Combining High Design with Value-Conscious Design

H as the pendulum swung from high design

to no design when it comes to today’s

kitchens and baths? Absolutely not. What has

happened is this: High-end design has combined

with value-conscious design to create longer-

lasting spaces.

But, as all industry professionals agree, achieving

this combination is a bit tricky. “You must get

professional advice on kitchen and bath design to

do this right,” says Jason Kontos, editor in chief,

New York Spaces magazine. “There’s nothing

worse than making an expensive mistake in your

home, especially with a kitchen or bath.”

Value-conscious design doesn’t mean

inexpensive or low quality products or service,

experts are clear to point out. It does mean,

however, spending a bit more money on—and

time researching—quality materials and opting

for simple, functional, low-maintenance design

that will stand the test of time.

But, it wasn’t always like that in kitchen and

bath design, when the focus seemed to center

on aesthetics versus function. Experts all agree

that many of the superfl uous bells and whistles

of yesterday’s kitchens and bathrooms may

not make the cut in 2011. According to recent

trend-spotting by the National Kitchen & Bath

Association, luxury kitchens may still have

beverage stations, but they are concealed; there

may be bold colors in the space, but they are

splashes of vibrancy as a backdrop to the broader

stroke of more neutral tones; and granite may

still be popular, but countertops are now being

thoughtfully customized to fi t the task performed

rather than opting for large and unusable

expanses of stone. “No matter what the style,

suburbs or city, kitchens now look cleaner and

streamlined,” says Kontos. “There are fewer fussy

design distractions in kitchens and bathrooms.”

That doesn’t mean kitchen or bath design has

become any easier. Renovating a kitchen or

bath is still stressful, but designers and suppliers

are acutely aware of the frustrations and report

that they’ve revamped remodeling processes

to make it smoother for clients. There’s more

communication, fewer surprises, and higher levels

of satisfaction when it comes to fi nished projects.

As you read about the local and highly trained

and experienced design and service professionals

in the following pages, you will see clear evidence

of how they have shifted deeper into thoughtfully

offering a blend of high design with value-

conscious kitchen and bathroom design.by M A R I L Y N Z E L I N S K Y - S Y A R T O

There is a reason behind every detail and design in Arclinea’s kitchen

cabinetry. Whether it’s a suspended herb-growing station or a height-

adjustable dining table attached to an island, architect Antonio Citterio

designed Arclinea as a functional luxury kitchen cabinetry line inspired

by the most elegant commercial kitchens. It takes but a second to

admire a well-appointed commercial style kitchen for its clean and

streamlined design, ease of maintenance, stainless shine, and specialized

details that make it so functional. Citterio captured all of the mood and

ambience of a fi ve-star restaurant, along with the gleaming ease of

stainless steel, in the Arclinea collection.

“The mindset of our trendsetting clients has changed to one of

wanting value and a timeless investment that will hold up well without

sacrifi cing high design and functionality,” says Nazneen Ahmed, Nova

Studio’s showroom manager. “Gathering in the kitchen is a universal

cultural experience, and Citterio designed a kitchen collection where

families and guests can sit together with great ease.”

Stainless steel is one of the signature mediums for Arclinea’s

N O VA S T U D I O I N T E R N AT I O N A L

designs, and it is artfully combined with other fi nishes and woods

to create a warm collage of textures. Arclinea’s fi ne details include

warming countertops for keeping aromatic breads toasty and cooling

tops to serve chilled hors d’oeuvres. “It lets a host create a beautiful

presentation when entertaining, while keeping it highly functional,” says

Ahmed. “Clients are always wowed when they come into our showroom

because they see an idea that was always on their wish list, but never

knew existed until they see our kitchens.”

VALUE AND A TIMELESS

INVESTMENT THAT WILL HOLD UP

There may be no one that knows the luxury kitchen market better than

Allmilmö’s Lothar C. Birkenfeld. The company’s longtime CEO has

honed Allmilmö’s capacity to customize the top quality German-made

contemporary kitchen cabinetry, as well as European bathroom furniture,

to absolute perfection. “If a color, a type of wood, or a gadget doesn’t

exist, we’ll fi nd it, create it, or fi nd an alternative for our clients,” says

Birkenfeld, who notes that interior designers love the creativity they can

express when specifying an Allmilmö kitchen. “We haven’t had a request

for an unusual color yet because we offer so many colors already.”

Allmilmö thrives on its ability to have complete quality control over

its products because of its highly automated and advanced factory in

Germany, which manufactures all kitchen cabinet parts, including fronts

themselves. The products are so durable and well-made that Birkenfeld

says that it’s not unusual for the company to get a call from a client with

a 30-year-old Allmilmö kitchen who simply needs a new door hinge. For

example, Allmilmö offers a lacquer fi nish which is at least seven layers

deep and air dried. That matters because air-dried lacquer is much

more durable than a baked-on fi nish. Allmilmö’s expertise in the highest

quality bookmatched veneer is legendary, as well.

A L L M I L M Ö THE FANTASTIC KITCHEN AND BATH

For 2011, Birkenfeld sees more kitchens designed with a combination

of fi nishes, whether it’s lacquer with veneer or lacquer with glass or

steel. But that’s why Allmilmö’s customization process stands as the

company’s strongest suit. “According to the Webster dictionary, custom

means anything made or modifi ed to personal taste,” adds Birkenfeld.

From clients who prefer the look of fl at, fl ush cabinetry without handles

or pulls to the homeowner who wants veneer crafted from a beloved

family tree, Allmilmö has the unsurpassed custom capabilities to bring

original ideas to reality.

Even in a tough economy, cabinet expert and East Hill Cabinetry owner

Anthony Maucieri has managed to develop his business and become

one of the most successful stories in kitchen and bath design over the

past decade. In fact, the company’s revenues have grown 2,600 percent

since opening its doors in 2007. At the age of 26, and with a background

steeped in cabinetry design and renovation, Maucieri has tapped into a

need in Westchester homeowners who are seeking a kitchen and bath

design fi rm with the highest level of service.

While every renovation is stressful, East Hill is devoted to minimizing

the anxiety with its seamless process that bridges the gap between

design and construction. Maucieri’s ability to understand, relate, and

appropriately react to his clients’ demands comes from his many years

of experience working with contractors. “I realized that there was a

need in the marketplace for a different kind of renovation process,”

says Maucieri about his decision to open a full-service showroom in

Briarcliff Manor. “At East Hill, clients receive personal service from a

family business with a superb reputation and a complete dedication to

customer satisfaction.”

In addition to superior service and top-quality products, East

Hill Cabinetry has recently launched The Hidden Hills Collection, an

exclusive line of handcrafted, hand-joined custom cabinets. Every

detail of the collection is custom-designed by East Hill Cabinetry and

hand-built by Countryside Woodcraft, a team of Mennonite craftsmen

and a family-owned business located in Massachusetts. To maintain the

highest quality, The Hidden Hills Collection can only be created for eight

kitchens per year, and are installed by the craftsmen who constructed

them. “With a guaranteed lifetime warranty, our cabinets are designed

like furniture, made to outlast generations with complete precision and

careful attention to detail,” adds Maucieri.

SINCE DESIGNING OVER ONE HUNDRED PROJECTS, EAST HILL CABINETRY IS PROUD TO CLAIM 100 PERCENT

SATISFACTION FROM EVERY CL IENT.

Designing kitchens and baths in Manhattan is

certainly a challenge, but this family-owned, full-

service design fi rm and major appliance sales and

installation company is well known for the years

of experience it brings to New York City-specifi c

projects. Elgot’s staff has the knowledge in

handling issues unique to Manhattan’s residential

projects, including small-space planning, air

conditioning and major appliance installation, to

working with arcane building codes and co-op

regulations.

“Today, our Manhattan clients are looking

for kitchen products that offer more quality and

value than ever before,” says Ellen Elias, whose

father and uncle founded Elgot over 65 years

ago. “Value means having a kitchen or bath that

is scaled back without compromising what you

need to enjoy living in the space.”

Besides superior service and knowledge of

what it takes to get a kitchen or bath built in the

city, Elgot offers Manhattanites what they crave

right now—cabinets with some of the best-

available storage options. For example, Culinablu,

one of Elgot’s newer cabinetry lines, has ample

base cabinets, lift-up wall cabinet doors, and

refi ned shelf designs so every available inch of

space is used for storage. In addition, Elgot’s

showroom features a large selection of appliances

from Miele and Sub-Zero to Viking, Wolf, Bosch,

and Gaggenau. Whatever confi guration your

space, Elgot’s team can help you select the right

products at the right size to meet your unique

kitchen and bath needs.

Manhattan kids can have the best of

contemporary Italian design, too, when they

have semi-custom bedroom furniture from the

European Kitchen Center (EKC). “It’s tough

to fi nd quality and well-designed children’s

furniture for small New York City spaces,” says

Jim Pinkenberg of EKC. “Clients often fi nd that

buying lower-cost kids’ furnishings is just a

bandage on a space problem.”

When a family of four moves into a two-

bedroom apartment, EKC’s solutions can help

siblings live together in harmony in one room.

EKC’s solutions to the urban children’s bedroom

dilemma include various confi gurations of semi-

customized bedding, cabinetry, and platforms

arranged to make every inch count with ample

built-in workspace and storage. The furniture fi ts

into small spaces like puzzle pieces, with layers

of moveable components and cabinetry.

As in Italy, where a properly designed

children’s furniture line is typically found in a

design center carrying kitchen cabinetry, EKC has

followed tradition. The children’s furniture line

is an outgrowth of EKC’s modern Italian kitchen

cabinetry line, Assim. “Our newest cabinet doors

are now thicker, and shorter toe kicks make Assim

look more like living room furniture than kitchen

cabinetry,” adds Pinkenberg. The newest colors

to complement the crisp, clean lines of Assim’s

kitchen cabinets are Tobacco—a less-extravagant

gold tone, and Hemp—a grayer beige that has an

earthier hue.

Grande Central Showrooms, a division of Central Plumbing Specialties, offers an unparalleled and diverse selection of quality products for kitchen and

bath, from traditional and contemporary to transitional and eclectic. Its newest showroom on 56th Street in Manhattan caters expressly to architects and

the design community, offering products from international designers such as Phillipe Starck, Sieger, Ross Lovegrove, and Norman Foster, plus Duravit,

Lacava, Bissonnet, Grohe, Julien, Zucchetti, Villeroy & Boch, and KWC, just to name a few.

Warren Frankel, vice president, attributes the company’s growing success, even in a competitive economic climate, to its outstanding customer

service, along with an enormous selection of products from numerous manufacturers. “Our showroom staff has extensive product knowledge because

they are frequently trained in house by the manufacturers, and they can troubleshoot problems on any project,” Frankel adds.

Frankel and his showroom managers have seen a shift in customers’ wants and needs when it comes to kitchens and baths. “For example, many

clients are leaving off the bells and whistles when designing second and third bathrooms,” says Frankel. “But they are choosing quality products. They

understand that if they buy durable, high quality products, it will be less expensive for them in the long run.” But showroom managers agree that there is

one luxury detail that appears to be popular for today’s bathrooms—the escutcheon, a protective plate that goes around shower trims and accessories.

For more ideas, tour all four of Grande Central Showrooms where you will see different displays unique to each destination.

New Yorkers have everything but space, and

after over twenty years of modular system

installations in Manhattan, techlineStudio’s

motto remains “furniture that fi ts,” says Gavin

Bromell, architect and company owner. “While

we are offering a wider range of material and

fi nish options than ever before, they are being

deployed in ever-smaller spaces.”

In addition to an expanding demand for

space-effi cient design strategies, Gavin is

seeing an increasing interest in environmentally

sound solutions. “Our newest line of cabinetry,

BREATH, is made from renewable bamboo

veneers on formaldehyde-free substrates. When

used with countertops of Paperstone, or quartz

with recycled content, these cabinets are both

beautiful and functional,” he adds.

Newer options from techlineStudio

include metal cabinet door frames by Elements

in six different profi les. Each profi le accepts a

wide range of insert materials, ranging from

textured glass to Lumicor and Parapan acrylics.

Another popular option techlineStudio offers

is high-gloss thermofoil fronts, which are a

very cost effective and environmentally kinder

alternative to high-gloss lacquer.

Who is the newest quartz kid on the block? That would be Quartz Master, a division of American Stone Collection. Prepare to be dazzled when you walk

through the doors of Quartz Master’s 225,000-square-foot showroom and warehouse, stocked with the most exquisite slabs of quartz in over 40 colors,

and all with the lowest prices in the industry.

Quartz Master’s products have several outstanding features. Slabs are made with more than 93-percent natural quartz—the hardest non-precious

stone—and bound together by resins. All 120-foot-by-64-foot slabs are usable, which eliminates clean cuts, creates less seaming, and offers more

fl exibility when it comes to design options. Since quartz is not prone to fl aws that occur with natural stone, Quartz Master’s slabs create a visually

consistent surface from end to end, and are easy to match for even the largest countertops. Compared to granite, quartz has superior resistance to heat,

stains, scratches, and mold and mildew. It does not need to be sealed, and it cleans easily with soap and water or a mild detergent.

Quartz Master can be used for a variety of applications, not just for countertops, vanities, and backsplashes. The material is nonporous, easy to clean,

sanitary, and maintenance free, making it ideal for toilet partitions, desktops, tub and shower surrounds, restaurant tables, bar and service areas, and even

fi replace surrounds and mantels. Quartz Master’s products have a lifetime warranty.

Since launching his full-service interior design fi rm in 1993, Bruce

Norman Long has honed his personal design philosophy. “A successful,

professionally decorated home will look as if someone hasn’t been there,

but of course I have,” Long says about his well-known reputation for

sidestepping fads in favor of timeless design. “Nothing dates a house

like a trend-inspired kitchen or bathroom.”

From family-style kitchens for period homes to streamlined spaces

for contemporary urban apartments, Long’s designs can be found from

Manhattan to abroad. Long says that

kitchen design has evolved over time from

the once popular glazed cabinetry fi nishes

to that of solid paint colors such as warm

putty or black. He also sees a return to

simplicity. “Clients don’t want their kitchens

to look like libraries anymore,” Long says,

adding that he notices clients requesting

more solid-wood kitchens, such as maple

or oak. Clients are also more receptive to

engineered stone, as well as soapstone, for countertops and islands. Those

who want granite now prefer the matte look—and Long recently specifi ed

a leathered granite top treatment for an ocean-front home.

For bathrooms, Long rarely deviates from white, beige, or gray.

“Fixtures and tile should never go out of style, but you can always add

personality to a bath with paint and accessories,” he says. But, trends do

have a place in powder rooms, Long adds. “That’s where I throw caution

to the wind.”
