Sharing Our News A Wealth of Opportunities

I was wondering why the last few days have been so busy. The

pace has definitely picked up as is typical of mid Term 2. The

reason for this is the many extra-curricular opportunities that King

Street offers our students in addition to our core business of

Literacy and Numeracy. At times balance can be quite a

challenge.

Students are warming up for the winter athletics season

PSSA sports have started with many of our teams through

to the second round

The sport committee is getting the school athletics carnival

organised – keeping in mind we will run the zone carnival

this year (on the same day as Cracker Night!)

Start Struck is in its final rehearsal phase. This year we

have more students participating as we combine with

Mt Pleasant for an item as well as our own.

Eisteddfod items, debating and spelling bees are being

prepared for at this time of year

Our Hunter GATS (gifted and talented) camp students are

preparing for their adventure

Our Leadership Team are heading to their student

conference and the Galuwa Scholarship hub is underway

University of NSW competitions have begun

Fundraisers are being coordinated by the School Council

students

Add to that – the P&C are starting to organise Cracker

Night

There are sure to be things I’ve missed. Is it any wonder we are

rushing by each other at the moment?

Have a great week

NATIONAL WALK SAFELY TO

SCHOOL DAY Friday 24th May is Walk to School Day. We encourage all parents to walk to school with their children so that children are supervised and shown the safe way to school. As children arrive they will be given a sticker (until they run out) and they may have toast and/or a piece of fruit for breakfast. Any parents willing to help with buttering and spreading toast would be appreciated. Please let Mrs Stretton, Mrs Fishpool or Mrs Burgess know. STAGE 1 HISTORICAL MUSEUM EXCURSION

The walking excursion will now be held next

Tuesday 28th May. All classes will be leaving at the

same times they had last week. Permission notes

will be carried forward so if there are any parents

who are now unable to attend please notify your

CANCER COUNCIL CAKE STALL Each year the King Street School Community participates in the Cancer Councils “Biggest Morning Tea”. Tomorrow Thursday 23rd May we will be holding a cake/slice & toffee stall. We are asking for donations to be sent to school on this day & taken to Mrs Kermodes’ classroom. Monetary donations can also be made at the office. Please include a list of ingredients as we do have some students with allergies to nuts etc. Thank you for your anticipated support for this worthwhile fundraiser. Kerry Kermode.

EVACUATION & LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

The school has evacuation and lockdown

procedures in place to ensure the safety of students,

staff and visitors. A “whoop” sound indicates an

evacuation a flat “beep” indicates a lockdown.

We would ask that parents/visitors who are on the

school site during these times adhere to our

Emergency Management Plan.

In an evacuation we would ask you to move to the

Assembly Area on the main oval. During a

lockdown we would like you to move into the nearest

classroom.

At these times, signs are placed on our gates

informing people which procedure is happening. We

would ask that you follow the directions on these

signs as the safety of everyone is very important to

us.

Thank-you for your cooperation.

REMINDER At King Street

School we have a policy endorsed by

the WHS Committee (Work, Health, and Safety) that no

animals are to be on school grounds.

The only exception would be if they are brought in for

“Show & Tell” and taken home immediately after by

parents. It has been noted that some parents are

bringing dogs to school with them when dropping and

collecting children. We would ask that these parents

cease this practice for the safety of the children at our

school.

Great Talent at Writing Enrichment Day

On 7th May, 24 lucky year 3 and year 5 students participated in our Writing Enrichment Day. These students worked

through a variety of sessions on the day to enhance their writing skills. They were benefited on the day by lessons from

Mrs Hovey, Mrs Barry, Mrs Hawkins and Mrs Larkman. One of their activities was to describe the following picture after

studying the description pattern of another quality text. Please enjoy a sample of their work…

We looked and there was an egg. We looked at it for a while. It was getting boring. But then the colourful printed egg

started vibrating and making little whistle sounds and then a huge crack split the egg exactly in half. Then all of a sudden it

opened and a beautiful big grown tiger like animal came out of it. We were interested as the egg was so colourful yet the

monster inside was chocolate brown. Then we heard a huge squeal. It was like someone scraping their nails against a

chalkboard, but right at my ears! Then I saw it- the huge shadow but when I looked up there was nothing there, not a piece of

fur, nothing. But then I looked down. I saw it. It was a small creature. It looked harmless. But I realised it was focussed on

the new born brown tiger thing. Then it pounced and ate the tiger in one mouthful! I was mistaken with cute and vicious.

Then it went up to Bob. Its teeth were covered with neon green blood. It was about a centimetre away then it started rubbing

against his leg. I thought I would pick it up. I found out it was a boy. It wasn’t pretty. Yuck! Its eyes are bright yellow

with vertical pupils, its fur was half pink half brown, and its wings were tiny. It was amazing how it could fly since its wings

were about a tenth of its size. It has a donkey-like head, a lion’s body and an eagles wings but a lot smaller. It was kind of

love at first sight in a pet way- so I thought I should keep him.

Jude Yr 5

Molly kept walking through the haunted forest. It was out of Molly’s comfort zone, walking through a haunted forest.

Darkness was descending on the vast, dark land. Down in the underground it was cold, and eerie noises whistled through

the grave-like forest. Molly could smell rotting flesh mixed with ash from the burning fires. She looked up and saw dark,

dying crows and could hear them squawking in their back tingling voices. Then out of the darkness ran a creature! Molly

stopped in her tracks.

She looked at the creature. Suddenly she didn’t feel so lonely anymore. The creature had little turquoise wings and a long

purple tail. The creature had paws like a pink baby dragon. Its eyes were slitted and black. Molly looked closer at the little

dragon. She saw a peachy face with a big human like nose, sharp black claws and a lavender coloured body. She picked up

the creature and looked it in the eyes and put it down. The little dragon ran away…

Piper Yr 5

The triangular egg was standing straight on the floor, bluer than the sea. No cracks were in the

egg, no movement. The room was as silent as a graveyard. Everyone was staring at the egg, waiting.

In a split second the egg turned ruby red and stayed that way for an hour, then changed colours

rapidly. A creature popped out. It was covered in black. We washed it and it looked like a

rainbow. It had the nose of a koala, wings of an eagle and claws of a lion.

TERM 2 | WEEK 4

Rolling around on the table was a smoky grey egg. Then it stopped for about five seconds. Then the

creases started glowing.

CRACK! A crack formed straight through the middle. Hundreds of cracks started to form. Nothing

happened until I heard a noise a lion cub would make.

There, helpless, was a little thing lying on the table staring at me with big rainbow eyes. It had a lion’s

body with feathered wings. The nose was slightly round and puffy. The claws were pitch black and

scratching at the table. The fur was silky and soft. On the end of the tail was rough and scratchy like a

man’s beard.

Amber Yr 5

The egg was lying on the table. There were little cracks in it. Something was moving inside. A weird humming noise

was coming out of it.

They all dragged their seats up to the table and stared at the egg with their mouths right open.

All at once there was a hatching noise and the egg split open. The baby dragon jumped onto the table. It wasn’t

pretty really. It was weird. It was like a yellow colour. It had black, shiny wings, big nostrils, horns on its big fat head

and wide open green eyes. It made a strange screaming noise and it smelt really disgusting.

Isabella Yr 3

The egg was half-buried in the sandpit. We dug it out with the plastic spoon. One half was white and the other

was a browny-blackish colour with little Chinese signs all over the white side. My friends and I just stared at it.

They all watched in awe as the egg began to glow. It got brighter and brighter and brighter until the egg cracked!

A small furry animal came out. It had two small wings, a short, wiggly, fluffy tail, an enormous nose and a very

cute smile. My friends started arguing over what we should name it. I picked him up and cradled him and said,

“His name is Bloggy.”

Tariya Yr 3

The egg was lying on the lounge. At first the egg moved a little to the left and I thought it

was going to fall off. But then it cracked. I started to get butterflies in my tummy. Then it

cracked even more down the middle. I went and told my mum and dad. When I got back

the egg was cracked open.

They looked a little startled. We had no idea what animal it was. It was fat, cute, had tiny

wings and it looked like a griffin.

All at once me, mum and dad looked at each other and thought about where it could have

come from.

Cracker Night 2013

At the P&C meeting on Monday night plans came

well under way for this year’s cracker night, as it will

be here before we know it!

We would like to ask that all parents/carers put the

2nd August in their diaries so you are able to attend,

and hopefully help out at, this fantastic event. This

evening raises in excess of $10,000 each year for

our school, and as a result we are able to purchase

many valuable resources for your children.

We would also like to get an early indication of

volunteers available. Any help would be much

appreciated, whether you would like to help co-

ordinate a stall or help serve for an hour. Please fill

out the form below and return to the office.

Thank You

Would like to say a big thank you to Scott Jones

from Singleton Carpet Court for donating carpet

squares for a job that needed doing in a couple of

our classrooms.

Thank You Kindly

Some of 6K's Embarrassing Moments and Fondest Memories

My favourite memory was in year 4. I visited Bali. We stayed at an amazing resort with palm trees and a bar in the pool, a 45 metre water slide, room service and more. It was my favourite memory because I spent time with my family and learnt things. My favourite was getting my feet nibbled on by the little fish and eating new foods and most of all meeting new friends. Millie

My most embarrassing moment When I was a baby I was sneaky and wobbled out the backdoor to the park across the street. I loved going on the playground, so I wobbled up the slide and on top of the playground. A nice lady took me home by that time mum was out the front waiting Luke

My most embarrassing moment When I was 6 years old I went to a party and mum said it was a pool party. Mum told me to get in and I dacked myself because I thought I had my swimmers on, but I didn’t. Tamika

My most embarrassing moment When I went to a sport carnival I was about 6. I got my new sport shoes and from the moment the race started I was running and looking at my shoes thinking how awesome I looked. When I got to the finish line I thought I had come first but I came last. Ethan

My favourite memory My favourite moment was when I travelled from Townsville to Singleton. It was my favourite memory because it was a great experience to see towns that I didn’t even know existed or wanted to see, even though travelling made me sick , it was exciting to see lots of places in Australia. Kaelyn

My favourite memory My favourite memory was when I went to Queensland. My family and I went to Dreamworld and White Water World. It was so much fun, we stayed in a cabin. When we went to White water world it was lots of fun but very cold. Bella

My Favourite Memory My favourite memory would have to be when my cricket team PCH won the under 13's grand final I like this memory because I contributed to win the game. I also played well and got good batting and bowling figures. Alex

My Most Embarrassing Moment When I was a year and a half old my brother put me in his santa pants, I fell through one of the legs and I fell out of the pants. My mum and dad came to get me, when my mum pulled me up my pants were stuck on the clip so they fell down. Mum walked me to my aunties house with no pants, so every person in the street looked out the window. Katelin

My Most Embarrassing Moment My Most Embarrassing Moment was when I accidentally locked my kitten in the fridge. I have a fridge in my room, one night I got up to have a drink of milk and go to the toilet when I shut the door the cat was in the fridge. I went back to bed, when I got up I opened the fridge because the cat was meowing and it scratched me. Bow

My Favourite Memory My Favourite Memory is when I got Fang from the Reptile Park. We went to the Reptile park for Haydens birthday. We all got to get a souvenier and thats when I got Fang. Slayter

My Embarrassing Moment My Embarrassing Moment was at my friends house and my friends sister and my sister threw me outside naked with only a pillow to cover my parts. I was out there sitting on the gutter for half a hour then I went inside walking around trying to find my clothes. Kyal

Term Reflection

By Tamara D 5/6H

Good morning Mrs Hovey and fellow students. Today I’m

going to tell you my most favourite time in Term 1

between when school started and now.

It would be the time I was picked out for Mrs Hovey’s

class. I was very nervous about it. My family was with

me that day and Dad was funny, hilarious and just good

to hang around with. Kaylee found me and my family as

well. We were just hanging around talking about what

happened at Christmas, the weekend and term holidays.

It was time and that’s when I said, “Please be a good

teacher!” in my head. Then the classes and teachers

were called out, then Mrs Hovey for my very last year at

King St Public School.

Then out of nowhere Dad was giving Kaylee and I funny

faces. Kaylee and I cackled. It was hilarious. Then I said

to my family and Kaylee, “Here goes another year.” Well

my last year at school with little kindergarten people, year

1, year 2 looking up at us to do the right thing. Now I said

to Kaylee, “That’s scary!”

I was hoping that at least one friend would be in m y class

and there was. But more than one actually: Kaylee,

Lynsey, Amy, Nicole and many or heaps more.

Now I am wondering what I was afraid of. Class 5/6H is

probably the best class I have had. I don’t even think

they can hurt a fly at all! Now if you ask me what was my

favourite moment, it would be when I was picked for 5/6H.

Trampoline Competition Cameron M. 4B On Friday Cameron M travelled to Sydney to compete at the Elite State Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. On Friday night he had Tumbling and placed second. He was up early Saturday morning for another day of competition. He placed 1st in Double Mini Tramp and is now the NSW State Champion for Double Mini Tramp. He had just started to learn Synchronised Tramp 3 weeks ago with Flynn and they did extremely well placing third. Cam then had his Trampolining routine to do and did very well placing second. Cameron has qualified for Nationals but his coach wishes to hold off with that until he is a little older. All competitors did so well and looked amazing. They should all be very proud of their efforts.
