• 1989 NCAA II National Champion, 2001 NCAA National Semifinals

TEAM PREVIEWThe Wildcats returned to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2005 and have even higher expectations for 2010. Arizona will have an experienced and youthful roster this season. Along with four returning senior starters, the Wildcats add two transfers and four freshmen who are all looking to make an impact. In his 19th season at Arizona, head coach Dave Rubio leads active Pac-10 coaches in wins, leading the Wildcats to 340 victories. Rubio again has one of his trademark teams that hopes to make a lot of noise in 2010.

STRENGTHS•Senior captain and setter Paige Weber enters her final season anchoring the Arizona offense. Last season, Weber

ranked seventh in the Pac-10 in assists per set (10.75). In three seasons, Weber has totaled 3,579 assists, good for fourth all-time in Arizona history.

• The Wildcats return two experienced outside hitters in senior Tiffany Owens and redshirt senior Whitney Dosty. Both were Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 selections last season along with Weber. Owens led the team in kills (3.76 kps), while Dosty followed her with 3.02 kills per set.

• Besides Owens and Dosty, junior middle blocker Courtney Karst is a valuable player who provides versatility and depth for Arizona. Karst averaged 2.45 kills per set and 0.35 blocks per set in 2009.

CONCERNS• The Wildcats will need to fill the defensive shoes of libero Alanna Resch. Resch led the team in digs last season

with 379 (3.45 dps).• In order for Arizona to play further into the postseason, it will need to win matches in Conference play. In the past

three seasons, the Wildcats have only swept a weekend series three times and only against Oregon and Oregon State.• Arizona must also win on the road in hopes of receiving another postseason bid. Last year, the Wildcats were 4-7

away from Tucson.

TEAM PREVIEWThe 2009 Sun Devils were a young team with underclassmen carrying the brunt of the offense and defense and logging significant playing time. ASU struggled in Pac-10 play, but in 2010, third-year head coach Jason Watson has his eyes on a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Wat-son has another youthful roster this year, but his two seniors - outside hitter Sarah Reaves and libero Sarah Johnson - are two of the best players at their positions in Sun Devil history. With the addition of a group of highly-touted recruits, ASU looks to elevate the program to new heights.

STRENGTHS• The Sun Devils have senior leadership on both offense and defense. Reaves, an Honorable Mention All-Pac-10

selection, paced the team with 4.33 kills per set, fifth in the Conference last season. Reaves has 1,308 kills in her career and sits seventh on the ASU all-time kills list and has led the team in kills since she stepped on the court in Tempe. Johnson is the foundation of ASU's defense and led the team in digs for the second-straight season (4.03 dps), good for sixth in the Pac-10.

• In addition to Johnson, ASU returns nearly every player on defense. The Sun Devils were ranked nationally in blocks per set for the majority of the 2009 campaign. They ranked third in the Pac-10 with 2.74 blocks per set. Junior Sonja Markanovich is the top-returning blocker with 1.24 blocks per set last season.

• Watson welcomes one of the best recruiting classes nationwide to Tempe this season. Outside hitter Danica Mendivil, middle blocker Kylee Terhune and setter Stephanie Preach are looking to make significant contributions in 2010.

CONCERNS• The Sun Devils must build on consistency overall if they want to win, especially in the Pac-10. ASU started last

season with its best record since 1992, when the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, but injuries and inconsistencies hindered them through Pac-10 play.

• With the number of new faces on the roster, ASU must search for cohesion at the beginning of the season.

• Hired as ASU's sixth coach in the program's history on Jan. 30, 2008.• In three seasons at BYU, guided the Cougars to an average of 24.7 wins

per season and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2007 squad reached the NCAA Regional finals.

• Spent 11 seasons as an assistant at four universities, including successful programs at Kansas State, Arkansas State, Montana State and also BYU, where he was an All-American from 1990-94.

• Played for Australian National Team from 1990-91.

TEAM PREVIEWThe Golden Bears will take aim at a ninth-consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament this season, on the heels of three-straight appearances in the regional finals. The Cal lineup will have a different look following the graduation of Pac-10 Player of the Year and first-team All-American Hana Cutura. With a young team this fall (six sophomores and four freshmen), the Golden Bears will rely on underclassmen to continue the tradition of success established under head coach Rich Feller.

STRENGTHS•The Golden Bears are experienced at the setter position with senior Cari Lloyd directing the offense for another

season. Lloyd, Cal’s first All-American at the position, averaged 11.24 assists per set last season, ranking fifth in the Pac-10.

• Cal returns a productive duo in Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 junior outside hitter Tarah Murrey and Pac-10 All-Freshman team honoree sophomore middle hitter Correy Johnson. Murrey was second on the team in kills last season (2.83 kps) and third in digs (2.25 dps). Johnson averaged 1.66 kills per set, good for fourth on the team.

• The Golden Bears welcome a talented recruiting class that includes two Texans that were named to the Volleyball Magazine Fab 50: outside hitters Adrienne Gehan and Lauren Loerch.

CONCERNS•The Golden Bears must replace the offensive power of Cutura. Last season, Cutura led the Conference in kills per

set (5.15) and ranked third in the nation. She became the fifth player in Pac-10 history to cross the 2,000-kill plateau in the final match of her college career last season.

• Cal will also miss the defense of libero Kristen Kathan, who led the Golden Bears in digs (3.80 dps in 2009) for the last three seasons. Even with Kathan, Cal finished last in the Pac-10 in digs per set (13.04) for the third-straight season. The Golden Bears will call on their youth to step up defensively.

HEAD COACH RICH FELLER

• In 2008, tied Cal's best-ever finish in Pac-10 play at 13-5 (3rd), and has led the Bears to a school-record eight-straight NCAA Tournament.

• In 2007, the Bears made their first-ever NCAA Tournament semifinal ap-pearance and was named ASICS/Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year, leading the Bears to a 26-8 record.

• Has posted 20 or more wins in six of the last eight seasons.• 2003 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and AVCA Co-Pacific Region Coach of the Year.• Served as an assistant coach under current USC head coach Mick Haley

and the USA Women's National Volleyball Team from 1997-98.• Has over 20 years of experience coaching women’s volleyball, including 14

years (1983-96) as head coach at Colorado State.

TEAM PREVIEWThere’s no denying that sixth-year head coach Jim Moore has returned Oregon to a national-elite status with four-straight NCAA appearances and top-six Pac-10 finishes for the first time in school history. This year’s squad will aim high again while showcasing several new faces. The Ducks graduated a pair of AVCA All-Americans in outside hitter Sonja Newcombe and middle blocker Neticia Enesi, but Moore welcomes back two starters plus the libero, including senior outside hitter Heather Meyers, and a talented group of newcomers.

STRENGTHS• Leading the way for the Ducks will be Meyers, Oregon’s active leader in double-doubles (13). Meyers already ranks

in the top-10 all-time in several career categories at UO, including hitting (third, .286) and points (fifth, 1210.5). She ranked ninth in the Pac-10 in kills last season.

• Oregon has a trio of returning sophomore starters in liberos Haley Jacob and Kellie Kawasaki, as well as outside hitter Katherine Fischer. Jacob and Kawasaki anchored the libero position last season, while Fischer was an Pac-10 All-Freshman team member after she racked up four double-doubles last year - three of which came vs. NCAA qualifiers Stanford, UCLA and Washington.

• A key addition for the Ducks will be redshirt sophomore transfer and All-West Coast Conference first team honoree Alaina Bergsma. The 2009 WCC Newcomer of the Year ranked in the top-15 nationally for Loyola Marymount in points (ninth, 5.25 pps) and kills (14th, 4.47 kps). Bergsma led the WCC double-doubles (11) last season.

CONCERNS• The Ducks must replace the power and numbers of Newcombe and Enesi, the second-ever pair of same-season

All-Americans at Oregon. Within the Pac-10, Newcombe finished last season ranked fourth in kills (4.35 kps), while Enesi ranked third in hitting percentage (.374) and fifth in blocks (1.08 bps).

• Oregon also graduated setter Nevena Djordjevic, the school’s all-time assist leader with 4,400. A pair of freshmen setters, Lauren Plum and Kamryn Irwin, must take over a high-powered offense that has posted the three highest hitting totals in school history over the last three seasons.

• With only one senior and one junior on the roster, the Ducks will rely heavily on its sophomores and newcomers.

HEAD COACH JIM MOORE• Enters his sixth season in Eugene after leading the Ducks to three-straight

NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2009 squad posted 25 wins, the most in school history since 1986 and reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals.

• Earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors in 2006 with a 17-12 record and first NCAA appearance since 1989.

• In his first stint at Northern Michigan, his 1993 team posted a 38-1 record and captured the NCAA Division II national title.

• Led Kansas State to a 26-9 mark in 1996 and the school's first NCAA Tournament.• Led the Longhorns to three-straight NCAA Tournaments and a Big 12 title,

producing a Big 12 Player of the Year and seven All-Americans.

TEAM PREVIEWOregon State will have a much different look this season after graduating four seniors who started almost every match since they arrived in Corvallis. Among this group was the program’s first-ever AVCA All-American in outside hitter Rachel Rourke. Head coach Taras Liskevych will count on the senior experience of outside hitter Jill Sawatzky and middle blocker Kiersten Sam-brailo to lead a young Beavers squad searching for its first postseason appearance since 2001.

STRENGTHS• Sawatzky, the Beavers' top-returning hitter, finished last season ranked second on the team behind Rourke with

3.25 kills per set. Sawatzky enters 2010 ranked 12th on the OSU all-time list for career kills with 1,019 and ninth for career kills per set (3.10 kps).

• Sambrailo battled through different injuries throughout last season, but still played in 21 matches and led the Beavers in blocking with 1.23 blocks per set.

• Sophomore opposite hitter Ashley Eneliko returns after a solid freshman campaign during which she was named an Honorable Mention Pac-10 All-Freshman. Eneliko finished the season tied for second with 1.00 blocks per set.

CONCERNS• The Beavers must replace the offensive numbers and leadership of Rourke. Rourke, an AVCA Second Team All-

American and two-time All-Pac-10 selection, easily broke the school record for career kills with 1,920 after averaging 4.83 kills per set last season. She ranked second in Pac-10 in the category behind Cal's Hana Cutura.

• Youth is a factor for Liskevych and the Beavers this season, as only four out of 18 players are upperclassmen, and one is a junior transfer. OSU has nine incoming players, including seven freshmen.

TEAM PREVIEWWith the return of six starters, including three All-Americans, eight letterwinners and another elite recruiting class, Stanford looks to win its fifth-consecutive Pac-10 title (13th overall) this season. The Cardinal has the experience and talent to continue its tradition as a national powerhouse as a trio of senior All-Americans in libero Gabi Ailes, outside hitter Alix Klineman and outside hitter/setter Cassidy Lichtman lead the team this season. The Cardinal appears to have the pieces to make a run to its 19th national semifinal and battle for its seventh NCAA Championship.

STRENGTHS• Klineman and Lichtman lead the Cardinal attack. Klineman, a three-time AVCA All-American and All-Pac-10 selec-

tion, led the Cardinal last season with 4.25 kills per set, which ranked sixth in the Conference. Lichtman, an AVCA All-American and All-Pac-10 honoree a year ago, was second on the team with 3.16 kills per set. Additionally, in 2009, she led the team with 22 double-doubles, including 10 triple-doubles.

• The Cardinal also returns its defensive rock at libero with Ailes. She is already Stanford’s all-time career digs leader with 1,641, also 10th on the all-time Pac-10 list. She led the Conference with 5.23 digs per set last season.

• Head coach John Dunning has another talented group of freshmen this season. The class of Lydia Bai, Mary Ellen Luck, Rachel Williams and twins Carly and Sam Wopat is ranked third nationally by PrepVolleyball.com.

CONCERNS• As was the story last season, the Cardinal must replace another All-American at middle blocker. Janet Okogbaa

ranked second in the Pac-10 last season in both hitting percentage (.387) and blocks (1.26 bps). Stanford will look to its two returning starters, redshirt sophomore Jessica Walker and redshirt junior Stephanie Browne. Walker was second on the team with 1.01 blocks per set last season. Freshman Carly Wopat could also see time in the middle for the Cardinal.

• Stanford plays in perhaps the most competitive preseason tournament of the season when it travels to Gainesville, Fla., for the NIKE Big Four Classic. The tournament boasts three-time defending NCAA Champion Penn State, the 2009 runner-up Texas Longhorns and NCAA Regional semifinalist Florida. Stanford fell to Florida in five sets at the UOP Banker’s Classic last season. The Cardinal fell to Penn State, 3-0, in the 2008 NCAA Championship.

TEAM PREVIEWUCLA starts a new era in 2010 with first-year head coach Mike Sealy, who returns to his alma mater following the retirement of the sport’s winningest coach, Andy Banachowski. Sealy brings nearly a decade of coaching experience to Westwood, last season helping Hawai’i to a trip to the NCAA semifinals. The Bruins return 11 letterwinners from last year’s team that recorded the program’s 11th-consecutive 20-win season and finished tied for second in the Pac-10. Sealy

will look upon two Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 selections, senior outside hitter Dicey McGraw and junior libero Lainey Gera, to lead the Bruins this season.

STRENGTHS• McGraw, UCLA's top hitter, returns for her final season in Westwood. She led the team in kills with 3.11 kills per

set last season. McGraw also added 1.88 digs and 0.56 blocks per set.• Bruin libero Gera also returns after leading the team and finishing third among all Pac-10 backcourt specialists

with 4.91 digs per set to go along with 28 aces. UCLA led the Conference for the third straight year with digs per set (17.60).

• Junior middle blocker Katie Camp is also one of the veterans for the Bruins this season. Camp averaged 1.78 kills per set to go with a .289 hitting percentage and 0.94 blocks per set.

CONCERNS• Youth will be served on this year’s squad, with only one senior and three juniors with major playing experience

returning. Among the freshmen expected to make an impact for the Bruins this season are outside hitter Kelly Reeves from San Diego and middle blocker Mariana Aquino from Brazil. Reeves is a member of the U.S. Junior National Team.

• The Bruins will have a new setter directing the offense this year. UCLA has three newcomers at the position - junior transfer Lauren Van Orden and freshmen Angelica Chaghouri and Madie Smith.

TEAM PREVIEWHead coach Mick Haley and the Women of Troy are poised for a successful season with the return of six starters, including All-Pac-10 junior outside hitter Alex Jupiter. USC welcomes an outstanding freshman class, led by the No. 1 player in the nation, outside hitter Falyn Fonoimoana. The class may be the best for the Women of Troy since 2000, when future three-time All-American April Ross headlined a group of players that went on to win back-to-back national championships in 2002 and 2003. USC led the Conference in both kills and assists last season, and has both veterans and

newcomers who can continue to put up big numbers for the team this year.

STRENGTHS•Experience will be the key for success again this season for USC as the Women of Troy welcome back the team

leaders in kills with Jupiter (4.54 kps) and assists with junior setter Kendall Bateman (12.24 aps).• Bateman tallied 1,431 assists last season, tops in the nation. Look for her to continue to lead the team on offense

and be one of the Conference's top setters this season.• USC has the top-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to PrepVolleyball.com. The Trojans’ freshman

class includes five players ranked in the Top 100 nationally, including three players in the top 11 spots and the nation’s No. 1 player in Fonoimoana.

CONCERNS•While USC returns six starters, the Women of Troy will have a new libero this season. Freshman Natalie Hagglund

must fill the shoes of Alli Hilgren (4.51 dps).• Senior outside hitter Kimmee Roleder is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in the spring. Roleder was

third on the team with 281 kills (2.55 kps) last season.• The Women of Troy have an early-season rematch with Hawai'i as part of the Hawai'i Invitational. The Rainbow

Wahine defeated USC last season in the NCAA Tournament.

HEAD COACH MICK HALEY• Inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2006.• Led the Women of Troy to a 52-match winning streak from 2002-2004.• Became the second coach in NCAA history to guide two different teams to

the NCAA title - Texas in 1988 and USC in 2002 and 2003.• Since NCAA play began in 1982, his teams have won at least 20 matches

in 21 of 23 seasons, including eight seasons with 30 or more wins.• Led the U.S. National Team to a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan American Games.• Accepted the USC coaching position in 1999, but did not assume the posi-

tion until fulfilling his responsibilities with the U.S. National Team.• Head Coach at Texas for 17 years (1980-96), compiling an overall record

of 522-137-1 (.792). In addition to the leading Texas to the 1988 NCAA title, he guided the Longhorns to 13 Southwest Conference titles.

TEAM PREVIEWWashington enters the season in search of a ninth-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth under head coach Jim McLaughlin. The Huskies return 10 players from a squad that went 24-6 last season and finished runner-up in the Pac-10 for the fourth year in a row. Washington must adapt to life without 2009 graduates Jill Collymore, Tamari Miyashiro and Airial Salvo, but the five returning starters have both the experience and talent to lead the Huskies this year.

STRENGTHS• Powering the Husky offense are senior outside hitters Kindra Carlson and Becky Perry, and junior middle blocker

Bianca Rowland. Carlson and Rowland were AVCA All-Americans in 2009 and Perry was an All-Pac-10 performer in 2008. Washington led the Conference in hitting percentage last year (.288) while Rowland led all individuals (.456). Rowland also ranked third nationally and broke the Washington record for hitting percentage last season. She may see time at outside hitter in addition to middle blocker this season. Among Pac-10 hitters, Carlson ranked seventh in kills (4.00 kps).

• Washington has a veteran at the setter position, with senior Jenna Hagglund piloting the offense. Hagglund, an AVCA Third Team All-American and All-Pac-10 selection, ranked fourth in the Pac-10 with 11.30 assists per set last season. She enters her final season with the Huskies ranked second on the school’s career assists chart with 3,996.

CONCERNS• Passing will be key this season with the loss of libero Miyashiro, a three-time All-American for the Huskies. Miyashiro

holds the school record with 2,382 digs, which is also ninth in NCAA history and second in the Pac-10. No current Washington player has started a match at libero, so someone will need to step up there. Candidates for the fall include junior Kandiss Anderson, sophomore Kelly Horford and redshirt freshman Jenna Orlandini.

HEAD COACH JIM McLAUGHLIN

• Guided the Huskies to their third-consecutive NCAA Tournament semifinal appearance in 2006.

• Led the Huskies to their second-straight Pac-10 title in 2005, then capped off the year with the school's first NCAA Championship and a school-best 32 victories.

• Earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Huskies to their first-ever Pac-10 title in 2004. Also named AVCA National Coach of the Year after the Huskies reached the NCAA Semifinals.

• In nine seasons, has produced eight 20-win seasons, 31 All-Americans and 46 All-Pac-10 selections. A three-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year recipient.

TEAM PREVIEWThird-year head coach and 2009 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Andrew Palileo has the Cougars headed in the right direction. Washington State made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2002. The Cougars also had their first winning season since 2002. Palileo has seven players returning, including three starters. However, he must replace last year’s All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention selections, setter Renee Bordelon and middle blocker Cassie Robbins, as well as outside hitter Jackie Albright. WSU will rely on its veterans as well as seven newcomers to continue the

success experienced in the past two seasons and play deeper into the NCAA Tournament.

STRENGTHS• Sophomore libero Oceana Bush, a Pac-10 All-Freshman selection last season, led the Cougars in digs with 4.78

digs per set, which ranked fourth in the Conference.• Junior Meagan Ganzer is the most experienced outside hitter on the team. Ganzer led WSU last season with 3.30

kills per set, good for 10th in the Conference. Transfers Vanessa Murray and Kaleinani Kabalis will provide more attack options at the outside hitter position.

• The Cougars also return a Honorable Mention Pac-10 All-Freshman selection in Rachel Todorovich. The sophomore right side hitter averaged 2.18 kills per set to go with 1.30 digs per set last season.

CONCERNS• With the loss of Bordelon, WSU must adjust to a new setter directing the offense this season. Bordelon averaged

11.47 assists per set last season, ranking third in the Pac-10 and 14th nationally. The only setter to have played for the Cougars already is junior Alex Deimer, who played in 19 sets last season. Deimer and junior transfer Maddie Dolny will complete at the setter position this season.

• Senior Brittany Tillman is the veteran at middle blocker with the loss of Robbins. Robbins averaged 1.21 blocks per set last season, ranking fourth in the Pac-10. The Cougars will look for contributions from freshmen Marcelina Glab and Stephanie Hagins.
