•   When Forbes Magazine published a list of the country’s best performing public school districts for 2010, one district in communities with a median home price of under $100,000 emerged at the top.    The list was compiled by using data taken from the website of a national not-for-profit organization known as GreatSchools Inc.    If you guessed that the nation’s best district was located in wealthy Texas, you’d be within two points in the final rankings. Richmond, Texas, with a population of 13,400, was ranked just behind Harrison, Ark., population 13,100, as America’s top school district.    Yep, you read it right. Harrison was selected (by folks not easily impressed) based on a list of criteria. After describing all the benefits of daily life and the values in Harrison, the GreatSchools’ evaluators wrote: “The pupils also kick academic butt: Three schools are rated 10, and four are 9’s. With its well-developed gifted and talented program and an intimate 12.5-to-1 student-teacher ratio, Harrison offers serious book learning in a mountain idyll.”    Sen. Blanche Lincoln has read this honor for Arkansas and the Ozark Mountains community into the Congressional Record. This brought to mind a lengthy article written more than 40 years ago by Associated Press special correspondent Jules Loh, who came to Harrison and later described it as the nation’s all-American community.    It just goes to show you that really nice things in life can be honored even when they are smaller in size, even when it comes to school districts.

•  Kindnesses    I was among the 80 or so golfers participating in the annual Kiwanis Club golf tournament in Harrison the other day. When we arrived at the 13th tee, it was sweaty hot, nearly 90 degrees with hardly a breeze. Whew.    Within a minute, here came Christy Lair bouncing from her nearby back door carrying a plate of packages wrapped in white paper. Her dad, Herb, was running the charity tournament, which hosted a record 19 teams this year.    With a bright smile, Christy handed each of my teammates (Max Wright, Jim Richiert and Courtney Garland) and me an ice cream bar. I wolfed mine down in six sticky bites. There’s something especially refreshing about an icy, crunchy, chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream bar on a hot day.    Christy, who remains on the medical list for a kidney transplant, has been performing that particular kindness for a few years now. It’s such thoughtful acts at just the right moment that touch all of us the deepest.

Kiwanis Golf Event  is scheduled for May 16th - thanks for your past support - I think you had  four teams last year - best I recall, even with all those teams, you failed to  beat Mike Masterson's team.

  Ken,    We're OK with you passing as long as you send    lots of money. Mike has a tough life as a writer,    and we like to give him, his moment of glory.    As you can see below he has a lot of detractors    and I'm sure that having his one shining moment   (borrowed from CBS) is something we all should    appreciate. Maybe Klossner (below) is a golfer,    and we could invite him as your replacement?   I'm sure he meant a crack shot, not crackpot?     Herb
