5 1 ADVICE FROM THE LOCALS.

We live here. We play here. We shop here. We eat here. Heck, some of us grew up here. Nobody knows and loves the Kelso-Longview area more than we do. And no one has their pulse on the heartbeat of the cities than the Chamber. So use us to your advantage. We want you to enjoy the area as much as we do.

2 BIG FOOT. BIG ATTRACTION. Whether you're a believer or a

skeptic you can't say no to pos-ing for a photo with the 8-foot Sasquatch that calls the Visitor Center home. The Pacific North-west is known for sightings of the hairy beast and what better way to prove you visited our neck of the woods than by snapping a selfie with Sasquatch.

3 SERVICE WITH A SMILE. Service is who we are and

what we do. If we don't have the answers, chances are we know someone who does and we can

find them for you. Ask the Vances from Missouri who stopped by a couple years ago and wanted to go fishing spur of the moment. A few phone calls and we hooked them up, pun intended, with Brandon's Guide Service, who just happened to have an opening the next day. They limited that day and booked another trip.

4 SOUVENIRS FOR LASTING MEMORIES. The Chamber's

Visitor Center has a variety of gifts to show the folks back home. Noth-ing says Kelso or Longview like a Squirrel Fest hat, a Shay Locomo-tive T-shirt, a container of Mount St. Helen's ash or a Big Foot book or bumper sticker.

5 COUPONS AND DISCOUNTS. As business insiders we not

only can tell you where to eat or suggest events to do and see, we can save you money. We partner with many local businesses who offer discounts and coupons that we can provide.

Chamber Ambassadors – The Red CoatsChamber Ambassadors, or as we refer to them "The Red Coats," are an integral part of the Chamber of Commerce. Ambassadors are the mainstay of Chamber volunteers. They juggle busy professional careers while making time to assist the

Chamber at a variety of events year long. Easily identified by their red blazers, you will find them meeting and greeting at our numerous events, welcoming new members at ribbon cuttings, assisting with community programs and having a great time.

To become an Ambassador, you must be an active Chamber member, and be able to make what often amounts to a significant time commitment.

The Chamber also offers these committees: Economic Development, Government Affairs, Lower Columbia Professionals, Chamber Education Foundation.

Education Foundation CommitteeThe Chamber's Education Foundation Committee develops, implements and supports programs

that promote relationships between business and education. The Committee coordinates the Business and Education Awards each May, recognizing employer organizations and individuals

that provide continuing education, including technology, for their employees. The event also rec-ognizes excellence in education, specifically among teachers, administrators and support staff.

Coordinating the Chamber's scholarship program by setting criteria, selecting recipients and determining ways to help fund the program is also part of the Committee's role, as is assisting in

maintaining and strengthening the Chamber's relationship with area education boards.

Nutting More FunIn 2011, The Sandbaggers wanted to cre-ate a fun event nutty enough for every-one regardless of age. That is exactly what Squirrel Fest embodies as the annual festival, this year scheduled for Aug. 13, has become Longview's marquee, good-time, family event. The city has embraced its squirrel-friendly reputation. There are five squirrel bridges around the city, one with its own live squirrel cam.

www.lvsquirrelfest.com

Fourth of July Longview’s Go Fourth Festival touts itself as the largest, family-oriented festival in greater Cowlitz County, drawing more than 30,000 people to the shores of Lake Sacajawea for the Fourth of July celebration. Started in the 1960s, the celebration continues to grow, but always includes concerts, sporting events, the Cardboard Boat Regatta, parade and spectacular fireworks display.

Honoring Our RootsEach year, the City of Kelso honors its Scot-tish roots with clans, kilts and bagpipes at the Highlander Festival. Tam O'Shanter Park serves as the backdrop for the festivi-ties, which include Highland Dance Compe-

tition, Games and Piping Competition and a Parade of Clans. The weekend, this year Sept. 10-11, also includes Scottish craft and food vendors, music, the Kilted Klassic Golf Tournament and the Kirkin O' The Tartan.

All's Fair This year's Cowlitz County Fair is July 27-30. There will be grandstand entertainment, a professional rodeo, carnival, youth market sale, food, vendors, FFA and 4H exhibits and much more. Admission is free all day, every day. Bareback riding, team roping, steer wres-tling, barrel racing, and bull riding –whew! That's a whole lot of excitement in one arena, but that's what you'll find at the Thunder Mountain Pro Rodeo July 28-30.

BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO LIVE

In 2012, Longview was rated by Forbes as one of America’s 10 prettiest towns

Longview Called the Gateway to the Pacific. A city of 36,000 it traces its roots to founder R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Lumber Company, who built a mill along the Columbia River and in the early 1920s Longview to accommodate its workers. Designed as a hub for business and travel routes, the town's Civic Center features R.A. Long Park, Longview Public Library, the Monticello Hotel, the post office and city hall. Today, Longview is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base and a variety of recreational, educational and cultural offerings. It is ideally situ-ated: On Interstate 5 between Seattle and Portland; between the Colum-bia and Cowlitz rivers; 90-minutes from the Pacific Ocean or the Cascade Mountains. And, even with its diminished size, Mount St. Helens looms large and can be seen from the city on a clear day.

Page 11: Klcd2016

Squirrel CrossingBuilt in 1963 by the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a local landmark and listed on the city's historic register. Peters constructed the structure, which stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Center Circle, to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy thoroughfare. The origi-nal 60-foot bridge was built from alumi-num and fire hose. In 1983, the bridge was spruced up and rededicated. It is now one of five in the city and the focal point for the Squirrel Fest celebration.

Good EatsThere's something for every taste in Downtown Longview. Thinking pizza, you can have wood-fired. Fishing for something seaworthy, try one of the many restaurants serving up the catch of the day. Gourmet burgers, you bet. Satisfy a sweet tooth with

ice cream or cupcakes.

Shop, Shop, ShopThe perfect prescription for retail therapy awaits shoppers in Downtown Longview. In the Vintage District more than a dozen antique, collectible and second-hand stores await treasure hunters, intertwined with art galleries, speciality shops, home furnish-ings – there's even a store filled with board games and handmade soaps.

Farmers' MarketEach Tuesday and Saturday, the Cowlitz County Conference Center comes alive with the scent of fresh flowers, the color of just-picked berries and vegetables, and the sight of crafts from artisans. The Farm-ers Market is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October.

Waltz Through TimeStroll through Longview's history by heading downtown to R.A. Long Park and Civic Circle. Named for the city founder, R.A. Long Park is a National Register Historic District. The park was designed to be the center of the city. Its roads extend out from the circle with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the United States Post Office. Each build-ing showcasing its original architecture and character from the 1920s. Surprise! Surprise! Inside Civic Circle is a piece of Plymouth Rock, a sundial and a number of memorials. Don't forget to check out the Chief Lelooska totem pole. A few blocks in any direction and there's more to see like the Monticello Convention Site on Tennant Way where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon at the Columbia River forming the Washington Territory, later Washington State. Wander off between Kessler Boulevard and the Monticello Hotel toward the Old West Side to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by world-renown architects for the movers and shakers during the birth of Longview. Also on Kessler at Washington Way sits the grand Community Church, on the city's historic register. Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles that keep watch from their perches, and the beautiful stained glass.

Full Steam AheadIn 1997, John Chilson and Jeff Wilson be-gan restoring the Shay Locomotive out-side the Longview Public Library. It took the two volunteers and a host of others from ILWU Local No. 21 more than 2,000 hours to steam the 40-ton engine back to life. The Shay Locomotive hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when logging trucks became the preferred method of move-ment. The Long-Bell Lumber Co., which founded Longview in the 1920s, donated the locomotive to the city in 1956. Over time it became rusted and vandalized, but thanks to the volunteer effort and funding from businesses, grants and personal donations it has been restored.

Batter Up!Peanuts, Cracker Jack, the crack of a bat and the roar of a crowd are part of the at-mosphere on a summer night watching the Cowlitz Black Bears take to the diamond at Story Field on the Lower Columbia Col-lege campus. This West Coast League team features some of the country's top colle-giate players and serves as the foundation for a future Major League career. The Bears open in June and keep swinging through August. General admission begins at $8. This year, Story Field hosts the West Central League's All-Star Game July 19.

Known as the City of Friendly People, Kelso is a thriving and growing community of about 12,000 in the city, and an-other 85,000 in Cowlitz County. Another 20,000 residents reside in Wahkiakum and south Lewis counties in Wash-ington and Columbia County in Oregon, all who are part of the Kelso community. Surveyor Peter Crawford named the city after his homeland in Kelso, Scotland. In honor, Kelso also has an official tartan and hosts the Highlander Festival each year at, appropriately Tam O'Shanter Park. Kelso also serves as base camp for the Kelso Longview Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce. Kelso is 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon, 125 miles south of Seattle and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Its location and proximity to the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia rivers also draw people to it for business, recreation and tourism.

Travel HubKelso is the area's transportation hub.

Conveniently located only a half mile from Interstate 5, sits the Southwest Washing-ton Regional Airport. The airport started as a grass landing strip on a dairy farm. The approximately 109 acres of land is now owned by the City of Kelso. Down-town Kelso is also home to an Amtrak station. The Kelso Train Depot, originally built in 1911 as part of Burlington North-ern, has undergone extensive renovations to become the region's first multimodal transportation facility. Fancy words mean-ing it serves as a center for several modes of transportation. Part of the "multi" modal transportation service includes bus. Kelso is served by Greyhound Bus Lines, which provides bus service all around the nation, and RiverCities Transit, which provides lo-cal service for Longview and Kelso.

Parade Through the PastDescribed as a fact-filled repository of

early life in southwest Washington, the Cowlitz County Historical Museum main-tains an extensive collection of photos, artifacts, and books documenting the history of our county. Founded in 1949, it is the place to discover how the land and rivers of Cowlitz County have shaped the lives of people for hundreds of years.

Retail TherapyAnchored by JC Penney, Macy's, Sports-

man's Warehouse, Regal Cinemas and Planet Fitness, Kelso is home to Three Rivers Mall. If you are looking for some-thing with a decidedly more local flair, head downtown where the Kelso Down-town Revitalization Association has been hard at work welcoming new business.

Parks

The Crown JewelLongview's Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors alike. Developed in 1924, the park today serves as the centerpiece for the city. Those with an active lifestyle flock to it to walk, jog and bike on the 3.5 miles of trails which meander across landscaped bridges, through gardens of trees and flowers, and past two spectacular fountains. The park offers the Frank Willis Arboretum, with more than 100 species, the beautiful Japanese Garden and the educational Solar System Walk. There's kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking. Children, or those young at heart, can enjoy two playgrounds. There are concerts and movies at the lake on summer evenings.

Recreation HavenThe year-round recreational opportuni-ties at Tam O'Shanter Park are endless with 38 acres of playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking paths and sports fields (baseball, softball and soccer). Located near Kelso High School, Tam O'Shanter has become a regional and national destination for tournament team sports, bringing thou-sands to compete at the state-of-the-art complex each year at Rister Stadium for baseball, Heerensperger Field for softball, as well as the eight other fields, basketball court, and horseshoe pits. The park's trail system edges the river and is dotted with 30 picnic areas. Tam O'Shanter also wel-comes clans and caber tossers as the host site for Kelso's annual Highlander Festival.

www.kelso.gov

Beach Front EscapeFive miles west of Longview is a mile of sandy beach along the Columbia River and Willow Grove Park. This is a popular loca-tion to enjoy a number of outdoor activities. The 60-acre, day-use park features a mile long barrier-free, asphalt walking trail, pic-nic areas with barbecue pits, boat launch, a playground and plenty of free parking. With an emphasis on safety, the park maintains a "life jacket loaner" program. Willow Grove Park is open year round. It's also reported to be a good spot to fly a kite.

www.co.cowlitz.wa.us

Water WonderThe Catlin Rotary Spray Park offers an

alternative to cooling off in the area's rivers or lakes. It is located on the corner of Cowlitz Way and Main Street in Kelso and includes a water spray play area, benches, picnic tables and restrooms. The park is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Pool more your speed, there's the Longview YMCA of Southwest Washington.

Relax on the RiverLocated one mile off Interstate 5, Gerhart Gardens Park is easy on the mind. The river plays a key role in the park's popu-larity. Soak in the beautiful scenery by boat, there's a convenient launch, walk along the shore, or set up a picnic under a shady tree. Cast a line, either by land or water, both are quite acceptable. Need more action? The 14 acres also includes basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and a playground. And don't forget Rover, let the pooch out of the car to stretch his legs at the, fenced, off-leash dog park.

Tennis EveryoneThe City of Longview has open tennis courts at Rotary, John Null and Vandercook parks. The courts at John Null Park are even lit for night owls. Or try the Mint Valley Racquet and Fitness Com-plex with its four indoor tennis courts, two pickleball courts, four racquetball/wallyball courts and a pro shop.

Mountain JoyBreathtaking viewpoints and miles of trails have been created to explore Mount St. Helens by car and foot. During the summer Forest Service interpreters lead a wide range of activities like short walks and amphitheater presentations. Adventurers can climb – 4,500 feet of elevation in five miles – or explore from the air with a helicopter tour. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails are available. In many cases only enthusiasm is necessary, in others a permit is required.

A Heart for ArtThe historic Columbia Theatre opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped what would have been a tragic ending in 1980 when excavation and demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with the cleanup follow-ing the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the interim, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the vibrant 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and children's theatre. The theater earned a Historical Preservation Officers Award from Washington State for outstanding achievement in historic preser-vation. Its counterpart is the Kelso Theater Pub/Backstage Cafe. The historic theater in downtown Kelso hosts a variety of movies, music, art and public events.

Some of the best golf in the state is found in Longview and Kelso. Built on a base of silt and sand from the 1980 Mount

St. Helens eruption, Three Rivers Golf Course provides year-round play, while Mint Valley, named for the 120 acres of mint fields that once stood there, is a refreshing respite, and

the Longview Country Club is long on history and greens.

ADVENTUREYear-round there's always hiking, biking and fishing for outdoor adventure, but have you tried geocaching? It’s a treasure hunt using GPS-enabled devices. Speak-ing of hidden treasure, why not spend the day prospecting. Take a chance at striking it rich by panning for gold in a local river and creek. Many in the area have varying amounts of gold, platinum, and other min-erals. Bob's Sporting Goods or Southwest Washington Mineralogical Society can provide information to get started. Whiz through the forest on a zip line with Tree-house Island Zip Line Adventures or Tree to Tree Adventure Park. Zip lines are a pul-ley suspended on a cable that speed you from the top of a hill to the bottom. Rent a kayak at Paddle Flats Kayaking. They say "the wildlife is just crazy" at Silver Lake and the Coal Creek Slough. Climb Mount St. Helens. Late spring through early fall is the most popular season.

Fishing FrenzyThe Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama riv-ers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia River offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and Coho at Mer-win Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir. Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the City of Longview, has trout. Check the Fishing in Washington regula-tions pamphlet for limits and size require-ments. Don't forget a fishing license.

www.wdfw.wa.gov

Go DeepThe kids will go ape over these lava tubes. Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lava tube in the continental United States, 12,810 feet. Please wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket and carry a flashlight. Opt for either the easier route or head uphill for the longer adventure, a mile-plus climb over large boulders. Information, lantern rentals and guided tours are available at the Ape headquarters from early July through Labor Day.

www.visitmtsthelens.com

Mountain BikingLongview's Cloney Park includes a BMX

trail. If you're looking to crank it up a notch, then head to the hills, south side of Mount St. Helens to be specific, for some of the Northwest's premier mountain biking treks. Our sources point to Siouxon Creek, Lewis River, South Coldwater and Falls Creek. The Ape Canyon ride, which begins on the south side of Mount St. Helens, we understand is one of the Northwest's premier mountain biking outings. The Three Rivers Cycling Club has assembled a list of area rides of varying degrees of challenge.

Off the Beaten PathFor those who like their two-wheels to have some horsepower don't worry, the area offers a number of options. Racing is available at the Castle Rock Fairgrounds track, Option MX and Riverdale Raceway in Toutle, and Woodland M/X Park.

Sleep Under the StarsThere are dozens of places in the area to pitch a tent or pull in an RV in Cowlitz, Pacific, Wahkiakum, Lewis, Clark and Skamania counties. But three with close proximity to Longview and Kelso come to mind. County Line Park on Ocean Beach Highway, Brook-hollow RV Park, Silver Cove RV Resort and Cedars RV Park. Seaquest State Park is a 475-acre, year-round camping park near

Mount St. Helens. The beautifully forested park, with large secondary old growth trees, is situated off Spirit Lake Highway across from Silver Lake and the Mount St. Helens visitor center. In addition to the Chamber of Commerce, a good source of information about area campgrounds can be found on the Good Sam RV Travel Guide and Camp-ground Directory.

www.goodsamcamping.com

Terrific TeesThe 18-hole Three Rivers Golf Course, established in 1983 next to the Cowlitz River, is owned and operated by the Kelso-Longview Elks BPOE 1482. The course is known to provide a challenge for beginners and professionals. The member-owned Longview Country Club offers plenty of playability for golfers of all skill levels. Ranging from 5,200 to 6,215 yards this 'old school' course with its lush, tree-lined fairways, its small, fast sloping greens, and its demanding par 3s serves up plenty of challenges. One of the finest public golf courses in the state can be found at Mint Valley Golf Course. The well-bunkered greens, water hazards, and tall trees will test every skill level. This par-71 championship course plays 6,432 yards from the back tees. The greens are fast and in excellent condition.
