Dedication to innovation, advanced technology, and excellence in engineering has resulted in the next generation of outdoor LED fixtures from King Luminaire.
LED, which stands for "Light Emitting Diode", is a semiconductor device that emits a narrow
spectrum of light. King Luminaire’s goal in introducing LED technology is to provide customers
with a light source that matches or exceeds the performance of HID technology, while also
providing substantially longer life and cost effectiveness when compared to similar fixtures
utilizing a comparable HID light source.
With LED technology, as with HID technology, King Luminaire continues to provide outstanding
optical performance in terms of output and distribution. The performance of King Luminaire LED
fixtures is therefore designed around the requirements suggested in the IESNA RP-8 standard for
roadway illumination. This means that LED is treated as an ‘alternative’ source to HID and must
meet or exceed the same criteria as HID when it comes to the number of fixtures required, pole
spacings, Dark Sky Friendly™ design, etc.
LED technology is still in the early stages for general outdoor street lighting. Our product
development team is dedicated to continuous improvement of this technology to ensure that
all LED products from King Luminaire continue to overcome all inherent obstacles and deliver
excellent heat control, superior optical performance, and substantial
operational cost savings. King Luminaire will continue to offer the
highest quality product at a very competitive price.

LED: Dark Sky Friendly™
King Luminaire continues its tradition of supplying the highest performance while still addressing the demands of today’s lighting environment by minimizing glare, light trespass, and wasted uplight.
King Luminaire’s K902 LED fixture offers “Dark Sky Friendly™” characteristics, emitting little
to no uplight into the night sky. The flat lens offers full cutoff lighting classification emitting
no uplight.
The benefits of our Dark Sky Friendly™ fixtures are:
• Low glare for better visibility
• Little or no uplight for minimal direct contribution to sky glow
• Minimal light trespass to unwanted areas (homes, bedroom windows)
• Excellent uniformity
Although there are many facets to the demands being made of today’s luminaires, the main
ones are low glare, minimal light trespass and minimal uplight. The combination of these three
attributes is known as Dark Sky Friendly™. Low glare results in improved visibility because
the eye is not drawn to any bright points of light that can dazzle and prevent us from actually
seeing what is being illuminated. The absence of hot spots makes the lighting provided easier
to see by, and consequently improves security.
A luminaire that provides
controlled light minimizes light
trespass, which is brought
about when light falls on
areas we do not wish to light.
Direct uplight (that is light
from the luminaire itself)
can be minimized or even
excluded entirely by the
selection of a luminaire.

Heat Control• King Luminaire recognizes that the largest single contributing factor to LED chip failure is heat.
• Elevated junction temperatures at the LED chip can lead to reduced light output, as well as drastic
reductions in the expected life of the LED chip.
• King Luminaire’s K902 area light fixture utilizes a dynamic fluid cooling system for heat control.
• The fully enclosed, self-contained design of the LED Light Engine enables cool air from outside of
the fixture to be drawn upwards by convection around the internal heat sinks and flow out of the
fixture through our unique vented housing system.
• The self contained, fully sealed LED engine ensures full protection of the LED arrays from the effects
of the environment including dust and moisture.
• This highly effective, dynamic air flow system efficiently draws heat away from the LED chips, allowing
them to be kept well below the recommended heat levels for optimum performance.
Optical PerformanceKeeping with King Luminaire’s long-standing reputation as a quality manufacturer of high performance
street lighting, our new K902 luminaire is engineered to provide the highest degree of optical
performance in the market. The high precision, moulded optical lenses allow the directional characteristics
of LED to be optimized to provide the various light distribution to meet any lighting needs.
Environmental ConcernsKing Luminaire has kept environmental concerns in the forefront during the development of our LED
luminaires. In addition to the benefits gained from reduced energy usage, the direct nature of the housing
virtually eliminates wasted uplight above the fixture. The precision designed optics help reduce glare and
distribute the light evenly onto the ground plane, thus improving lamp spacing and lighting uniformity.
The high performance of the LED Light Engine requires that extra attention be paid to the thermal design, optical performance, and environmental concerns.
