Early Learning ProgramsParenting with Power

Scripture of the week: Dear child, if you become wise, I’ll be one happy parent. My heart will dance and sing to the tuneful truth you’ll speak.

Proverbs 23:15

Rules are values put into actionIt is not easy to teach values in your family and explain

the reasons behind your rules. When you think of rules, you may just think of a list of do’s and don’ts that you are trying to impress upon your children. “Do your homework”, “Brush your teeth”, “Tell me the truth”. Rules can be much more than that though. They can be used as the vehicle to com-municate values to your children. When rules are imple-mented and used correctly, children will learn not only to say “Excuse me” before interrupting a conversation, but more importantly, they will learn to respect others and see the value of listening to others first before speaking.

Ask yourself why you require your five-year-old to stay in the yard or your teenager to check in regularly. These are safety issues and develop a sense of accountability to oth-ers. Why do you ask your son to make his bed every day or your daughter to clean and vacuum her room on Saturday? It has to do with the value of neatness and self discipline. Take time to talk about the values, not just the rules. It is a good idea to ask your children why this rule is important to you. You may ask your children questions like:” Why do you think I would like you to …… brush your teeth, let me know where you are, clean your room, etc?

We all have values that we somehow wish our children would develop and take on as their own. As they grow, our children will evaluate our values and choose the ones they understand and can relate to. You have a window of oppor-tunity with your children in which you can teach them the values that you embrace.

Rules are values put into action. They show children what values look like, how to put them into practice and why they are important. If we want our children to embrace our values, we need to teach them what these values are and how to implement them in their lives. Rules become a good vehicle to teach children the things that are most important to us.

Strategy for the week: While you’re pondering on this idea, consider some of the reasons for the rules God has for us, his children. It is a good way to connect with the things that are most valuable to God and his family.

After School Care “My Time, Our Place”

The Noah’s Ark program seeks to provide children with a place to relax and enjoy each others’ company, pursue interests, try new activities and build life skills. Making a batch of play dough is always a popular ac-tivity as well as sharing skills and talents in creative play e.g. the hairdressers’ shop! Homework is also an option!

We welcome Mrs Hayley Campbell to the position of ASC Supervisor.

Take Time

Thursday, August 4, 2011 - Page 3

SecondaryIt is good to take the time each day to be quiet in the

presence of the Lord. It is even better if we have the op-portunity to do this where we can appreciate the beauty of God’s creation and thank Him for it...........

A Perfect Day By Katherine Kehler “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts . . .”

Colossians 3:15A perfect day? What an interesting thought. Because my

life is filled with demands from early morning to night, I have never thought about a perfect day. But I suppose for me it would be a day where I would connect with God most of my waking hours. I have never achieved this goal, but I continually strive toward it.

I have come closer to my goal when I have been on vaca-tion or when we have moved to a new location and have not yet filled my schedule. I had three years of “not so busy” when we moved to an apartment near an ocean. While we lived there, our baby grandson died, so spending hours in quiet reflection by the ocean was very therapeutic.

My favorite place was a large weathered piece of drift-wood. It was shaped like a comfortable old couch and I loved sitting there thinking about life - about God.

This special spot was near a bird sanctuary, so I had the joy of observing a variety of bird life-- ducks, cranes, Cana-dian geese, sandpipers and many others.

One blustery day, I watched a duck on the ocean waves. It didn’t mind the stormy weather - it just sat there in perfect harmony with the rolling waves. The duck moved up, down and sideways and yet it remained calm - didn’t fight or fly away - very peaceful.

Then my eyes were drawn to an energetic sandpiper. When the waves receded it would run quickly toward the water picking up bits of food and then would turn and run away as fast as it could when the water came toward him again. Always running, never resting.

As I sat there watching the birds I thought, “Humans are like these birds.” Some of us go with the flow - take every-thing in stride. Others run from morning till night - rarely sit-ting down. Like the birds, our temperaments are also varied.

God chose to make us that way - unique. He delights in each of us; loves and accepts us with all our idiosyncrasies. A comforting thought.

Pondering God and His creation is satisfying and a perfect way to spend a day.

Father, thank you for the quiet, reflective moments in our lives. Thank you for the peace you offer us. I pray that we would make more time to be reflective—to allow you to quiet our hearts. Amen

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relation-ships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True meaning of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy. Defend the Australian way of life. Encourage goal setting. Be thankful. Bloom where you are. Develop resilience. Too blessed to be stressed. Take time. ~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

Keep Your FocusQuote from Power New Testament (Matthew 4:8-10)

If you feel like you are floundering and need to make sense out of your life, remember you have a purpose: to worship God. In all you do you are to worship God. In worship, you will find focus and happiness! “Finally, the devil took Jesus up on a very high mountain and showed him all the king-doms on earth and their power. The devil said to him, ‘I will give all this to you, if you will bow down and worship me.’ Jesus answered, ‘Go away Satan! The Scriptures say: Wor-ship the Lord your God and serve only him.’

Coles Sports for SchoolsColes Sports for schools is back on and vouchers are

already starting to come to school. Last year we collected nearly 40,000 vouchers and were blessed with heaps of sporting equipment that was spread throughout the pri-mary and secondary school.

This year we want to fill each class with more equipment to use during break times!

A collection box will be placed inside Mrs Fairburn’s office for everyone who is able to collect vouchers! We really appreciate your support and look forward to hopefully reaching 50,000 this year!!!!!

Years 4-7 Athletics CarnivalCongratulations to Finney House – winner of the Aggregate

and Participation shields and to Rayleigh - winner of the House Spirit shield.

The students put in a great effort with maximum partici-pation in the events and some well deserved support and cheering for the athletes from family and friends.

The highlight of the carnival was the finishing relay events which consisted of 9/10, 11 and 12/13 age group relays fol-lowed by the All-age relay. The All-age relay has 10 runners – a boy and girl from each age group. Joining the primary teams this year were also the Year 11 HPE helpers and Col-lege staff teams. This was a very exciting race with a few changes in the lead during the race. Congratulations to the Year 11 team for finishing 1st and outrunning the staff team.
