As is oſten the case at the start of any new year, there have been a number of changes here at school which your child may have menoned to you: Our smileyssystem has now been replaced with House Points”. Children will sll receive individual points for demonstrang a good atude or compleng work to a high standard (for example) and these will be recorded on individual pupil charts within each classroom with a cumulave total for each house. The House with the highest number of points each week will receive the House Cupfor that week (to be presented in Fridays Sharing Assembly). Individual pupils with the highest number of House points over a term will connue to receive cerficates in sharing assembly. Individual pupil of the weekawards for each class will connue to be presented in Fridays sharing assembly. Whole school Golden Timewill no longer take place on a Friday aſternoon. Instead, each class will work collaboravely in order to be awarded a treat meeach week – this will vary from class to class and will not necessarily take place on a Friday. Misdemeanours will no longer result in a loss of Golden Timebut will instead receive a loss of the following playme or lunchme break (in 5 minute increments) – this will make a more immediate connecon between the misdemeanour and its consequence. As has always been the case in our behaviour policy, pupils will receive two warnings prior to a 5 minute sancon being applied. If the misdemeanour occurs during break or lunchmes, the sancon will be 5 minutes standing with a supervising adult. These changes will bring Kinnerley in line with other schools in the Westcliffe Federaon and reflect the Federaon behaviour policy (available on our school website). Another new iniave which we have begun this term is to start each day with 15 minutes of movement meout on the playground. This is based on the Daily Mileconcept which you may have read about in the press. The Daily Mileis a social physical acvity, with children running or jogging – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes. As this is something new for us, we are not insisng that children run or jog throughout, but they are expected to keep moving at least at a brisk walk for the duraon of the acvity. We have already found that many children are holding a run or jog for the full 15 minutes and looking to improve on their previous days record”. We are finding that for some children the 15 minutes gives them an addional opportunity to wake upand for others it is an opportunity to burn off a lile excess energy prior to the start of the more formal school day, in addion to the obvious benefits which physical acvity, fresh air and the opportunity to chat with friends brings. We will be connuing throughout the year (unless the weather is exceponally poor) so pupils will need to ensure that they have an appropriate coat, hat, scarf etc with them as the weather gets colder this term. We have had a number of building projects carried out over the summer to improve the fabric of the school and I hope that you agree that our new windows and doors look very smart (as well as greatly improving the energy efficiency of the building). In response to the development points raised from our last Ofsted inspecon (and developed in conjuncon with the Shropshire Early Years School Improvement Service) our Early Years space has been greatly enhanced by the removal of the wall between the old Class 1 and Class 2”. This much more open space has enabled the connuous provision requirements of the Early Years curriculum to be met more effecvely by Mrs Astley and her team. We have many excing plans for this term in store – watch this space! Ms. Marilyn Hunt Headteacher We welcome any approach from volunteer parents who may feel that they can spare the time to run an after school club (sports related or otherwise). Please dont hesitate to call in and see us for a chat if this is the case. Thank You

School Clubs

Week Beginning 10th Sept 2018 Monday Football Club for Snowy & LEO’s pupils 12.30 - 1.00 p.m. (Jonny Hughes Coaching)

Wednesday 1. Choir Practice 12.30 - 1.00 p.m. (Mrs. Astley) 2. Sports Club for Snowy & LEO’s pupils 3.30 - 4.15 p.m. (Jonny Hughes Coaching)

Thursday 1. Needlecraft for Years 3, 4 , 5 & 6 12.30 - 1.00 p.m. (Mrs. Buxton)

Welcome back to a new school year! I hope that you all had a very enjoyable summer break. As is often the case at the start of any new year, there have been a number of changes here at school which your child may have mentioned to you:

Our “smileys” system has now been replaced with “House Points”. Children will still receive individual points for demonstrating a good attitude or completing work to a high standard (for example) and these will be recorded on individual pupil charts within each classroom with a cumulative total for each house. The House with the highest number of points each week will receive the “House Cup” for that week (to be presented in Friday’s Sharing Assembly). Individual pupils with the highest number of House points over a term will continue to receive certificates in sharing assembly.

Individual “pupil of the week” awards for each class will continue to be presented in Friday’s sharing assembly.

Whole school “Golden Time” will no longer take place on a Friday afternoon. Instead, each class will work collaboratively in order to be awarded a “treat time” each week – this will vary from class to class and will not necessarily take place on a Friday.

Misdemeanours will no longer result in a loss of “Golden Time” but will instead receive a loss of the following playtime or lunchtime break (in 5 minute increments) – this will make a more immediate connection between the misdemeanour and its consequence. As has always been the case in our behaviour policy, pupils will receive two warnings prior to a 5 minute sanction being applied. If the misdemeanour occurs during break or lunchtimes, the sanction will be 5 minutes standing with a supervising adult.

These changes will bring Kinnerley in line with other schools in the Westcliffe Federation and reflect the Federation behaviour policy (available on our school website). Another new initiative which we have begun this term is to start each day with 15 minutes of “movement time” out on the playground. This is based on the “Daily Mile” concept which you may have read about in the press. The “Daily Mile” is a social physical activity, with children running or jogging – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes. As this is something new for us, we are not insisting that children run or jog throughout, but they are expected to keep moving at least at a brisk walk for the duration of the activity. We have already found that many children are holding a run or jog for the full 15 minutes and looking to improve on their previous day’s “record”. We are finding that for some children the 15 minutes gives them an additional opportunity to “wake up” and for others it is an opportunity to burn off a little excess energy prior to the start of the more formal school day, in addition to the obvious benefits which physical activity, fresh air and the opportunity to chat with friends brings. We will be continuing throughout the year (unless the weather is exceptionally poor) so pupils will need to ensure that they have an appropriate coat, hat, scarf etc with them as the weather gets colder this term. We have had a number of building projects carried out over the summer to improve the fabric of the school and I hope that you agree that our new windows and doors look very smart (as well as greatly improving the energy efficiency of the building). In response to the development points raised from our last Ofsted inspection (and developed in conjunction with the Shropshire Early Years School Improvement Service) our Early Years space has been greatly enhanced by the removal of the wall between the “old Class 1 and Class 2”. This much more open space has enabled the continuous provision requirements of the Early Years curriculum to be met more effectively by Mrs Astley and her team. We have many exciting plans for this term in store – watch this space!

School Meals

The cost of a school meal has now increased to £2.40 per day or £12 per week with effect from 1st September 2018.

This increase is in line with other schools within our Federation and reflects the cost of supplies.

If payments for school meals are received in advance, on Monday of each week, then this of great help to us. Please remember to clearly label your child’s dinner money (preferably in a sealed envelope) and note on which days meals are required.

If your child should change their mind (and decide that they require a meal later in the week that has not been ordered) please inform your child’s class teacher or Mrs. Walsgrove by 8.55 a.m. and we can arrange this for you.

Cheques need to be made payable to Shropshire Council. Thank You

A vacancy has now arisen, for a parent governor to serve on the Westcliffe Governing Body.

Election procedures will be announced via the school newsletter next Friday (14.9.18) with details of dates and the procedure for making an application.

Please take some time, over the next week, to consider whether such a position would be of interest to you (please see Pages 14 & 15 for a helpful guide on the role of the parent governor).

P.E. Lessons

If all children could please have with them a tee-shirt plus shorts and some inexpensive pumps or trainers, this would be most helpful; thank you.

School P.E. Tee-shirts and P.E. bags are available to purchase from the school office; please see Mrs. Walsgrove.

Children should please have their P.E. kit in school all week.

Thank You

An explanatory letter for those pupils taking part, has been issued today; please return the consent slip as soon as possible. Thank You

Please remember that your child is entitled to a free school meal every day, under the fifth year of the Central Government initiative UIFSM (Universal Infant Free School Meals).

If your child has just moved up from Year Two to Year Three i.e. they have completed both their final year in Key Stage One plus their end of Key Stage Assessments (and are being taught by Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Madin) they will now need to pay £2.40 for each school meal ordered, please.

Separate Entitlement to Free School Meals

If you are in receipt of any of the following, your child may have an entitlement to free school meals:

Income Support

Income Based Job Seekers Allowance

Employment & Support Allowance

Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

The Guarantee Element of State Pension Credit

It is particularly important to register for free school meals if you qualify, even if your child receives a free meal through UIFSM as detailed above.

This is because all children registered as being eligible for free school meals attract additional funding for our school. For more advice and support on this issue, please call into the office.
