COLLECTIONS AT SERVICES

Each Sunday morning we make a collection to support one of thecharitieswhichhavebeensuggestedbymembersoftheCollegecommunity. This term they are ‘STARS’, which provides bereavement counselling tochildren in Cambridge, and the Sant’ Egidio Community, which cares forthe poor and marginalised both in their home state, Italy (not least thegreat influx of refugees from across the Mediterranean), and elsewherein the world in some dangerous and desperately impoverished places.

Last term’s collections raised £848 for each of the two charities supported.

At all other services and at Saturday evening recitals, you are invitedto support the work of the Chapel and Choir by giving to the retiringcollection. Please use the envelope provided, including your details if youare a UK taxpayer, so that we can benefit from Gift Aid: this way thegovernment adds 25% to your donation. If you would prefer to makea donation at a later date, please either send a cheque to the Dean, theRevd Dr Stephen Cherry, King’s College, Cambridge, CB2 1ST; or [email protected] for information on ways to make significant orongoing contributions to our work.

JESUS WEPT

On Monday 22 February at 5.30 p.m. there will be a special sequenceof words and music that explores the spiritual significance of tears andweeping. King’s Voices will offer appropriate music and we will havereadings from writers such as Marjorie Kempe and John Donne as wellas from the Bible. Dr Thomas Dixon, a Non-Resident Member of King’sand currently of Queen Mary University of London where he is Director ofthe Queen Mary Centre for the History of Emotions, will give an addressbased on some ideas presented in his recent book ‘Weeping Britannia:Portrait of a Nation in Tears’ (OUP 2015).

SEATING IN CHAPEL

The top stalls in the choir area are reserved for members of King’sCollege and their guests. Members of the University are invited to makethemselves known to the Chapel staff and may be invited to sit in thesub-stalls.

RESTORATION OF THE CHAPEL ORGAN

The King’s College Chapel organ is undergoing the most significantrestoration since the 1960s. Today’s instrument remains fundamentallyas it was designed to be at the time of its rebuilding in the mid-1930s, butafter many years of frequent use it is becoming unreliable; major work isnow being undertaken to ensure that it continues to function optimallyfor the next generation.

The restoration will be carried out during the first nine months of 2016,and will involve the removal of almost all the pipework for cleaning andrepair. Work on the empty case in the Chapel will take place, includingcleaning, surveying and restoration. Choral services in the Chapel willcontinue, and the organ is expected to be ready for use again in September.

For more information about the organ and the restoration, please visitour website at www.kings.cam.ac.uk.

MUSIC

The Chapel organ makes its final contribution to this term’s ChapelServices on Sunday 17 January. In its place will be the Klop chamberorgan, a grand piano and a small pipe organ generously loaned to theCollege by Richard Wood. There will be a preponderance of early musicand a cappella repertoire, but some works will be performed with pianoaccompaniment insteadoforgan. TheSaturdayeveningorganrecitalswillbe replaced by a series of small-scale concerts by a variety of performerswhich has been devised by Tom Etheridge and Richard Gowers, OrganScholars. Another of the commissions in memory of the late MichaelBoswell (KC 1959) will receive its first performance – Judith Bingham’ssetting of Psalm 121. An instrumental ensemble will accompany the Choirat the Sung Eucharist on Sunday 31 January, Sunday 7 February, andEaster Day, 27 March.

This year sees the 12th Easter at King’s Festival. Details are given inthis booklet and on the College website. The liturgical celebrations ofHoly Week and Easter are complemented by a series of concerts featuringseasonal music together with talks and other events.
