Meckelborg’s Rental Agreement -a new way to mark productsMeckelborg Oy, Finland a member of the Klinger®Group

When it comes to productmarking, investment is athing of the past. Now,MECKELBORG’s RentalAgreement offers an alter-native - a completely newway to deal with the highstandard of product mark-ing, especially when timesare tough.

Everybody has to mark theirproducts. But marking varies a lot. It de-pends on the industry, the product, pack-age or pallet labelling, and also on the ad-dress or serial number coding. Every day,we are confronted by a bewildering rangeof different markings. Those markings allrequire different machines, installations, software, equipment and materials. Andthey all take up a lot of time.

MECKELBORG offers an alterna-tive. At MECKELBORG, we have created anew concept that takes care of productmarking once and for all. So customers nolonger have to invest in product markingequipment. Now they can choose the RentalAgreement that allows them to maintainhigh quality in product marking, but withno need to invest. The Agreement includeseverything a company could possibly need- planning, software, machines, mainte-nance, and thanks to our own production, even labels. Customers must only pay for

the actual marking. And they will alwayshave access to thebest possible markingequipment.

With thisagreement, we aim tosatisfy all our custom-ers’ marking and cod-ing needs, leavingthem to concentrateon their core busi-ness. No more worriesabout services andspare parts, or even

Aseko Oy, FinlandThe renovation project - la-belled ”Tarra 3” has equipped the papermachine with a pre-calender, bladecoater, fluidised bed drier, web-dryer, softcalender, and reeler. The Tarra 3 projectalso covered the realisation of a new dis-charge and water system for the PK3,along with the modernisation of the ex-isting super-calender and the fitting of anew length cutter.

2002 saw a major renovation of the PK3 paper machine atUPM-Kymmene in Jämsänkoski.

the high cost of capital. MECKELBORGtakes care of everything.

The idea behind the Rental Agree-ment was developed in Norway byMECKELBORG OY Subsidiary MECKEL-BORG Norge A/S, which now has manysatisfied Rental Agreement customersthroughout the country. Such a major suc-cess presents us with an excellent oppor-tunity in Finland, too.

So we are building on that expe-rience and introducing the same conceptto the Finnish market. ■

Aseko’s delivery of the approxi-mately 1400 valves used in the Tarra 3project took place between the end of 2002and the beginning of 2003 and includedmanual and automatic Somas segment, balland butterfly valves, as well as KLINGERball valves with El-o-matic pneumatic ac-tuators. According to UPM-Kymmene’sproject team, ASEKO’s valve deliveries ex-ceeded the all expectations. ■

  • The Eynard Robin Groupe comprising Eynard Robin inLyon, Imperator Industries in Oucques, Provence Jointsin Aix-en-Provence and the cutting facility in Chalampéwill market KLINGER’s sealing products such asKLINGERSIL®, KLINGERtop-chem, KLINGER®Expandedgraphite, KLINGER®Maxiflex spiral wound gaskets andKLINGER®Sealex in France and the French territories.

Most of our KLINGER colleagueswill be aware that we have had more than afew minor difficulties both in France andin the former French colonies due to thedemise of our long-standing partners. However, we have now signed a long-termagreement with the Eynard Robin Groupe, which has its head office in Lyon - a loca-tion in the heart of France that, for us, isabsolutely ideal. With the help and sup-port of these new and first-rate partners,we have now been able to put those pro-blems firmly behind us.

During a constructive one-yeartrial period that ended in total success,KLINGER put pressure on the Eynard RobinGroupe to develop its infrastructure. Tak-ing its cue from the old saying: “Put yourmoney where your mouth is”, that is ex-actly what Eynard Robin has done.

Of course, KLINGER personnelalso had an important role to play, so ourthanks must go to the various KLINGERteams who gave us their full support. Atthe same time, we should not forget to ac-knowledge that our previous partners cre-ated a position that enabled us to recoverour market share reasonably quickly.

The Eynard Robin Groupe nowoperate four companies from four sites. Theprincipal KLINGER Group collaborator isEyrDis. This company distributes all thesoft and metal sealing throughout France- the advantage being that even perceivedcompetitors are comfortable with EyrDis asthe supply source. EyrDis, with DanielVittecoq as the KLINGER Manager, has 70distributors throughout the country.

Eynard Robin (Lyon) mainly op-erate within the very important Lyon area,

where there is a heavy concentration ofpetrochemical facilities, pharmaceuticalcompanies and closely associated opera-tions. Because this part of the business isgrowing so fast, there are already ideasabout doubling the size of the Lyon opera-tion.

Imperator Industries is located inOucques, 160 kms southwest of Paris inthe Loire Valley (Orléans and Chartres arenearby). This part of the operation special-ises in OEM business and has particularmetal skills. A huge new building with ad-ditional covered space of 1000 m² is cur-rently under construction in Oucques witha scheduled completion date of June 2004.

Provence Joints is located in thedelightful area of Aix-en-Provence, closeto Marseille - another key area for petro-chemical activities and a gateway to theFrench-speaking North African countries.Eynard Robin is pleased to announceits success in obtaining the Shellcontract for the French market.

We would like to offer our thanksand congratulations to the President ofEynard Robin, Monsieur Patrick Bedos, who is ably supported by Daniel Vittecoq,Patrick Lagorsse and Jean FrançoisDésormière. ■

  • New business with General ValveSaidi, Spain a member of the Klinger®Group

The beginning of 2003 saw thecommencement of business with the Gen-eral Valve Company as the supplier of theTwin Seal valve. This is a male pin valve ofthe non-lubricated type with elastic seal, characterised by the double-block anddrain mode of operation. The advantage ofthe Twin Seal valve’s design is its repara-bility, with maintenance work being carriedout from the upper or lower part withoutthe need to remove the valve from the line. The General Valve Company’s quality con-trol system conforms to the ISO 90011standard. Further certifications are: API6FA/BS 6755, MIL-V-12003 approval andAPI 6ED/Q1.- So far, Twin Seal valves havebeen supplied to CLH Aviación S.A. for thenew Hydrant System Project and Corsan-Corviam Construcción S.A. for the EastDock Platform, both at Barajas Airport,Madrid. ■

    Co-operation securesmarket for insulation kits

    Klinger S.p.A., Italy

KLINGER SpA has recently in-creased sales of the insulation kits pro-duced by KLINGER Ltd. UK. These kits aredesigned to limit chemical corrosion inplumbing systems due to contact with vari-ous metals, and to insulate them from elec-trostatic charges. The encouraging initialresults are the result of a campaign of closeand mutually beneficial technical and com-mercial co-operation between staff atKLINGER SpA and KLINGER Ltd, enablingcustomer requirements to be met quicklyand efficiently, also in extremely urgentcases.

The following photograph showsa recent delivery: namely, the largest insu-lation kit ever supplied by KLINGER SpA(external diameter 3600 mm). The kit isdestined for an important internationalOEM for maintance of a condenser. ■

  • Klinger Limited, United Kingdom

KLINGER Limited is pleased to announce the extension ofthe BP contract to 2008. The contract, the largest of its kindin Europe, covers the supply of gaskets to all sites withinthe UK.

Critical to the contract extensionwas an assessment of the quality of bothproducts and service. Accordingly, BP pro-curement and technical teams carried outan indepth market analysis that comparedKLINGER with competitors in all aspectsof sealing performance, technical support, service and price. KLINGER was found tobe the only company that could meet BP’sstringent quality, technical and procure-ment requirements.

A key factor in this success wasKLINGER’s investment in world-classmanufacturing equipment, thus ensuringthat the company will remain competitiveand continue to produce a product of thehighest quality that is unique within the UKmarket.

Prior to the signing of the con-tract, a two-day seminar was held at

KLINGER Limited with BP representativesfrom the UK, Holland, Spain, France andAmerica (see picture below). The seminarwas intended to familiarise KLINGER withBP sites worldwide and explain the detailsof the gasket agreement, which is beingused as the benchmark for all similar BPcontracts throughout the world. ■

Delivery of the firstautomated valve with amanual opening optionRich. Klinger Ind e Com Ltda., Brazil

As part of its ongoing develop-ment of the automated valve market,KLINGER Brazil has introduced a new lineof actuators with a manual opening option. The new product range has been designedin response to requests from clients tosolve a key security issue in their plants.

The first valve was delivered towell-known multinational AGFA. The com-pany will be using the new DN 30 valve ina saturated steam process that requires theextra security of a manual opening optionin the case of failure in the compressed airsystem.

KLINGER will be offering the newactuator in a wide range of valve sizes, andis already negotiating its export to otherLatin American markets. As with all otheractuators offered by KLINGER Brazil, thenew line can be used with on/off as well ascontrol valves. ■

    HNBR/Fibres&Fillers

    HNBR/ Fibres&Fillers

Operation Sandwich!Rich. Klinger Dichtungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Austria

Exactly 110 years after the invention of KLINGERit, theKLINGER Group is confirming its leading position in thearea of fibre-reinforced flat gaskets with its latest develop-ment - the KLINGER®top-sil-ML1. At the heart of this in-vention is the optimisation of the thermal stability of CNAmaterials through the use of special elastomers as a binder. In addition to the exclusive use of so-called specialelastomers, a heterogeneous multi-layer structure givesthe material a unique property profile.

Since the introduction ofKLINGERit, the brittleness of the binderused in sealing materials has been seenas a negative characteristic of the material. Before the banning of asbestos, undesir-able properties associated with the agingof elastomers were masked by a high as-bestos content that maintained the stabil-ity of the material despite aging of the rub-ber. In the area of CNA materials, on theother hand, experiments were centred onthe use of so-called special elastomers that, due to their chemical structure, age at a farslower rate and thus fulfil their function asa binder over longer periods. Several testsshowed, however, that the use of suchelastomers alone did not result in the bestpossible material properties. The solutionto this problem had already been found in1762 by a British admiral named Lord Johnde Montagne, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. To keep his fingers clean, he packed a por-tion meat between two slices of bread - thesandwich has been invented. Such a con-struction comprising several layers withina sealing sheet can, especially in the caseof flat gaskets, be realised without pro-blems by means of the calender process. For gaskets, this type of a heterogeneoussandwich construction using differentelastomers (see Fig. 1) leads to unexpectedand new properties.

In addition to the two coveringlayers, the cross section of the KLINGER

    ®

top-sil-ML1 is built up from three mainlayers. The upper and lower layers com-prise the usual filler and fibre materials, with HNBR as the binder. This is an

elastomer from the M-rubber group that isdistinguished by its high resistance to ag-ing at high temperatures. The middle layercomprises the same type and amount offiller and fibre materials as the two outerlayers, but uses NBR as the binder.

The key advantage of this mate-rial concept is the separate vulcanisationof the different elastomers and the result-ant heterogeneous construction. The lay-ers thus obtained can fulfil their specificfunctions:

Tests have shown that such acombination of properties cannot beachieved through homogeneous mixing ofthe two elastomers.

To assess the different agingresistances under high temperatures, hightemperatur saturated steam tests were car-ried out on various gaskets. As part of thesetests, the sample material was used to seala dummy flange under 120 bar saturated

Extended service life with less leakageunder high temperaturesHigher residual flexibilityDelayed agingLess creep

Due to the fact that this multi-layer gasket represents an exceptional in-

steam at a temperature of 320 °C. After acertain time, measurements on the test rigrevealed a drop in internal pressure. Thisleakage was caused by micro-cracks in thegasket structure due to aging processes inthe elastomer. If a comparison is now madebetween the service life of standard, com-mercially available CNA materials andKLINGER

    ®top-sil-ML1, the multi-layer

material exhibits a significant longer life

In the case of CNA materials, alsoother test procedures have confirmed theunprecedented profile of propertiesachieved with the multi-layer gasket. Theresults of 3-point deflection tests on artifi-cially aged material samples also showedthe greatly reduced brittleness ofKLINGER

    ®top-sil-ML1 compared with

standard, commercially available seal ma-terials. Moreover, after artificial aging insteam, much greater tightness was meas-ured on KLINGER

    ®top-sil-ML1 gaskets

than on materials using NBR as a binder. To summarise, the property pro-

file of the multi-layer gasket is as follows:

cycle (see Fig. 2). Measurable damage tothe gasket did not occur, even after an ex-tended test time by a factor of eight, com-pared with a seal using NBR as the binder.

novation in the area of sealing technology,in June of this year a patent was appliedfor in respect of the multi-layer materialconcept and the manufacturing process.

The multi-layer concept has alsobeen presented at various seminars, andwas received by material specialists withkeen interest.

    The market launch ofKLINGER

    ®top-sil-ML1 - the first product

based on the multi-layer raw material con-cept - KLINGER has succeeded in devel-oping an excellent innovation, and thusunderlines its leading role in the area ofsealing technology. ■

  • Attaining consolidated licensing certification

With industrial activities at the Gumpoldskirchen site nowstretching back a hundred years, KLINGER was confronted bythe accumulation of an almost impenetrable mass of partlyinvalid and still valid industrial planning permits.

Rich. Klinger Dichtungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG

Through our voluntary participa-tion in the EMAS-System, which also im-poses legal certainty, there has long beenan urgent need to join forces with the com-

petent authorities in order to eliminate thelegal uncertainties that had arisen duringsuch a long period of industrial activity.

That task finally began early thisyear with the involvement of an environ-mental engineering office and a law firm.Due to the close legal connections betweenthe two production outfits operating at thesite, namely Rich. KLINGER Dichtungs-technik GmbH & Co. KG and KLINGERFluid Control GmbH, it soon became evi-dent that both companies would have tobe included in the process.

Working with the relevant authori-ties and the consultants, and with excep-tional input from the staff, it has been pos-sible to develop a new basis for the two

facilities in the form of completely reorgan-ised and consolidated site documentationthat includes planning authorisations andnotifications, with the added advantage thatofficial consent is now covered in a singlynotification.

The preparatory work and thecompilation of authorisations and siterecords (already, they fill a whole file) isnow complete. The final planning permis-sion proceedings are scheduled for earlyNovember 2003 - which should enable usto operate a facility with the most up-to-date licensing before the end of that year.

As a result, we expect future op-erations such a s site relocations, decomm-issioning and internal execution of periodi-cal maintenance and site inspections to bemuch more efficient.

At long last, it will thus be possi-ble to have complete legal certainty in rela-tion to industrial and trade regulations. ■

New KLINGERSIL®product data sheetsRich. Klinger Dichtungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG

Rich. KLINGER Dichtungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG has recentlypublished several modified product data sheets for the mostimportant KLINGERSIL®materials: namely, KLINGERSIL®

    C-4400, KLINGERSIL® C-4430 and KLINGERSIL® C-4500.

For the first time, these datasheets also contain 3D-diagrams showingthe thickness decrease following theKLINGER Hot Compression Test, as wellas tightness measurements at elevated tem-peratures for different gasket loads and in-ternal pressures.

Installation instructions round offthe technical data, since correct installa-tion of the gaskets is the basic requirementfor a perfectly functioning flange connec-tion. Characteristic values according to DIN28091-2 are also included.

We are convinced that the addi-tion of this information to the new productdata sheets will be welcomed by engineersand users, and that by documenting this

KLINGER know-how, we are making a clearstatement about KLINGER’s leadership inthe sealing world. ■

Customer survey reveals generalsatisfaction Saidi, Spain a member of the Klinger®Group

SAIDI for the second successiveyear, has conducted a very positive cus-tomer-satisfaction survey, with customersstressing that the attention they have re-ceived from our staff being the best possi-ble weapon they have when it comes tomeeting and beating our competition.

Although, as expected, they aresatisfied with our product quality, a fewasked for improvements as far as deliveryand prices were concerned. We continueto take due notice of this advice.

A comparison of the 2003 and2002 survey results shows that in 2002,35 % of those questioned, expressed posi-tive satisfaction, stressing the excellent at-tention to detail by SAIDI particularly onthe telephone. In 2003, 34 % again ex-pressed satisfaction, stressing the compa-ny’s kind and synergetic approach.

Just to prove that KLINGERis not always where wewould like to be SAIDI con-ducted a customer survey. We were not totally sur-prised but nonetheless thisrevelead (a lot of) satisfac-tion.

In 2002, 58 % of those ques-tioned stressed that SAIDI came up to allof their expectations, In 2003, 63 % weretotally satisfied with all of their expectations

being met in every regard. We are delightedwith these results but realise that we stillmust get better and we continue to welcomefeedback from our valued customers. ■
