Movie summer surges upon us, as our first film makes all too clear.

BattleshipLet’s be honest: Battleship is Bullship. That honor is soon justified, when Lieu-tenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) steals a burrito to impress the va-voom daughter (Brooklyn Decker) of an admiral (Liam Neeson). A booz-ing screw-up at 26, Alex nearly flushes out of the Navy, but then the aliens arrive.

Of course, they arrive during 14-nation fleet exercises off Hawaii. Of course, Alex will soon command our one little destroyer fighting inside the aliens’ huge protection shield, subverting by pure guy-guts their

superior technology. Of course, his main helper will be a Japanese captain who is the final, healing apology for Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Of course, Alex’s va-voom blonde will

lead the charge in the hills above Honolulu, backed by a leg-less Army veteran.

As more bullship ballast, we get references to Colonel Harland “KFC” Sanders, comedian Jerry Lewis, and the equally ancient Greek poet Homer. We have singer Rihanna as slinky-cute chief petty offi-cer Cora “Weps” Raikes, a recruiting poster all by herself. Supremely, we have vast effects and mighty explo-sions, because this film is based on a Hasbro game. The toy-and-game empire has nimbly and digitally

recruited the U.S. Navy (including several San Diego–based ships). Given all the firepower, director Peter Berg

(Friday Night Lights) does not need to fine-tune dialogue such as “I got a bad feeling about this” and “We’re

all gonna die!”Beyond Taylor Kitsch, there is

kitsch bilge to rival Independence Day, The Perfect Storm, and (my fave) Con Air. Alex and his hardy crew put the battleship Missouri to sea. Never mind that it became a war museum in 1992. A bunch of semi-derelict WWII vets are ready for action (The AARP Dozen?). “I got eight boilers hot, rock

and roll!” croaks one old salt, after the remarkably brief fire-up. Even the aliens are impressed. The old ship can turn on a dime, gets jolted to a stop by its anchor chain, and blasts holes in hardware we don’t even understand.

There is a tiny guest gig (unin-tended by him) for President Obama. There is a bearded, nerdy intellectual who becomes a man by duking an alien. The aliens look like the head-trip of a medieval-armor fanatic. But they’re not human, not Hasbro heroes. Only our guys can manually haul a thousand-pound shell through the narrow, twisting corridors of the Mis-souri. Listen closely, armchair admi-rals, and you can hear Steven Seagal saluting all the way from Under Siege.★

BernieJack Black, a likeable actor, simply had to play the most likeable man in Car-thage, Texas. He is Bernhardt Tiede II, currently in prison yet still loved in Carthage for having been a funeral director of exemplary tact, taste, and Methodist piety. Bernie was always do-ing good things, as if to reward the liv-ing for their future deaths. And while it was suspected that Bernie, a pudgy budgie of a man, was “light in the loaf-ers,” that doesn’t mean the movie will tarnish his rep by talking about gay sex tapes found after his arrest.

As if drawn to his polar opposite, Bernie even sprinkled his benign charm on mean, rich widow Marjo-rie Nugent. She was like Carthage’s resident Roman, widely hated. After much fun together, Marjorie became possessive and controlling, which led to a bad gun moment and an enter-taining trial (rather pointless given Bernie’s fast, weeping confession). Like a chorus of gossips, many amusing locals offer testimony, fondly directed by Texas-rooted director Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, Dazed and Confused, and Black’s signature hit School of Rock).

Shirley MacLaine squints grimly and chews food compulsively as mean Marj. Matthew McConaughey, as a preening DA, twangs along with down-home accents. But Bernie belongs to Black. Smiling above his big, possibly padded gut, he walks in tidy duck steps, sings hymns and show tunes, and talks sweetly to his “DLOLs” (dear little old ladies). Accepted in Carthage because he made genial conformity an almost angelic calling, Bernie is like a joint project of Frank Capra, the Coen Brothers, and Christopher Guest.

This amusing, patronizing oddity of a film has a good eye and ear and exactly the right star. We can imagine

the DLOLs fussing over Black, tell-ing him how they adored him with Kate Winslet in The Holiday. No one else on film has so deftly trimmed the nasal hairs of a corpse. Liberace, as the funeral beautician in The Loved One, would have swooned in envy.★★★

Men in Black IIIIn what must be a final run at the bank, Men in Black III arrives a de-cade after the last installment. The first two MiB shows grossed over a billion worldwide, providing rich justifica-tion for director Barry Sonnenfeld to reunite with black-suited, high-tech agents K (Tommy Lee Jones) and J (Will Smith). Again the aim is pure diversion, and again the packaging is stylish, though the use of the Chrysler Building doesn’t equal the 1997 film’s display of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Gug-genheim Museum.

The love of New York is palpable. Weird critters are enjoyable. Banter is genially snarky. Jemaine Clement is Boris, a suitably disgusting chief vil-lain. And Smith sighs, “I’m getting too old for this,” which spotlights the obvious. Smith at 43 is buff but now too mature for J’s brash, peppy boy-ishness. As his surly mentor K, Jones at 65 looks ready for the San Antonio Wax Museum. While still dropping his lines into place with cool gravity, his weary funk makes Kafka’s Joseph K in The Trial seem a cockeyed optimist.

There is 3-D to embellish the action and cameos for Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. As the new agency boss, Emma Thompson is little-used but intones perfectly, “Ladies and gentle-men, other life forms ….” Jones van-ishes for the story’s long time-trip to 1969. For that phase, Josh Brolin steps

in as K, expertly imitating the Jones drawl but looking more like a rumpled, enlarged Matt Damon. The climax involves the great Apollo 11 launch at “Cape Canaveral,” although the NASA site was called Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973.★★

The Moth Diaries Early reviews have argued that direc-tor Mary Harron has fallen below her

previous level (American Psycho, The Notorious Bettie Page) with The Moth Diaries. They might better have em-phasized the intelligent skill that Har-ron, who scripted with Rachel Klein from Klein’s novel, has brought to such generic goods. Maybe those re-viewers wanted another soapy Twilight swoon or extravagant piffle such as Dark Shadows.

The appealing Sarah Bolger stars as Rebecca, returning to her third

year at a posh female prep school, formerly a Victorian hotel. Daughter of a suicidal poet whom she idolized, she burrows into friendship with Lucie (Sarah Gadon). But Lucie is lured into the chilly orbit of a new girl, the tall Ernessa (Lily Cole), a vampire with gothic roots in the old hotel. Harron and photographic-ace Declan Quinn create a lush, moody, whispery ambi-ence of secrets, moonstruck walks, erotic rivalry, repressive authority, nocturnal blood, and a sexy teacher (Scott Speedman).

The use of moths is sensual, like the creepy plant moments in Phil Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The atmospherics pivot on Bolger’s fine, layered performance. We do wonder why Ernessa, who came from the past to recruit Rebecca, needs to dispatch other victims. The finish provides standard payoffs (blood gushing in a library, curdling screams, a burning coffin), as if hoping to satisfy

Men in Black III has whiffs of the old black magic.

dull clunks. But this does not, like the idiotic ending of Roman Polanski’s The Ninth Gate, collapse into total hokum. ★★

The Avengers — A labor of love on the part of über-geek director Joss Whedon, if not necessarily a labor of art. The genius here shows not in the story (magic geegaw!), nor in the performances (Mark Ruffalo’s embittered Bruce Banner/Hulk excepted), but in Whedon’s ability to juggle six disparate comic-book heroes while gods rage and aliens invade. Not surprisingly, the best bits come in between the raging and the invading when outsized human personalities are allowed to come out and play, nicely or otherwise. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel — Or, Grand Hotel meets Downton Abbey in the old Merchant & Ivory curry kitchen. An ag-ing bunch of swell Brits (though Penelope Wilton is a sour pickle) gather at a pretty, decaying hotel in Udaipur, India, for sunset lessons in living. It is very tidy and quaintly picturesque but humanly engaging. Dark Shadows — Tim Burton’s tiresome tribute to the TV goth soaper, with Johnny Depp fully committed as the heavily made-up vampire Barnabas. Their devotion is real, but the film is a rummage of poor gags and plot fragments that add up to little. It has campy design touches, corny creep-outs, vivid women (Michelle Pfeiffer, Bella Heathcote, witty Helena Bonham Carter, vampy witch Eva Green), and an aura of wasted expenditure. The Dictator — Sacha Baron Cohen plays “Admiral-General” Aladeen, the brutal dictator of a fictional Middle Eastern country who finds himself stranded in Manhattan after a case of mistaken identity. From the outset, much of the humor relies on sequences of shtick that outlast their wit. Behind the guise of political satire, the movie attempts to gain immunity from its offensiveness. Most scenes reach beyond stupidity to the point of verbal assault, such as those involving rape and pedophilia. First Position — Filmmakers follow the lives of several aspiring ballet dancers from around the globe (ages 9 to 19) as they train for the Youth America Grand Prix, a prestigious dance competition in New York City that holds the potential for career stardom. The dancers offer some humanity to the generic storytelling. There is a curious paradox of maturity in them — the immature development of their bodies vs. the mature grace of their abilities; their youthful age vs. their sophisticated speech. Unfortunately, the film quality is a far cry from the poise and creativity of the perfor-mances. 2012. — J.R.★★ (HILLCREST)

Headhunters — A Norwegian thriller “inspired” by American thrillers, now set for a Hollywood remake. Aksel Hennie plays a top corporate recruiter in Oslo who, to maintain the lifestyle of his tall Viking wife, steals an illicit Rubens painting. He spirals into a terrible mess, including a fully loaded outhouse. Credible actors and Morten Tyldum’s fast, slick direction cannot relieve the incredible plot from its self-strangling suffocation of logic. 2012. — D.E.★ (HILLCREST)

The Hunger Games — In the future, rebel districts are punished by the Reaping: every year they have to send a couple of teenagers to the Capitol. There, the kiddies fight to the death in a regulated, televised competition. Sloppily directed by Gary Ross, it’s more games than hunger and more a comment on media manipulation than games. But Jennifer Lawrence keeps things gripping as Katniss, a girl brave enough to volunteer in place of her little sister, pretty enough to charm the audi-ence, and rugged enough to face the brutality of the arena. Hysteria — A factually derived British comedy about Victorian invention fever and sexual repression, as prim doctors de-vise the first vibrator to treat the perceived plague of female “hysteria.” Maggie Gyl-lenhaal delivers a bravura performance as a feminist social worker who sees through the patronizing foolishness. Wilde and Shaw did such humor more wittily, without the jarring (even in 2012) jump from dainty chat about parsnips to a fellatio joke. Also, duck humping. Tanya Wexler directed a gifted cast: Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett, Felicity Jones, Gemma Jones. 2012. — D.E.★★ (LA JOLLA VILLAGE)

Marley — Pious but not sanctimonious, Kevin Macdonald’s documentary on Jamaican-reggae-god Bob Marley hits all the high points and some low ones. It is rich in concert and interview material and maintains a sexy pulse of Caribbean af-firmation, thanks to the nectar of goodwill in most of Marley’s songs. And in him. Monsieur Lazhar — From French Canada, a stirringly direct, human film about an émigré Algerian who talks his way into teaching at a Montreal school. He helps repair the traumatized morale of students and staff after a loved teacher commits suicide. In the fine cast (the kids are beyond just acting), Mohamed Fellag as Lazhar has the power of an unpretentious life force, vulnerable but imposing. Murder Capital of the World — Director Charlie Minn points his camera at the recent surge in violence and death in Juarez, Mexico, a border city and battleground between warring drug cartels. Unfortunately, Minn captures little more than talking-head interviews, most of which rehash the same information for 90 minutes. Of the “experts” Minn consults (including himself), some prove more engaging than others, but their opinions are given no cinematic structure to make them cohesive — they’re simply buoys in a sea of stock news footage. 2012. — J.R.★ (HORTON PLAZA 14)

Otter 501 — Katie Pofahl, aspiring marine biologist, spends her half year at Monterey Bay helping to save an adorable, orphaned otter pup, with crucial help from the famous aquarium. The attempt at narrative framing, its Facebook touches applied like girlish mascara, is feeble. But the tireless otter world is opened up for us by splendid photography in Bob Talbot’s plea for our obligatory bond to endangered sea life. 2012. — D.E.★★ (GASLAMP 15; FROM 5/25)

Polisse — A churning, driven French film about a child-protection unit of the Paris po-lice and how the harsh impact of their work (re: prostitution, violence, abandonment, pedophilia) lacerates their lives even as it

bonds them. The director Maïwenn cast her-self as a photographer who falls for the unit’s sensitive hothead (vivid Joeystarr, a rapper). Despite stunning intimacies (an African boy losing his homeless mom, a raped girl facing her stillborn infant), the emotive shrapnel and volatile close-ups can make you feel you’ve been caught in a crudely compressed TV series. 2012. — D.E.★★ (KEN; FROM 5/25)

Safe — A grimy homage to New York City before Giuliani applied the Disney-fied glaze. Wanted by Russian mobsters, the Chinese Triad, and his former NYPD allies, Jason Statham finds himself having to protect a four-year-old Chinese girl (Catherine Chan) whose photographic memory houses a precious numerical code. The story is so unnecessarily intricate it leaves once-promising director Boaz Yakin (Fresh, A Price Above Rubies) little more to do than cross-cutting to show parallel action. 2012. — S.M.★ (HORTON PLAZA 14)

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen — The charm stretches but doesn’t break in Lasse Hallström’s odd, gentle comedy about a visionary sheikh (Amr Waked) who devises a dam, river, and imported salmon in dry, hot Yemen. Caught up in his crazy but moving scheme are two Brit dreamers (Em-ily Blunt, Ewan McGregor). It has some of the old Ealing Studio–grace of loveable silli-ness, though Kristin Scott Thomas is pushy as a political opportunist. One imagines Lawrence of Arabia looking at this from the desert, rubbing his eyes, and dreaming of a salmon steak. 2012. — D.E.★★★ (HORTON PLAZA 14)

What to Expect When You’re Ex-pecting — A multi-character (pregnant) chick flick with five converging storylines about expectant couples. Don’t expect much in the way of wit or originality from this Lifetime Channel stray, but the ap-pealing cast and cinematographer Xavier Pérez Grobet’s balanced ‘Scope frames help defray much of the pain induced by a labored script. Respect: A Musical Celebration of Women A women’s history of the 20th Century told through popular songs. The musical came from Dorothy Marcic’s book Respect: Women and Popular Music. Though the songs are fairly predictable, the revue calls attention to the lyrics and how the words underline values women were expected to embrace (going from “Stand by Your Man” to “You Don’t Own Me”). Most of the 50 songs are brief excerpts, which frustrates since the four-person cast could belt them with brass: Leigh Scarritt, Kelsey Venter, Nancy Snow Carr, and Lisa H. Payton perform with tight harmonics, and when given the spotlight, they shine. The Scottsboro Boys John Kander and Fred Ebb’s final collabo-ration tells the story of nine young black men, falsely accused of rape, as a minstrel show. The effect (tragedy in the guise of shuck and jive) is disturbing — and at times the antics cartoon the truth. The framing haunts the production the way the accusation drives David Thompson’s book. Directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, the ensemble cast is spectacular.
