Early Learning Programs Primary

School isn’t always like school

Noahs Ark ‘rocked’ during our vacation care program with a host of activities to keep children active and involved.

Popular pastimes included Kitchen Capers (cupcake creations, sushi making, pizza fun to name a few), Ball Games and a return visit by the RSPCA with their Responsible Pet Care Program. In spite of some wet weather spirits weren’t dampened and much fun was had by all.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 4:6

Make Parenting ShiftsAs children grow and mature, parents must make adjustments

in the way they parent. Some of those changes are minor or subtle, others are more significant. In the same way that children go through developmental stages, parents must learn to adapt by shifting the way they interact, care for and discipline their children. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, your child changes and you feel like you’re starting all over again. For instance, when that tiny newborn comes home from the hospital, the baby quickly becomes the focus of attention. The infant sets the schedule for feedings and for sleeping. Often both parents have to adapt their lives around one small child. However, as your baby begins to grow and develop, you change too. You no longer jump for every cry. You begin to set limits on a mobile child and determine a meal schedule for a toddler. One major parenting shift takes place when infants become toddlers.

A common parenting mistake happens when parents don’t make the teenage parenting shift. They continue to treat their teens as if they were nine or ten years old. Parents who don’t make the necessary adjustments, experience increased friction and frustration in family dynamics. As children mature, parents can now communicate with them in a more adult manner by listening and explaining. Change comes through compromise and mutual agreement rather than always strictly complying with the parents’ instructions. Teens need more discussion about issues and concerns. Discipline involves more explaining and talking rather than just requiring compliance. As your children grow, be ready to grow with them and make the necessary changes to influence them effectively.

Strategy for the week: The V of love is what we use to show how the responsibilities and freedoms given to your child widen as they get older. As your child gets older, discussions need to take place about what is expected of them in both responsibilities and freedoms given. The child then has to prove that they are ready for these added privileges. Always discuss and sort out with your child the boundaries expected with consequences and rewards that will take place.

SecondaryToday’s News

Often when we listen to the news, it seems to be all doom and gloom – murders, jobs lost, a fall on the stock market, fighting in many overseas countries, corrupt politicians and on it goes. However as Christians, we know that with our Lord Jesus we, and our children, have a hope and a future. Praise the Lord!! You may enjoy the following Helen Steiner Rice poems –

In Times Like TheseWe read the headlines daily and listen to the news,We shake our heads despairingly and glumly sing the blues,We are restless and dissatisfied and we do not feel secure,We are vaguely discontented with the things we must endure . . . This violent age we live in is filled with nameless fearsAs we listen to the newscasts that come daily to our ears,And we view the threatening future with sad sobrietyAs we’re surrounded daily by increased anxiety . . .How can we find security or stand on solid groundWhen there’s violence and dissension and confusion all around;Where can we go for refuge from the rising tides of hate,Where can we find a haven to escape this shameful fate . . .Instead of reading headlines that disturb the heart and mind,Let us open up the Bible and in doing so we’ll findThat this age is no different from the millions gone before,But in the very hour of crisis God has opened up a doorFor all who seek His guidance and trust His all-wise plan,For God provides protection beyond that devised by man . . .And we learn that each tomorrow is not ours to understand, But lies safely in the keeping of the great Creator’s Hand,And to have the steadfast knowledge that we never walk aloneAnd to rest in the assurance that our every need is knownWill help dispel our worries, our anxieties and care,For doubt and fear are vanquished in the peacefulness of prayer.

Let Not Your Heart Be TroubledWhenever I am troubled and lost in deep despairI bundle all my troubles up and go to God in prayer . . .I tell Him I am heartsick and lost and lonely, too,That my mind is deeply burdened and I don’t know what to do . . .But I know He stilled the tempest and calmed the angry seaAnd I humbly ask if in His love He’ll do the same for me . . .And then I just keep quiet and think only thoughts of PeaceAnd if I abide in stillness my “restless murmurings” cease.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:1, 27

GeneralServeQuote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

... Who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Philippians 2:6-8There are many Christians who want to take dominion over

demons, but there are very few who want to serve by putting out the chairs for a prayer meeting. Sometimes it will be better for you to go to your unsaved and unwell next-door neighbour and provide a hot meal, a freshly baked cake or offer a lift for the children’s school run, than to say anything at all.

In my own life there are times when God calls me specifically to serve others. Whenever I am with Reinhard Bonnke I am called to be a servant to him, making sure that his needs are met, that he has a drink/food/whatever, that I can support his ministry in every way possible. Likewise, Gordon fulfils that role for me. He serves me and yet he is an evangelist in his own right. Everyone of us is called to serve.

We need to be sensitive and discern when it is time to show the love of Christ and be a servant.

Lord, You have said that the greatest shall be servant of all - teach me to serve willingly for Your glory.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remember God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks. Pray. Thankful hearts are happy hearts. Trust the Lord.

SecondaryKokoda Challenge

THINK blood, sweat and tears then add mud, swollen creeks to cross, sludge, leeches and very steep hills.

Three boys from King’s, team name ‘Cheeky Dogs” endured the whole challenge. Jesse Gribben, Joshua Gribben and Thomas Otto finished all 96kms, led by Simon Gribben. MinJin Song added support to the start of the challenge and walked the first 10km with them.

Participants in this year’s Kokoda Challenge, were forced to endure some of the toughest conditions yet in the event’s seven-year history as they tackled the 96km Gold Coast Hinterland track made even more perilous by the unrelenting rain of recent days.

The goal of the Kokoda Challenge is to complete the course as a complete four-person team in honour of the mateship, endurance, courage and sacrifice forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942.

These boys showed all of that and so much more. They raised $745 towards many youth programs including youth suicide and homelessness.

There were 2567 participants in the event, 70% did not complete the event. The boys began at 7.20am Saturday morning, they walked all day, walked without sleep through the whole night, with just torch light to show the way and all of Sunday to arrive battered and bruised, slightly delirious but in amazing spirits with a few funny stories to tell.

Well done boys! What an awesome achievement!

Hillsong ReportsThis year, a total of 220 students and teachers headed out

on a cold frosty morning to embark on a journey to the most amazing Christian conference in Australia, Hillsong Conference. With amazing speakers, life-changing worship and the school community of friends around you, we were excited and ready for the work of God to change our lives through the next week. However, our little expectations were overflown with God’s love and truth throughout the conference. Personally, Louie Giglio was my most favourite speaker, communicating the value of every sound in the universe and how they merge to become an anthem of worship to our great God. His sermon had stunned everybody in the conference. Having 20,000 people in the same auditorium as you, worshipping the same God as you, was just mind-blowing. We, as a group, were spiritually moved and challenged to excel higher than before and complete God’s work for us. Our God is great!

~ Mekayla Date, 11T2

Hillsong was a life-changing experience. Being in a stadium full of thousands of people, all worshipping one God was an experience I will never forget.

Although it was my third time, this was the best yet. Unlike my previous experiences, I went to Hillsong 2012 with an expectant heart and prayed that He would speak into my life and He didn’t disappoint. Coming back from Hillsong, I have a new sense of Godly confidence. I have learnt that I must fulfill God’s plans and do His work, even though I cannot yet see the end purpose. I encourage anyone who has even considered going to Hillsong to go, because you will not be disappointed.

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!

News from the King’s Locker Room WEEK 1

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to Semester 2. We are looking forward to an exciting second half of the year with all our various athletics carnivals and summer sport kicking off for primary and high school. Sport at King’s is really starting to soar to new heights and that is largely due to the enthusiasm and the pride that our students are showing each time they represent our wonderful school. Thank you to all the parents that are committed to helping King’s become a successful sporting school. I really appreciate it. Remember my door is always open so if you have any questions or ideas then please feel free to send me an email or give me a call at the school.

~ Jason Grady, Director of Sport (P-12)

Track TalkAthletics season is in full swing now, and boy it is getting

exciting!! And maybe I’m feeling this way because our school is now the Gold Coast South District champion school!!! Yes you just read that correctly, we are THE BEST athletics school from Coolangatta to Broadbeach, from Carrara to Mudgeeraba.....that’s a massive area which is so very densely packed with other schools. So for our primary athletics team to take out this title (for the first time ever might I add), is an incredible achievement! Oh....and did I mention we beat All Saints and Emmanuel......BY A LOT!!!! I couldn’t be any more proud of our troops, and we are certainly on track for APS success.

As was the case with our running club, we have been having a fantastic number of students regularly attending the athletics training sessions. The KATS program so far has been a great success, which is evident through the drastic improvements across the board with our regular attendees. We have students who, at the start of the training season, had a very average performance level and who are now legitimate APS threats! I applaud not only these students for the hard work, but also their time and effort from our assistant coaches who regularly show up to help the students achieve their goals.

Also, over the holidays, we had our school holiday’s athletics training, which consisted of 6x sessions in total (Tuesdays at the King’s oval, Thursdays at Pizzey Park). We had an average of 30 students show up to these sessions, which came as a surprise to me, but again, just goes to show the dedication. Over these holiday sessions, we had a big emphasis on relays. It’s common knowledge now that both myself and our entire athletics team (students and teachers combined) are aiming to win the APS athletics competition next month, but if we are going to make this a reality, we MUST perform in the relay events. These are DOUBLE points, and last year our school did not win a single relay.....although we had some age groups that were full of fast 100m sprinters. But from what I saw towards the end of our holiday training cycle, I’m quite confident we will win at least 3 relays, and place in the rest of them.....and that will be our trump card for taking out APS.

And lastly, early this term we have the secondary students doing their school athletics carnival. I am hoping to get to see some of our older students in action to see if there is some hidden talent (I rarely see more than six high school students each week at training, so there has to be some talent out there). I’d love to see more of you at training and help you to realise your true potential and also to realise the numerous athletics opportunities that are out there for the high school athlete.

Once again, well done King’s students for your recent success at the district athletics carnival, keep up all your good training, and see you all next session.

Yours in Athletics,

~ James Clark, Kings Head Athletics/Cross Country Coach

Outstanding AchievementsBilly O’Donnell

In the holidays Billy (Year 11) represented QLD in the national championships for AFL. His team had an outstanding carnival winning the championships. Billy received best on ground in the second game, and he had a cracker in the third game against NSW! They were down by 5 goals with 16 minutes to go and then came back to win by 21 points. From all accounts it was a very exciting game.

News from the King’s Locker Room (CONTINUED)

Adele Phillips

Once again our super athlete Adele Phillips (3D) achieved an amazing result over the holidays. Adele won the 2km Junior Dash (7-8yo) at the Gold Coast Marathon. In winning this event Adele also set a new course record of 8.05 min beating the old record by 39 seconds. For those who run, you will know that a 4 minute kilometre is very fast especially from a girl in Year 3. Simply outstanding!!

Chelsea Vesperman and Alicia Green

Two talented Year 9 students, Chelsea Vesperman and Alicia Green, both competed in the World Games Netball Carnival last week, 7-14 July and were grand final winners of the Junior Cup!

The Gold Coast World Netball carnival is a youth sporting event held on the Gold Coast each July and teams come from as far away as England, Tonga, New Zealand, South Australia and Victoria to compete. The carnival has a 21 year history with over 70 teams competing. The event is a week-long carnival focused on spirit and sportsmanship.

The girls played in very challenging conditions, particularly on the Thursday night, when pelting rain and cold winds set in, yet they played on and won every match that night! After a draw with the New Zealand team in the Saturday semi-final, they beat St Mary’s of Adelaide convincingly, 27-7 to take out the grand final.

Both Chelsea and Alicia have been state representative players for several years and their skills and sportsmanship during this great carnival did them both proud!
