A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MINISTER

‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in

all you do, and he will show you which path to take.’ Proverbs 3:5-6

Dear Friends,

I hope you have been enjoying the full and exciting sporty summer we have been having. Starting with the Football World Cup in Brazil, Wimbledon

where we cheered Andy on (but sadly this was not to be his year), and then came the ‘Tour de France’

or ‘Tour de Yorkshire’ as it was nicknamed and finally the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, there was something for everyone.

But now we draw breath and prepare for one of the biggest decisions we as Scots will make in modern history. September 18th looms as an historic day for Scotland.

After a little more than 300 years since the Acts of Union in 1707, we will vote on whether to become an independent nation or remain part of the United Kingdom.

In the year leading up to the Union of 1707, there was a call to pray and fast for the Queen (Queen Anne) and the two Governments in Edinburgh and London as they

conducted negotiations on the details, with the following statement in mind, “That

all may be done to the glory of God….”

300 years ago the Church gave spiritual leadership, without taking sides. Today there is the same, if not greater, need for the church in Scotland to give such leadership again. While the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ campaigns focus on the political,

economic, social, educational and cultural issues, which are of course essential to the debate, as Christians we also care about Scotland’s moral and spiritual climate.

We believe that God is the ultimate authority and we have a biblical responsibility to pray for our union and its leaders at this crucial time.

I am asking you therefore to join the many who are

praying about the Referendum and Scotland’s future. What kind of nation do we wish Scotland to be? History shows us over and over again that prayer changes things

and that God responds to the prayers of His people.

Prayer is already taking place - in home groups, in prayer gatherings and in the homes of our members, but I would like to invite you to a special prayer service on Sunday

14th September at 6.30pm in the church and also to participate in a national day of fasting and prayer on Wednesday 17th September when the church will be

open between 8am - 9pm for people to come in and pray, culminating in a closing time of worship. Those that

wish to can fast for some or all of the day as we pray. Whatever the outcome of the 18th September, we will

meet the challenge with grace toward one another and continue to try to be a faithful witness in our community.

May God guide us in the decisions we make and may it be done for his glory.

The Lord bless you all

Maggie

DORCAS LUNCHES - Lunches resume on Tuesday 23rd September. Come along

and enjoy a nice lunch – and why not bring your friends? Lunches are served 12 – 2 pm

in the Church Centre. You are sure to enjoy our home cooking and baking. Kirky

Krafters also sell their handmade greetings cards in the hall. Looking forward to

welcoming everyone back – both regulars and new faces.

OUR SCRIPTURE UNION HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE - Thank you so much for praying, providing home baking and in one case, letting your daughter come and look after our children (thank you, Steins). What an amazing week it was. Firstly the

weather was amazing - we had one of the heat wave weeks with only a small morning of rain and that was on the day we went swimming, so we were all going to

get wet anyhow! Secondly, we saw God at work in the lives of the campers, the team and even in each other as leaders.

We were incredibly busy - each person had applied to come to a holiday that would give them the chance to experience Go Karting, Raft building, Kayaking, Tree Climbing, Biking, Archery, Adventure Golf, Inflatable Slide, Bungee Run, Table

Tennis, Basketball, Football, Crafts, Swimming, Bungee Trampolines and much more. So the activities programme was pretty busy but we still had time to squeeze

in a murder mystery, a girly night in for the girls, some manly games for the boys, a night of camping out with toasted marshmallows, campfire and songs, a mini disco and a talent show. You may be wondering what more there could be time for, but as

well as all that, ran the “Fit for a King” teaching programme for the young people, exploring what relevance Jesus the King has for our lives today and letting them consider taking on the challenge to travel the amazing adventure it is to follow him.

We were so blessed to have an SU holiday where 20 of the 33 campers had made

the decision to follow Jesus and, therefore, a good deal of time was spent praying and talking about their experiences in their own churches and schools. Many of the campers came from churches who didn’t have many young people in that age group

and, therefore, this was a great chance to make close friends with others. Please continue to pray for these campers as they go back to school and live out

their faith. If you have ever wondered what difference an SU group makes in a school or an SU holiday can have, please hear me when I say the world of difference to some. It is the recharge that many need to get back up and on with witnessing in

an increasingly difficult environment.

James and I are not sure if we will be asked to lead next year or even if it will be possible, but, we were immensely privileged to be there this year. If you would like to get involved with SU holidays and experience this first hand please speak to me -

there are lots of opportunities to volunteer from driving minibuses to cooking and everything in between.

My final sign off has to go to Emilie-Jane who came with us and looked after Evie and Jack for us. She was fantastic and I was delighted to have such great company

for them and for me. Evie and Jack had a great time, loved all the attention and Evie is still singing (at some volume) the songs – we are very grateful to God for his good provision. Helen Hogg

KIRKLISTON HEALING ROOM - The Healing Room in Kirkliston is now open again after the summer break. We offer prayer for healing of any condition - physical, emotional or spiritual - in a relaxed and confidential atmosphere. We are

open every Thursday from 1130 am - 1 pm in the Church Centre, The Square, Kirkliston. No appointment is necessary. Please contact Katie Marshall on 07768

530 800 for further information. Katie Marshall

FABRIC REPORT - The project to re-slate the Church Centre roof continues. What seemed to be a simple project has turned out to be more complicated than I had thought at the beginning. Because it is a Listed Building, possibly two sets of

building consent are needed, depending on whether we use Welsh (existing slate) or Spanish slate. As the re-slating is probably going to take more than 30 days, a

Health and Safety person has to undertake a thorough check before, during and at the end of the task. The Architect is registered to do this so he has been given the job of getting the 3 or 4 estimates required and also finding out about what planning

consent is needed. By the time you read this report, I hope to have the estimates so that the Fabric Committee can pick one to carry out the job.

Inside the Church Centre, various members of the Fabric Committee have spent a couple of mornings painting the woodwork and the walls in the crush area of the

Church Centre. I did not realise that there was so much skirting boards and wood work round the doors until we started painting! Charles R Wright (Fabric Convenor)

TANZANIAN ADVENTURE – The Flannigans have returned safe and sound from our recent trip to Tanzania. Grateful thanks to all those who prayed for us

during our trip and to those who donated money or items – everything that we took out with us was gratefully received and put to good use. Our adventure was eye opening and challenging but we hope that we provided help to the children and staff

of KYGN, the school where we volunteered. Some of our activities included teaching, painting, playing, patching up cuts and grazes, doing height and weight

checks and above all having fun! It has whetted our appetites to go again, and some of our young ones are already planning their next trip! Thank you again! Mhairi and the Flannigan family

MUMS – why did God make mothers??? (Answers given by primary 2 schoolchildren)

She’s the only one who knows where the sellotape is.

Mostly to clean the house!

To help us out when we’re getting born. Why did God give you your mum and not some other person’s mum?

We’re related.

God knew my mum liked me more than other people’s mums liked me.

BILL ROY - A TRIBUTE ‘Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided to give in his

heart.’ 2 Cor 9:6

Bill Roy MBE, a member of Kirkliston Parish Church was a fascinating and accomplished individual who passed away in June 2012 aged 97. Bill was a leading light in the Watsonian and Corstorphine Curling Clubs for a very long time and was

Chairman of the Edinburgh Ice Rink (i.e. Haymarket) for some time. He was the Chairman and Managing Director of Millars Confectionery factory (famous for Pan Drops – “Millars Perfect Peppermints”) situated in Ratcliffe Terrace, Edinburgh. He

was a keen and very good curler and a member of many clubs including Holyrood and Edinburgh Rotary as well as Watsonians, Corstorphine and the Vets. Bill

received the MBE for services to the Confectionery Industry. There is so much more we could say about Bill, I only knew him for a short time,

and enjoyed visiting him along with his elder, in his home at Ravelston Heights. Age did not diminish his sharp and enquiring mind, Bill always had several newspapers opened in front of him at any given time; he liked to keep abreast of

current affairs and he was genuinely interested in knowing everything that was happening in the church - how were we moving forward, what was our vision and

how could he support that vision? Bill was generous in his giving during his lifetime, he believed wholeheartedly in the future of the church and he remembered the church in his passing leaving a substantial legacy to be sown wisely into the

mission of God to further enable us to be a faithful witness in our community in reaching people with the gospel.

We would like to acknowledge this gift and give thanks to God for the life of Bill Roy a faithful and obedient servant of Christ. Rev Maggie Lane (Moderator of the Kirk Session)

c.a.b. - We are still seeing good numbers of children on Friday nights and we feel

that our work is appreciated by the kids who come to join us. This summer we have seen some of our c.a.b. kids at the holiday club and we were very happy to see them there sharing in the fun and great teaching on offer. The c.a.b. team has had a break

over August but will be back on the 5th September. Please remember us in your prayers – there is always room for more volunteers! Many thanks to the cab team for its time and commitment. Christina Pearson

COPPER COLLECTION - This quarter I have sent £50 to “Fresh Start” to buy paint to transform stained and dirty walls into a bright new home. Thanks to all who save their coppers and 5p pieces. Muriel Naylor

LITTLE COFFEE STOP – A NEW TERM, A NEW OPPORTUNITY [AND

SOME NEW TEAM MEMBERS PLEASE]

I write this as we are about to restart after the summer. We are looking forward to seeing some familiar faces, some new babies and parents and some folks who are

back with wee one number 2 or 3, and not forgetting some grandparents who are truly great. We will have the well-acclaimed Bacon Rolls, Veggie Sausages, Lattés, Cakes, loads of toys to choose from and this time we are going to try and offer a

new room! The new room will be for older preschool children who need a little more structure to their morning. We hope to offer parachute games, baking, painting and lots of fun and games. We have listened to the feedback from parents and we

realise that the pm nursery slot is for the 4 year olds so this means a lot of our parents have 4 year olds who are getting a bit too big for the Little Coffee Stop toys.

We are planning to offer a sign up session for these older ‘wee’ ones so that mums/grans/aunts etc can enjoy 30 minutes of free cuppa time. We will be looking for one of the parents to help at each session alongside one of the Little Coffee Stop

leaders. What’s that saying, “If you want something done, ask a busy person?” Well this

could be a strapline for the Little Coffee Stop (and indeed many groups at church). We have a team of very busy people who serve it diligently, and we need a few

more. I’d like to offer you a place as part of a dynamic team full of laughter and enthusiasm, serving families in our community. Maybe you could help in the kitchen, take orders, set up furniture, clean toys or play with some of the little ones.

It’s a great way of putting into practice the challenge that Jesus gave us to make disciples. I don’t always find it easy to engage with people in conversation, but here is a practical way to serve that often leads to discussion or an opportunity to pray for

someone. If you are reading this and thinking I could maybe do that, then please pop in and see us on a Friday morning (we won’t bite and we promise not to pressgang you into signing up on the spot) - we will simply invite you to see the group and tell

us what you would like to offer to the team. The Little Coffee Stop Team

A PRAYER FOR OUR CHURCH

Enable this church to do your will.

Make it vulnerable that it may speak with calm humility; Make it outward looking that it may care deeply; Make it a community of peacemakers and bridge builders;

In the midst of turbulence let the church make space for the hearing of your still small voice. Delia (a member of St. Mark's Church)

MEN’S GROUP - By the time you read this the Men’s Group will have notched up another fun get-together. This time, the outing was a trip to Falkirk to check out the amazing Kelpies and to cycle round one of the many cycling tracks. Although we

were small in numbers I think I can safely say we will have enjoyed our trip out. We still have a couple of activities planned for this year - Go Karting at Newbridge

(20th September) and Curling (18th November). Don’t worry if you are not an adrenalin-junkie - we also meet up for breakfast and chat in the church centre and this usually takes place the month before the activity.

If anyone would like to join us you will be made very welcome, I can assure you that our bacon & sausage rolls go down a treat & our activities are most enjoyable.

Hopefully I have inspired a few of you men folk to come along to join our merry band of thrill seekers. If this is the case please feel free to contact either myself,

Drew Kuzma or Dan Pearson. Failing that if you are in church on a Sunday, drop by the Techie Desk at the rear of the church and have a word with us as most of the team are members of the Men’s Group. We look forward to welcoming you all.

David Wynne A DATE FOR YOUR DIARIES – It has just been announced that a fundraising

concert will be held in aid of Queensferry Churches Care in the Community (QCCC). Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain will be supported by Queensferry High

School Music Department on Thursday 27th November in Queensferry High School. Watch out for further details in due course.

SUNDAY CLUB - We hope that everyone has had a fabulous summer in the

glorious sunshine. This term we are going to dispense with formal teaching material and instead are going to select our own topics as we travel “Through the Alphabet”. This will allow us to have a complete free rein and should give a great mix of

teaching. After the October break, we will be turning our minds to the Nativity and will also be planning a Christmas Outing for the children.

We hope to have a fundraising soup and sandwich lunch after the church service this term in order to raise funds to buy a laptop computer for Sunday Club. We feel that

this technology would be a very useful teaching aid and would allow us to watch video clips and have more interactive teaching and access to a wider range of modern resources. Watch out for the intimations once we have set a date! Please

continue to pray for the children in our Sunday Club and indeed for all children in the Parish. Pray that their lives will be touches by our loving God and that they will come to know Him and let Him play a huge part in their lives. Thanks again to all

who help us in any way – your input is very much appreciated. As always, if you would like to join the team, become an occasional helper or come and talk to the

children about an experience, hobby or interest, please do get in touch with any of us. Morag, Liz, Jane, Moira, Ella and Kirsteen

THE GUILD - The new session of the Guild opens on Wednesday 24th September

at 7.30pm in the Church Centre, when we will welcome Rev. David Black to speak on our theme “A World to Serve”. The two Projects we will be supporting this year will be Mary’s Meals – Making a Difference in Liberia and Priority Area - Passage

from India: Scotland. As per usual we have a varied programme consisting of a mix of serious topics and the more light-hearted.

We look forward to welcoming back the Guild members and also anyone who has not come along before – remember Gents, that includes you - but would like to give the Guild a try. Please do come. You will find us a friendly group, indeed our own

Kirkliston motto is “Friendship, Fellowship and Fun”, and believe me, we do enjoy fun!

There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family bible to her brother

in another part of the country.

"Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk.

"Only the Ten Commandments," answered the lady.

Fresh Start is an Edinburgh based charity that helps people who have

been homeless get established in their new home. To do this we rely on the generosity of our supporters, including more than 100

churches in Edinburgh. There are many ways in which you can

support Fresh Start, some of which are outlined below.

Donating - We are always on the lookout for donations of goods for

people moving in to their new home. For example at the moment we

are particularly in need of plates, glass tumblers (no stemmed glasses

please), bed linen and curtains.

Volunteering - Fresh Start has a large team of volunteers and is often in need of more people to volunteer their time and talents. At the

moment we are particularly looking for some people with availability

on Monday mornings to volunteer with our linen team weekly or bi-

weekly. If you are interested and can make a commitment of at least 12 months then please get in touch.

Harvest and general collections - If your congregation would like to

support Fresh Start specifically with the upcoming Harvest, or with

another general collection of goods, we are able to provide churches with posters of items we need and more information.

If you would like more information, regular newsletters or somebody

from Fresh Start to provide a talk for a congregation or group, please

NEWS FROM THE YOUTH CORNER Well it is hard to believe that the summer has come and gone already! Kids are

back to school or soon to be. Before too long the autumn routine falls into place, but hopefully not before an Indian Summer.

So what news then of all things youth…

Holiday Club - Fit for a King was the holiday club of choice this year running alongside the Commonwealth Games sporting theme and focusing on the life of Jesus. We had a lively group of kids this year and a huge thank you to all the

volunteers who gave of their time and talents to minister to the 20+ children who attended. The children were absolute stars and the team had a ball throughout the

week and during the family service. YAKK - Yakk will fire up again from the 31 August. We will be running a slightly

different format this year with a Junior group (P5-P7) and Senior group (S1-S6). So keep an ear out for the intimations and eye out for the Facebook page for details and timings of the two groups.

Youth Room - The budget and plans for the room have been submitted to the

Finance committee. We will hear in due course as to the outcome, and then can move ahead accordingly. Thanks to all for the ideas and input thus far.

Some Food for Thought …

The Bible encourages us to ‘go and make disciples’ (Matthew 28.19) and we know

this to be The Great Commission. I have heard some say that many of the issues the church is currently experiencing is directly due to the lack of this taking place in our churches. We have all been tasked with this challenge but we also can read another

passage which states ‘a student cannot be above their teacher’ (Matthew 10.24). In order to make disciples one must first be a disciple. We see the work of apprentices

round about us … stone masons, carpenters, hairdressers, printers, electricians etc. Ironically we do not often see it to the same degree and effectiveness within our congregations. It is with this in mind that I have chosen to go with the theme of

“investing” this year. Every one of us should have someone investing in us and we, likewise should be investing in another. So take a moment to ponder what kind of an investment you would like to be? What investing do you need done in you and

in whom can you invest?
