Inside the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade

By Steve Johnson

July 2015 Wildland Fires

Kings Mountain is lucky to be close to the ocean with lots of fog. You may not like the fog but I love it. It provides moisture and high humidity that helps any forest fires from becoming a danger to the community, including your house. But there are certain weather conditions that could result in a large fire in our area. These include:

Several days of hot weather (dries out the burnable material) Low humidity (25 % or less vs. our usual 50-60 %) High wind conditions Drought Sudden changes in weather

I have been involved in about 15 wildland fires on Kings Mountain in the 20 years I was an active firefighter. The largest was about 30 acres. Many fires are much larger. If you hike the mountain you can see remnants of larges fires from the 1930’s era. Large charred redwoods stumps with a ring of new trees around them. My last wildland fire was the Huddart Park fire in 2007. We were paged out at about 3 AM based on a report of flames seen from Interstate 280. Chief Sullivan found the fire at about 5 AM, deep in the woods down the Richards Rd. trail about a half mile south of the fire station. That call lasted 17 hours. But we got it out! There have been many fires in the open space area. I was on one in the open space in early evening. After about 45 minutes, the Skylonda captain called us all to evacuate. The fire was caused by a live power line down! Another danger of fighting fires! There are several methods of fighting a wild fire, including a “progressive lay” hose attack, mobile attack and aircraft drops of retardant or water. But the most common method is to use hand tools (shovel, pick (Polosky), a large rake/hoe called a Macleod and brush cutters. The idea is to isolate the fire by building a bare earth barrier around the perimeter. All this takes time, so most wildland fire responses last several hours to several days. A fire crew is often left overnight to ensure there are no flare ups of missed “hot spots.” I’ll have another article on this later in the year. Safety Tip of the Month: Protecting your house from wildland fires. Structure protection is one of the duties of wildland firefighting. The fire department goal is that no structures (homes) are lost during a fire. But you can do a lot to help the fire department save your home. Start with 100 ‘of “defensible space” around your house. Or at least a large clear area that the fire can’t jump. Move any combustibles around the exterior, such as brush piles, firewood stacked against the house, pine leaves on the roof or in gutters, etc. And have a hose ready. Also make sure your driveway is fire engine-accessible. Contact me at [email protected] for more information.

ANNUAL DINNER by Sam Penman

“The 2015 KMA Annual Dinner proved an underwater delight with corsages and bou-tonnieres for all of our Prom Night attendees. We mingled, we tippled, we ate a delicious meal, and then danced the night away. Spe-cial thanks goes out to Larry and Pat Mann, Frida Bowman, Carol Forester, Jean Turri, Doug Westover, and of course, the “many hands makes light work” clean up crew. Much apologies for those of you I’ve omitted to thank by name…….the wine on the night was quite good! We hope you can join us next year.”

SUMMER BBQ & CAR/QUILT SHOWby Sam Penman“Considering it was an inaugural twist on an old favorite – this years BBQ went off with-out a hitch (or should that read stitch?), and can only grow to become an even bigger and better event for all to enjoy. The typical BBQ fare was soooooooo good, and only rivaled by dear neighbors, good friends, fine vehicles and some exceptional quilting examples. We really appreciate your volunteerism, sug-gestions, and participation in expanding the scope of our KMA gatherings to appeal to the broader community.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: JOBS YOU CAN SIGN UP FOR…

WELCOMING COMMITTEE: THALEA & DAVID TORRES 851-1197

Volunteers are needed to welcome our artists and to help direct them to their spaces. Help is needed on Friday afternoon September 4th from 1:00 pm in the afternoon and on the first day of the fair…on September 5th, at 7:00 am in the morning. So, whether you are a “night person” or an “early morning person,” there is a place for you on the Welcoming Committee!

ARTIST REGISTRATION: PAT WURSTER 851-2272

Another great way to get acquainted with the artists. Volunteers are needed on Friday, September 4th from 1:00 pm in the afternoon and Saturday morning, September 5th from 7:00 am until about 9:30 am Once again, a great job for night or morning people!

KIDDIE HOLLOW: PAT MANN 851-3598

If you don’t like getting your hands dirty with paint, glitter or glue, this may not be the place to volunteer. But if you like to put smiles on the faces of multitudes of children, this is the place for you! Kiddie Hollow is designed to give kids a place where they can have fun away from the breakables while their parents browse (and hopefully buy!) Kiddie Hollow does have a youth group helping, but we can always use extra volunteers. Two-hour shifts would be welcomed but not necessary.

Also, if you have small children and want to volunteer for the other areas, your children are welcome in Kiddie Hollow so that you can serve the Art Fair.

NICK KROMAT 529-9833SHUTTLE RIDERS: HANK STERN 851-3437

This is a great way to meet hoards of people waiting just to see you! We now have professional shuttle drivers, due to liability concerns, but we put a volunteer rider on each shuttle. The riders help people on and off, and answer questions about the Fair and generally “sell” the Fair to customers on the shuttles. Riders are needed for 2 hour shifts on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

An ideal job for people oriented, fun-loving, relaxed types. Bring your sense of humor and spread good cheer to the customers riding the shuttles!

COOK SHACK aka GRILL 56: CINDY PHELPS 851-4157

BREAKFAST & LUNCH CREW: The Art Fair food service needs YOU to help us feed the hungry masses (and the volunteers as well!!) Your help is needed for both Breakfast and Lunch. Jobs: servers, grill masters, food prep, cashiers, condiment set up, coffee servers, bunner/baggers, tray washing, ice cream monitors, and light clean up chores. Every job is important (and we have lots of them)- so please sign up for as many time slots as you can manage. There are 3 shifts per day from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Have loads of fun working with other friendly and energetic folks and meet your neighbors. Let’s make this another memorable Art Fair on Kings Mountain!

T-SHIRTS & COMMEMORATIVES: THARUNA 529-9241

This is a great volunteer position for those that like to be in the shade, need to rest their feet now and then, want to be close to the beer booth, and like to chat with the fair participants. Shifts are Sat/Sun/Mon: 9:30-11:30am, 11:00am -1:00pm, noon-2:00pm, 1:00 - 3:00pm, 2:00 - 4:00pm, 3:00 - 5:00pm.

BEVERAGE/BEER BOOTH: DENNIS RUBY 851-2111 [email protected]

Beverage Booth Servers are needed for each of the three shifts each day of the Art Fair at both of our scenic locations. If you like people who are, or think they are, “the life of the party”, we have a position just for you. The only qualifications for the job are a desire to pour beer, wine, soft drinks and waters if under 21; a smile and a sense of humor is nice, but not necessary. Basic addition and subtraction are optional as long as all errors favor the house. Salary paid in kind, but if under 21 limited to soft drinks and water.

BOOTH SITTING: JEANNE CARLSON 773-3865 [email protected]

”Give the Artists a Break!” As a booth sitter your job is to give the artists a chance to take a break and stretch their legs, or to run and get lunch or a cup of coffee for them. This is a wonderful chance for you to meet the artists and learn about their craft. It’s also a fun and relaxing way to meet the artists at the same time. They are extremely grateful for this service that you can provide.

SIGNS & GRAPHICS: KATRIN GOSLING [email protected]

If you’re looking for a graphic design, reprints, art for an Art Fair logo, or in need of a sign for your Art Fair section call this number. Volunteers are welcome to help hang signs on the Friday before Saturday’s opening.

New signs must be ordered two weeks before Art Fair dates.

PUBLICITY: MARIA KING 851-4843

You can do your part before the Kings Mountain ArtFair begins. We need help putting posters up throughout the Bay Area. You can sign up with the Poster Posse. You can put them up in an area where you work or play or go to school. The placement of posters before the fair can be one of the most rewarding. This all volunteer crew is responsible for getting the word out to other communities before the fair. You will be armed with thumbtacks and tape to spread the word. Please give us a call.

INFORMATION CENTER: STACY MCCARTHY–RABIN 529-3455 [email protected]

If you like people, this is a fantastic place to be. Think of yourself as a KM ArtFair Community Ambassador and host, greeting guests, answering questions about the Fair and about living on Kings Mountain. You’ll help quests who lose their way, get separated from friends and family, need an ATM and lose or find keys, cameras, and purchases. Volunteers needed Sat, Sun, Mon, 9-12, 2-3 and 3-5.

Zero Waste Patrol

Volunteers are needed to help establish the Kings Mountain Art Fair as a Zero Waste Event (Zero Waste). Our goal: all the trash from the Fair will be composted or recycled. While the recycling/garbage crew has been slowly work towards this goal over the years, we are finally in a position to actually achieve it, with your help.

Volunteers will:1. help fair goers deposit their left overs into the proper containers, 2. transport bags to the Green Waste compost and recycling bins, 3. provide fair goers and fair volunteers with information about our recycling and com-

posting program.

We hope to establish 3 - hour shifts for volunteers. Please sign up and help pass the word about this new program.

Please contact Ken [email protected]

Hello Kings Mtn Community,We are excited to annouce and introduce the new name for the local artists. It will no longer be “Mountain Folk Art”. The New name is “Mountain Artists”. We understand that many of you are used to the previous local name, but it did confuse many of the patrons of the Kings Mtn Art Fair. Some people thought we were Folk Artists or played Folk Music. We feel that Mountain Artists will better represent us local artists. We hope you enjoy the new name.... See you at the fair! Bow Sterger - Mountain Artist Chairman/Coordinator - [email protected]

Jasmine’s  owner  Trish  would  like  to  thank  the  community  for  helping  to  find  the  dog  5  weeks  after  she  escaped.  Jasmine  started  out  from  downtown  Woodside  and  made  her  way  up  Kings  Mountain  with  final  sightings  off  Skyline.  Trish  contacted  KMA  to  possibly  hosting  a  “thank  you  party”.    The  board  agreed  that  KMA  was  not  the  appropriate  forum???  For  this  event.    A  thank  you  in  the  ECHO  and  on  the  KM  Yahoo  group  to  be  submitted  in  the  meantime.

Next  Meeting:    July  16,  2015

KMA  Board  Meeting  Minutes  –  July  16,  2015

Call  To  Order:    Sybil  Plank  called  the  meeting  to  order  at  7:00pm.

Attendance:

Board  members:  Sybil  Plank,  Kathy  Shubin,  Ingrid  Hegerberg,  Sam  Penman,  Eric  Soult  and  Bob  Moriarty

Excused:    Linda  Gang

Walk  In:    Kristine  Schaefer  and  John  Frederickson

Secretary’s  Report:    June  minutes  were  approved.

Treasurer’s  Report:    Sybil  Plank  presented  the  Treasurer’s  Report  and  the  Budget  Report  on  behalf  of  Linda  Gang.    The  Summer  BBQ  came  in  under  budget  and  whilst  many  members  renewed,  we  only  have  one  new  member  for  June/July..

Public  Notices  Received  by  KMA:    Utilize  The  Almanac  and  San  Mateo  County  Permit  Dept  to  research/relay  information  pertaining  to  public  notices  for  events  or  bike  races  scheduled  to  occur  in  the  area.

Old  Business:

San  Mateo  County  Building  Permit  Policies:

No  response  to  date  from  the  County  or  Mr  Horsley.

Summer  BBQ/Car  &  Quilt    Show:

The  newer  take  on  one  of  our  traditional  events  was  a  complete  success,  despite  the  cool  and  windy  conditions.  We  acknowledged  that  more  thorough  organization  and  logistics  would  benefit  this  occasion.  Perhaps  the  car  and  quilt  show  component  should  precede  the  meal  so  as  not  to  detract  from  the  social  camaraderie.  There  should  definitely  be  an  element  of  music  to  add  to  the  ambience.  Suggest  other  “shows”  to  include  at  certain  annual  events  to  increase  appeal  and  attendance.  One  example  given  was  a  pet  show.  Kathy  Shubin  to  attend  the  Fire  Board  meeting  and  enquire  about  future  use  of  the  cook  shack.

PDF  Version  of  Membership  Packet:

The  KMA  Application  Form  has  been  completed  and  is  now  accessible  at  [email protected].

KMA  Membership  Drive:

The  letters  were  sent  out.  Eric  Soult  to  obtain  a  number  of  membership  packets  to  distribute  to  new  residents  in  the  area  that  call  on  his  business  and  retain  his  services.

We  cannot  get  assistance  from  the  County  or  State.  Someone  can  organize  a  team  via  the  Yahoo  group  to  clean  up  litter  on  the  mountain.  This  will  not  be  a  KMA  sponsored  event  for  liability  reasons.  Look  into  additional  approved  signage  along  Skyline  to  prevent  littering.

New  Business:

KMFB:

The  newly  appointed  Fire  Brigade  President  John  Frederickson  would  like  the  various  groups/organizations  to  join  together  in  the  endeavor  of  recruiting  more  volunteers.  Consider  exchanging  the  group  membership  lists  to  reflect  a  comprehensive  residential  candidate  listing.  It  is  a  serious  issue  to  maintain  the  Fire  Brigade  and  Community  Center  to  avoid  repercussions  on  home  values  and  insurance  costs  to  name  a  few.

The  KMFB  time  commitment  is  1  year  with  the  relevant  training  encompassing  80%  medical  and  20%  other  (fire  fighting  etc.).  This  volunteer  position  does  provide  an  alternate  career  prospect  and  potential  remuneration  for  those  who  successfully  complete  the  training.  There  is  a  water  tender  option.  All  boards  to  arrange  a  social  gathering  to  get  to  know  each  other  and  suggest  ideas  on  how  to  increase  exposure  and  recruit  more  volunteers  via  an  Open  House  event  or  KMFB  Appreciation  function  etc.

Re-‐introduce  KM  Groups  of  Interest:

Kristine  Schaefer  attended  the  meeting  to  suggest  the  reformation  of  additional  groups  and  new  events/forums  that  appeal  to  the  broader  community.  She  would  like  to  see  hiking  groups  of  various  fitness  abilities  to  meet  once  a  month  or  so  on  a  weeknight  (Wednesday  7-‐8:30pm)  and  weekend  morning  (Saturday  9-‐10:30am).  Use  local  knowledge  to  rate  the  various  trails  difficulty  level  and  time  to  complete.  Start  with  an  easy  1  hour  hike  to  assess  capabilities  of  participants.  Bev  Abbott  has  expressed  interest  in  getting  it  started  again,  Kristine  will  arrange  the  second  hike  and  then  to  hand  off  to  someone  who  regularly  attends.    The  important  benefits  are  both  physical  activity  and  boosting  social  ties.    Potential  to  explore  hike  themes  such  as  botany,  mushroom,  bird  spotting  outings.  Promote  via  the  KM  Yahoo  Group  and  the  ECHO.

Multi-‐Family  Garage  Sale:

Sheena  Mawson  endorsed  the  idea  of  holding  a  multi-‐family  garage  sale  at  the  Community  Center.  The  stall  fee  would  be  $20  to  cover  the  cost  of  the  dumpster  hire  for  any  unsold  items  no  longer  wanted  at  the  end  of  the  day.  Oragnize  for  Goodwill  or  similar  to  collect  any  items  they  would  like  by  the  end  of  the  day.  Schedule  in  conjunction  with  E  Waste/Docs  shredding  event  after  tax  time.

KMA  Event  Donation  Box:

Request  donations  of  household  items  and  utensils  to  store  and  use  at  our  events.

Next  Meeting  September  17,  2015  (no  objections  to  cancel  the  KMA  August  board  meeting  due  to  the  proximity  to  the  Art  Fair).

The  meeting  was  adjourned  at  8:01pm
