At Kingston Adult Education we can help you achieve this in a friendly and adult focussed setting.

Kingston Adult Education sees big changes in 2014-15. After 25 years based at the North Kingston Centre, we are unifying the service by moving to Newent House and improved facilities at the King Charles Centre in Surbiton - the heart of the Royal Borough. We look forward to bringing you high quality teaching and learning at our new site in the 2014-15 academic year. As a show of commitment to learners, the Governors of KAE have decided to freeze prices at last year’s rates. Continue with your academic studies, develop your skills or find a creative and challenging focus for your free time in 2014-15, for 2013 prices.

Mission StatementOur mission is to offer high quality learning and training opportunities to meet the needs of individuals and employers in Kingston and surrounding areas and to work alongside community partners to achieve this.

There is no increase in tuition fees however the cost of exam fees and specialist resources are outside of our control. Increases in Examining Boards charges have been included in the fees.

We want to support people to continue to learn throughout their adult life, both for personal enrichment and to update and extend their skills for the workplace. Kingston Adult Education strives to make learning opportunities accessible to the greatest number of people by offering day and evening courses, additional learning support and reasonable adjustments for any disability where possible.

Statement of Service StandardsKingston Adult Education aims to support people both to make the right choices for their individual needs and to achieve success on their courses.

We do this through the prospectus, by offering good information and advice at our Centres, on our website and at our advice sessions.

We offer high quality teaching across a wide range of courses and opportunities for many learners to achieve qualifications from Entry Level up to Level 3.

Choosing your courseTo help you to make informed decisions about your future learning we offer a free, confidential and impartial information and advice service. If you are not sure which course is right for you, please come and talk to our qualified and experienced staff. Either call 020 8547 6700 or 6875 or ask at the centres’ reception. For specific course queries the curriculum coordinator will be happy to advise you.

All courses have Course Information sheets which can be found on our website by searching for the course and clicking on the ‘additional course details’ link. If you do not have access to the internet please ring and a copy of the course information will be posted to you. Our website can be found on www.kingston.gov.uk and click on ‘Book a Kingston Adult Education Course’ under the ‘Culture, leisure and libraries’ listing.

Some subjects (ESOL, EFL, Childcare, GCSE Maths and English, functional skills) require an interview before enrolment. If you are aged 16-18 years of age and wish to enrol on an accredited course, you will also be interviewed and your Maths and English will be assessed.

Additional learning supportAdditional Learning SupportWe encourage our learners to let us know about their disabilities, sensory impairments, learning difficulties or mental health issues and whenever possible, we will try to make the necessary arrangements to support specific needs across KAE.

If you tell us you have a disability, sensory impairment, learning difficulty or mental health issue when you enrol on a course you will then be sent a letter offering you the opportunity to provide us with more details. This will help us to give you information regarding the additional help we may be able to offer you.

Additional learning support for disabled learners There are induction loop systems for learners with hearing impairments at Newent House, King Charles and Open Learning Centres. There are lifts at our two main sites, and good ramped access for wheelchair users. Wheelchair users and learners with mobility difficulties are requested to inform us as early as possible, to help us to try to make any appropriate adjustments you may require. If you encounter any problems with access, please inform the Centre Manager.

Group for Inclusive Learning (GIL)• We encourage our learners and staff

with specific learning disabilities, mental health issues, physical and sensory impairments to join our GIL discussion group.

• We would like to hear about your views and experiences whilst at KAE.

• The group takes place once a term to talk about how we can improve your learning experience.

Enrolling & paying for your course Many courses fill up quickly so please enrol early to ensure your place. Classes may be closed before the start of term if enrolments are low - so to avoid unnecessary cancellation of classes please enrol early.

Most courses can be booked on-line at: www.kingston.gov.uk any time with a debit or credit card. Please note that surcharges apply to credit card payments.

You can also enrol in person or by telephone during KAE office hours 0900 to 1700 (Mon to Fri). During term time our offices are also open in the evenings from 1700 to 1930 Monday to Thursday.

If you wish to enrol by post please download an enrolment form from our webpage and send the completed enrolment form with a cheque made payable to: Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames to the King Charles Centre. Please mark the envelope ‘Enrolments’.

Course feesCourse fees vary depending on the type of course and the level of subsidy provided for it by the Government. The standard fee listed in the prospectus applies - unless you qualify for concessions or a fully funded free course. Please see information below. Examination and accreditation fees have been included in the course fee wherever possible and this is shown in the prospectus. Most fees include basic equipment but you may have to buy additional materials. Information about what - and when - to buy any additional materials is given on your course information sheet.

Free courses and concessions English and Maths qualificationsIf you do not have English and Maths GCSE (A*-C), you can enrol on a Maths or English course absolutely free. These include all courses from Entry 1 up to GCSE.

Young learnersThe higher standard course fee applies to all 16–18 years old wishing to enrol. If you have left school or college and are aged 16 to 18 on the 31st August 2014 you can enrol for free on courses with codes ending in L as part of a study programme. Within the study programme you will be required to study English and Maths if you have not achieved at least a C grade in either subject. Please call to arrange an interview to discuss your learning programme. Courses are not available for under 16 year olds except for certain Family Learning courses.

Unemployed learnersIf you are unemployed, receiving state benefits and need skills training to get into work, you can enrol on most accredited courses up to Level 2 for free with the agreement of your PA at the local Job Centre Plus.

Learners aged 24 years and older The government no longer subsidises level 3 or higher courses for those aged 24+. Instead you may be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. Please see page 9 for more details.

Concessionary fees for learners aged 19+If the course code does not end in L, you may be entitled to a reduced fee if you are in receipt of one of the income based benefits listed below. Please call to check your eligibility and whether concessions are available on your chosen course.

To qualify for a concessionary fee you must provide current evidence of your entitlement each time you enrol. The evidence should not be more than 6 months old.

EU Residency RequirementIf you have not been resident in the UK or EEA for at least 3 years before the start of your course you may need to pay a higher fee because the Government does not subsidise your learning. This will be double the tuition element of the majority of course fees. Please check your eligibility at KAE Centre receptions at the time of enrolling.

Learner Support FundIf you are on a low income and wish to enrol on an accredited course where concessions do not apply, you may be eligible for financial help with childcare and/or other course costs through the Learner Support Fund. When you enrol, please ask at KAE Centre receptions for details.

Paying Fees by InstalmentsIf your course costs more than £199 and it will be difficult for you to pay the whole amount when you enrol, please ask the team at KAE Centre Receptions who can arrange payment by Direct Debit. You will need to enrol in person and pay the first £100. The balance of your fees will then be collected in equal instalments over the length of your course.

Please note that if you do not complete the course you will still be liable to pay the full fee. KAE will take action for payment default through the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames Council.

Refund policyFees are non-refundable unless the course is cancelled by KAE or if you are unable to start or complete a course for medical reasons. A pro rata refund will be offered for the remainder of the course, less a £12 administration fee. If you are claiming a refund for health reasons you will need to produce a medical certificate.

A copy of our full refund policy is available on our website www.kingston.gov.uk/adulteducation under KAE useful documents and at the Centres.

If you wish to transfer from one course to another a £12 fee will apply.

Employment SponsorshipIf your employer is paying for your course, you will need to provide a letter from your employer on headed paper confirming they intend to pay, with the course name and code, amount and a contact name for payment. Kingston Adult Education will then invoice your employer directly. Please note fee payments cannot be transferred between individuals.

Booking ConditionsEquality & DiversityKAE welcomes people regardless of their gender, age, race, sexual orientation, language, religious or cultural beliefs, sensory impairment, learning difficulties or mental health status. In order to monitor equality and diversity we ask all learners to provide personal information which is collected for statistical analysis. The information you provide is kept confidentially but may be passed to the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) which is registered under the Data Protection Act.

Kingston Arts membershipKingston Adult Education is a member of Kingston Arts, a charitable organisation, supporting and nurturing local talent. As a KAE learner you can take advantage of the benefits of KAE’s membership and claim discounts in a number of local shops and venues. For an up to date list of shops and venues participating in the scheme please check on the Kingston Arts website. Collect a Kingston Arts membership card from a KAE reception and present it when claiming a discount.

Learner informationTravelling to centres King Charles and Newent House are close to good public transport links. Buses 281, 406 and 418 stop close to both main centres. Surbiton mainline station is a short walk to Newent House and King Charles Centre. There is limited parking at the centres, and priority is given to those with a disability.

Facilities Hot drink vending machines are available at King Charles, Newent House and Coombe Evening Centre. There is also a snack and cold drink vending machine at King Charles Centre and during the day light meals are available.

No smoking For the comfort and safety of everyone at our centres, smoking is permitted only in designated smoking areas within the centre grounds.

Class closure KAE reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient numbers have enrolled. You may be offered a shorter course for the same fee. Where a tutor is unable to teach a class, every effort is made to find a substitute or replacement.

If a class is closed:• Your fees will be refunded in line with our

refund policy.• You will be notified, where possible, at

least 24hrs in advance of the class time, normally by phone.

• You will be offered, where possible, the option of transferring to another class.

Registers & Learning Agreements It is a legal requirement that attendance is monitored by means of registers for each class. You will be required to sign and return an individual learning plan. These are required by the Skills Funding Agency who provides the funding that subsidises the majority of courses.

Health & SafetyWhere physical activities are taking place, learners should ensure that they are medically fit for the proposed activity. You

must complete a Health Questionnaire once every academic year if you enrol on a Health and Fitness course. This is compulsory. You should also inform your tutor if your health condition changes during the time of your course - and complete a new Health Questionnaire with updated information.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans

Key facts• You must be living in the UK for three years

immediately before the start of the course.• Minimum loan is £300.• The loan is not means tested or subject to any

credit check.• The loan is available irrespective of your

employment status.• Interest on your loan will be based on inflation

(RPI).• You will not have to pay anything back until

your income is over £21,000 a year.• Repayments start on the April after completing

the course, provided you are earning more than £21,000.

• If you are unsure about taking out a loan you can get independent financial advice from the Money Advice Service www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk (Please note KAE staff are unable to offer any financial guidance)

How to apply • Please ask at KAE receptions for a Learning

and Funding Information Letter which will provide all the information you will need to complete the loan application.

• Apply online via www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans or download the application form. You should apply as early as possible and preferably at least 6 weeks before the start of your course.

• Student Finance England will send a letter confirming your loan – usually within 2 weeks if you apply online (postal applications will take longer).

• Student Finance England will pay your agreed tuition fees directly to KAE once we have confirmed your attendance.

Repaying the Loan• Your monthly repayment amount will be 9% of

any income you earn over £21,000.• If you are an employee, your employer will

work out your repayments and take them out of your salary with your tax.

• If you are self-employed, you make repayments as part of your Self Assessment Tax Return.

• You can pay some or all of your loan at any time without an extra charge.

If you leave your course early• Student Finance England will stop the

payments to Kingston Adult Education for your course.

• You will become liable for the balance of the course fee and will be invoiced directly by KAE.

• You will have to pay back to the Student Finance England any money (plus interest) that has been paid to KAE.

The government no longer directly funds adults on courses at level 3 or above. Instead loans are available to cover tuition costs,

in a similar way to student loans in higher education.

The loan is available to anyone who is:• Aged 24 or older at the start of the course • Studying for a qualification at level 3 or higher.

You can take out a loan for the maximum amount to cover your course fee or use it to pay part of your fee.

There are some courses which are no longer funded by the SFA. The 24 + loan will not be available for these courses. Please check when applying for the loan.

Traineeship CourseProviding FREE help for young people aged 16-24 who are ready to enter employment. Individual help includes help with CV preparation, application forms, interview and employability skills as well as Maths and English qualifications and a work placement module.An extensive work placement is arranged with an employer in sector in which the learner would like to pursue a career.Course runs according to demand and suitability of learners. If you want to improve your spelling, reading, writing or maths, the Open Learning Centre could be for you.

If you want to update your skills for work, get a job, or help your child with homework, we can help.

At our centres you can use books, tapes, CD ROMs, worksheets and computers.

How long is the course?You will learn at your own pace and achieve your qualification when you feel ready.

A tutor will be there to help at all times and an individual programme will be designed just for you.

All courses are accredited, so you will receive a certificate on successful completion.

You will be able to take the national Functional Skills tests in English and Maths.

These tests are required by many employers and can help you to get on to college courses or provide evidence for your C.V. There are tests throughout the year and you can take them when you feel ready. You can also prepare for GCSE English or Maths courses which will start in September 2015, by coming along to the centre now! Discovering London Discover the rich cultural legacy of London. You will examine the works of architects, artists, planners and others who have created London both inside and out. There will be the option of visits outside class-time to some of those places discussed in class.

Continuing the Coastal Geology of England and Wales This Geological tour of the coast of England and Wales commenced in Northumberland

last academic year and toured the coastline of Eastern England. We will continue our clockwise coastal journey this year. It will cover vast eons of geological time and we will study the rocks, minerals, fossils and structures and the landforms to which they give rise, using actual specimens, colour slides, maps and photographs.

London Churches London Blue Badge guide, Tim Kidd, will look at London’s amazing variety of churches from the modest to the spectacular and will provide background information to inspire you to go and visit the buildings.

Beginners Entry Level 3 Spanish For complete beginners with no previous knowledge of the language. The Entry 3 is shorter than the Level 1 course and you will have the chance to achieve a qualification at Entry 3 (one level below level 1). The Entry 3 qualification gived a basic insight into speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Level 1 (first year) - Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese & Spanish For complete beginners with no previous knowledge of the language. The first year assessments focus on speaking and listening. You will acquire basic grammatical knowledge and vocabulary, which will enable you to greet people, order a meal, ask directions and hold a simple conversation.

Level 1 (second year) - Arabic, French, Italian, Polish & Spanish You have some good basic knowledge and are already able to communicate in a simple way. This second year assessments focus on reading and writing and will enable you to begin to express ideas using the present, past and future tenses in order to ask questions and express opinions.

GCSE - Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish For learners who have had approximately 2 years of previous study of the language. You will work towards the GCSE examination, which is less formal than in previous years. The speaking and writing part will be assessed in the classroom setting during February, March and /or April - whenever learners are ready.

Spanish GCSE revision and preparation class Revision of grammar, vocabulary and spoken Spanish. You will revise all the typical GCSE topics.

GCE (Advanced Subsidiary) AS Level – German & Spanish You must have reached GCSE level or equivalent. You will learn to speak and write more competently and be able to discuss topics of interest. You will also increase your knowledge of the country whose language you are studying.

GCE A2 Level continuation – fast track (A2 examination June 2015) - Italian, Spanish & Russian Most learners will have completed both the A/S and also the first year of the A2 course. However, newcomers are welcome subject to interview with Barbara Sanctuary. We will continue with the A-Level syllabus and read and discuss the chosen literature and study a particular geographical area. Furthermore students will learn about social, political and historical issues of the country whose language they are learning.

GCE A2 Level – 2 year course - French, & Spanish (A non-exam option is available, please see below) These accredited courses follow the A2 syllabus and cover literature, geography and social and political issues of the country whose language you are studying. Essay writing, listening comprehension and grammar exercises are also part of the course. The A2 exam will be taken in June 2016. Due to differing government subsidy levels the following fee arrangements apply:• If you are 16–18 years old on 31st August

2014 and have left school or college, you can enrol for free on courses with codes ending in L as part of a study programme. Within the study programme you will be required to also study English and Maths if you have not achieved at least a C grade in either subject. Please call to arrange an interview to discuss your learning programme If you are still at school or college you will be charged the 24+ standard fee. This is due to changes in government funding.

• If you are aged 19-23 years of age you will pay a reduced fee if you commit to the two years of study and take the exam in June 2016.

• If you are aged 24 or older and intend to take the exam in June 2016, you can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan (see page 9 for details) or meet the cost yourself.

Lower Intermediate (pre-GCSE level) Consolidation - French For those who have studied French for at least a year in the past but do not want at present to join a structured course. Revise and practise both grammar and vocabulary but the main focus will be on spoken French. Most learners are ready to join a GCSE course at the end of the course.

Lower Intermediate (pre GCSE Level) Revision - Arabic, German & Spanish A short course to revise previous knowledge of the language. There will be revison of both grammar and vocabulary but the main focus will be on speaking and understanding. This course is not exam based. The German course is useful for learners who might be working towards GCSE or equivalent. Arabic and Spanish is useful for those who are working towards GCSE or equivalent level.

Intermediate Level - French, German, Italian & Spanish (Post GCSE grammar and conversation & consolidation courses) For those who have reached a good intermediate level and do not want to take further exams at present. Focusing on speaking skills and the correct use of grammatical structures.

Higher Intermediate (post AS Level) - Polish For those who have reached the equivalent of AS level and want to further improve their knowledge of both grammar and vocabulary and also achieve good conversational skills.

Higher Intermediate Conversation Circles (post AS/A2 Level) - French, Italian & Spanish For those who are beyond A/S or A2 level and want to improve further. Discussion, listening comprehension, short translations and grammar exercises are part of the course. Gain insight into the culture and contemporary life of the country whose language you study.

Higher Conversation Circles (fluent/near fluent speakers) - French, German & Spanish You may have lived in a French/German/Spanish speaking country or have reached degree level. Consolidate and develop your conversation skills through discussions of topical issues. Listening comprehension, translations and advanced grammar exercises form part of the course.

Brush up your Rusty School French Provided you have a good basic knowledge of the language, this course gives you the opportunity to refresh your spoken and written skills.

Revision courses for AS & A2 Level learners Revision for AS or A2 level courses. Focusing on the oral exam and essay writing skills. Preparartion for A2 learners on the different topics needed for the exam.

Are you thinking about teaching in the post-16 sector? The qualification is suitable for those who work or want to work as:

• Teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector, i.e. further, adult and community education, work-based learning and the voluntary sector, provided they are qualified/experienced at the appropriate level in the subject they intend to teach.

• Technicians and support staff in further and adult education.

What does the course cover? This course contains both theory and practical assessments in the following units:• Roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training• Understanding and using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training• Understanding the principles and practices of assessment in education and training

NB. There are 5 assignments and applicants will be required to carry out a micro teaching session at the centre.

What are the requirements? You must be able to identify at the start of the course the occupational teaching/training area you wish to deliver and evidence relevant qualifications and/or experience.

You must be prepared to undertake an initial assessment of your literacy skills, as candidates are expected to be able to work at a minimum of Level 2 literacy on entry. An additional requirement is to undertake a numeracy assessment but the outcome will not affect your entry onto the course. Candidates are required to be at least 19 years old.

Progress and Assessment The Award is worth 12 credits. Progression would normally be onto a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.
