Dear Sisters in the League,
It is with great pleasure that I extend an invitation to each of you to attend the 97th Annual Convention
of the Kingston Diocesan Council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, to be held on
Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th, 2019 at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre,
Kingston.
Our new Mission Statement reads: “The Catholic Women’s League of Canada calls its members to
grow in faith and to witness to the love of God through ministry and service”. This statement invites us
to gather, celebrate, witness and act. Our convention provides us with the opportunity to celebrate
our faith and our actions over the past year. The weekend is also an opportunity to strengthen our
resolve to be witness to the love of God to those who need us.
We have invited Joe Gunn to be our keynote speaker on Saturday. Joe has been executive director
of Citizens for Public Justice and has just recently accepted a similar position with The Oblate
Fathers. He is author of the book “Journeys to Justice” Those of us who have heard Joe speak, are
excited about where his words and the will of the Holy Spirit will lead us.
As this is an election year, on Sunday morning we will prayerfully elect our new executive.
We are very grateful to our host council, St. Paul the Apostle, Kingston. There is so much work
involved and so many details that go into preparing a convention. Lyne and her committee are doing
it all! Expect to be greeted with a warm welcome and hospitality plus!
I sincerely hope you and other members of your council accept this invitation to join with your sisters
across the diocese to participate in a weekend that promises spiritual growth, inspiration and renewal.
I look forward to seeing you at the convention and pray that Our Lady of Good Counsel continues to
bless us in our endeavours for God and Canada.

THE CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF CANADA
St Paul the Apostle 1111 Taylor Kidd Blvd
Kingston ON K7M 8G8 Dear Sisters in the League, The members of The Catholic Women’s League at St Paul the Apostle parish in Kingston are delighted to host the 97 th Annual Convention of the Kingston Diocesan Council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada. You are all invited to join us for a weekend of spiritual growth, informative speakers and social time as we show support for one another in the important work of the League. Registration will take place in the Lisbon Room Friday, May 3rd in the evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, May 4th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Our Convention will begin with a Mass, concelebrated by Father Dale Wright and Father Sebastian Amato. The Mass will take place in the ballroom, beginning at 9:15 a.m. Starting after morning Mass on Saturday, the Lisbon Room will be converted to a Prayer Room: a place of quiet solitude and reflection. It will be available to you Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. then again Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. We hope you will find a few minutes to center yourselves in prayer in this location. Saturday evening will provide an opportunity to try out ‘Line Dancing’ with Eleanor Whalen followed by the music of Larry Raycroft accompanied by his daughters. Guaranteed fun for all! Please ensure that all registration directions contained in this package are respected and followed. The credential form is especially important as this is a Diocesan election year. Any questions may be directed to the individual named on the forms. All cheques should be made payable to “St Paul the Apostle CWL”. For your convenience, the registration, credentials, meal forms and both cheques can be mailed in the same envelope as they are all going to the same address. Please invite your Council’s Spiritual Advisor, and provide a banquet ticket for him. Without the support of our Spiritual Advisors we would not be able to carry out the important work of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Room reservations must be made by individual members. Information is found at the bottom of the Summary Meal Order and Payment Form. We are working hard to make your weekend a memorable one. We look forward to greeting you on May 4th. God bless,

PROVINCIAL AND DIOCESAN VOLUNTARY DONATIONS
PROVINCIAL VOLUNTARY FUND
• Bishop Bernard F. Pappin Memorial Bursary Fund
Bishop Pappin was the Provincial Spiritual Advisor and died suddenly while in office. The Provincial Executive
established this fund in his memory, and it is used annually to financially assist seminarians in Ontario.
DIOCESAN VOLUNTARY FUND
• HOPE Fund
This unique diocesan project was the inspiration of Theresa Mangan, and Lillian O’Connor with encouragement from
Father Boyle, then Diocesan Spiritual Advisor, with input from Carmel Foster. It was established as a project of love
and concern for our neighbour.
The Hope Fund has tended to give consideration to applications that relate to family or individual situations. However,
non-funded groups that are struggling to provide a better community environment are not necessarily prohibited from
receiving a ‘ray of hope.’
Parish councils are encouraged to make an annual donation to the Hope Fund and to submit the name of potential
recipients along with a brief summary of the reason for submitting the name(s). The application form should be
returned to the diocesan president as per the instructions on the bottom of the form.

Kenya Help
Kenya Help was founded in 2008 by Nancy Stevens. However, the seeds for its creation were sown during Nancy’s
first trip to Africa in 2005, working as a Habitat for Humanity volunteer. She then volunteered in several other African
countries before making Kenya her home away from home. The knowledge Nancy gained working on these various
projects created a vision of “doing things differently” to continue her mission of changing the lives of others in Africa.
Working with the community leaders and elders has been her focus; to work together for the same goals. Kenya Help
encourages self-sustainability, builds schools, and provides food and clean drinking water.
Their mission is to make positive change for the children of Ngong, Kenya. They work to enhance the education of
students by providing full classrooms, food and clean water. They provide the tools in order for the communities to
become more self-sustainable and be able to lift themselves from poverty. Education is empowering the children and
communities and gives them the courage to better their lives. Their vision is to see the next generation of leaders
grow physically strong, spiritually generous, technically knowledgeable and ready to change the work.

Coady International Institute – of St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S., was founded by Dr. Moses Coady who gave leadership to the Antigonish Movement which promotes the ideal that by learning and working together, men and women become “masters of their own destinies.” Coady offers a six month diploma program designed for leaders engaged in the development of people-based organizations in developing countries. The students, ranging in age from 25 to 45, are persons employed with public and private sector organizations engaged in human and international development. All students sign a commitment to return to their country of origin upon completion of the program and are required to undertake a Diploma Study Project that relates the students’ work at home to Coady’s formal training. Catholic Missions in Canada- raises funds to provide missionaries with the tools they need to catechize throughout 24 Missions Diocese found within Canada. CWL Mission Partners, in conjunction with The League, support six religious education programs. Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA)- Founded by Pope Pius XI in 1926, this association has been a lifeline for the poor throughout the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe. CNEWA works for, through and with the Eastern Catholic churches to identify needs and implement solutions. From forming priests to serve the people of God in Egypt to providing irrigation to farmers in Southern Lebanon- from teaching needy children in Ethiopia to educating sisters in India- from providing emergency relief to Syrian Christian refugees to counseling for war scarred children in Gaza, CNEWA connects you to your brothers and sisters in need. Together we build up the church, affirm human dignity, alleviate poverty, encourage dialogue and inspire hope. Euthanasia Prevention Coalition- The purpose of this coalition is as follows: To preserve and enforce legal prohibitions and ethical guidelines prohibiting “mercy killing”. To increase public awareness of hospice/palliative care. To promote improvement in the quality and availability of hospice/palliative care, and effective methods of controlling pain and suffering. To develop and build compassionate care community services as alternatives to “mercy killing”. To educate the public on the harm and risks associated with the promotion of euthanasia and assisted suicide through the use of pamphlets, information seminars, media campaigns and research articles. To co-ordinate and disseminate research and information on issues related to euthanasia and assisted suicide. To represent the vulnerable and where appropriate, advocate before the courts on issues related to euthanasia and assisted suicide. National Voluntary Fund - In 1988, the League received two generous donations in response to the call for lay formation in Pope John Paul II’s Exhortation, Christifideles Laici. In light of the expressed desire of the League to encourage members’ service “For God and Canada”, the national executive agreed by motion that these donations be used to establish a bursary fund. The bursary fund is used to provide financial assistance to members needing it to pursue studies, courses, seminars, workshops and diploma/degree programs in areas of spiritual growth, adult faith formation, youth ministry, ministry to patients in palliative care, ministry to shut-ins, parliamentary procedure, literacy tutoring. The value of the bursaries awarded depends on the interest generated from the fund in any given year and the number of qualified applicants. The national bursary fund continues to grow with generous support received from members and councils.
