In the third sectionwe receiveinstructionrelative to the Form, Supports, Covering,Furniture,Ornaments,Lights andJewelsofa Lodge; how it is situated, and to whomdedicated.

A Lodge is a certainnumberof brethrenduly assembled, with aHoly Bible, aSquareand Compass, and a Charteror Dispensa-tion authorizingthem to meet.

A Charter is an instrument emanatingfrom a GrandLodge, and, in this jurisdic-tion signedby the GrandMasterandGrandSecretary, authorizing certain brethrenthereinnamed, whenduly assembled,to Ini-tiate, Pass, andRaiseall goodmenandtruewho may apply for the purposeandwhomtheymay find worthy. A Dispensationis alike instrument, issuedby theGrandMasterduring therecessof theGrandLodge, whichfor a limited period, conferssimilar powers.

Our ancient brethren assembledon thehighesthills andin thelowestvales,thebet-ter to observethe approachof cowansandeavesdroppers.

The Form of a Lodge is oblong. It ex-tendsfrom eastto westand from north to

south, and it is said to be thus extensivetodenotethe universalityof Masonryand toteachus that a Mason‘s charity should beequally extensive;for in every countryandin everyclime areMasonsto be found.

A Lodgeis metaphoricall~rsaid to besup-ported by threegreatpillars, denominatedWisdom, Strength, and Beauty; it beingnecessarythat thereshould be Wisdom tocontrive, Strengthto support, andBeautyto adornall greatand importantundertak-Theseings. pillars are representedin theLodgeby theWorshipful Master, theSeniorandJunior Wardens.

The Covering of a Lodge is no less thanthe clouded canopy or star-deckedheavenwhereall goodMasonshopeat last to arriveby aid of that theological ladder whichJacob, in his vision, saw, reaching fromearthto heaver, the threeprincipal roundsof which aredenominatedFaith, Hope, andCharity;which admonishusto havefaith inGod, hope of immortality, and charity forall mankind. Thegreatestof theseis Char-~ty; for ourFaithmaybelost in sight,Hopeends in fruition, but Charity extendsbe-yond the grave, through the boundlessrealmsof eternity.

Every regularLodge is furnishedwith aHoly Bible, SquareandCompass.

The Holy Bible is dedicatedto God, it be-ing His inestimablegift to man,as the ruleand guide of his faith; @ on i al ~s robgtd; the Squareto the Master, becauseitis the properMasonic emblem of his office;andthe Compassto theCraft, for by dueat-tention to its use, we are taughtto circum-scribe our desire and keep our passionswithin dueboundstowardall mankind.

The Ornaments of a LodgearetheMosaicPavement, the Indented Tessel, and theBlazing Star. The Mosaic Pavementis arepresentationof the ground floor o~ KingSolomon‘s Temple, andis emblematicof hu-manlife, checkeredwith good andevil. TheIndentedTessel is a representationof thebeautiful tessellated border on skirtingwhich surroundedthe pavement, and is em-hiematicof the manifold blessingsandcom-forts whichsurroundus, andwhich wehopeto enjoy by a faithful relianceupon DivineProvidence, hieroglyphicallyrepresentedby~heBlazing Star in the center.

The Lights of a Lodge arethree, situatedin the East,West, andSouth. As you mayobserve, there is nonein the North, becauseKing Solomon’s Temple, of which everytodge is a repr~sentation, was situatedsofar north of the Ecliptic that neither theSun nor Moon, at meridian height, could

The Jewelsof a Lodge aresix; threeim-movable,and threemovable. The Squaredenotesmorality, theLevel equality, and the Plumbrectitudeof life.

The Movable Jewelsare the Rough Ash-lar, the Perfect Ashlar, and the TrestleBoard. The Rough Ashlan is a stone astaken from the quarry in its rudeandnat-ural state. The Perfect Ashlar is a stonemadereadyby thehandsof theworkman, tobe adjustedby theworking-toolsof theFel-low Craft. The Trestle Board is for theMasterWorkmanto draw his designsupon.

By the RoughAshlar we areremindedofour rude andimperfectstateby nature;bythe PerfectAshlar, of that stateof perfec-tion at which we hope to arrive by a virtu-ous education, our own endeavors, and theblessing of God; andby the TrestleBoardwe areremindedthat, astheoperativework-

Lodges are situateddue East and WestbecauseMoses, after havingbeeninstrumen-tal in conducting the children of Israelthrough the Red Seawhenpursuedby Pha-raoh and his hosts, by divine commanderected a tabernaclewhich he placeddueeastand west, to commemoratethe mightyeastwind by which their miraculousdeliv-erancewaswrought. Intracing its circumferencewe necessarilytouch upon the parallel lines and also upon theHoly Bible, and while a Mason keepshimselfthuscircumscribed,it is impossiblethat he canmaterially err. The threeprincipal tenets ofMasonry are Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

By the exerciseof Brotherly Love we aretaught to regard the whole human species asone family,—the high and the low, the richand the poor,—who, as created by one al-mighty parent, and inhabitants of the sameplanet, areto aid, support, andprotecteachother. On this principle Masonry unitesmenof everycountry, sectand opinion;andcausestruefriendshipto exist amongthosewho might otherwise have remainedat aperpetualdistance.

To relieve the distressedis a duty incum-benton all men, butparticularlyon Masons, who are linked togetherby an indissolublechain of sincere affection. To soothe the un-happy, to sympathizewith. their misfor-

tunes,to compassionatetheir miseries, andto restorepeaceto their troubledminds, isthegreataim wehavein view. Onthisbasiswe form our friendshipsand establishourconnections.

Truth is a divine attributeandthe foun-dationof everyvirtue. To be goodandtrueis the first lessonwe aretaughtin Masonry. On this themewe contemplate;and by itsdictatesendeavorto regulateour conduct.Hence, while influencedby this principle, hypocriSy and deceit are unknown amongus; sincerity andplain dealing distinguishus; and with heart and tongue,we join inpromotingeach other’swelfare and rejoiC-ing in eachother’sprosperity.

ORDERS OF ARCHITECTURE

By order in architectareis meanta sys-temof all themembers,proportions,andor-namentsof columnsandpilasters;or, it is aregulararrangementof theprojectingpartsof a building, which, unitedwith thoseof acolumn, form a beautiful, perfect andcom-pletewhole.

Fromthe first formationof society, orderin architecturemay be traced. When therigor of seasonsfirst obligedmento contriveshelterfrom the inclemencyof the weather,we learnthat theyfirst plantedtreeson end,and thenlaid othersacrossto supporta cov-ering. The bandswhich connectedthosetreesat top and bottom are said to havegivenriseto the ideaof thebaseandcapitalof pillars; and from this simple hint origi-nally proceededthe more improvedart ofarchitecture.

The Five Orders are thus classed:theTuscan,Doric, Ionic, Corinthian,andCom-posite.

The ancientandoriginal ordersof archi-tecture, esteemedb~r Masons, are no morethanthree, theDaric, ionic andCori’nthian, which were invented by the Greeks. Tothesethe Rornansaddedtwo, the Tuscan,

which they made plainer than the Doric.and the Composite, which was more orna-mental, if not more beautiful, thanthe CQ-rinthian. Thefirst threeordersalone,how-ever, showinventionandparticularcharac-ter, and essentiallydiffer from eachother;the two others having nothing but thatwhich is borrowed, anddiffering only acci-dentally. The Tuscan is the Doric in itsearlieststate, and the Compositeis the Co-rinthian enriched with the Ionic. Geometrytreatsof the powersandprop-erties of magnitudes in general, wherelength, breadth, and thicknessare consid-ered;from a point to a line, from a line to asuper/iceand from a superficeto a solid.

A point is the beginningof all geomet-rical matter.

A line has length, without breadth orthickness.

A super/icehaslength andbreadth,with-out thickness.

A solid haslength, breadthandthickness.By this sciencethe architectis enabledto

constructhis plansandexecutehis designs;the general,to arrangehis soldiers;the en-gineer, to mark out grounds for encamp-ments;thegeographer,to give usthedimen-sionsof theworld andall thingsthereincon-tained,to delineatethe extentof seas, andtospecify the divisions of empires, kingdoms, and provinces. By it, also, the astronomeris enabledto makehis observationsand tofix the duration of times and seasons, yearsandcycles. In fine, Geometryis thefounda-tion of architectureand the root of mathe-matics.

Geometry, the first and noblest of sci-ences,and the basisupon which the super-structure of Freemasonryis erected. ByGeometrywe may curiously trace naturethroughher various windings to her mostconcealedrecesses. By it we discoverthepower, wisdom, and goodnessof the GreatArtificer of theUniverse3andview with de-light the proportions which connect thisvast machine. By it we discoverhow theplanetsmove in their respectiveorbits, anddemonstratetheir variousrevolutions. Byit we accountfor the return of seasons, andthe variety of sceneswhich eachseasondis-plays to the discerning eye. Numberlessworlds are around us, all framed by thesameDivine Artist, which roll throughthevast expanse, and are all conductedby thesameunerringlaw of nature.

A surveyof nature, and the observati~iof her beautiful proportions, first deter-minedman to imitate the Divine plan, and

HISTORICAL LECTURE

We readin the Holy Writings thatit wasdecreedin thewisdomandcounselsof Deityaforetime, that a house should be built, erectedto God and dedicatedto His holyname. We also learn from the samesacredsourcethatDavid, King of Israel, desiredtobuild the house, but that, in consequenceofhis reignhavingbeenone of manywarsandmuch bloodshed, that distinguishedprivi-legewasdeniedhim. He wasnot, however, left without hope, for God promisedhimthatout of his loins thereshouldcomea manwho would be adequateto the performanceof so great and glorious an undertaking.Thatpromisewasverified in the personandcharacter of Solomon, his son, who ascendedthe throne, and, after David was gathered tohis fathers, wielded the sceptreover Israelat a time when (as the greatJewishhisto-rian, Josephus, informsus) peaceandtran-quillity pervadedthe world, and all eyesseemeddirectedtoward Jerusalem,as if towitnessthe splendiddisplay of the wisdomof Solomon.

About this time King Solomonreceiveda congratulatoryletter‘from Hiram, King

The Bee Hive is an emblem of industry, andrecommendsthe practiceof thatvirtueto all created beings, from the highestseraphin heaven,to the lowestreptileof thedust. It teachesus, that aswe cameinto theworld rationaland intelligent beings,so weshould ever be industriousones;neversit-ting down contentedwhile our fellow-crea-turesaroundusarein want, especiallywhenit is in our power to relievethem, withoutinconvenienceto ourselves.

Whenwe takeasurveyof nature, weviewmanin his infancy, morehelplessandindi-gent than the brute, creation; he lies Ian-,guishingfor days, months, andyears, totally

incapableof providing sustenancefor him-self, of guardingagainstthe attackof thewild beastsof the field, or shelteringhimselffrom the inclemenciesof the weather. Itmight have pleasedthe great Creator ofheavenand earth,to havemademan inde-pendentof all other beings;but as depen-denceis one of the strongestbondsof so-ciety, mankind were made dependentoneach other for protection and security, asthey therebyenjoy better opportunitiesoffulfilling the dutiesof reciprocallove andfriendship. Thuswasmanformedfor socialandactivelife, the noblestpart of the workof God; andhe that will so demeanhimselfasnot to be endeavoringto addto the com-mon stockof knowledgeandunderstanding, may be deemeda drone in the hive of na-ture, a uselessmemberof society, and un-worthy of our protectionas Masons.

The Book of Constitutions,Guardedbythe Tyler ‘s Sword, reminds us that weshouldbe everwatchfulandguardedin ourthoughts, words, and actions, particularlywhen before the enemiesof Masonry; everbearingin remembrancethosetruly Masonicvirtues, silenceandcircumspection.

The Sword,Pointing to a Naked Heart, demonstratesthat justice will sooner or

The Anchor and Ark are emblemsof awell-groundedhope, and a well-spent life. They are emblematicalof that divine arkwhich safelywafts usover this tempestuousseaof troubles, andthat anchorwhich shallsafelymoor us in a peacefulharbor, wherethe wicked ceasefrom troubling, and thewearyshall find rest.

TheForty-seventhProblemof Euclid wasan invention of our ancient friend andbrother, the greatPYTHAGORAS, who, in histravels through Asia, Africa and Europe, was initiated into severalordersof Priest-hood, and raisedto the sublime degreeofMaster Mason. This wise philosopheren-riched his mind abundantlyin a generalknowledgeof things, andmoreespeciallyinGeometry,or Masonry. On this subjecthedrewoutmanyproblemsandtheorems;and, among the most distinguished,he erected

The Hour-Glassis an emblem of humanlife. Behold! how swiftly the sandsrun, andhow rapidly our lives aredrawingto aclose! We cannotwithout astonishmentbe-hold the little particleswhich arecontainedin this machine;how theypassawayalmostimperceptibly! and yet, to our surprise, inthe short spaceof an hour they are all ex-hausted. Thuswastesman! Today, he putsforth the tenderleavesof hope; tomorrow, blossoms, andbearshisblushinghonorsthick~iponhim; thenext daycomesa frost whichnips the shoot.; and when he thinks hisgreatnessis still aspiring, he falls, like au-tumn leaves,to enrich ourmotherearth.

The Scythe is an emblem of time, whichcuts the brittle threadof life, and launchesus into eternity. Behold what havoc theScythe of Time makes among the humanrace!
