Factors that affect Reaction Rate Lab – Internal Assessment Design an experiment to investigate a factor that affects a reaction of your choice. You will probably need to spend some time reviewing Kinetics. Your lab must collect data to calculate a rate. You cannot repeat any lab that has already been previously done in class. Your may not work with anyone on this lab. You are to do your own work, entirely on your own. You may NOT copy or even model a set of procedures from a lab involving the measurement of a reaction rate from class or the Internet. You will be turning in a lab write-up that includes all the sections described in the Group 4 Lab Guidelines document. Refer to my website for this document. In order to receive full credit for data processing you must make sure that you collect quantitative data and have a plan for processing it. Timeline: (refer to lab guidelines on my website) Wednesday, May 14 10pm: You must e-mail me and tell me what you will be testing, what you will be using (chemicals – totals!), and your dependent and independent variable. ([email protected]) THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL! Question/Variables and tentative procedures (1-7 on guidelines): Friday May 16 - Doesn’t have to be perfect yet. You will need to schedule a time with me during break/office hours to discuss what your plan is. We will do this during class after China trips. Lab will be performed the week of May 26-May 340 AFTER school. Times will be announced after China trips. Lab Report with all parts (1-14): Due on Managebac June 19 12pm. NOT OPTIONAL Honor code: **No one may edit your labs **No one may make suggestions to you about how to conduct your experiment or what calculations you should do. ** No one should look over your calculations to make sure they are correct. ** Your experiment will not be even remotely similar to anyone else in grade 12. This experiment is entirely your own. If you consult anyone, it should be me. Available Reagents: Think back to labs we have done in class. We have all of those chemicals available and we can also order. Some things we have: Metals: - iron filings - magnesium strips and turnings Carbonates - Calcium carbonate - Magnesium carbonate - Potassium carbonate - Sodium carbonate - Sodium bicarbonate - Potassium bicarbonate - We have many, many other things. We also have 2 colorimeters. If there is a lab you really want to do and you don’t see what you need, check with me to see if we have it. IB Criteria is on the following page.

([email protected]) THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL! • Question/Variables and tentative procedures (1-7 on guidelines): Friday May 16 -

Doesn’t have to be perfect yet. • You will need to schedule a time with me during break/office hours to discuss what your

plan is. We will do this during class after China trips. • Lab will be performed the week of May 26-May 340 AFTER school. Times will be

announced after China trips. • Lab Report with all parts (1-14): Due on Managebac June 19 12pm. We have all of those chemicals available and we can also order. Some things we have: Metals:

- iron filings - magnesium strips and turnings

Carbonates - Calcium carbonate - Magnesium carbonate - Potassium carbonate - Sodium carbonate - Sodium bicarbonate - Potassium bicarbonate -

We have many, many other things. We also have 2 colorimeters. If there is a lab you really want to do and you don’t see what you need, check with me to see if we have it. IB Criteria is on the following page.

Defining the problem and

selecting variables

Formulates a focused problem/research question and identifies the relevant variables.

Formulates a problem/ research question that is incomplete or identifies only some relevant variables.

Does not identify a problem/research question and does not identify any relevant variables.

Controlling variables

Designs a method for the effective control of the variables

Designs a method that makes some attempt to control the variables.

Designs a method that does not control the variables.

Developing a method for collection of

data

Develops a method that allows for the collection of sufficient relevant data.

Develops a method that allows for the collection of insufficient relevant data.

Processing raw data

Processes the quantitative raw data correctly.

Processes quantitative raw data, but with some mistakes and/or omissions.

No processing of quantitative raw data is carried out or major mistakes are made in processing.
