From the President of the KTAI

“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening

new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new

paths.” ~ Walt Disney

As President of the Kite Trade Association, International, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend our

27th annual Trade Show and Convention, January 10-12, at the International Palms Resort and

Conference Center in sunny Orlando, Florida. It is exciting to be back on the East Coast again,

especially where you can combine business with pleasure at one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world!

The International Palms Resort is located on International Drive, which is home to six of the world’s greatest theme parks: SeaWorld,

Discovery Cove, Aquatica (SeaWorld’s Waterpark), Wet ‘n Wild, Universal Studios, and Islands of Adventure, as well 485+ outlet stores,

150+ restaurants, 3 entertainment complexes and 3 stadium-style cinemas! For more info, see www.InternationalDriveOrlando.com.

And let’s not forget the granddaddy of all theme parks, Walt Disney World, which is only 15 minutes from our hotel. The hotel itself

features a full-service restaurant, fitness center, pool and jacuzzi, sports bar and pool bar. It is within walking distance of

approximately 40 venues including restaurants, entertainment and shopping. Visit www.InternationalPalmsOrlando.com for full

details on this fabulous hotel. You’d want to come here even if there was no trade show and convention!

To further entice you, this year’s trade show features a business bonus as well. Because we have opted to locate only 15 minutes

away from Surf Expo with overlapping dates, you can attend Surf, which runs January 8-10, prior to attending KTAI. For those of you

who haven’t attended Surf Expo, it’s a pretty unique and amazing trade show, with lots of products perfect for kite shops.

The other exciting thing about this year’s convention is that we are introducing a rebranding of the KTAI, to reflect our vibrant and

diverse membership. We have adopted the tag line, “Kites, Toys, and Innovation!” Our core is kites, and always will be! But today’s

kite shop has expanded to feature a wide variety of products of interest to kite and wind enthusiasts, as well as the general public.

Many of these other products bring non-kiting folks in to our stores, where they are then introduced to the exciting world of kiting –

creating new kite enthusiasts!

This expansion of our mission is reflected in the surge of new KTAI members this past year. They reflect a broad spectrum of

manufacturers of fun products, and retailers with kite shops and other stores that carry kite products. This continuing diversity will

make for an even more exciting trade show that will benefit all us old members as well!

Last but definitely not least, The Kiteman cometh! Bruce Flora of Kiteman Productions, that is! We are lucky to be meeting in Orlando,

the home of Kiteman Productions, and to have kite legend Bruce Flora as the keynote speaker for our convention. I spent about a half-

hour on the phone with Bruce, whom I had never met, and I was mesmerized. He and I talked about the convention and how honored

we would be to have him share stories of his amazing innovative ways of using kites in large-scale entertainment venues. Read more

on page 6.

Speaking of seminars, there are times when we have all have to CYA (Cover Your Ass-ets!) Manufacturers, distributors and retailers

will all benefit from hearing G.K. Mangelson from The American Society of Asset Protection discuss topics such as premises and

product liability, wrongful termination, and harassment & bias. His workshop, and all of this year’s offerings, are outlined in this

brochure, which also includes some background information on Bruce Flora and Kiteman Productions. Be sure and look over these

offerings carefully, and I’m sure you will find many reasons to join me at this year’s convention.

What continues to draw KTAI members to our trade show and convention year after year is our unique combination of a trade show,

and a full convention featuring educational programs, lively discussion and sharing groups among members, awards ceremonies

honoring members’ achievements, and both a banquet and a reception to give members an opportunity to connect and socialize!

New exhibitors have said they never had so much fun at a trade show! And new retail attendees have said they have never learned so

much and felt so supported at a business event. We’d love to have you join us for all this fun and support – you and your business will

not regret it. See you in Orlando!

Convention Boot Camp and Mentor Match-Up This workshop is an updated version of our annual Retail Boot Camp, and it’s a must for any first-time attendees! “Old-timers” can also learn a few new tricks, and share their expertise with newcomers. We will be discussing how to get the most out of the trade show so you can tailor your strategy to meet your retail goals. We will also be answering all of your burning questions about the convention in general: When do we eat? What DO you wear to the banquet? In addition, we continue our successful mentor program and we’ll be matching up interested first timers with seasoned KTAI veterans for individualized assistance, not only at the convention but throughout the year. Past mentor relationships have proved helpful for the mentees and rewarding for the mentors. Any experienced KTAI members who would like to contribute to the success of our new attendees are encouraged to attend this workshop. Stop by the registration desk if you are unable to attend this workshop, but want to be a part of the mentor program.

Mentor Meet-Up! This informal half-hour before the banquet is an opportunity for mentors and mentees to get together and debrief after the trade show, socialize, and exchange contact information for ongoing discussions throughout the year.

Retail Idea Exchanges These two moderated open exchanges give retailers the opportunity to share and learn about products featured at the KTAI show and beyond. Don’t miss the chance to hear from your colleagues about what works for them, what new products they have discovered, and what got them excited at this year’s trade show!

Retail Idea Exchange (RIE) #1: OUTSIDE KTAI. Have you been to any new and exciting trade shows this past

year? Our location close to Surf Expo will allow some of you to discover new finds there and to share that info with those who are not able to add Surf to their schedule. Have you tried something different and want to share your success with your fellow KTAI members? RIE #1 is the place to share info about products and experiences outside of and beyond our KTAI Trade Show. Seeing is believing, so if possible, please bring a sample of any product(s) you are recommending and manufacturer/distributor contact information. This always-lively exchange is not to be missed! Come share your ideas and pick up some great tips from your colleagues.

Retail Idea Exchange (RIE) #2: TRADE SHOW TREASURES. Now is your chance to focus on what you

have seen the first day of the trade show. What new products “lit your fire?” What did you find that you can’t wait to try out in your store? Did you make any surprising new discoveries? What new vendors did you visit? The focus of RIE #2 is what’s available at our own trade show . Don’t miss the opportunity to maximize your remaining time with our exhibitors. Come share your finds and make sure you aren’t missing something important when you return to the trade show floor for day two!

Fifth Annual Exhibitors’ Strut! Now in its fifth year, this popular workshop gives exhibitors a chance to “strut their stuff”; to showcase their hot new designs, demonstrate products, answer questions from retailers, talk about show specials, and more! Retailers also have a chance to meet new exhibitors and learn what they have to offer to help boost sales! Attendees will have a definite advantage when they hit the trade show floor on opening day. Knowing in advance about show specials and new designs means you use your valuable time for specific questions and order writing when you visit exhibitors’ booths. Exhibitors appreciate the opportunity to have everyone hear the same information all at once, so they can focus more on the needs of individual businesses on the trade show floor. Don’t miss this head start on the trade show!

Keynote Speaker: Bruce Flora, Kiteman Productions There are so many reasons to attend this year’s Trade Show and Convention – some familiar, some new. But you may want to attend for no other reason than to hear 2015’s amazing keynote speaker: Bruce Flora, President of Kiteman Productions. Bruce will share stories and present an engaging slide show covering his decades of producing professional kite shows at theme parks and other big-name entertainment venues throughout the world.

Some of you know Bruce Flora well, have even worked with him on some of his productions. Some of you have never heard of him, because his use of kites is so unique, and definitely out of the mainstream. Here is a quote from an article in the Drachen Foundation Journal, Spring 2007, which I encourage you to check out online at www.drachen.org :

Flora’s kiting is different, even unique. He had the insight to rule out the pesky wind by using mechanical tows, either vehicles or boats, for his stunt kites. Thus he and his crew fly not only against the breeze as is usual, but with it. When there is no wind at all they also fly with no problem. “Industrial kiting,” is what he calls it. When fireworks are added (and maybe strobes, onboard luminescent lighting, spotlights, and reflectors), as they are for night performances, it becomes the catchy “kiting on steroids.”

Bruce has such a varied and interesting background, he would be a fascinating keynote speaker even if he didn’t fly kites! Born, mostly raised, and educated in the Midwest, he spent much of his childhood in Panama, where his father was a missionary. After college, where he trained as a musician, Flora took a range of jobs. He served as a photocopy technician in Ohio, did weather routing for ships in Panama, served as a consultant in Latin America for Food for the Hungry International, and built log homes in Canada. Then he and partner Pete Foy set up an airtoys importing business. In order to drum up interest, they gave shows at balloon festivals, fairs, “anywhere we could.” It was then Flora had his epiphany. “While taping a kite video, we couldn’t find any wind. With a film crew hanging around waiting, I had the idea using a motorized vehicle to create our own wind. We strapped my partner on top of my VW camper and began flying. That was the beginning. Soon we gave up importing and concentrated on flying.” (from Drachen Foundation Journal, Spring 2007)

A production in Montreal brought Bruce to the attention of Disney, who hired him in 1988 to produce shows at Walt Disney World. A permanent move to Florida followed, and Bruce has created kite extravaganzas for a number of the theme parks in the Orlando area, in addition to his international shows. Through the years, Bruce has mastered the ability to invent, and then re-invent, himself in response to the changing economy. We can all benefit from his insights about how to do what you love in new and different ways to keep up with the times!

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear and meet this unique kiting pioneer who has introduced kite flying as entertainment to millions of people around the world!

Here’s what KTAI President, Elaine Leitner, has to say about the keynote speaker…I heard a couple of sample stories from him that

left me eager to hear more! His has been a fascinating journey, and he continues to innovate and adapt to changing needs in the

entertainment industry. He’s also bringing a slide show, and I can’t wait! If you can’t wait, too, go to his website www.kiteman.net

and/or search Kiteman Productions on YouTube for some amazing video examples of his work! His presentation is just one of the

many seminars available to you as a trade show & convention attendee, and it is one you do not want to miss!

Protecting Your Assets Do you want to become “invincible to lawsuits”? Save money on taxes? Protect yourself from product liability? G.K. Mangelson from The American Society of Asset Protection will provide an overview of how we can prevent lawsuits, reduce taxes to the legal minimum, and create a successful estate and business succession plan. His advice has relevance for kite manufacturers, distributors and retailers as well. This workshop is all about protecting your assets and getting your financial house in order!

Second KTAI Retail Member: The Kite Loft – Ocean City, MD

I have been attending the KTAI Convention for many years now.

Each and every trip brings new ideas that help improve my business.

The networking opportunities alone, make attending the convention

worthwhile… Jay Knerr

KTAI Retail Member: Klig's Kites - Myrtle Beach, SC

Great 2014 trade show! I met some new vendors and worked with some existing ones.

Although a good bit can be accomplished on the phone when your negotiating with a vendor I

find more gets done face to face. In addition I had the opportunity to meet with my fellow

retailers and share ideas. I find this very refreshing to hear the prospective of someone who

is doing what you’re doing but in a different way.

KTAI Manufacturer/Wholesaler Member: In The Breeze – Bend, OR

I believe that In the Breeze’s involvement with the KTAI has had a direct impact on our growth and our

understanding of the kite and outdoor decorative market. The KTAI has been invaluable in helping us to

recognize trends, gain product knowledge and to establish a loyal customer base among many other

benefits. Bill Dual
