Tuesday 20th March 2018

As we enter week 8 of term 1, we are reminded of how quickly the term seems to pass. Last week

included Monster Trucks and Year 6 Constable Care, Cyber Safety sessions as well as the

commencement of a PEAC style Science program at ASHS for 8 of our year 6 students.

Easter Break

Term 1 is an 11 week term, which in itself is a little unusual, but this is also one of those strange years where Easter falls out of the first term holidays. Next week (week 9) is a four day week as Friday 30th March is Good Friday. The Easter break includes Monday and Tuesday as holidays and students resume back after Easter on Wednesday 4th April.

First Term Holidays

Students break up for Term 1 holidays on Friday 13th April at 3.00pm and resume on Tuesday 1st May.

Teachers will be at work on the 30th April but will be engaged in professional development.

P&C

The P&C AGM was held last Wednesday evening and 32 interested parents

attended. All executive and committee positions were filled. I would like to thank all

of the outgoing executives for their efforts and congratulate the incoming executives

on their willingness and commitment.

The hot topic for the evening was of course the fabric in the school uniform polo shirts. There was some

good discussion and the correspondence between Perm- A- Pleat and the school was tabled. I am

hoping for a resolution this week which I will inform parents of as soon as possible.

Passive Play in the Morning – School Arrival Time

Passive Play is the area that students all meet in the morning before the 8.30 siren. For many years, this

was simply a meet and greet area, but in recent years we have allowed small ball games of handball.

Unfortunately this has created a few problems. The first is that students have been coming to school

earlier and earlier in order to meet their friends and play handball. Students have been turning up around

7.40am, making school supervision very difficult. The second issue is that the handball games have

become more sophisticated and competitive, creating some conflict even before students arrive in class

for the day ahead.

At present we are trialling a period of “no ball games in passive play” which is how we operated until

recent years. This period commenced last week and will continue until the end of term. I ask parents to

support us with this change. Students should ideally, turn up at school between 8.15am and 8.30am for

an 8.45am start.

Mediation Room

Many parents will have heard of the Mediation Room. In the eyes of some students, the worst thing

possible is to be sent to this room at recess or lunch and I am sure that to some it conjures up a picture

of a medieval dungeon. This is certainly not the case and I seek the support of parents to help dispel this

myth.

The mediation room is supervised by a member of the admin team every recess and lunch break. Mr

Kidd, Mrs Curd, Miss Uren and Mr Owen are on a roster to provide this supervision. All duty teachers

have two way radios and so do the admin in the mediation room. If students have any form of conflict or

concern in the playground, the issue is radioed through and the students go to “mediate” the issue in a

quiet environment. This allows the duty teacher to get on with the job of doing duty. On most occasions,

the students participate in the mediation and return to the playground. If, during the mediation process, a

student is found to have broken school rules, been unacceptably aggressive or rough, stolen something,

used poor language or some similar behaviour, they may stay in mediation for a number of recess and

lunch periods as a consequence for their actions.

VIRTUES This fortnight, our Core Virtue is Perseverance Perseverance is being purposeful and steadfast. It is sticking to something, staying committed, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles appear to stop you. A good example is the story of the tortoise and the hare. Even though the tortoise was slower than the hare, he won the race because he persevered – he didn’t let anything stop him or distract him. He kept on going.

I have perseverance. I keep a steady pace in what I choose to do. I keep on keeping on. I finish what I start. I am a loyal and committed friend.
