This is very exciting, I have never applied for a scholarship before, and only found out about your scholarship when investigating educational options to study Interior Design a couple of weeks ago. Wow, what a journey... I have learnt a lot and do hope that my attached entry for the competition appeals and interests you and the judges enough, to seriously consider my entry for the scholarship. As a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Shiprokers. I have traveled and lived in many different countries giving me an excellent insight into international cultural, design and fashion trends. I am fortunate in being able to offer Feng Shui services to clients, as I trained as a practitioner in Singapore whilst posted there. I do know that, without a shadow of doubt I would love to become fully trained and call myself an Interior Designer and in the future run my own successful business. The two competition statements are attached with a PDF containing my montage. Yours sincerely, Vanda-Lynn Hughes

Dear Rachel,

Good afternoon to you, as requested I am enclosing a covering letter for the prospective client to go with my Competition entry.

Yours sincerely,

Vanda-Lynn Hughes

Creativity Takes Courage - Henry Mattisse

Did Henry Mattisse have it ? I believe he did have courage to be creative.

He painted faces in colours!Being unusual at a time when it wasn’t normal to be dramatically different. He mixed colours and products together in different ways.Sometimes glueing together newly discovered items to reflect what he saw in them, in other words being creative!

He then went on to create what I believe was in his minds eye … what others may not have seen as achievable with a simple resource he created an item of beauty … takes true and real creative courage.

________ Statement on strengths / weaknesses / opportunities of space provided follows.

The montage of scheme and style ideas is below. Please click the plan below to view the montage pages sent as a PDF .

Here is my email letter to the prospective clients.

Dear Jack and Jill

First I would like to thank you very much for the privilege of presenting a scheme and design for your new studio apartment.

Let us look at your apartment and the fantastic opportunities it offers. First the strengths then some of the weakness or potential problems that this studio apartment has presented, should be considered when preparing a new design scheme.

I have found your request very interesting and challenging. I would like to assure you that the space you have acquired already has the benefit of the WOW factor, with some ingenuity and creativity together, we shall achieve a stunning design scheme with style. One you will both enjoy for its contemporary modern feel and find a relaxing sanctuary to come home to, reflecting your individuality and impressing you and your friends.

Understated elegance and style I believe will be key to the success.

Looking at the plan as presented, there are questions that immediately come to mind having not visited the site.

The first question I have, is any of the space subject to preservation listing and therefore building and conservation restrictions?

Could you please advise whether the building is part of a purpose built block of flats with both north and south facing apartments having a passage separating them hence the lack of windows on the north side where the passageway is?

If this is not the case would you now or in the future consider having structural work done to bring more light into the area at the rear north wall? This will address one of the weaknesses and pos-sibly open up the opportunity of adding another entrance door, effectively having back door and front doors.

The balcony is very large and will I believe make a beautiful sunny space for relaxation and enter-taining. The apartment could be enhanced by opening up access to this area if planning approval could be obtained, glassed in partially or fully I would love to hear your thoughts and whether to pursue these design ideas further.

If this isn’t feasible at the moment then I believe it needs to be looked at closely in the future. At this time I shall include furnishings to make the balcony very user friendly, with suggestions that shall use every permitted structural enhancements to have full benefit of the balcony in all weather.

The simplest option would be to have a very good quality automatic retractable canopy fitted pos-sibly with side and front panels. (This is subject to the same being permitted by the joint owners of the block).

I have included in the montage a few suggestions for the balcony including furniture to enjoy the sunny south facing aspect when the weather will allow.

At this time I have endeavored to make the best suggestions for the space to develop the prop-erty to its fullest potential, the furniture and ideas have been put together to suit your lifestyles, which I have enjoyed doing for you. I look forward to our first meeting.

With the limited details about your personnel likes and dislikes, knowing you both travel exten-sively and have busy lives, I have endeavored to design a home that meets all your needs along with good storage.

I have assumed a number of items. The apartment has central heating, which I do hope is either ducted or underfloor heating. Coving or skirting heating can work just as well with the design. Please advise which the apartment has.

Toilet and bathrooms can be installed and piping routed in the coving or underfoot as the apart-ment has great height.

The scheme I have completed has 1 bedroom should you wish to have a small guest bedroom this can be achieved easily, the hall and lounge space will be reduced.

I have suggested a blue - gray pallet, this can easily be altered to you preference using another base colour, like a light spring yellow-green pallet. Highly fashionable for this summer 2014.

To minimize the building of new stud walls, I suggest new floor to ceiling cupboards are built to form wall partitions and where possible sliding screens are used instead of doors they could slide within a stud wall so that doors do not intrude on the space available.

Commissioning a very good carpenter / joiner to build the bespoke bookcase wall on the north side (window lights could be added above).

You will see I have suggested wooden shutters for the windows which will give your apartment added security and give you peace of mind. Dressing the windows with a very light silk curtain will then allow you to reduce harsh bright sun light when desired.

I look forward to receiving your comments and discussing your design requirements in more de-tail should you agree and like the contemporary design and scheme suggested.

Kind regards

Vanda - Lynn Hughes
