GENERAL INFORMATION.

LOCATION.

La Grange is in Lenoir County, N. C, on the A. & N. C.

R. R., 14 miles from Goldsboro. It is known throughout

the country as the town of schools and churches. It is of

easy access by rail and telegraph from all parts of the coun-

try. Location is healthy, climate fine, educational advan-

tages good, and cost small.

CHARACTER OF SCHOOL.

The Kinsey Seminary is a female boarding school. Theobject in founding it was to make it a preparatory school in

all respects equal to the best of its kind in the country. It

is maintained as a private enterprise. Every effort will be

used to make it thorough in the character of its work. Nonebut competent teachers are employed, therefore, the very

best work is done by them. We give girls a thorough prep-

aration for the higher classes of colleges, or fit them for

successful work as teachers.

The Kinsey Seminary is the only Female Boarding School

in Eastern North Carolina in which girls are required to

wear the prescribed uniform of the School.

The School is strictly non-sectarian. Our patrons are

representatives of almost all the religious denominations and

our teachers are selected on the ground of competency

regardless of church relations, though, other things being

equal, we try to have as many denominations of protestant

Christians represented as we can.

Page 13: Kinsey Seminary Catalog - ancestraltrackers.netancestraltrackers.net/nc/lenoir/kinsey-seminary-catalogue-1888.pdf · CATALOGUE OF KinseySeminary ABoardingSchool FOR GIRLSANDYOUNGLADIES,

KINSEY SEMINARY.

DESIGN OF THE SCHOOL.

It is the design of the Principal to meet a recognized want

in some places, and one fast gaining ground in others, of a

school in which young ladies are taught subjects, not books.

It will be his constant aim to teach them in such a way that

when they leave the Kinsev Seminary, they will know some

things well. If they desire to attend college, they will be

prepared when they go to enter college classes. It is in-

tended to employ and retain only those teachers, who knowthe difference between theory and practice, teaching and

hearing a recitation.

ADVANTAGES.

Parents cannot over-estimate the advantage of boarding

pupils in the School. They receive constant attention, are

not interrupted in their work, are under restraint of regu-

lations conducive to good habits, and receive instruction in

many things not offered to day pupils. Their improvement

in mind and manners is so much greater that the Principal

reserves the right to refuse to receive those from a dis-

tance as day scholars whose reasons for boarding in townare not satisfactory to him.

UNIFORM.

After three years experience we have found the plan of

uniforming the girls perfectly satisfactory to the students

and patrons, and it has elicited the admiration of the public.

,It obviates the difficulty of invidious distinction in dress, it

1 saves expense, it saves time, it saves thought and reserves it

for other and higher uses. The uniforms are made of gray,

\woolen goods and we will have a dress-maker here for that

purpose as well as to teach all young ladies who wish to

Page 14: Kinsey Seminary Catalog - ancestraltrackers.netancestraltrackers.net/nc/lenoir/kinsey-seminary-catalogue-1888.pdf · CATALOGUE OF KinseySeminary ABoardingSchool FOR GIRLSANDYOUNGLADIES,

KINSEY SEMINARY.

know it, how to cut and fit a dress by measure. In prepar-

ing a young lady's wardrobe for Kinsey Seminary, it will

not be necessary to furnish an extra dress to be worn on

special occasions. The uniform supplies this need and is

worn wheneYer the pupil leaYes the school for church or in

any school capacity- In leaYinghome all that will be needed

in the way of wearing apparel, will be a supply of good,

neat clothing for every day use in the school-rooms. Im-

mediately after arrival each girl must provide herself with

uniform and hat, both of which we furnish at actual cost.

In addition to the above uniform, we require each girl to

have a plain, white dress to be worn during the closing ex-

ercises. To avoid all unnecessary expense and trouble to

parents in getting dresses fitted, made and sent to their

daughters, as well as to insure uniformity in these white

dresses, we will have the goods on hand and have them

made here.

DISCIPLINE.

The discipline is parental but firm. We employ none but

female teachers, who by the advice of the Principal and

Ladv Principal, maintain authority and enforce all needful

requirements. In the management of obstinate pupils ap-

peals are made to their reason, their affection and lady-like

sense of propriety. Boarders are considered members of

the family, treated as ladies and are expected to act as such.

Pupils committed to our care will be watched over and at-

tended in health or in sickness, in school or out of school,

with the same careful solicitude bestowed upon our owndaughters. We use discipline as a means to an end. Ourrules are few and simple, such as experience has shownnecessary to make instruction thorough and develop the

mind and character of our pupils.

ADMISSION OF PUPILS.

Pupils will be received at any time during the session and

will be charged at regular specified rates from date of en-

trance. It is very essential to the progress of pupils that

they be present promptly on the day of opening. No one

will be received for a shorter period than the entire session,

or the remaining portion thereof at the time of entrance.

Precaution will be used to prevent the admission of any one

whose example and influence might prove injurious to oth-

ers. No pupil who is found to exert an evil influence in the

school, who derives no benefit herself and whose example

is injurious, will be retained.

PRIMARY DEPARTMENT.

This department is conducted by a thoroughly competent

teacher in a separate room, which has been fitted up with

desks of the latest and most improved pattern. Maps and

charts necessary for the illustration of the various subjects

taught are always at the teacher's command. Girls from 8

to 12 years committed to our charge will be thoroughly pre-

pared in this department for admission into the

ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT.

The course of study in this department embraces English,

Mathematics, Latin, French and German. Instruction in all

branches is thorough, fitting young ladies to enter any col-

lege they may wish to attend. The Principal exercises a

general supervision over the school. His personal attention

is given to Mathematics. Special stress is given to the ad-

vantage a Latin scholar has to the better understanding of

English ; and Bingham's Grammar is used to give a thorough

acquaintance with analysis and parsing.

PENMANSHIP.

In order that every girl who attends the Kinsey Seminary

may be able to write a good hand, a certain part of each day

is devoted to practice in writing under the supervision of a

good teacher. Those who enter our Primary Department

have a good opportunity to learn to write as it is taught sys-

tematically.

STUDY AND RECITATIONS.

When not on recitation during school hours, girls do not

study in their rooms but in the chapel under the supervision

of a teacher. At night, they are required to spend two

hours in preparing their lessons for next day, which they do

in the chapel, one of the teachers being present to render

assistance and keep order.

RELIGIOUS PRIVILEGES.

A portion of the sacred scriptures is read before the whole

school every morning accompanied with singing and appro-

priate devotion. The school also enjoys the opportunity of

attending religious exercises of the different denominations

every Sunday. Whenever the girls attend services, they

are accompanied by a teacher.

BUILDINGS.

Our new school building is a handsome, two-story struct-

ure, built in connection with the Principal's residence, con-

taining on first floor chapel, recitation rooms, dining roomand Principal's office. On second floor, are bed-rooms for

pupils and teachers. Rooms are spacious and properly

ventilated. Only two girls occupy one room. The Domes-

tic and Scholastic Departments are under the same roof, so

there is no necessity for any exposure in inclement weather.

WHAT GIRLS FURNISH.

Each pupil should bring from home the following : Onepair blankets or comforts, one pair sheets, one bed-spread,

one pillow and two pillow-cases, towels and napkins, comband brush.

All clothing, sheets, pillow-cases, towels and napkins

should be plainly marked with full name of pupil. We will

not be responsible for clothing not thus marked.

ENTRANCE AND DEDUCTION.

Prompt entrance at beginning of session is earnestly de-

sired. The delay of a few weeks causes embarrassment to a

pupil entering a class somewhat advanced. No deduction

is made after the pupil is entered except at the option of

the Principal. Those who leave school before the close of

the term will be charged for board and tuition for whole

session unless the pupil is compelled to leave on account of

sickness.

for when pupil enters, cost of which is twelve dollars.

Parties unknown to us, wishing 30 or 60 days indulgence,

must furnish satisfactory reference. Our terms are very

low. No calculations are made for any losses.

DRAWING AND PAINTING.

The Art Department under the management of Miss

Florence M. Farnham, B. P., of Syracuse University, has

been during the past scholastic year in the highest degree

satisfactory. The fact of the judges of the Art Department

at the New Berne Exposition having awrarded the teacher

of Art a premium for the best Oil Painting, and also one of

the pupils for Crayon Drawing, is very gratifying to both

teachers and pupils. Miss Farnham uses the method recog-

nized as best, and taught in the best schools. She teaches

drawing from casts and nature as well as the principles of

perspective. Drawing is taught in pencil, charcoal and

crayon, and painting in oil and water colors. Our Studio is

furnished with a collection of casts and busts which Art

students use free of charge.

EXAMINATIONS.

These are made at end of each month and are both writ-

ten and oral. They are compulsory as to whole class and

are as important as the recitations in determining a pupil's

standing in her studies. The result of these examinations

will be posted in chapel monthly and kept on our record

book for reference and examination by parents and guar-

dians.

A LITERARY SOCIETY

has been organized by the pupils for their mutual improve-

ment, and meetings are held every Friday evening in a hall

set apart for that purpose. Recognizing in this society a

potent factor for good, we advise all pupils to join it.

VISITING AND CORRESPONDENCE.

As absence from school interferes with the welfare and

progress of the pupils, the visiting of homes or friends un-

der ordinary circumstances cannot be allowed. In granting

leave of absence, the Principal will be governed by general

rules impartially applied to all. It is not our desire to ex-

clude young ladies from all social intercourse, but exper-

ience has taught us that they cannot go into general society

and attend to their studies at the same time. Visitors com-

ing from the homes of the pupils and wishing to call on

them must present letters of introduction from parents or

guardians. Parents committing their daughters to our

charge are respectfully asked to consider the above and

also the following :

Young ladies, while boarding in the school, will not be

allowed to attend places of amusement, except in charge of

Page 20: Kinsey Seminary Catalog - ancestraltrackers.netancestraltrackers.net/nc/lenoir/kinsey-seminary-catalogue-1888.pdf · CATALOGUE OF KinseySeminary ABoardingSchool FOR GIRLSANDYOUNGLADIES,

teachers, or to spend the night out of the school. No per-

mission, written or otherwise, can annul this regulation, and

parents are particularly requested not to embarrass us by

sending such permission.

Correspondence with the home circle is freely encouraged,

but not boyond this.

SPECIAL INFORMATION.

A deposit for books and stationery must be made whenpupils enter as the Principal cannot advance money for

them.

All communications for the Principal must be direct, and

not by messages throngh the pupils.

Pupils are required to retire by 10 P. M., at which time

lights are extinguished. They are also required to put their

beds in order at an early hour, after which servants enter

the rooms and do all necessary cleaning. Daily inspection

of the private rooms is made and the occupants are expected

to keep them at all times neat. Violation of this regulation

subjects the offender to demerits Calls made by friends

or relatives must be announced to the Principal, or LadyPrincipal and formal permission is required before the call

can be received. In no case will pupils be allowed to re-

ceive visitors in their private rooms without permission.

Borrowing of text books, money, clothing, jewelry and other

articles is positively forbidden. Unnecessary expenditure

of money will not be countenanced. Purchasing on credit

is forbidden. Punctuality is required.

DIRECTIONS FOR REMITTING.

Send money by Draft, Check, Registered Letter or P. O.

order. Post-office orders should be made payable to Joseph

Kinsey, Principal.

GENERAL REMARKS.

The Kinsey Seminary is owned and managed bY the

Principal. Its patrons are, therefore, informed that the

greatest care is used in selecting competent teachers. Theobject in teaching is thoroughness. Latin is taught so as to

acquaint the students with forms and principles, and at the

same time make them ready and exact in translation. In

teaching Mathematics it is intended to combine practical

knowledge with mental discipline. Little value is attachedto mere mechanical work ; but, at every step of the student's

progress logical analvsis and demonstration are required.

The student is expected to step behind the rule and becomea rule-maker. No one is allowed to drag along in the class,

but must do the work assigned to the class. Those who la-

bor faithfully, but acquire with difficulty, are not discour-

aged ; they are either transferred to classes where the workis suitad to their powers, or persuaded to go over the ground, once traversed, a second time. Judicious assistance is givento the pupil at e\-ery step, especiallv to such as need morehelp than others. Parents and guardians are earnestlv so-

licited not to consent to the absence of pupils from the

school during the term, either for visiting at home or else-

where, as it interferes materially with the progress of their

studies.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

Joseph Kinsey, one of the best ti achers in the State, is now Principal of aniost excellent school for young ladies in LaGrange. He has recently

erected a large and commodious building for his school, and has five accom-plished lady assistants. Mr, Kinsey, soon after leaving Trinity, chose theprofession of teaching which he has been following for nearly twenty years.

LaGrange is indebted to him for the first impulse given to education.—Trinity Archive.

Prof. Joseph Kinsey, Principal of the only strictly Female School in the

East, and a wonderfully successful teacher, honored our sanctum with a call

Friday. His school at La Grange is rapidiy gaining prestige as a school for

girls and young ladies.—Washington Gazette.

The closing exercises of Kinsey School at LaGrange are given in this

issue. This is one of the best Female Schools in the South, one that East-

ern North Caroiina should be proud of.—New Berne Journal.

TESTIMONIALS.

The Principal refers to his numerous friends who have given him a lib-

eral patronage since 1805, and offers his successful experience as his onlyguarantee of success in the future. He also presents Ihe following testi-

monials, based on the merits of pupils whom he sent to the Universitywhile teaching boys :

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, December 1th, 1881.

We take pleasure in testifying to the character of the students that Mr.Kinsey has sent to the University. They show that they have been in-

structed with very great care. They show also that they have formed ex-

cellent habits, so that within the class-room, and without, their conduct is

exemplary. Kemp P. Battle, President of University ofN. «'.

R. H, Graves, Professor of Mathematics.Geo. T. Winston, Professor of Latin.

(From Mr. E. J. Hays, Madison County, Fla.)

I take pleasure in recommending the Kinsey School to the friends of ed-

ucation. Three of my daughters have been studenis at this institution dur-

ing the past year, and 1 am so well pleased with their progress that I sha-1

continue them. E. J. Hays.
