“He became what we are that we might become what he is” St Athanasius Dear friends The month of March brings with it the final three Sundays in Lent, before we move into Holy Week and our Easter celebrations! For Christians it is the most poignant time of year, as we are encouraged once more to recall Christ’s passion, death and resurrection, and to consider how “[Jesus] became what we are that we might become what he is”. While many choose to ‘go away’ for the Easter holidays, we’re invited to ‘come home’ – home to the very heart and core of our faith, and home to the very essence of what binds us together as a Christian community. We’ve arranged what we hope will be moving and meaningful worship opportunities for Holy Week and Easter, and invite you to attend as many of these as you are able. that we might become what he is” St Athanasius

Dear friends The month of March brings with it the final three Sundays in Lent, before we move into Holy Week and our Easter celebrations! Particularly, we invite you to make the TRIDUUM a priority – attending worship on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday – as the liturgies on these three Great Days form part of one profound liturgy of remembrance and celebration. Discovering

Sacred Pathways

This Lent and Easter we will

explore ancient sacred

pathways through the lives of

the saints, and discover new

sacred pathways for ourselves

as we live each day as followers

of Jesus.

Easter at Meath

We will celebrate the resurrection on Wednesday 23rd March at 11.00am with the residents at Meath. Parishioners are invited to attend.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

This year St Anselm’s will be hosting the local World Day of Prayer service for our region. The service will take place on Friday 4th March at 10.00am. Please join us if you are able to!

Special Occasion Society – by Larissa Chatwin Working in retail you’re intensely aware of our “special occasion society.” We lurch from one occasion to another. “Xmas” blurs into Easter, with punctuation marks of New Year’s, Australia Day and Valentine’s in between. We fill out the rest of the year with Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and of course the three month build-up to next Christmas. Add to that your birthday and those of your family and friends, and life can be a pretty much endless special occasion. This can be hard on people’s energy and bank balance. It keeps businesses happy, but what’s good for the economy isn’t always good for morality. What do special occasions offer spiritually? Well, we might justify them by saying they make us think about things we take for granted – our mum, our dad, our partner – even God. But special occasions are often times of overspending and overindulging. We buy people things they don’t need. We stress about our choice of gifts, we compare our gifts and celebrations to other people’s, and the “special” day may even end in arguing or resentment. Is there an alternative? Lent is one such time. The opposite of most “occasions”, Lent is a time not of indulgence, but of restraint. Instead of consuming things, we forego things. And in foregoing things, we may gain a new appreciation of the things we take for granted – and we may even realise how little we really need. To survive. To be happy. Lent is also a time of contemplation – to obey the command to “Be still, and know that I am God.” Through a meditation or mindfulness practice, we can become more aware of the blessings in our daily lives. One of the workings of the Spirit is to give us “new eyes” – a new attitude with which to experience the knowledge and love of God through our interactions with the world. Any practice that requires discipline and focus – whether martial arts, an exercise routine, or colouring in – can help us loosen our attachment to self. We empty ourselves of self, so the Spirit can flow in, and teach us to see in new ways. May this Lent be a special occasion – not of consumption of the world, but of renewal in Christ.

Meditation Group The Meditation Groups meets each

Wednesday in the Prayer Room from

8.00am – 8.30am.

Please chat to Gray Castledine for more

information – 0409 101 131.

Thursday Eucharist A Eucharist is held each Thursday morning at

St Anselm’s at 9.00am.

A quiet, reflective service, without hymns, for

those seeking some sacred space in their

week.

It is followed by a cuppa and a Bible Study.

“Date Night” at St Anselm’s was

a great success. 14 couples enjoyed a candlelight dinner, each at their own little round table, set with chocolates, wine and other delicious food while Anglicare’s Joy Hartig presented a seminar on Gary Chapman’s Five Love Languages.

I think it is safe to say that each couple present took away something new from the night which could be used or applied in their relationship – no matter how “old” or “new” the relationship was. A huge thank-you must go to Debi Baldini and her team of helpers on the night – the catering and service was superb!

FIRST THIRD MINISTRY – Mandy Herriman

We are well into Lent now with Easter just a few short weeks away. It is difficult to focus on Lent practices

when the year feels like it has only just begun, the children are only just back at school or beginning

University and our workplaces are getting back into full swing. Perhaps focusing on some simple Lent

practices will re-centre our souls towards that great festival of the Christian calendar – the death and

resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Learning about a saint every week in our worship services is an ideal way to reflect upon our own lives

and discerning ways we can grow more Christ-like by altering our mind set, our lifestyle choices, our

interpersonal relationships, our prayer and worship life or the way we care about our own bodies.

There are a range of ways that we can re-focus our attention back towards God during this Lent and

incorporate spiritual practices into our everyday lives. Here are some ideas that you might like to use with

your family.

I will be emailing families a Lenten calendar for use during the rest of the Lenten period. You can use

stickers to mark the days or colour them in as you go. This reminds us that Lent is a period of looking

towards and preparing for the Easter events. The calendar is also a good way to mark our spiritual

practices through this period. You may wish to mark some days for some of the following activities.

Research a saint and discuss the characteristics of a saint.

Schedule a regular family walk around the neighbourhood and take note of those places which

feel sacred – it could be where a beautiful tree grows, or a park or walkway.

Adopt a ‘bag a day’ idea – place into the bag an item every day. It could be an item of food to

donate to a food bank at the end of the week. It could be a special prayer for someone. You

might like to write a card for someone who needs some encouragement or a photo of someone

you want to pray for during the day.

Create a set of prayer beads – Take a piece of string for each child and as each day of Lent passes,

allow each child to select a new bead to string. Each bead will represent someone or something

that they will pray for during the day or in their prayer time. At the end of Lent they will have 40

prayer beads on a string which they can then use in their prayer time to help them focus on what

and who they want to pray for.

Create a portable labyrinth. Simply done you can just use a paper plate and some ‘puffy’ paint

and draw on the labyrinth. Once dry, children can trace the lines of the labyrinth with their

fingers. Or you could use a small square of board and glue small pebbles or stones in the design

of labyrinth which would serve the same purpose. The idea of tracing (usually walking it) the

labyrinth is to travel to the centre of the labyrinth and back out again and to do so meditatively

and slowly, focusing on God and their own experience of

God. If you need a labyrinth design, please let me know and

I can provide you with one.

I wish you all a blessed Lent!

PASTORAL CARE – Christine Hetherington

MEMORIAL GARDEN

So much has happened since the last update.

The ground work of clearing the block, back

filling with good soil and the path has been

completed and the fence is up! The

reticulation is in, shade sail up, and plants

planted. The water feature is operational

and beautiful solar lights light up the path

and cross at night. Arguments have already

begun about who is going to have the first

spot in this beautiful space - hopefully no-

one soon. Although many have

contributed to this project, special thanks

must go to Margaret and John Pickering, as

well as Steve Shepherd, for all their hard

work, and for making this project a living,

breathing, peaceful, beautiful space which

we can all be proud of.

Donations can still be made by cash or

electronic transfer.

PASTORAL CARE COURSE

In a faith community such as ours, caring for one another in the good times and the not-so-good times is the responsibility of each member, not just a select few. To support us to do this well, we will be offering our first in-house Pastoral Care Course. It is open to anyone in our community who would like to understand the theological underpinning of pastoral care, increase their pastoral care skills, and simply learn how to care for others in a more meaningful way. Some of those who attend the course may well go on to become Barnabas PALS, or even Lay Pastoral Ministers. Others might simply use it to listen to and care for those sitting alongside them on a Sunday, or perhaps when visiting someone who is ill or grieving. Only prayerful discernment will lead us to knowing what the outcome might be for each individual who attends. The course will run for 5 consecutive Saturdays (30 April and each Saturday in May) from 9am - 2pm. We realise it’s a big time commitment, but so is our commitment to adequately care for one another. More details will be published in the coming weeks. Please chat to Gill or Mark if you’re interested in attending. Sign-up sheets will be available from mid-March.

I felt God’s awesomely peaceful presence on both days, it was an AMAZING EXPERIENCE.

The dedication & commitment of the riders, some of whom were just beginners, was awe inspiring!

Again over $5 million dollars was raised and it made me feel that my little bit of effort is once again helping make big inroads into this crazy illness that affects so many people. Thank you so much for all your dedicated support.

Yep, it spurred me on to register for the 2016 ride, which I hope, God willing, to make an annual event as it is for such a tremendously worthy cause.

LEADERSHIP

Some comments from those who participated in the workshop in February:

Churchsafe – Child Protection Training

With the new approach to training initiatives and the introduction of Protective Behaviours Education, leaders (church wardens, Parish Council members, lay pastoral ministers and liturgical assistants) and those involved with children’s ministry are required to attend training every three years. It is, however, recommended that where possible, everyone should attend one of these sessions over the next 10 months.

Dates and locations for 2016 are: Thursday 28 April - Parish of Kwinana Cnr Chishom Avenue and Bickner Way, Parmelia 9.30am – 1.00pm (Morning Tea provided) Sunday 19 June 2016 - Parish of Swanbourne Cnr Shenton Road and Derby Street, Swanbourne 1.30pm – 4.30pm (Afternoon Tea provided) Wednesday 17 August 2016- Parish of Maddington Cnr Westfield and Sheoak Street, Maddington 9.30am – 1.30pm (Morning Tea Provided) Sunday 23 October 2016 – Parish of Beaconsfield 164 Hampton Road, Beaconsfield 1.30pm – 4.30pm (Afternoon Tea Provided)

Bookings for all sessions can be made on-line at www.perth.anglican.org/churchsafe. Sessions will

be for 3.5 hours inclusive of a tea break. There will be no sessions in 2017.

We are so privileged to be given the opportunity to listen to this dynamic speaker! She has served in the police force for 30 years and is at present seconded to the Anglican and Catholic churches to present Child Protection Training workshops.

4 hours of your life you will never regret spending listening to this amazing ambassador for Child Protection. I encourage every parent and grandparent to attend this course. We each need to be trained and equipped to be ambassadors of protection for all God’s precious children.

Andrea was one of the best presenters I have seen. She gave a clear historical background to the child abuse scandal and a most insightful understanding of reasons for child abuse, the way abusers typically operate and ways to best prevent and protect children. I would unreservedly recommend this seminar to anyone who has any interest whatsoever in grasping the extent of this problem and how to help deal with it. A 15 out of 10 score-card. I’m so glad I went.
