KCUSD Educational Options

Welcome to Educational Options! You will discover that we offer a number of educational options from which to choose, opportunities for education and training beyond high school, and a staff who works hard to provide growth and encouragement to their students.

The mission of KCUSD Educational Options is to provide various opportunities for K-12 students seeking an alternative educational experience to engage in rigorous, standards based instruction in a school that fits their needs, ensuring all students reach their highest potential.

The vision of KCUSD Educational Options is to provide a variety of high quality, effective program options to meet the needs of all students, assuring opportunities for every student to achieve their highest academic potential and to develop graduates of both positive values and character. We strive to ensure that every student is prepared for success in a post-secondary school or job training program, career, and community.

The Kings Canyon Unified School District has five Educational Options programs.

Kings Canyon High School is a small continuation high school characterized by an individualized educational philosophy, smaller class sizes, and an attractive campus in the country. Teachers focus on building relationships with students while establishing high expectations for both behavior and academics. The primary purpose of Kings Canyon High School is to support students 16 and older in recovering credits to meet graduation requirements. Classes are also offered for 7th and 8th grade students at our Opportunity Program which is held at RHS and OCHS.

Mountain View School utilizes an independent study approach. Teachers meet with students one-on-one to discuss and support weekly assignments and to assess accomplished work. This school serves the needs of those students who are unable to attend school on a regular basis due to a documented medical condition or students that have extenuating needs which can be better served in an individualized program.

Dunlap Leadership Academy provides students the flexibility to learn at their own pace, engage in rigorous course work, receive help as needed, and prepares students for the future through the use of online learning. Students have access to a computer lab in Reedley, Orange Cove, and Dunlap as well as support from credentialed teachers as needed. Most of a student’s work can be accomplished from home online. We know that finding the right educational option is important. Dunlap Leadership Academy was created to fit who you are. The Dunlap Leadership Academy is a WASC accredited high school with UC approved A-G course offerings. DLA offers more than 90 online courses, California-credentialed teachers, and technology built specifically for online learning.

Reedley Middle College High School provides a bridge from school to college and/or career utilizing learning experiences and interests through access to Reedley Community College courses, internships and service learning projects. The mission is to assist students in the successful completion of high school while concurrently completing coursework that earns college credit. RMCHS is a WASC accredited high school with UC approved A-G course offerings for students.

Kings Canyon Adult School offers classes for adults and high school students who have attained senior status. Services are also provided for high school juniors in need of remediation and credit recovery. Most classes are held in the evenings, Monday through Thursday. A few classes are offered in the morning and afternoon. Classes are offered in Reedley, Orange Cove and Dunlap. The adult program offers high school diploma classes, English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, Vocational and Career Tech, and classes to meet community interests and needs. Adult Independent Study is also available.

For more specific information concerning the schools above, please do not hesitate to call each site with specific questions.

FOGGY DAY PROCEDUREDuring the foggy season the safety of our students is our first consideration. If conditions warrant, the district’s Transportation Department determines if the buses will be delayed. Generally this delays the bus pick-up by 1 ½ hours. The very best way to determine if a foggy schedule is in effect is to call 637-1324 (not the school) or tune your TV to channel 18 or 24 as they continually broadcast this information. Look for the Kings Canyon Unified School District information:

Plan A= Buses delayed 1 ½ hoursPlan B= Buses delayed 2 ½ hoursPlan C= Morning buses canceled, afternoon buses at regular time

Classrooms will be open at the regularly scheduled starting time for students who can safely walk to school or whose parents transport them to school. Please Exercise Extreme Caution When Coming To School. There is no change in the normal dismissal times.

Attendance Regular school attendance is the most important factor when considering student success. Students

cannot complete learning tasks and activities when absent. Being absent affects students ability to attain credits towards graduation. Students who habitually fail to attend run the risk of losing their placement at KCHS. All absences from school must be cleared.

The parent or guardian should call the school to report an absence. When calling, the parent or guardian should give the reason for the absence, estimated date of return to school, and request schoolwork, if desired. The school secretary calls parents the day(s) a student is absent for verification. When the student returns to school he or she should check in at the office, clear the absence and then attend class.**Tardiness

Prompt arrival at school is expected of all students. Late arrival disrupts class and causes loss of

instructional time. All tardies are reported to the parent or guardian.

**The provisions of the California Education Code Section 48260 state:

Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without valid excuse more than three days or tardy in excess of 30 minutes on each of more than three days in one school year is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district.

Failure of a pupil's parent or guardian to comply with school attendance laws will result in student being recommended to the Kings Canyon Unified School Attendance and Review Board (SARB) or recommended to a different education program.

*There is no 8th grade promotion ceremony in Educational Options.

CREDITSAt KCHS credits are earned by students attending school on a regular basis and successfully

completing assignments and passing assessments. At KCHS we have teacher directed instruction that is standard based with common assessments. A program of teachable units has been developed at KCHS. There are six teachable units per semester and each teachable unit is approximately three weeks in length. Students can earn one credit per class, per each teachable unit. However there are opportunities for students to earn more than one unit per class per teachable unit. Motivated students can enjoy great success at KCHS. This also means that students earn no credit for just attending and occupying a seat. If a student is choosing not to be productive an alternative placement to another program will be pursued for both KCHS and KC Opportunity students.

GRADESGrades are posted mid semester. The mid semester grades are considered progress reports and are

mailed home. The end of semester grades are mailed home and placed on an official student transcript. A student must post a passing grade to earn any credit. A total of 42 credits are expected each semester.

GUIDANCE SERVICESGuidance services are available to all KCHS students. The school staff is sensitive to individual

needs and encourages students to seek help when in need. These services include assistance with educational planning; interpretation of scores, occupational information; study tips; help with home, school,

13

Page 14: Kings Canyon High School - 1.cdn.edl.io€¦  · Web viewProviding services to students such as tutorial assistance, ... Carlos Caballero. KCHS Bell Schedules . ... or kind word

and/or social concerns; or any question the student may want to discuss with the counselor or student adviser. All avenues of service are made available to students, depending upon student needs.

Local and county agencies, district psychological services upon referral, private agencies, and community resources are also available to KCHS students. Our KCHS Social Worker/Counselor is available to students at scheduled times each week. The KCHS staff is also available and willing to assist in any way possible.

SCHOOL/HOME COMMUNICATIONCommunication is vital between the school and home. Efforts are made to involve and include

parents in our educational programs. Grades are mailed home, parents are solicited to attend back-to-school and open house functions each semester, each absence results in a call home, and home visits are not uncommon. Parents are contacted when positive events have occurred as well as when there are concerns of discipline or behavior problems. Continued difficulties result in parent/school staff conference. Support and input from parents is crucial to any student success at school. Any needs, concerns, or questions should be directed to the office.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICYThe administration, staff and parents of this school believe that the improved academic achievement of each student is a responsibility shared by the entire school community, including the school district, school, community members, school administration, staff, students, and parents (as defined for purposes of this policy to include guardians and all members of a student’s family involved in the student’s education). Parent involvement activities in the school will include opportunities for: • Parents to volunteer and be involved in school activities • Staff development and parent education • Parents to provide home support for their student’s education • Parents to participate in school decision-making • Effective communication between the school and parents

STUDENT ACTIVITIES Each semester outstanding students are selected to serve on student council. These elected

students meet periodically to help plan school activities - open houses, special occasions, student trips, student activities etc.

KCHS competes athletically with other schools in the area, and enters several tournaments each year. Volleyball, arm wrestling, mush ball, bowling and basketball are represented at KCHS.

The Cal-SAFE Program participants take several trips each year. Typical activities would include visits to the hospital, teen parent conferences, etc.

KCHS provides a full-day child care facility, the “Palma M. Freestone Kids Center” for the children of KCUSD students who are parents. The childcare facility is further supported by offering parenting classes to those students with children. This is part of the Cal-SAFE Program.

SCHOOL POLICIES Campus: KCHS is a closed campus. Students are to remain on campus during the school day.

Exceptions are made for doctor appointments, funerals, parent approved activities, etc. When a student leaves during the course of a day, he or she should be picked up by a parent or guardian and sign out at the office. KCHS should have prior knowledge of planned absences. All other KCUSD campuses are off limits during school hours unless there is prior approval by the site principal.

Comprehensive Sites: KCHS, KCOPP, and MVS students are not allowed on any other campus in the district between the hours of 7:30 am to 3:45 pm Monday through Friday. The only exception is those students who are participating in the ROP Programs and have, in their possession, a verified ROP ID Card. Failure to respect the closed campus policy and/or cause a problem on any KCUSD campus will result in a

14

referral with consequences ranging from loss of bus privileges and suspension to removal from the program.

Visitors: Any person coming on campus during school hours must first report to the office. Visitor passes are not issued to students to bring friends or relatives to school.

Transportation: Bus transportation is available to all students attending KCHS. Transportation to and from school is a privilege. All district rules and regulations are strictly enforced. Habitual disorderly conduct or refusal to submit to authority can result in removal from the bus. The district can refuse transportation with sufficient reason. Bus drivers are charged with student safety, and student cooperation is expected at all times. Students who ride a bus to Reedley and habitually fail to catch the bus to KCHS risk losing bus transportation altogether. Riding the bus is a reliable and safe way to come and go from school, although a student can choose to provide his or her own transportation. To do so requires permission from the KCHS office. For practical and insurance purposes, students who drive are restricted from transporting other students to and from school. Exceptions can be made with parent permission. Contact the KCHS office with questions or concerns about bus stops, times, or transportation in general.

Work Permits: Any student under 18 years of age who wishes to work must have a work permit. Employment without a permit can result in the employer being fined. Applications are available at the office.

Identification Cards: KCHS student identification cards are available upon request.

Habitual Truancy: Regular attendance is vitally important for any potential academic success. It is also an important part of learning personal responsibility. A habitually truant student risks their opportunity to attend KCHS and will be recommended to another educational option and program. There may also be law enforcement involvement and a referral to the court system where both parents and students will be held accountable according to the Compulsory Education Law.

Personal Property: KCHS is not responsible for the loss of personal belongings. For this reason, it is recommended that phones, MP3’s, DVD’s, radios, electronic games, headsets etc. should not be brought onto campus. These items also have the potential to disrupt school activities and events.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS (PBIS)

At Kings Canyon High School we want all students to have access to the most effective instructional best practices and behavioral interventions possible. Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a framework that guides selection and implementation of evidence-based behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for students. KCHS was most recently recognized by the Fresno County Office of Education as a Gold Level Model School in May of 2017.

PBIS is a preventative approach to working with students demonstrating behavior difficulties. The primary focus of PBIS at KCHS is to establish and teach rules, routines, and physical arrangements to prevent initial behavior incidents from occurring, rather than waiting for them to happen and respond. Our PBIS positive reinforcements for students include snack bar tickets, KC Cash, and incentive trips/events, to name a few. Students and parents appreciate that teachers care about student success and that they work to motivate students to stay interested and engaged in school.

Each month, the Wildcat PBIS team meets to discuss observations, surveys, and behavioral data and to action plan next steps to continuously improve behavior and overall academic success at Kings Canyon High School. The team consists of both certificated and classified staff, students, and parents. KCHS is committed to Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

KCHS staff and students demonstrate The Wildcat Way in all they do. We recognize that graduating from high school is not only about academics, but also about the development of strong character to prepare students for career, community, and college.

Each month, the Wildcat PBIS team meets to discuss observations, surveys, and behavioral data and to action plan next steps to continuously improve behavior and overall academic success at Kings Canyon High School.  The team consists of both certificated and classified staff, students, and parents.  KCHS

Six Steps to Resolving ConflictStep 1: Cool off.Conflicts can’t be solved in the face of hot emotions. Take a step back, breathe deep, and gain some emotional distance before trying to talk things out

Take a moment to brainstorm ten things that make you feel better when you’re hot under the collar. Consider some of the following: breathing deeply while making a calming statement, looking at the sky, clearing your desk or straightening up, splashing cold water on the face, writing in a journal, or taking a quick walk and then coming back to talk about the problem. Some people need physical release, while others need something quiet and cerebral. Determine what works for you, and then use it next time you get angry. Then you’ll be ready to go on to the next step.

Step 2: Tell what’s bothering you using “I messages.””I messages” are a tool for expressing how we feel without attacking or blaming. By starting from “I” we take responsibility for the way we perceive the problem. This is in sharp contrast to “you messages” which put others on the defensive and close doors to communication. A statement like, “You’ve left the kitchen a mess again! Can’t you ever clean up after yourself?” will escalate the conflict. Now take a look at how differently an “I message comes across: “I’m annoyed because I thought we agreed you’d clean up the kitchen after using it. What happened?”

When making “I” statements it’s important to avoid put-downs, guilt-trips, sarcasm, or negative body language. We need to come from a place inside that’s non-combative and willing to compromise. A key credo in conflict resolution is, “It’s us against the problem, not us against each other.” “I messages” enable us to convey this.

Step 3: Each person restates what they heard the other person say.Reflective listening demonstrates that we care enough to hear the other person out, rather than just focusing on our own point of view. It actually fosters empathy

Step 4: Take responsibility. In the majority of conflicts, both parties have some degree of responsibility. However, most of us tend blame rather than looking at our own role in the problem. When we take responsibility we shift the conflict into an entirely different gear, one where resolution is possible.

Step 5: Brainstorm solutions and come up with one that satisfies both people.21

Page 22: Kings Canyon High School - 1.cdn.edl.io€¦  · Web viewProviding services to students such as tutorial assistance, ... Carlos Caballero. KCHS Bell Schedules . ... or kind word

Resolving conflicts is a creative act. There are many solutions to a single problem. The key is a willingness to seek compromises.

Step 6: Affirm, forgive, or thank.A handshake, hug, or kind word gives closure to the resolution of conflicts. Forgiveness is the highest form of closure. Forgiveness means the freedom again to be at peace inside and to be glad in each other’s’ presence.

Just saying thank you at the end of a conflict, or acknowledging the person for working things out sends a message of conciliation and gratitude. We preserve our relationships this way, strengthening our connections and working through problems that arise.

BE PREPARED TO WITHHOLD JUDGEMENT. RECOGNIZE AND UNDERSTAND EMOTIONS, THEIRS AND YOURS.  PEOPLE LISTEN BETTER IF THEY FEEL YOU HAVE UNDERSTOOD THEM. DO NOT PUSH BACK. DON’T BLAME OTHERS FOR YOUR PROBLEM. JUDGMENT HINDERS IMAGINATION. SEPARATE PEOPLE FROM PROBLEMS. IF YOU WANT THE OTHER SIDE TO APPRECIATE YOUR INTERESTS, BEGIN BY SHOWING THAT YOU APPRECIATE THEIRS.

22

Page 23: Kings Canyon High School - 1.cdn.edl.io€¦  · Web viewProviding services to students such as tutorial assistance, ... Carlos Caballero. KCHS Bell Schedules . ... or kind word

LISTEN ACTIVELY. AN OPEN MIND IS NOT AN EMPTY ONE. Many creative agreements reflect the idea of reaching agreement through differences. Reason, and be open to reason. Deciding things on the basis of will is costly.

KINGS CANYON HIGH SCHOOL Classroom reminders

KCHS DISCIPLINE

Teacher/Student conflicts are handled with the Student Behavior Contract and the use of a mediation conference. Students are reminded of school rules. Students that are uncooperative and/or unsafe are sent out of the classroom and meet with administration, or staff to review the violation, get the help needed to change their behavior and prevent the conflict from happening again.

In order to maintain a quality-learning environment we have implemented these procedures. They are as follows:

Step 1 Student will conference with Teacher, parent notified by teacher, and Student Behavior Contract is signed by the student. Student may be obligated to serve time with teacher and/or campus beautification.

Step 2 Student will conference with Teacher and campus beautification will be assigned, parent is notified by teacher, and Student Behavior Contract is signed by student.

Step 3 Student is sent to the Administration, and a parent conference is set. There will be detention and/or suspension assigned. Student Behavior Contract is signed by student and parent.

Step 4 Student is sent to Administration. Parents will be notified that the student is on a 1-5 day suspension and may not return to school until parents have attended a meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to work out an acceptable education/behavior plan. Parents may be asked to pick up student ASAP following incident.

STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT (AB 2246).  Protecting the health and well-being of all students is of utmost importance in KCUSD.  In recent years the number of mental health practitioners (psychologists, social workers, counselors, interns, and contracted marriage and family therapists) in KCUSD has grown significantly so that student access to mental health professionals is widely available.   In 2017, the Governing Board strengthened the suicide prevention policy as per AB 2246, to help protect students through the following steps.

1)     Students in grades 7-12 will learn about recognizing and responding to warning signs of suicide in friends, using coping skills, using support systems, and seeking help for themselves and friends.

2)     Each school will have access to mental health professionals to serve as a point of contact for students in crisis and to refer students to appropriate resources.

30

Page 31: Kings Canyon High School - 1.cdn.edl.io€¦  · Web viewProviding services to students such as tutorial assistance, ... Carlos Caballero. KCHS Bell Schedules . ... or kind word

3)     When a student is identified as being at risk, s/he will be assessed by a school employed mental health professional who will work with the student and help connect him/her to appropriate local resources.

4)     Students will have access to resources which they can contact for additional support.5)     Students will be expected to help create a school culture of respect and support in which

students feel comfortable seeking help for themselves or friends.  Students are encouraged to tell any staff member if they, or a friend, are feeling suicidal or in need of help.

6)     Students should also know that because of the life or death nature of these matters, confidentiality or privacy concerns are secondary to seeking help for students in crisis.

(For a more detailed review of policy changes, please see the district’s full suicide prevention policy.)
