Elders of Kitsumkalum and Kitselas once asked me to record and share Kalum’s history in the Zimacord Valley so that the history is known. This was in the early 1980s and I thought it would be interesting to put that history into the Informer. The information was recorded over the course of several months in 1981/1982 using the knowledge of Eddie Feak, a Kalum elder living in Metlakatla, Alaska, and Winnie Wesley. These two people were the first to explain to me the history about how Kitsumkalum came to have the entire Zimacord Valley. I also discussed the story with Lucy Hayward, another Kalum elder who lived in Port Simpson, and she agreed the information was correct. During these recording sessions, I learned that
Kitsumkalum families always had important territory in the Zimacord watershed but that there was a reason that Kalum acquired the entire valley. The information I received was written as a history at the request of Don Roberts, Sr., Paul Mason and Roy Bolton of
Kitselas. The three of them, along with Eddie Feak, guided me and then reviewed and adjusted what I wrote. This is the final version of what they approved and what they wanted me to share with the community.
It happened a long time ago. No one
knows the exact time but the story of how the Kitsumkalum came to have the Valley of the Zimacord is still remembered. This used to be the hunting grounds of the Gitlaan, who would come up the Skeena to tend their gardens and to dry their fish in

the Fall. The territory touched some of the land of the Kitsumkalum. When this story took place, there lived in Kitsumkalum, in the House of Łagaax, a chief with the name of ‘Wiidildal. His nephew, Niis Guoss, was one of the best hunters and trappers, always providing well for his family. One time when this prince was out in his territory, a bunch of Gitlaans sneaked into his village and stole his wife. They took her back to their village. When Niis Guoss returned and discovered what had happened, he decided he must go after the Gitlaans. Since this was a kidnapping, Niis Guoss expected that they would demand to receive wealth in exchange for his wife. He gathered what he considered to be the necessary amount and off he went to the village of the Gitlaans, accompanied by his bodyguard. (In those days a prince never went alone, he was always accompanied by a bodyguard.) At the Gitlaan village, Niis Guoss was met by treachery and was murdered. His bodyguard, managing to escape, ran off to Robin Town to tell the news of the death of the prince. At that time the Kitsumkalum had a very powerful and experienced man who rallied all the warriors of the Kitsumkalum and set off to avenge the death of the prince. Down the Skeena River they went to make war against the Gitlaan. Past the Gitlaan marker that stood near the big point below Kitsumkalum, the group was
spotted by a lookout. The Gitlaan were fortunate to live in a place on the Zimacord that was difficult to get to and, with the advantage of their lookouts on the Skeena River, they had always been able to prepare a defense against invading war canoes. But
when the Kitsumkalum arrived, the revenging warriors had only to take possession of a deserted village. When the Gitlaan recognized the wrong in which they had been involved, they sought to make
compensation by giving to Kitsumkalum the territory in the Zimacord Valley - for when a prince is killed, a high price must be paid. Since then, there have been no wars between the Kitsumkalum and Gitlaan, but the story of the ownership of the territories has not always been remembered by everyone. The Gitlaan were supposed to get a headstone and place it over the spot where they killed the prince, but they have never done this. This is why the Kitsumkalum have a claim to the Zimacord River and why they have a small reserve there, for the story happened before the Indian Commissioner gave out the Reserves. This is why Eddie Feak hunted beaver there with his Grandfather, Benjamin Bennett. That is all.

The Role of the Home Care Nurse
I have been working for 5 months now, and am feeling comfortable in the community. Just a brief note on some of my abilities and limitations as it pertains to my position here in the community. I am able to perform active nursing related tasks (such as wound care or rehabilitation exercises) with a Doctors order only. I must be under the direction of the physician responsible for your care. For things such as assessments, education and health status monitoring, I do not require a doctors order. Just an appointment. I am able and very willing to come in for elder home visits or chronic disease management visits, upon request only. I will require a phone call or an email with a request for home visit. I will no longer be going door to door to introduce myself and ‘check in’, as this has been done. If you would like an appointment with me, please email me at [email protected] or phone 250-635-6172 and we will set something up. I am also available as an advocate for my clients, if you are having issues accessing medical care, funding ect, please call me and I will try and help to resolve the issue. I am unable to diagnose medical conditions, illnesses or injuries. This must be done by a physician who is overseeing your care. If you require medical attention for a condition not yet diagnosed, please contact and visit your physician, and I will follow up with your care once the issue has been established. If you wish to speak to me regarding health concerns, please don’t hesitate to call, just be aware of my limitations. Thank you for making my time here in the community enjoyable, Amy Christian, LPN.
