Attendance: Whole school attendance at present is 93%. YEAR 7 95% YEAR 8 94% YEAR 9 93% YEAR 10 92% YEAR 11 93% By now parents should have received medical evidence letters or attendance letters if their child’s attendance is less than 90%. If you have received a letter we will no longer authorise absences without proof of medical intervention. At present we have five students who have been fast tracked to prosecution for poor attendance. Please remember to contact me on 01553 779635 OR email me [email protected] if your child is going to be absent or late to school. If no contact is made you may receive a text message informing you that your child has not registered for school. Please remember to call in everyday if your child is absent from school. We can never assume that they are still absent due to illness. Mrs Roberts

Library: On the first Monday of the month the library plays host to The Wellbeing Club. Ladies from the ‘Children & Young People’s Health Services’ bring in doodle worksheets and special play-doh for students to play and relax with. The aim of the club is to promote emotional wellbeing. Students can experience how simple pleasures, like colouring in pictures can be very relaxing. It is a very friendly club where any general concerns can be openly discussed and shared. This week, as it was our first of the New Year, students discussed what they hoped to achieve in the months ahead. One student was hoping to eat more crisps! I tried to encourage them to take up the challenge of reading before bedtime as this can help switch the mind off and improve sleep quality, so they can achieve more!

We like to encourage students to read for pleasure as it does improve literacy. (It has been scientifically proven that children who read for pleasure achieve higher grades.) We stock a very wide selection of books in our library for children to choose from, so children should be able to find a book to engage their imagination! The library is open all day and all children have access to it during their break-times. So please ask your child what they are reading, as they should have a book that entertains them and if they do not they can visit the library to return it and borrow another one.

Swimarathon: The Priory Rotary Club are hosting a swimarathon on Saturday 8th February from 12pm until 8pm at Alive St. James pool. There is no entry fee and all sponsorship raised is in aid of Mind, Lavender Hill Mob and other local charities. Teams of six swim lengths of the pool in relays for 55minutes. Open to all ages and abilities. Visit prioryrotary.org.uk to register your team or contact Jonathan Holmes on 07944 036673 or [email protected]

School Transport: We have received notification of a road closure in Blackborough End that will affect school bus KLA1. The works are scheduled for 20th January 2020 for 3 days. The students who normally board at the stop on School Lane will need to walk to the bus stop on the Lynn Road, near the pub, and the bus will collect them from there.

Year 7 Round Up – Compiled by Mrs Germaney: We have had some excitement in Year 7 this week. Mrs Prevett announced it was time for the student commissioner applications to begin and it has created quite a buzz! I have seen students having conversations with staff about their references, as well as asking for advice on how to fill the forms in. Once they have all been collected Mrs Prevett will start to contact students that have been successful for the interview stage. Good luck to everyone that is applying, I can’t wait to see all of the new commissioners in their ties!

Year 7 main exams start next week on the 22nd and 23rd of January, some of the exams/assessment have been taking place in the classrooms, but the main exams will be in the hall, under normal exam conditions. Students will have to hand their phones in as they enter the room, which will be stored safely away, water bottles shouldn’t have any labels/writing on, these will also be removed as they enter. Students must come into the hall in silence, I will be there to guide and help them.

Letters went out last week for the History trip on 4th February, please ensure they have been completed and returned to school ASAP.

Year 7 Student of the Week nominations:

7AGA Kayla Legrove Consistently making correct choices around the school.

7SHR Jordan Maddern Jordan received a stonking 36 reward points since coming back this term and a praise postcard for her amazing effort in English!

7SMI Gracey Howard For always being eager in her art lessons and participating in form activities.

7AHI Amelia Hale At the end of last term Amelia did a very brave presentation to the tutor group about a health condition that she suffers with. It was very interesting and informative, and taught the tutor group (and me) a lot. Thank-you for sharing Amelia.

7RCL Lucas Goldsmith For quietly 'getting on' and doing his best all of the time.

7TWR Nikita Randall Thanks for volunteering to help with the Birthday Committee.

7ELA Braydon Griggs Braydon is always prepared, polite and willing to contribute to form discussions and activities. Keep doing your best Braydon!

I have decided to stop having an overall student of the week as I believe they should all be celebrated. With such brilliant nominations it is too hard to choose just one, so well done to you all, keep up the good work!

Have a great weekend, let’s hope it’s not too wet and windy!

Year 8 Round Up – Compiled by Mrs Doughty: We are well and truly settled back into the term, mince pies are now a distant memory!

I thought it would be lovely to focus on our Art/DT rotation this week, each Year 8 has a subject which they study intensively for 5 weeks. They have 4 lessons of that subject a week and in that time they have the opportunity to spend more time studying the curriculum and creating purposeful pieces of work.

In PSHE the students have been discussing resilience, and the meaning of this. Resilience is a skill that helps people recover quickly from difficulties, change or misfortune; to adapt to and overcome risk and adversity; to persevere and ‘bounce back’.

In Food Tech the students have been studying the function and goodness of the ‘egg’, this week students have been using egg to make a healthy version of the chicken nugget!

In Art the students are looking at Africa and surrealism. We have seen some fantastic African animals and masks being created. It’s lovely to see the calm creative side of our students.

Amazing examples below of their hand drawn African animals and Cubist art work.

In Information Technology the students are finding out how to research materials online. This week they have been looking into whether the Loch Ness Monster is real. It’s great to see them investigating for and against articles before them to form their opinions.

Of course everyone knows he exists though!

In Textiles and DT they have been discovering how to choose the right materials to make cushions and bird boxes. Each student starts with learning the health and safety rules of being in a workshop and using equipment correctly and safely before proceeding. They then go on to design their product, choosing how they are going to do this, investigating the materials to use and reflecting on the product afterwards.

8MST Gabrielle Clack For settling in well in her first week, and having a positive attitude within the form.

It has been a busy week here with Year 10’s sitting their exams, but one particular student has been through a test of his own! I am extremely proud to share with you all that on Tuesday Mrs May and Mrs Lockey accompanied Ben Seaman over to the College to take place in the second round of The Rotary Cooking competition. Ben impressed the judges with a 2 course dinner serving up his amazing Chicken and Mushroom Pie and a meringue nest for dessert…………….…He only went and WON round 2! Massive congratulations to Ben. Year 11 Round Up – Compiled by Miss McGivern:

Our whole school theme this week is: Owning my Actions.

We have had a busy week with the Rotary Mentors coming in to offer support to some students.

Today 20 high achieving students are representing KLA in the College of West Anglia University Challenge, wish us luck!

Top achievement points this week goes to Lewis Gant with 379 points.

Year 11 Student of the Week nominations from form tutors are:

11MDO Oliver Tickner Oliver is very hard working and polite.

11RES Brianna Stebbings The highest achievement points last week for 11RES, and no behaviour points. Brianna is always positive and respectful, and works hard in lessons.

11SBA Norkute Goda For being polite, mature and positive in form.

11JPE Elise Leigh Bell For continued hard work demonstrated by the huge number of achievement points she’s earned this year.

11DTO Alfie Twell He has shown a good attitude, and although a while ago, should be commended on results achieved in his mock exams. This is particularly the case for Science. The use of the revision app Tassomai has contributed to this and he now needs to maintain the same engagement with it as prior to the first set of mocks. Alfie is clear over what he wishes to do for the future and with hard work and perseverance there is no reason why he cannot achieve this.

11HCO Megan Golding Excellent effort across a range of subjects. 177 achievement points to date.

11ACT Evelina Kislovskaja By far the most reward points in our form, giving everyone else some good competition!

Well done to all students that were nominated and congratulations to Alfie Twell. Well done Alfie!

Just a reminder of the importance of attendance in Year 11, as we have seen a drop this term. A polite request that where possible all medical appointments are made out of school hours.

Also could I remind parents to regularly check students’ progress on Tassami, GCSE Pod, and Hegarty Maths.

Have a lovely weekend.
