-friendly control
of student exercises. It enables the instructor to develop customisedexercise modules for individuals, teams or a combination of both, with
fully controllable areas such as:
Initial condition dene all the variables at the start of the exercise
(ship model, exercise area, targets, equipment on deck, etc)
Student station conguration dene what information is accessible
and visible to students
Actions derived from Input variables and malfunctions, that can
be initiated instantaneously, or pre-programmed as part of the
exercise, e.g., engine breakdown or loose/stuck wire in the winch
Underwater view - observe the realistic behaviour of the chain and
anchor below the water to monitor the students performance
Men on deck control - control movement and actions of vessel
deck crew
Crane operation control - take the role of crane operator on a
drilling rig or onboard the vessel, of communication with the bridge
Rig winch operators - role of winch operator on a drilling rig
Tow master - take the role of tow master, located on a drilling rig
Assessment monitor and assess alarms, and any of the variables
in the simulation models
Recording of all activity during the simulation exercise takes place
automatically. Review/debrieng can include the replay of the entireexercise or any selected segments in order to focus on specic
learning objectives. A unique resume function allows for an exercise
to be stopped and started at any time. If a student begins to fail in a
particular operation, the instructor can pause the simulation to give
guidance or advice. The instructor can also go back to any earlier
point in time and restart from there. With the KONGSBERG Instructor
System, monitoring, assessment and debrieng has never been easier.
Detailed ship models, targets and objectsThe KONGSBERG Offshore Vessel Simulator is a result of the companys
strong focus on R&D, ensuring that the delity of the modelling is as
accurate and realistic as possible. Our hydrodynamic modelling ensuresthat the vessel reacts in full six-degrees of freedom according to
the forces from wave action, current and wind; and applies real-time
stability calculations.
KONGSBERG offers a large selection of relevant vessels, platforms,
cranes, helicopters, buoys and other special objects, which allows creation
of the perfect training situation. Controlled from the Instructor Station,
target ships are highly detailed. They are capable of showing various
day symbols and lighting congurations indicating their status, activity
and type of operation. The available KONGSBERG database modeling
workstation enables users to create their own highly detailed visual
models.
Multiple exercise areasTo ensure realistic, quality training based on simulation, it is necessary
to have geographical exercise areas that correspond exactly to the
environments one will experience in real life operations. KONGSBERG
has the worlds largest library of exercise areas with new areas added
on a continuous basis. Common exercise areas supplied with the
Offshore Vessel Simulator include, radar, depth, buoy, chart and visual
les. By using the Student Field Chart, exercise areas such as oil elds
can be created to t local requirements for DP and anchor operations.

Anchor Handling SimulationIt is possible to carry out realistic training on critical anchor handling
operations under safe conditions using the KONGSBERG OffshoreVessel Simulator.
The simulator provides a range of anchor models, wires, chains
and bre ropes realistically modelled according to real physics and
interaction between objects, all based on the tension and forces of
real equipment.
Whether you choose a full mission or a desktop system, the students
or employees will learn a vast variety of skills thanks to the pedagogical
values and high delity realism our simulator system offers.
At our Kongsberg Offshore Vessel Simulator, our students have broken equipment worth almost 180million US Dollars during the last 10 years. If we have prevented just 5% of these accidents from happening in
real life, we still will have saved Maersk Supply Service millions and millions of dollars.

Dynamic Positioning SimulationA seagoing vessel is subject to the forces of wind, waves and current and
those generated by the propulsion system. The DP system calculates the
forces that the thrusters must produce in order to control the vesselsmotion, so the competence of DP operators is therefore essential.
The KONGSBERG Offshore Vessel Simulator can be fully integrated
with the KONGSBERG DP System. It exactly mirrors the real-life DP
systems that KONGSBERG has installed on hundreds of vessels,
making it possible to perform complete training covering platform
support, realistic offshore loading operations, close proximity
operations in offshore oilelds and emergency manoeuvres.
In addition to the DP application offered with the KONGSBERG
Offshore Vessel Simulator, various simulators for DP training are
available, including:

Ballast Handling SimulationHandling of a Semi-Submersible Platform is a demanding and complex
task. Technical, commercial, environmental and safety requirements
will always represent critical, and often conicting, factors that mustbe dealt with during the platform operations. This places immense
pressure on personnel, and demands a clear understanding of system
operations in all conditions; simulation.
The purpose of KONGSBERGs ballast handling simulator is to provide a
training tool that gives a realistic replication of the dynamic behavior
of a mobile drilling platform for ballast and position keeping systems.
In this manner, knowledge in ballast control can be acquired without
hazardous or devastating consequences.
