solution to bring Foster + Partners architectural vision for the terminal to life. Together, they created an environmentally sensitive landmark that makes a lasting first impression on visitors both from the ground and in the air.

Technical Illustration

Foster + Partners vision was to create a terminal building to reflect the importance of the airport as an important gateway to the Levant, while remaining sensitive to regional tastes and the environment.

The main feature of the building design is the tessellated roof canopy, which extends to provide shade for the faades. This consists of 127 shallow curved concrete domes, inspired by Bedouin tents, which branch out from supporting columns like palm leaves. The domes are covered by unique,

double-curved steel petals. Daylight enters the building beneath through split beams at the column junctions, while a geometric pattern based on traditional Islamic forms appears on each exposed soffit.

The local climate presented a challenge for the energy performance of the terminal, with dramatic variations in summer day and night time temperatures an issue. To resolve this, the main bulk of the building is constructed entirely from concrete, the high thermal mass of

which provides passive environmental control. To protect the dark-coloured roof from expansion and high heat gain during the day, a 300mm void was specified between the steel standing seam system and the precast concrete shells, which were in turn insulated and covered with a single-ply weatherproof membrane. The void was then ventilated with a series of 50mm holes drilled into the centre of each dome, designed to encourage convection to prevent the space from becoming too warm.

A bespoke engineered solution was required to meet the complex technical, aesthetic and environmental brief, but with Kingspans expertise the complex double-curved 3D roof design became a reality. KingZip was the ideal solution for this project because its flexibility allows architects to meet almost any design need. It is available in multiple metal types and paint system finishes, and an enormous variety of lengths, widths and curvatures.

A lightweight steel structure was created, covered with KingZip standing seam sheets, which were curved from the eaves to the apex, and on the opposite side from the apex to the eaves. This layout met all of the necessary criteria, forming the roofs unique double-curved petal shape and maintaining the 300mm void between the standing seam sheets and the concrete shells. The lightweight steel frame designed to support the standing seam system needed to be strong enough to

accommodate the negative wind loadings possible across the entire 45,000m2 roof. Kingspan prepared all of the working drawings for the standing seam and designed the supporting steel arrangement. During installation, the team was on hand to modify the design for individual domes where variance occurred in the concrete substructure, using curved tapered sheets and packers to ensure the desired appearance was maintained.

an exciting way for visitors to experience the compelling history of the Royal Australian Navy. As a significant extension for the Museum, the buildings design was to be both striking and functional, while bringing the narratives of maritime war to life.

Technical Illustration

The project brief was for a building that made an architectural statement, yet did not overpower the vessels adjacent and integral to the Pavilion. Instead, the building was to provide a sense of welcome and anticipation for visitors approaching the wharf and the vessels, and complement the broader context of the Museum and the city. The form was inspired by the techniques and geometrical rigour of boat building while the conceptual approach closely referenced the

wake of a boat as it passes through the water. The external and internal geometry was generated as one and the same. This was a direct outcome of using Kingspans BENCHMARK Evolution panels, which provided a finished internal and external surface.

The project scope required 891m2 of wall panels that would be slim enough to maximise the useable internal space while maintaining thermal resistance values. Due to the buildings location on Darling Harbour, the exterior would need to be

weather-proof and deliver continuity of colour despite the harbour-side environmental conditions.

They also allowed modularity and repetition in the installation, and provided a single faade component with internal lining, insulation, and external lining that provided the desired performance.

The Pavilion faade was generated as a series of complex geometrical rotations of 1m wide panels, which were sized to maintain the efficient use of the standard width of Kingspans panels. The biggest challenge was using the panels to create these complex geometries of the faade while maintaining a water tight external skin at the joint intervals.

Build Stage

The panels had not previously been used in this way which provided an opportunity to rethink how the product could be adapted to suit the technical challenges, while still maintaining the very strong design intent. James Perry, Senior Associate at fjmtstudio.

There was also an added complexity where a glass oculus, comprising of 1m wide panels of glass, was integrated and continued the geometry of the faade.

The aggressive salt air environment required a durable faade solution and the sleek, exposed faade design posed unique installation

challenges. JML Engineered Facades (NSW) closely collaborated with the consultant team during the design development stage to resolve the projects complex joint geometry, while maintaining the integrity and unique benefits and aesthetics of the Kingspan panels.

Kingspans integrated systems and building technology have been used to create this vibrant 390,000ft2 landmark retail and leisure development at the heart of Newport, Wales, meeting stringent demands for faade design, rapid build and superior energy performance.

Project Overview Technical Illustration

The architects design philosophy was to create a series of buildings each with their own individual character, using a colour palette that referenced the locality. Alongside brick and timber, they chose Kingspans BENCHMARK Karrier system with aluminium cassettes in shades of green to reflect the surrounding hills, and in terracotta hues reminiscent of some of the older buildings in Newport city centre.

During the planning process, the colourful design was brought to life using digital models to show the coloured elevations, and the architects used physical product samples to help illustrate the concept to planners, the Design Review Panel and the public.

One of the largest buildings on the site was designed for retailer Debenhams. Because this was

immediately adjacent to a narrow street, it was important to minimise the sense of mass of the building to be sympathetic to the location. The architect worked closely with Kingspan to determine the most appropriate colours and finishes to be used in the building faade to achieve this effect.

Kingspans involvement in the Friars Walk project went beyond the typical role of a manufacturer. Because of the unique design and performance specifications for the site, Kingspan was asked to work closely with the architect and contractor from day one to determine creative solutions to some of the design challenges in the brief.

These challenges included the creation of a number of bespoke ancillaries, including vertical rails for the hook-on cassettes, factory-

cranked corner cassettes to give a smoother look, flashings made to match the thickness of the cassettes at strategic reveal points, and a penetrating steel fixing solution for store signage.

For the cinema building, Kingspan worked closely with the cladding contractor and the architect to deliver a colourful terracotta faade incorporating LED lighting, ensuring the buildings bright design made an equally strong impression at night.

Along with its design flexibility, the BENCHMARK integrated faade system was chosen because it allowed the contractor to quickly create a weathertight building, which meant internal fit-out could take place sooner, concurrently with the finishing details on the faade. The system was also chosen because of its superior thermal insulation and air tightness performance. With minimal junctions and reduced air leakage, it was easier to achieve the desired BREEAM Excellent rating, all while allowing for maximum design flexibility.

The inherent flexibility of the BENCHMARK Karrier system together with close collaboration with the architect resulted in a bespoke solution for this project including an integrated lit faade, sleek signage, contrasting gloss and matt finishes, specialist flashings at strategic reveal points and unique corner features.

The architects design philosophy was to create a series of buildings each with their own individual character, using a colour palette that referenced the locality. Alongside brick and timber, aluminium cassettes in shades of green were chosen to reflect the surrounding hills, and in terracotta hues reminiscent of some of the older buildings in Newport city centre.

Because of the unique design and performance specifications for the site, Kingspan was asked to work closely with the architect and contractor from day one to determine creative solutions to some of the design challenges in the brief.
