Mahmooooo’s Message
"Kiwanis One Day", a day dedicat-ed for Kiwanis clubs all over the world to perform a meaningful service project in their respective communities. This years official date for this effort was April 5, but we could not schedule our project till this past Saturday, only be-cause we were busy supporting our SLP, attend their respec-tive DCON's for the two weekends prior. Our club should be extreme-ly proud, as we had a record 193
volunteers, made up of our Divi-sional Key Clubs, KIWIN'S clubs, Aktion club, and fellow Kiwanians gather to improve Schabarum Park equestrian trail. The effort and level of participation was impres-sive to say the least. If you were not able to join us, you missed out on the great feeling of satisfaction, all of us in attendance got, know-ing we did something to improve the quality of our regional park right here in our awesome com-munity of Hacienda Heights.. Our youth (SLP) have a lesson for us all here, as out of 193 in attendance, 189 were these passionate, dedi-cated young adults, who worked hard, painting, weeding, and pick-ing up litter along the trails. Its
never too late, join us when the next service opportunity comes our way. If that means we have to do a bit of soul searching to re-mind ourselves that we are a ser-vice organization first and fore-most, then we must.
Remember to serve, and always serve with a smile.
" Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improv-
ing the world one child and one community at a time"

El Presidente called our meeting to order at 6:11 PM. Tina Banes proudly led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Officer Robert Barba selected “God Bless America” as the patriotic song for the evening, and led us in its singing. Su-san Jacklin delivered a very thoughtful and inspiring invo-cation. Club members in attendance were Dave W, Charlie Huff, Izzey Osman, Kathy Young, Grace Chan, Jim Stewart, Tina Banes, Susan Jacklin, Anna Wu, and Robert Barba. Kathy Young intro-duced our guests Blanca & Phil Hinijos from LPI club, and our future KIWIN’S member and Kiwanian Kyra. Dave Wallach led us in the singing of our “Welcome Song”. We were later joined by another guest, Patrick Young, Imme-diate Past President of Los Altos KIWIN’S club. El Presi-dente introduced him. Patrick informed us about a position
he is interested in and apply-ing for. He would like to chair Membership Services, on the KIWIN’S Appointed District Board. He asked if it would be ok for him to video tape our Kiwanis One Day Project. He was given thumbs up to do so. Anna gave us an update on the future of the Kiwa-niscope. She is updating the format; she had a few sample copies to show. She wants to apply for a Newsletter Award through Kiwanis Internation-al. The members in attend-ance agreed that the changes look nice. The original header currently being used doesn’t qualify and she was told to choose the one that will give the most points. She has also asked that if any members want their articles in the Ki-waniscope, to please send them to her. During the meeting, Susan provided some light moments for us as she spilled her Coke all over
herself, the table, and floor and into her plate of food. She was so embarrassed. Dave W came to her rescue with napkins and started to clean up the mess and Blanca retrieved one of her staff to clean up. Robert Barba gave Susan a bib to wear for the rest of the evening (clean toilet seat cover). Thanks for a little amusement and laugh-ter Susan. But you know, we love you Susan. Dave Wal-lach sold the 50/50 tickets. Our guest Patrick Young pulled the winning ticket and Lon Salgren was the winner taking home a whopping $90 Kiwanis dollar ($9). Lon Salgren was scheduled to, but could not join us as he was duty bound as our Region 13 Trustee visiting Division 15, so Dave Wallach pulled double/triple duty as he checked for pins and badges, and collect-ed food cans for Del Haven, or at least we thought so.
Kathy Young circulated the donation cans. We collected $6.00 for each of the three cans, Relay for Life, Children’s Hospital, and ELIMINATE. A total of $23.00 was contribut-ed by generous members for Happy/Sad dollars. El Presi-dente was our “Mr. K”; every-one was friendly, as El Presi-dente walked over to each member and shook their hand. El Presidente rang the bell at 7:20 PM, at which time the meeting was adjourned as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. Thanks everyone! Submitted by: Kathy Young & Mahmood Bashir

Happy & Sad Dollars 4/16/2013 Dave W – Sad that his business is dwindling but happy that he has a new adventure with the help of Jasper Thoue. He will be calling all of us for our help. Blanca – Sad because the street work is affecting her business. Susan – Happy that she is going on vacation to Australia. Robert – Happy to be here at the meeting because he has missed so many due to work and just because. Tina – Happy because school is almost done for the year, 24 days left. Jim – Happy because he was able to sign up for a swim meet in Goleta. He won a 4th Place Ribbon, 2nd and 3rd Place Metals. Grace – Happy to be here at the meeting. Mahmood – Happy to see what the SLP’s have accom-plished this past year. It was pleasing to see them rec-ognized at their DCON’s these past 2 weekends. Their clubs do a lot and the Kiwaniscope proves it with all the pictures and articles. Happy- Our daughter Sara has always wanted to be on the Cheerleading squad but she did not want to do the pyramids. She has
made the Song Squad and now we call her our Pom Pom Girl. Izzy – Happy just because. Kathy – Happy that her car seems to be finally fixed. After the new transmission and the starter problem in San Ramon and having to make a trip up to Dublin to retrieve it, all seems to be ok with it now. Anna – Happy that last week’s Kiwaniscope was twen-ty-something pages. Hope everyone gets a chance to take a look Submitted by: Kathy Young & Mahmood Bashir

In 2000 Kiwanis District Governor Terri Nuemann came up with the idea of having our entire K Family provide service to our communities in the CA-NEV-HA District. The project was called "Total K Day". The project was so successful that Kiwanis International adopted the idea and renamed it "Kiwanis One Day". The project is now worldwide. On Saturday, April 19, 2014, 193 of our Kiwanis family met at Schabarum Park to provide service for Kiwanis One Day. Our family was represented by members of our Division 35 West Key Clubbers, Division 35 East Key Clubbers, the Goldstone Division of KIWIN'S, Circle K members, members of our Aktion Club, and Kiwanians from our Hacienda Heights Club and our sister club La Puente Industry Kiwanis Club. Among the attendees were immediate past and newly elected Key Club Lieutenant Governors from the Key Clubs and KI-WIN'S. Circle K was represented by Past Key Club LTG's John Yap and Serwoo Lim. Representing our Kiwanis Club were: Region 13 Trustee Lon Salgren, President and Lieutenant Governor elect Mahmood Bashir, Club Treasurer and Aktion Club Advisor Izzeldin Osman, Kiwanis One Day Coordinator Anna Wu, long time member Jim Stewart, and Assistant District Administrator for KIWIN'S and Division 35 Membership Chair Dave Wallach. Representing our sister club were Division 35 Secretary Paul White and Division 35 Kiwanian of the Year Vern Moyer. We all arrived at 8am to begin the project. Our task for the day was to paint the walls of walkways and tunnels, rake up debris along a 1/2 mile of horse trail, and to clean and beautify the gathering area for the horses. The students had an opportunity to use hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and many tools that they had not used before. Everyone worked very hard throughout the day. At the completion of the project, lunch was proved to everyone. The meal included beef hot dogs, turkey dogs and veggie burgers. Everyone had an op-portunity to customize their lunch with ketchup, mustard, relish, chili, cheese, and onions. Even though every-one worked so very hard, students took the lead and cooked all the hot dogs and veggie burgers. We had enough food to provide everyone two of everything. Some students came back latter for more food or a bowl of chili. Water was provided throughout the day. It was a hot day and we ended up going through 20 cases of water. This project allowed many of our Kiwanis Family to bond, have fun and join in a great opportunity to provide service to the community. Following lunch the two Key Club Divisions and KIWIN'S each held their Divi-sion Council Meetings (DCM). We finished our Kiwanis One Day at 5pm.There was plenty of spirit going around among the students and adults. After a full day of spirit, food and work, "How Do You Feel"?

Foundation for Disabled Youths Easter Picnic
By Ben Su The annual Easter picnic was held at Manzanita Park on Saturday, April 19th. We had roughly 120 disabled youth families and volunteers including a dozen key club members. There were lots of food ( pizza, noodles, rotisserie chicken, meatballs ..etc ). We laid over 300 eggs on the lawn and outlying areas and have the disabled children hunt for the eggs to put in their Easter bags. They were accompanied by the volunteers to play various games, all organized by the volunteers. ( ring toss, Ping-Pong ball toss, batting, bowling , mini basketball ...etc. ). At the end, every "angel " got a prize ! Taiwanese- American Princess and her court join us and volunteered for this event.

Sponsored Youth Corner
By Samantha Liu, Los Altos Key Club President This year at Key Club CNH DCON, Los Altos was recognized for a number of achievements that their club has made in the 2013-2014 term. These awards include the Kiwanis Family Foundation Recognition, Membership Retention, Increased Membersip, and Diamond Distinguished Club Recognition. However, there are a couple of individuals I would like to recognize individually. These individuals are Maharsh Patel, Samantha Liu, Judy Chen, and Mahmood Bashir. Maharsh Patel, Los Altos' Key Club's Editor, was praised for the website he created for Los Altos Key Club. Samantha Liu, Los Altos' Key Club's President, was awarded the Outstanding Club President award. Judy Chen, Los Altos' Key Club's Secretary, was awarded the Outstanding Club Secretary award and if it wasn't for her, we wouldn't have been able to obtain the District Tree award. The District Tree award is an award that notices clubs that turn in their Monthly Report Forms on time to the Lieutenant Governor. Lastly, but cer-tainly not least, our very own Kiwanis Advisor, Mahmood Bashir, was awarded the Advisor of the Year award for being a great advisor to every club he serves. All of these awards signify how much the Los Altos Key Club has grown throughout the year and foreshadow the progress that will come in this upcoming term.

Key Club District Convention 2014 - April 11th-13th
By: Maharsh Patel, Los Altos’ Key Club’s Editor On April 11th-13th, the CNH District Key Club held its 2013-2014 District Convention in the Sacramento conven-tion Center. Being with other division members on a bus all the way up to Sacramento was a great experience in itself. There was a lot of bonding between members as there was ten whole hours to do nothing but eat, sleep, talk, and use one’s phone. The actual convention was really fun, educational, and inspirational. The workshops provided great information on how positions should be run and other workshops about programs like Rustic Pathways or how to help one’s home club in general. The general sessions were great as divisions came together and cheered on LTG’s, members, and the region as a whole. There was also a great key note speaker by the name Keith Hawkins who related well with the key clubbers being hilarious yet inspirational at the same time. This whole experience inspired me to try to go BEEyond my current goals and attempt to achieve as much as possible in my last term. All in all even though it became really emotional towards the end of the weekend, I will never forget how great my first DCON was.

By Daanyaal Kumar, New Division 35 East Lt. Governor "Being able to serve the community with your Kiwanis Family is an ex-tremely rewarding experience. The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis set up an event where Key Clubbers, KIWIN’S, and Kiwanis could work together side-by-side to help beautify a park in our local community. Over a 150 mem-bers from the Kiwanis Family worked together to make this event a huge success. One of the best parts of this event was the gratification that each member received when seeing all the trash bags filled with trash, the cleared weeds, and the removal of graffiti from the walls. Thank you to the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis for providing us such a wonderful way to serve our community, and for the wonderful lunch after the event!" Thank you!

Hi guys! My name is Amber Go and it is my utmost pleasure and honor to serve as 2014-2015 Division 35 East Executive Assistant. I can't even begin to describe how happy I am to be able to serve my home, school, community, and members on a division level. ^__^ Key Club means so much to me and being able to serve as EA for D35E is absolute bliss. I AM SO EXCITED! Gosh darn it, I love Key Club so much. I am so ready to aid in 35 East's climb to new heights. LET'S DO THIS!!! - Amber Go

Farewell From D35E LT. Governor, Andy Wong
As a now past Lt. Governor for Division 35 East, I can't help but
wish to stay in Key Club forever. This was where I built my
foundation and I still remember the moment when I realized I
had a second family. There were so many "Kiwanis Moments"
throughout these past 4 years that have inspired and motivat-
ed me to become more than just a high school student. Key
Club has given me a purpose in life and has provided me with
so many opportunities to meet new people, build lasting
friendships, inspire and be inspired, and grow as a leader and
as an individual. As I gave my inspirational moment at General
Session 1 and saw the ocean of Key Clubbers, I was reminded
that my inspiration and motivation to serve came from the
members of this organization. I am so thankful for all the op-
portunities that Key Club has given me and I hope that I was
able to pay it forward by providing the same opportunities if
not more to the members I serve. Kiwanis, Key Club, CNH,
LegaBEEs, and Division 35 East, it has truly been an honor to have been able to serve alongside you. Thank you
for giving me a GOLDEN experience. I wish the 2014-2015 leaders the best of luck during their term! I can't wait
to hear and see all the amazing things all of they will accomplish. Never lose that GOLDEN love because it's not a
goodbye... it's a see you later.

Farewell From D35W LT. Governor, Connor Watts
My term as Lieutenant Governor for D35W has already come to an end,
but I could not be more grateful for the time I had serving the Key Clubs
of the division. Throughout this year, I have seen a major change in my-
self as I gained leadership skills, learned how to manage my time better,
and developed unforgettable friendships with my peers and with several
Kiwanis members—experiences that have made my time serving as Lt.
Governor more than worth the effort. However, I did have a good num-
ber of struggles along the way as well. Fortunately, several members of
this club were always there as a support system and were a tremendous
help in planning several events throughout this term.
I would especially like to thank Mr. Bashir for his help with securing transportation for our division to
Fall Rally and DCON, attending nearly every one of my DCMs and division events, and for being my role model as
a person who leads through hard work and action. Mr. Salgren also deserves a huge thanks for his help with in-
spiring me and other future leaders in our division through his work with Key Leader and for simply being one of
the most enthusiastic and uplifting people I have met. Mr. Wallach definitely cannot be left out of this either; his
work with the Rose Floats inspired me to do big things this year, and his words of encouragement (which almost
made me cry on the spot) kept me going when I started to think that no one noticed the effort I put into the divi-
sion this year.
Clearly, this club is doing something right with its support of our Key Clubs. At District Convention, Glen
A. Wilson was awarded the Distinguished Club award and Los Altos was awarded the Diamond Distinguished Club
award (an honor given to only 20-30 clubs in our district). Throughout the year, I had a few “trouble” clubs that I
had to spend extra time helping to make sure they were consistently doing well, but I never had to worry about
Glen A. Wilson or Los Altos because I knew the great leaders of those clubs
had even stronger leaders to look to in Hacienda Heights Kiwanis.
Overall, I just want to give a huge thank you to this club. You all serve as a
paragon of what a Kiwanis Club should be. The amount of service you do in
your community is astonishing, and the fact that you are also able to lend so
much support to your SLP is unbelievable to me. This truly is a club that
serves the children of the world, and I thank you all for that. Please continue
to inspire the young people around you. As one person who has been im-
pacted and inspired by your service, I can say that my time around this club
has helped shape me into the person I am now and the person I will be in
future years. Part of whatever I accomplish—to whatever any of us Key Club-
bers accomplish—is due to your service and friendship.
As I leave for Rhode Island for college this summer, the Key Clubs of Division
35 West will still be here. Even though I am sad to leave, I know that our new
Lt. Governor, Vince Nguyen, will do a phenomenal job. With his leadership
and the continually growing impact of this club, I am certain that our division
will only grow from this point on.

Ribfest 2014 Our 14th annual scholarship dinner, better known as Ribfest is scheduled for Sunday, May 4. The Ribfest committee has been hard at work, meeting each week on Mondays for the past month, planning for another successful event. The committee has worked diligently, and now its time for our members to step up to the plate, and do their part. We can only have a successful event when all of our members get on board, secure sponsorships and donations, sell business card ad's, sell tables & individual tickets, and sell oppor-tunity drawing tickets. We have sent out emails re-questing each member to donate a basket for the silent auction tables, or to donate items for the live auctions. So far we have commitments from only a third of our members, we know we can do better. There is still time, we are just under a couple of weeks away. The com-
mittee requests that all of you let us know how you want to help, we need a lot of help on the day of the event. Contact us and let us know what you would like to help with. If we are to provide the scholarships, and help various organizations in our community, and we are to provide effective and meaningful service, we must have a successful Ribfest, and raise the funds allowing us to do all we have planned to this year. This will only happen, when all of our members pitch in, get energized and get enthusiastic. We can do this, so Lets do this!

Delhaven Beautification Work Day
This is a unified effort between Delhaven, In-
dustry Hills Rotary Club, Hacienda Heights Ki-
wanis Club, Edison, California Highway Patrol,
Bentley Inc, Amigos De los Rios, the City of La
Puente, and the High School students from
your group and the Rotary group.
It is a 3 - Phase project with Phase 1 being on
the 26th of April. What we are being asked for
on Saturday, is for Kiwanians and the high
school students to work in our jungleland ar-
ea, located on the property behind the main
office facility, trimming trees, removing dead
branches and shrubbery- to allow growth of
the trees and shrubbery that is still alive. We
will also have the high school students from
the Rotary Club (with supervision) assisting
us. The day will also consist of major landscap-
ing, some tree planting, planting a garden, and
more, which will be done by other groups.

Presenting Mr. and Mrs. Jennifer & Paul Le Brun
On Saturday, April 19, 2014 Jennifer Strinz married her sole-mate Paul Le Brun. The ceremony was held in an outdoors setting at Coyote Hill Golf Course. The couple said their I Do’s with approximately 150 guests in attendance. It was a lovely ceremony and a great reception. The couple danced and then the Bride danced with her Father and the Groom danced with his Mother. Both set of parents were beaming and proud of their Children. I don’t think I have seen Ted and Nancy as happy as they were this evening. I know that we all wish the Bride and Groom happiness al-ways. Many times the following phrase was repeated to Paul - “Happy Wife, Happy Life”.
Many happy wished to the lovely couple.

M&M - Membership Matters!!
Every April, Kiwanians and their families, friends and coworkers take part in Skip-A-Meal by passing up a meal (or bringing a meal) instead of going out. They then give the cost equivalent of that meal to the Kiwanis International Foundation. These gifts help them extend their Kiwa-nis impact to children at home and around the world.
