Staff Changes We would like to thank Mrs Meg Bowman most sincerely

for teaching 4/5B for 3 terms replacing Mr Beh. Mrs

Bowman has chosen to return to day to day casual

teaching in Term 4 and Mr Tim Phelan will be available to

take this class. Tim worked on 4B in Term 4 last year.

Mr Beh's resignation will be effective on the 20th of

October. We greatly appreciate his contribution to King

Street Public School.

Week 9 - 11 September 2013

Sharing Our News

National Curriculum Due to the role-out of the new English curriculum in 2014, the

Federal government have given schools a budget for planning an

effective program for classroom learning. Teams of teachers are

scheduled to plan and begin programming this week and next.

For this reason your class teacher may be off class 2-3 days over

the fortnight to write a school-wide scope and sequence as well as

program for different stages of learning. This curriculum is quite

different to our current one. Our teachers have participated in

online training sessions throughout this year, and it is now time to

get working programs into place.

Your class teacher will still be at school and available should there

be any need for the visiting teacher to consult with them.

Thank you for your understanding.

Leadership Course I will be participating in a leadership course on the 16th, 17th and

18th of September in Sydney. Because I am required to have my

mobile phone and email turned off for both day and night

sessions, there will be an Assistant Principal relieving for me each

day. As is usual, your class teacher is your first port of call and

then the stage supervisor for routine matters. They have the

privilege of knowing your child the best.

Annual Reporting As part of our annual improvement cycle we will again be

conducting surveys with parents. One of the surveys we will

gather feedback on this year is for our review of our anti-bullying

policy. This policy is reviewed every few years in public schools

and it is time for ours to go through this process. These surveys

will be distributed randomly across all classes as there will be

another type of survey being distributed in Term 4 which will go to

other parents. If you do not receive one but would like to, please

let the front office know. We ask that you comment on our best

practice programs as well as our areas for improvement so we

know which programs to continue with and dedicate our time to.

Boys Soccer 2013 – End to another great year.

Last Monday our wonderful run of victories, at a local

Hunter level, took us on the “road to the finals” section of

the draw. We had a day of soccer at Thornton. We

played Thornton Public School firstly, which we won. It

was a tough match, against a fast and most capable

team, but we held them off and headed into extra time. In

the end it came down to corners, of which we won.

Then we played Narrabri Public School. What a great

match against a fantastic group of sportsmanlike boys.

Unfortunately we lost this match 1 - 0. All our KSPS boys

played very competently and with lots of energy the whole

day. Our “fearless goalie”, Elliott E, once again deferred

a volley of attempts at goals and even held off a penalty

shot. (Maybe it was his ‘spiderman’ antics that put the

striker off!!??)

We have again been most fortunate to receive coaching

from Simon Kelly. His devotion to our team, and passion

that he brings to the sport for our boys, is so inspiring.

We all thank Simon for a fabulous year in 2013. Also we

have had a devoted, supportive and occasionally ‘loud’!

group of parents and friends who have come to our

matches and certainly demonstrated positive

encouragement and sportsmanship towards both teams.

Thank you very much, as we could not continue without

your help.

Headlice

Headlice is an ongoing problem in all schools.

Children who have headlice are not able to be

excluded from school so we rely on parents treating

their children straight away so the headlice does not

spread to the whole class. Unfortunately some

children seem to get headlice more often than others

and it becomes very expensive for these parents to

keep treatments up.

How to Treat Headlice

The best treatment is to saturate the scalp with

conditioner and leave for an hour or so the longer

the better. Then comb through with a nit comb and

remove as much of the lice and eggs and possible.

Wipe/wash the comb in between combing into an ice

cream container ( preferably a white one so you can

see them and keep changing the water ). Repeat till

the comb is clean and you are no longer getting

anything on your comb . After the hair is dry run

through with a hair straightener this will kill any left

behind. Then check regularly.

School Council Seeks Builder

King Street Public School Council would like to

consult with a builder/tradesperson who would be

able to advise on the construction of a large sign at

the front of our school. If you are interested or know

of someone we can contact for this purpose, please

contact the front office.

Our lost property box is overflowing with lost items. If

your child has misplaced a garment please come in and

see if it’s in the lost property box.

Meeting of the Minds

‘Meeting of the Minds’ began as a weekly activity set by Mrs Mullen and her Year 10 Rollers class from

Singleton High School. Several schools took part including Hunter Street, Singleton Heights, Rutherford

and Branxton. Each week, for 10 weeks, the teams had challenging maths questions to complete in 30

minutes. Their best 8 scores were tallied to find a winner.

Each team could have up to six students who were chosen by their class teacher as they had shown they

were gifted or talented in Literacy or Maths.

On 3rd September, all the teams met at Singleton High School and under the watchful eye of the year 10’s,

participated in tasks in Engineering, Science, Literacy, Sport, Creativity, Maths and General Knowledge.

The Blue Tongues – 6K. (Zachary H, Katelin P, Ethan H, Tristin P, Luke J)

On the 3rd of September Luke, Tristin, Ethan, Zachary and I went with Mrs Maher to the Meeting of the Minds day at Singleton High School. First was the engineering challenge. We had to build a house. Next was the sport challenge. Luke and Tristin did that. After the sport challenge was morning tea. We were allowed a piece of fruit and a popper. After morning tea was the science challenge. Luke and Tristin did that one as well. Next was the English challenge. Luke and I did that. Then there was lunch. We had a salad wrap and another popper. Then there was the general knowledge challenge. Luke did that. Next was the creativity challenge. We had to tie knots in ropes. Then we had to clean up in time for the presentation. The Blue Tongues came second out of the whole day. Tristin’s favourite part of the day was the sport challenge. Ethan’s, Zachary’s and Luke’s favourite was the general knowledge. Empire – 5/6H Meeting of the Minds

On the 3rd of September three groups of six year sixes went to the high school, to complete 7 activities set

by the year 10 students. Our group (“Empire”) particularly enjoyed the engineering challenge. What

we had to do is build a house that could keep warm air out. Our materials were a cardboard box, foil,

bubble wrap, sticky tape and plastic cardboard. It was lots of fun and we all enjoyed it.

The Penguin Empire – 6M Meeting of the Minds

On the 3rd of September the 3 meeting of the minds teams walked over to the high school. We waited until the

competition started. Firstly we went and sat at our own table for the day. The first challenge was very hands on

where we had to make a house out of cardboard, aluminium foil and bubble wrap using scissors and sticky tape,

we had to keep the cold in and the heat out. This was Dylan’s favourite challenge.

We had 2 more tricky challenges and then recess (lunch), the cupcakes were delicious, and we also had wraps

and poppers. We enjoyed the yummy wraps and delicious chocolate crackles.

One of the easiest challenges would have to be the Sport challenge where we had to answer different questions

about different sports which some we had no knowledge of. This was Harlan’s favourite part because we had to

answer a lot of questions about sport.

The last challenge would have to have been the most hands on challenge of them all, it was a creativity

challenge where we had to create 4 different knots shown to us in instructions given to us.

Unfortunately in the end of the day the Penguin Empire of 6M wasn’t awarded with any fancy medals, we only

left with participation certificates. We went back to our school where we got our photo taken with the 3 teams

like we were famous!

Year 6 Pie Drive

The Year 6 children of King Street Public School are

holding a pie drive to raise money towards the Year 6

present to the school as well as contribute towards the

cost of the Year 6 Farewell. Please find attached the

order form for the pie drive. Orders and payment may be

left at the school office by 19th September 2013. The

delivery date will be 16th and or 17th October, depending

on the total size of the order.

They may be collected from the school hall on the

delivery date.

Dubbo/Bathurst Excursion Recount

Hi I am going to tell you what the Stage 3 students did on the Dubbo/Bathurst Excursion.

All of the Stage 3 students who went on this excursion woke up early to get to school

and hop on the bus. When we got on the bus we drove to a little park area where we

could eat our snacks and have a drink.

So back on the bus and we drove straight to Dubbo and we had our second meal which

was lunch. Then we walked over to the Dubbo Museum and looked at the fantastic old

machines they used to use and the clothing they wore and shoes that were tiny and

really cool. Then we visited to an old school classroom and it was extremely different to

what they look like now.

Then we travelled to the old Dubbo Gaol and it was pretty cool but a little freaky. The

man that toured us around the gaol was funny and he told us all of the weird things that

the prisoners would do and strange places they escaped at.

After we finished the tour around the Dubbo Gaol we found out where we would sleep

for the night. So we got all of our luggage and went into the cabin and we were

allocated to a room to sleep in. Then we found our rooms and picked our beds for the

night. It was pretty late when we turned up so we had dinner and our showers and went

to bed. Some of the cabins were awake for ages including mine. We fell asleep at

probably 3.00am in the morning but we were supposed to go to sleep at 9.00 at night.

The next morning we woke up at 4.30am to have a shower and we had to go to the zoo.

So we walked on a 5km tour of the Dubbo Taronga Western Plains Zoo and we saw a

lot of new different animals and funny things they did. We finally had breakfast, toast

and cereal. Eventually we drove around the zoo on the bus and saw a few more

animals.

We drove to Wellington and climbed into the caves. It was extremely exciting and there

were a lot of cool things in the caves. We made thunder by being really quiet and

making a fist and hit our chest. Then we went over to the little water fountain and the

water was really cool. It was really Hawaiian colour.

Back on the bus to Bathurst and it was a long trip but we eventually travelled safely.

4 We arrived at the Bathurst accommodation and we had our camp fire talk. We had to

set some rules for the time we were there. Then we ran to our rooms and picked our

beds and put our luggage down. Afterwards we played soccer over at the fields. 120

kids had dinner which was delightful and then we went and watched a lot of funny skits

and went to bed at our allocated times.

We had all awoken and ran straight to the Sheep and Cattle Drome. It was really funny

and the cattle were really smart knowing where to go straight away.

After this we drove around Mount Panorama and went to the goldfields. Firstly our

group walked around and looked at what they used to use when they went panning. I

found gold and when I found gold I yelled EUREKA. Then we went into the little room

they had in the goldfields. It had all of the gold found.

We got on the bus and drove to The 3 Sisters. It was very interesting and very windy.

Back on the bus, we drove to Mc Donald’s and ate dinner. Eventually we drove back

home and arrived at school at 9pm.

Keeping Our Kids Safe

Thank you to all those parents and carers who

continue to use Sussex Street carefully when

dropping off and collecting their children. At King

Street it is of high importance to us that we keep all

your children safe.

We continue to have a few motorists who appear to

be unfamiliar with the RTA signage and laws, so we

ask all motorists to be particularly aware of the

following:

There is no parking in the School Drop

off/Pick up zone during the allocated ‘kiss

and drop’ times.

‘No Stopping’ signs indicate no stopping at

any time. These are generally in the more

high risk areas.

Motorists must not leave their car when

stopping in the School Drop off/Pick up zone.

The area immediately outside the

Kindergarten gate is not to be used to drop

off children. This is a ‘No Stopping’ area.

It is illegal to drop off or pick up children in

the middle of the road.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our

kids road safe.

REMINDER At King Street School we

have a policy endorsed by the WHS

Committee (Work, Health, and Safety)

that no animals are to be on school grounds.

The only exception would be if they are brought in

for “Show & Tell” and taken home immediately after

by parents. It has been noted that some parents are

bringing dogs to school with them when dropping

and collecting children. We would ask that these

parents cease this practice for the safety of the

children at our school.

A panel will select a team of up to 14 players from each age group. Under 10s will be 12 players selected.

Information for Players The teams will attend 2 carnivals and then attend the Junior State Cup in Port Macquarie.

On selection into a team a non-refundable deposit of $100 will

be required to be paid by 10th November. Or selected players position will be given to someone else.
