GOOD NEWS!

Based on recommendations from Pacifica Synod and King of King's Call Committee, the church has entered into an agreement with Pastor Timothy Eichler to become our pastor under a Three Year Term Call. We are excited to be able to take this step, using a somewhat different approach to the traditional calling of a pastor.

The Synod identified Pastor Tim as a uniquely qualified candidate for us. Given his situation--and ours-- they thought that the Three-Year Term Call concept should be applied here, since it allows us to take advantage of his availability without going through the lengthier process of a traditional Call.

So, what is a Three Year Term Call? Basically, the Synod calls Pastor Tim, and we make a three-year contract with him. After the first year. and anytime thereafter, we, as a congregation, can extend a Full Call to him. This gives us the chance to get to know each other well before making that important long-term decision.

Pastor Tim is a Captain in the Navy. He will begin with us half time, starting February 1 and will go to full time July 1, which coincides with his retirement. He lives in Escondido, so moving and relocation expenses are not required. (This eliminates one of the main obstacles in bringing a pastor into our rather expensive housing market area.) And, finally, with our proximity to Camp Pendleton, his experience should be extremely beneficial to our congregation in helping us reach out to the military community. (Pastor Eichler's bio follows.)

A reception to meet and greet the Pastor and his family is in the planning. Time and date will be determined, so look for announcements and please plan on attending. It has been a long journey and this is an exciting step for our future!

-- Peter Aadland, President Congregational Council

Pastor Tim Eichler comes to King of Kings Lutheran Church after serving on the Church's behalf as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy for 30-years. In August 2016 he was invited to address the ELCA Church wide Assembly on behalf of Federal Chaplains. As a chaplain he has served on aircraft carriers, with Marines at Camp Pendleton and Okinawa, and in the Pentagon. Lay Assistants and Lectors/Readers - We would like to also open up another area of service that you may be interested in. A Lay Assistant serves alongside the pastor as a worship leader, offering prayers and serving communion. Lay Lectors/Readers read the first and second Bible lessons during the service of worship. See either Howard Whitlock (first service) or Koni Robinson (Contemporary Service) to be put on the rotation.

Men’s Prayer Breakfast

Please join us on Wednesday, January 11th at 8:00 am in the back room at Grandma’s Restaurant, 539 Vista Bella, in Oceanside. Enjoy good food and discussion of John 1:29-42, the gospel reading for the following Sunday. All men are welcome!!

ESPECIALLY FOR WOMEN AT KINGS

CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY & FELLOWSHIP

January will begin a 2 month study of Paul’s letter to the Galatians. We will attempt to gain a clearer under-standing of faith in Christ alone as the heart of the Gospel. As Lutheran’s, this concept is not new but do we understand it completely? Also in the mix will be the relationship between Paul and the Christians in Galatia.

If you don’t already belong to a circle, and wish to join us for study, fellowship and usually a yummy dessert the leaders, their telephone numbers and the dates circles meet are as follows:

Lydia Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 1:00 pm Leader: Nancy Groth - 760-754-9646

Ruth Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 7:00 pm Leader: Faye Cieslinski - 760-690-2540

Naomi Circle: 2nd Tuesday of month @ 9:30 am Leader: Donna Miller - 760-433-2988

PIECEMAKERS

The history of quilts goes back at least a few thousand years. The ancient peoples of Russia, China and our own American Indians wore quilted cloth-ing for warmth. When the crusaders returned to Europe, they brought

home the idea of quilted fabrics. The Europeans soon adapted quilts for undergarments and sleepwear. And of course, quilted blankets were used on the beds by our colonists to keep warm. In modern times, quilts have become as much an art as it is a craft. Our quilters use their gift of quilting to give aid, comfort and love to those in need as a result of world catastrophic events; be it drought, deluge, earthquakes or wars. It is Jesus asking us to care for others, to see his face in the face of those hurting. Thank you quilters. We invite those of you looking for a cause to

join them each Thursday morning at 9 AM n TGP.

CALENDER – STANDING DATES

Bookies: The book selection for January is “March” by Geraldine Brooks. This is a Civil War saga. Brooks has taken the absent father from Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and has placed him in the war where his lofty principals are scorched by his failings during the war. This authoress is one of the best in historical fiction through her research and story telling. We meet in the church lounge January 23rd at 1 PM.

Past and UP COMING DATES

A Special Thanks: Thank you Loretta for arranging and coordinating the Christmas luncheon. From all reports, you should count it a success. From the fresh Caesar salad to the absolutely decadent chocolate cake, all were pleased. We know how much time, effort and creativity that goes into such a project. Thank you from all the women that attended.

January 7: We will have our annual Epiphany

Breakfast at 10 a.m. All are invited. You don’t have to be a mem-ber of a circle to attend. This is for YOU. It will be a time to celebrate. Did you know that this celebration has many names throughout history? You may know it as the 12th day of Christmas; or The Three Kings Day (we actually don’t know how many kings were there but we do know there were 3 gifts), or the Baptism of Jesus. In any event, it is a completion of the Advent season to be celebrated.

Bring your favorite Christmas ornament to hang upon our communal tree. This is temporary, you will get the ornament back after the celebration. If you wish, you may tell us why it is your favorite. This celebra-tion starts our new year and is a chance to share memories and perhaps ideas for the new year. Bring a friend.

Support Fair Trade

Support Fair Trade and help small farmers and craftsmen all over the world support their families!

You can purchase Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, tea, & cocoa at King of Kings! Find one of the two self-serve kiosks in the narthex hall outside the church office or in the Gathering Place.

InferFaith Shelter Happy New Year to every-one! As I write this article, we are eagerly anticipating Christmas. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior, there is so much to do! Gifts to be bought, decorations to be hung, and parties to attend, etc.. Then

we celebrate the New Year, and of course, Epiphany. But let’s take a look at the circumstances surrounding the birth of Jesus, focusing on the Nativity scene. It took an angelic visit for Joseph to decide against discreetly ending his betrothal to Mary because she was “with child”. Joseph and Mary had a harsh journey to Bethlehem. The only lodging available was in a stable, so Jesus was born where the livestock lived. And after the visit of the Magi, the family had to flee into Egypt to avoid the Massacre of the Innocents. Yes, Jesus was homeless for part of his young life. If you follow the news at all, you’ll see that there are too many people in the world today, homeless and in harrowing living situations. On Sunday, January 15, (through January 29) we start our stint as hosts of the Interfaith Shelter Network. We’ll be receiving up to 12 people. The families have been screened and admitted to the program because they are likely to succeed in getting back on their feet if some of their worries (a place to live, for example) are taken care of. We have a great chance to make a difference in the lives of our guests. As of this moment, we don’t have the support of an LDS congregation, as we did in the past. I’m asking the people of King of Kings to prayerfully consider what gifts they have to offer. We need volunteers to set up, welcome the guests, to provide meals, and to stay overnight. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can sign up at both services, and you can always reach me at (760) 271-4490, and [email protected].

Talked with Pastor Tim Eichler and Pastor Terry Tuvey-Allen, from the Synod, regarding an agreement to have Pastor Eichler serve a Three Year Term Call from the Pacifica Synod. Pastor Eichler had been recommended by the Synod and the King of Kings Call Committee. Terms of the agreement had been negotiated by the Executive Team and agreed to by Pastor Eichler. Council reviewed the document and voted to have the agreement signed by the President and the Secretary.

Clarification from November's meeting to allow the allocation of the Garmin Funds to be used for maintenance projects.

Finances are tracking as per predictions and budget.

A slight increase in the 10:30 attendance was noted.

Marketing efforts and flyers were produced to promote "All About That Baby."

Cracked tiles have been replaced around the baptismal font.

It was suggested that we have a detailed asset list prepared next year, as it has been awhile since one was completed.

The Draft 2017 budget was reviewed and some minor adjustments will be made by Treasurer, Don Miller and the Finance Committee prior to the Annual Meeting.

It was reported that we have received 44 pledges, totaling $189,000.

Reminder to Committee liaisons that annual reports are due to the church office by January 15th.

Personnel Committee will begin to conduct a search for a new Music Director. The job description will be reviewed and altered if needed.

ALL ABOUT THAT BABY WAS A HUGE, LOVE-FILLED,

ADORABLE SUCCESS!

The King’s Players, consisting of nearly 40 members and friends of King of Kings, put on a delightful show for the community, December 17 and 18, when they took to the stage to present All About That Baby, a “sheepishly clever story about a bunch of sheep, a bunch of shepherds, and one very special Baby.” It was an ambitious production, with acting, singing and dancing by talented performers ranging in age from 3 to 70. Kudos to everyone involved:

The Creative Team: Elaine Aadland, who wrote the script and directed the production; Julia Huff, music director; JoAnn Crawley, production manager, who costumed the entire company; Mindy Stewart, choreography; Glenn Groth, who created the set, complete with shining star and burning campfire.

The Performers: Whit Aadland (Bellwether, the head sheep); Lauren Aadland (the shepherd Jody); Toni Jaime, Jacob Bowman and Samuel Cadavid (young shepherds Bekah, Nate and Seth); Peter Aadland and Steven Huff (sheep-hands Zeke and Jed); Deniell Hornyak (Mary); Jordan McKinley (Joseph); Corina Krause (the villager Judith, and Angel Gabby); Rebekah Cadavid and Faye Cieslinski (Innkeepers Abby and Bertha); DJ Jaime (the Lost Sheep); VILLAGERS/ANGELS: Nancy Clancy, Sandy Darrow, Julia Huff and Diane Robertson; LITTLE SHEEP: Benjamin Cadavid, Beck Hardy, DJ Jaime, Myka Lema; LITTLE ANGELS: Addison Armean, Brooke Bowman, JoJo Hardy and Sela McKinley.

The Crew: Behind the scenes, these folks worked their magic: Jeremy Grasz (sound); Jeff Grasz (lighting); Robert Johnson (lighting assistance); Howard Whitlock (set construction and stage assistance); Owen Corso (stage assistance); Diane Robertson (makeup); Lauren and Lisa Halling-Aadland (photography and videography).
