Today’s Program… Boy Scouts in Action Day at Kiwanis

Evan LeRoy, himself an Eagle Scout, introduced today’s great program and speaker, Rachal Carson, from Boy Scouts of American (BSA) Southern Shores Field Service Council. Rachal in turn introduced 10 other members of the scout-ing community to share their scouting stories. Evan shared his experiences in Scouting and information about the current size and impact of Scouting in this area. There are 2,341 Scouts involved in the local Huron Trails District. Last year 988 cub scouts and 497 boy scouts advanced one rank. 511 cub scouts and 639 boy scouts attended summer camp, 64 scouts earned their Eagle rank. Local scouts completed over 16,000 hours of community service.

The first young scout presenter today was Adam Luck-hardt, who shared and answered questions about his Eagle Scout project. Paul Reed, Tim Cotts, and Josh Cotts, presented our Club with our Charter-ing Document from Pack 131 and thanks to Kiwanis for providing space for their recent Pinewood Derby Races successfully held at KCW. John Squires provided information about the opportunity and need for more volunteers and an upcoming training near Bruin Lake. Cub Scouts, Wyatt and Gunner Carson shared what experiences they liked best about being in scouts. Josh Caldwell took all of us on a tour of the campsite demo set up, tent, fire pit, and equipment that the scouts brought to show today. He likes winter camping best (no bugs).

Today’s program reminded us all of the great experience that scouting programs provide our youth. For more information about scouting and volunteering contact Rachal Carson at [email protected]. Note: In 2015 this local scout organization honored Cliff and Ingrid Sheldon as Distinguished Citizens. More photos from today on Page 5.

President Betsy Ford proposed to fine herself because she forgot to bring her Kiwanis badge today. Passed. Dan Dever asked to address Past President Kathy Barton-Perlberg to fine all current and past Kiwanis officers. Passed.

Happy Dollars: Betsy Ford was happy to thank Alan Burg, Kathie Wilder, and John Dahl for their support during her absence. William Hampton reminded everyone that a great person, Martin Luther King Jr. age 39, was assassinated on this date in 1968 and that we continue to honor and remember him. Chris Winkler announced that for the upcoming 3-year anniversary of his son-in-law and daughter’s Cardamom Restaurant in September, they plan to make a donation to UNICEF for relief of earthquake victims in Nepal. Fred Sanchez happy to share the great trip on Route 66 with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Sally Lamkin said it was great to have her grandson here shopping on Saturday at KCD and KCW. Dale Leslie shared a story about a young scout being brave facing sur-gery. Al Gallop happy to complete over 800 miles of bike riding while on his recent vaca-tion and for being able to bike ride for 9 decades. Joe Medrano congratulated UM wom-en’s gymnastics team for their recent great performance. And be sure to watch Channel 19 CTN at 11am and again at 5pm every M-W-F and on Saturday at 11am and Sunday at 5pm throughout this month to see two Kiwanians discussing KCW. Jeanette Okuley is so very happy and thankful that her father was able to enjoy his a very big 90th birthday in Ohio and to remember to love your family every day. Her brother, John, and family are recovering from a horrible car accident on the Ohio turnpike on Easter Sunday. Larry French has your lucky raffle ticket waiting for you to purchase ($10 each) for a trip for two to Maui. Jocelyn Wilder happy and proud that the Boy Scouts, leaders, and volunteers were here at Kiwanis today to share their experiences.

Stuff You Should Know… Hospitality News: Max Ziegler reported the Bob Snider’s son had a stroke a month ago. He is at Beaumont Hospital. No current update is available. Lee Bachman is at home with home Hospice care. He welcomes calls and brief visits. Don McEwen is doing fine. He surprised us with a visit to KCD last Saturday in his wheelchair planning to visit members and shoppers, but be-cause only the donation area was open he visit was shorter than planned. John Goff is still at home but is planning to return to Kiwanis meetings starting next Monday. Julanne Williams’ husband, Jeff, is doing much better and has started physical therapy. Beth Ken-ny, volunteer, had a pace maker put in this morning, doing fine, celebrated her birthday with family on Saturday at the hospital.
