Apps from workshop/presentations in Bulgaria

Introduction

I have listed a few of the apps I used during my presentations in Bulgaria. Most of them are free, some are available for a small price (up to 2 Euros), and some of them provide partial functionality with in-app purchases required to have full functionality.

I’ve tried, where possible, to provide an Android and Apple alternative for each app. However, in general, Apple have (and have always had) many more apps to choose from than Android. If you are thinking about buying a tablet (as a teacher, at least), it is worth remembering this.

Camera apps

What you can do with this/these apps?Get your students to draw or create something visual, take a photo and share it with the class. A great task could be describing a picture, getting students to draw, then take photos of the drawings and share. Analyse the pictures, and then finish by showing the picture you described.Who are the apps for?Teachers and StudentsRecommended appsAny camera on a smartphone or tablet.NotesRemember, even if you only have a smartphone, you can take photos and email them to your main computer. With tablets, you can plug them directly into a projector, if you have the right adaptor.

Interactive whiteboard software apps

What you can do with this/these apps? With these types of apps you can do most of the things you can do with an interactive whiteboard:

Import pictures and then present them Add text Hide and reveal pictures Annotate pictures Create flipcharts with multiple pages of content

These apps are best used by teachers in presenting lessons. Remember: because you can save the files, you can plan and save lessons and re-use them as often as you want.

Who are the apps for?TeachersRecommended appsApple (IOS) appInkflow

Please note there are many types of apps – either graphics apps or whiteboard apps – that work in similar ways, and more are being developed all the time. The important things to check for are:

Can you import pictures? Can you add text? Can you draw and write on the pages and pictures? Can you create multiple pages? Can you save your work?

If you can answer yes to all of these questions, then you have found a useful app.

Collage graphic apps

What you can do with this/these apps? You can import and arrange pictures and text (and stickers) to create digital posters.Recommended appsApple (IOS) app, Android app – works on tablets and smartphonesPic CollageNotesThis app is great for pair work – interview your partner and create a digital poster with images showing his hobbies, where he is from and some personal information, etc.

It is also good for homework – take photos of what you did at the weekend and present to the class (a speaking task, as opposed to a written task). It’s good for research, too – for example: research and produce a collage on British food/cities/football teams, etc.

Tracing apps

What you can do with this/these apps? You can trace around a picture to create an outline of a scene or image, and then invite the students to fill in the details and guess what the picture is. Later show the picture in class.Recommended appsApple (IOS) appGraphite Lite and Morpholio

Android appTraces ProNotesThis app is great for pair introducing different topics not presented in the coursebook. It’s also good for revisiting work in a different way.

These are great for pre-reading tasks, helping students concentrate on key words, and also picking out information you want them to look for in the text.
