EDITORIAL NEWS AND VIEWS

Articles for the magazine to be sent to the Editorby email to - [email protected]

Copy deadline is the 21st of each month

I hope you’ve been enjoying the lovely Spring weather we’ve been having. Thedaffodils are coming up again, a reminder of the work done by a band of willingvolunteers some years ago. It was a really worthwhile and long-lasting villageproject.

Wasn’t it lucky that the good weather coincided with half term? The forest hasbeen full of families and children making the best of the weather all week.Gardeners and DIYers all over the village are getting geared up for another yearof projects.

It’s great to see that the Scout plant sale is happening again this year. You’ll findthe order form in the centre of this edition of the Kingsley News. This hasalways been an important fundraiser for the Scouts and great value forgardeners all over Kingsley. I hope you’ll be able to support them.

This month’s Kingsley News is full of importation about events coming up inMarch. Here’s advance notice of some April events to put in your diaries.

The April Garden Club meeting on Monday 11th April and will have apresentation by John Rippin the Head Gardener at the National Trust BodnantGardens. This proves to be an amazing presentation and we are looking tomove into the large hall for this event, so come and help fill the seats.

On Monday April 15th (7.30pm) there will be a training session on the use ofdefibrillators at the Community Centre. We are lucky to have 2 defibrillatorswithin Kingsley and it is important to feel confident in the use of the machines ifthe need should arise. Basic CPR (the life saving procedure when someone isnot breathing), will also be covered during the session.

A Table Top Sale will be held in the Community Centre on Saturday April 27(10am-12noon). The charge per table will be £5, so start looking out thoseitems to sell.

Kingsley Garden Club -March 2019

The February meeting of the Garden Club saw a record number of people attending!! Everyone whoturned out for this fascinating yet light hearted talk from George Pilkington on Wildlife Gardeningthoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was clear that George has a passion for nature, bees especially, closely followed by the birds. He showed us how to encourage both species, together withHedgehogs and other wildlife with very simple ideas. The former ex-Royal Marine, Merseyside PoliceOfficer and later MSc and educator brought scouse wit and passion to our February talk.

Our next speaker on 11th March, is Len Tomlinson, a local man (though currently residing inSouthern Ireland), who is known as "The Daffodil Man" from his passion for the humble daffodil. Thispromises once again to be a very interesting and informative presentation.

Gardening Tips and Jobs to be done this month• Add well rotted manure or compost into the top 5cm of your beds• Add blood fish and bone or chicken manure around shrubs and roses

• Put supports in for plants, allow them to grow through rather than have a wrestling match later.

• Move deciduous shrubs and trees, now is the time, just as long as the soil is not water logged or frozen.

• Prune your roses back to outward pointing buds, they can take a hard pruning.

• Prune early flowering clematis.

• Cut the top rosette of leaves off the Mahonia to encourage branching.

• Dead head daffodil after flowering and the old flower heads off hydrangeas

• Chit your potatoes especially your earlies ready for planting out in bags or warmed up beds.

• Cut autumn fruiting raspberry canes back to the ground, and tips out of summer fruiting ones that are getting

to big for the supports

• Mulch your fruit trees and your rhubarb

• Try not to mow your lawn just yet, if you feel you have to, make sure its dry and set your blades high for

the first cut - no skin head cuts!

If you want to know more, come along and see us and do not be afraid to ask, we are all amateurs,we have all mademistakes and continue to do so, and we all ask each other for help or advice. Thereis no single correct answer!

Kingsley Walking Group – March 2019

Our long walk in February started at King’s Gate in Kelsall. It turned out to be a good day withno rain, wind or mud to hold us back. A happy band of 10 enjoyed a walk along the SandstoneTrail to Utkinton, returning through the forest. We clocked up a healthy 8.5 miles.

Although we had planned the short walk from the Leigh Arms last month, the day was snowyso decided against driving anywhere. Instead we had a delightful walk along the river Weaverfrom Kingsley to Pickerings Lock, returning through the snow covered fields.

The next long walk will be onMarch 12th. We will leave the Community Centre at 9.00am,heading for Parbold where we will have a 9 mile walk. It’s mainly quite easy walking with acouple of small hills. The short walk will be onMarch 27th.

Kingsley Walking Group has two walks each month: on the second Tuesday there is a longwalk of 7 - 8.5 miles (bring a packed lunch); on the last Wednesday a short walk ofapproximately 5 miles with a coffee break and pub lunch.

We are a friendly group and everyone is welcome. Information on the walks is available on788132 (short walks), 789098 (long walks).

Kingsley Bookworms Next meeting 14th March 2019 at the Hurst Chapel at 7.30pm

At our February meeting we talked about “The Diary of a Provincial Lady” by E M Delafield. It turned out that there are several diaries in a series starting with one describing an Edwardian Lady’s life. The original diaries were serialised in a newspaper. While we all enjoyed the original diary, some people found that reading all four was too much. We also decided that the diary entries would have been great to see on a weekly basis. We scored the diary 3.75 out of 5. The entire compendium scored rather lower. Last month a group of 10 bookworms went to a CSI Evening with Ashley Dyer (writes crime books as Margaret Murphy) to hear about how forensic experts work with authors. It was held at Widnes Library and cost £3.00! The presentations were really interesting and we gained many insights into how authors work. Helen Pepper (the CSI expert) advises on Shetland and Vera and she shared some insights about working with TV program makers. This was a great evening’s entertainment. At our March meeting we will be talking about “In the Days of Rain” by Rebecca Stott. This is the author’s account of escaping a fundamentalist Christian cult in the UK and won the 2017 Costa biographical award. Some people have already read the book and found it to be compulsive reading. It’s sure to lead to a great discussion. Kingsley Bookworms meet on the second Thursday of each month and everyone is welcome to join us at any of our meetings or events. Meetings start at 7.30pm and are held at the Hurst Chapel. If you want more information, please contact me on [email protected] or call me on 07799 067 457. We have also got our own Facebook page called Kingsley Bookworms.

Litter Pick UpdateThe Kingsley Litter pick has been a regular event in the village for nearly 15years. The work of the litter pick team makes a real difference to the wholevillage. Additional help is always welcome.

The February litter pick team collected 7 bags on the 9th of February. Future litterpicks will be on:

• Saturday 16th of March

• Saturday 13th of April

Why not join us? All equipment is provided. We meet at the Community Centre at11.00.

On Stage Near You

Not already enjoying local shows? You really ought to get out more.

InMarch you should take a look at the following

9 – 16 Chester Little Theatre – A Bunch of Amateurs by Nick Newman and IanHislop. This was performed by Kingsley Players last year but if you missed it,then it is well worth a visit. www.chesterlittletheatre.co.uk

20 – 23 The Grange Theatre. Northwich – Legally Blond The Musical – a schoolproduction. http://thegrangetheatre.com

21 – 23 The Harlequin Theatre, Northwick – Romeo & Juliet – Harlequin YouthTheatre, tell us “Our Youth Theatre has grown and we have split the age groups. Our older members decided they wanted to tackle Shakespeare and they thinkthey are doing very well (and modest – Ed). They are a talented lot so definitelyworth a look.

Our reviews since the last publication principally featured Kingsley Players “DrDoolittle” which was well received and loved by all. Nearly all of our team got tosee it and were impressed by the performance and the costumes as well as thenew projected backdrop. Well done to one and all and we hope you got to seeit.

We also had very good reviews for Ashton Hayes mammoth production of TheLaramie Project which they toured during January and February and finally aBennett aficionado had great praise for People at The Altrincham Garrick. Goodto see a wide variety of theatre available for you all.

If your production or a play you have seen did not appear here then pleaseemail us and do tell us about plays you have seen by [email protected]. John Doe
