Week 10 – 11 December 2013 ‘Students are at the centre of what we do. Our goal is to improve education

and learning outcomes for all students’.

These words are at the beginning of the Hunter Central Coast Regional

Strategic Plan and very much drive the targets of King Street Public School.

2013 has seen a continued focus on our targets of Literacy, Numeracy and

Engagement. Embedded in each of these targets is the Quality Teaching

Framework which guides us in the day to day art of teaching itself. Our staff

has also spent significant time planning and preparing for the new National

English Curriculum which is mandatory from next year. We were also

successful in our application for our Targeting Early Numeracy Grant earlier

this year which involved K-2 classes.

This year our grounds committee (made up of members of staff, P&C and

School Council) continued to concentrate on the promotion and appearance

of our school. We now have extra signs around the school, improved

gardens and are currently working toward an attractive entry into the school

in King Street. Our community liaison team have improved the appearance

and functionality of our website as well as developing our school prospectus,

improving our newsletter and our new school app which has been very

positively received.

The P&C and our School Council continue to support our school through

major fundraising activities such as the ever popular Cracker Night and

providing a wider community perspective on policy matters and school

improvement. We thank them for their ongoing commitment, advocacy and

support of our school community.

This year we welcomed Mrs Tan, Miss Merta, Miss Honeysett and Mr Ingram

to our permanent staff. We have also been lucky to have employed Mrs

Newton, Miss Gay, Miss Mclackland, Mrs Bowman and Mr Phelan on a

temporary basis. We farewelled Miss Hulyer and Mr Beh. We thank Miss

Hulyer and Mr Beh for their contribution to King Street. Our new staff are

settling well into our school and are closely supported by our other teaching

and administration staff.

Have a safe and Happy Christmas Season – Cath Larkman

1B and 1T Enjoy Counting Vehicles On Thursday 4 December, 2013, 1B and 1T walked down to the front of the TAFE on the New England Highway. We have been talking about transport in HSIE and graphs in mathematics, so we surveyed the vehicles that drove past us. We discovered that the most popular form of transport is the car, that there were more vans than motorbikes and that we didn't see any emergency vehicles. Mrs Tan and Mrs Burgess picked a windy day so that the children had lots of practise in holding on to their piece of paper with one hand and keeping their hat on their head with the other! A great time was had by all and all the students were beautifully behaved. Mrs Tan and Mrs Burgess

4 Ebony off to Gallipoli The staff and students of King Street were very excited to hear that our former student, Ebony Ford, was recently selected to represent Singleton High school in April 2015 at the centenary commemoration of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. The selection process for Ebony began in last September, where she was required to research a selected soldier. Ebony researched her great, great, great uncle Peter (Todd) William Richmond who came from Delegate in the state’s Snowy River District. Private Richmond saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli and France and was tragically killed at Pozieres in 1916 aged 26. After a school interview, then a further interview at Muswellbrook, Ebony received the great news that she was heading to Gallipoli. She is naturally extremely excited about the 20 day trip, and will act as a roving reporter for a local media outlet while away. There is also a very fancy ball she is looking forward to attending! All of King Street are very proud of Ebony’s achievement and congratulate her on this outstanding honour.

A Rewarding Afternoon for 009 Leaders Last Friday the year 6 students who participated in the 009 program had a reward afternoon. We were treated to pizza, a popper and an ice-block, and were allowed to bring in our electronics for the afternoon. We all had a fantastic afternoon, and we feel 009 was a great experience to be a part of. We would like to thank all of the year 6 teachers for supporting us all year. Phoebe and Millie

King Street Mobile App NOW LIVE!

Great News! Our school now has a mobile phone app. What’s that you may ask, it is a little application that sits

on your phone and gives you instant access to our school information when you click on it, 24/7. The app is

going to give parents the ability to instantly access newsletters without going to the website, or to send in a sick

note while you stand outside the school because you forgot to write a paper note! We will be sharing many of

the other features with you over the coming weeks, but for now download it to your smartphone by going to either

the Apple App Store or Android Google Play Market and search for ‘King Street Public School’. Once you

have found it press install or download.

Features of the School App include:

Our mobile app will let you add Events instantly to your calendar. Just click on the event and look for the

+ sign in the top right hand corner. Press the + and the Event is automatically added to your phone's

calendar. You can then set reminders for yourself. Some phone models may not allow this feature.

When you touch a pin on the Venues map it will show you the details of that venue. And did you know

that if you click on the Directions button a new map will open specifically for the venue. You can then

press the Get Here button in the top right hand corner to get directions from wherever you are to the

venue. Some phone models may display this slightly differently.

You can share the app with friends and other school parents by clicking on the Tell Friend button located

on the home screen.

You can change your details or send an absentee note directly to the school, without having to use a

piece of paper. Simply click on the relevant tabs on the app.

The web site (showcasing events calendar and newsletter) is accessible directly through the app.
