A Message from Mrs. Hoehn

Good Morning, Bobkittens!

I’ve been wanting a piece of pie for several days now.

I looked up PIES on the internet! WOW, there are SO many kinds of pies. Pizza pies, the Mathematical Pi, Cus-tard pies, Fruit pies, Cream pies, Meringue pies, Crumble pies, Pot pies (with vegetables), Cream Catalana, Chif-fon pies, ones with nuts, ones with sweet potatoes, coconut, molasses, and sugar. Really it seems like anything can be put in a pie, even “4 and 20 blackbirds” (according to Mother Goose!). How can you have pie when you are trying to stay a home? Did you know that you can make a pie at home? To make a pie at home, I have to use a recipe. There are directions for cooking pies in cook books and on the inter-net.

Here is a pie recipe for Chess Pie. It doesn’t take many ingredients, so you might have everything at home that you need to make it. You will need a pie crust, mixing bowl, measuring cups or cup, measuring spoons, all the in-gredients, A mixing spoon and a mixer is great to have, but you can make a pie without a mixer. Mixing will take longer without a mixer.

FIRST CHECK WITH YOUR GUARDIAN BEFORE STARTING TO MAKE A PIE! It can be messy and always clean up the kitchen when done.

READ DIRECTIONS BELOW BEORE STARTING – don’t start if you don’t have all the ingredients and guardian permission! Preheat oven to 350 degrees!

CHESS PIE Ingredients – 1 9-inch deep pie crust (purchased or made at home) 1 and ½ cup sugar 1 stick softened butter (not microwaved) 1 TABLESPOON cornmeal 3 eggs that you have beaten with a fork for about 30 seconds in a different bowl and then add ¼ cup milk 1 TABLESPOON vinegar 1 TEASPOON vanilla extract Combine sugar, butter, and cornmeal. Add beaten eggs and milk, and mix well. Stir in vinegar and vanilla. Mix until well blended.

Pour into the pie crust and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Turn oven temperature down to 325 and bake for additional 40 to 45 minutes or until center of pie is set. The center of the pie is set when a table knife is stuck into the middle and comes out clean. Turn oven off and let the pie cool in the oven.

I’m off to make a Chess pie!
