Technology Resources to EnhanceData and Graphing in the Elementary Classroom Molly Lippert

Data and Graphing StandardsKindergartenMKD1. Students will pose information questions, collect data, organize, and display results using objects, pictures, and picture graphs. 1st GradeM1D1. Students will create simple tables and graphs and interpret them. 2nd GradeM2D1. Students will create simple tables and graphs and interpret their meaning. 3rd GradeM3D1. Students will create and interpret simple tables and graphs.4th GradeM4D1. Students will gather, organize, and display data according to the situation and compare related features.5th GradeM5D1. Students will analyze graphs.M5D2. Students will collect, organize, and display data using the most appropriate graph.

The resources shared in this presentation focus on the math standards of graphing and data analysis. In Kindergarten, students learn to pose questions, collect and organize data, and display results using pictures and picture graphs. In 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students further develop this graphing skills through creating and interpreting simple tables and graphs including pictographs, bar graphs, tally charts, data tables and Venn diagrams. In fourth and fifth grade, students learn about line graphs and pie graphs. Students are also expected to identify which graphs are most appropriate for a given set of data. There are many opportunities with graphing and data to teach students the real life applications of graphing. 2Process StandardsP1. Students will solve problems (using appropriate technology).

P2. Students will reason and evaluate mathematical arguments.

P3. Students will communicate mathematically.

P4. Students will make connections among mathematical ideas and to other disciplines.

P5. Students will represent mathematics in multiple ways.

The process standards appear in all grade level math standards. These are the mathematical process that students use every day to solve problems. Students will be able to solve problems, reason and evaluate, communicate mathematically, make connections, and represent math in multiple ways. All resources listed can be used to engage students in higher order thinking that will develop the students mathematical process. 3Microsoft ExcelCreate data tablesUse data to create multiple graphs

Grades:Fourth and Fifth

One resource that is commonly overlooked for students in elementary school is Microsoft Excel. Teachers and administrators use Excel weekly to store student information, keep track of grades and organize students based on formative assessment. Excel can also be used by students to create data tables from data collected in the classroom. Students can then use that data to create different graphs. This is an excellent way for intermediate students to look at all the graphs that can be created from a given set of data and be able to choose the most appropriate graph for the data. 4Graph ClubSimple data entry for studentsGraphs are customizable with pictures and colors Students can easily toggle between different types of graphs

Grades:Kindergarten-Fourth

Graph Club is a software program that makes creating graphs more accessible to the younger elementary students. Data input is simple and easy for students to manipulate. Students can customize graphs with pictures and colors. This feature is useful for students with disabilities and English language learners who may not be able to read or write. These students can instead choose a picture to match the given data . Once data has been put into the table, students can easily toggle between multiple types of graphs allowing them to see how one set of data looks in different graphs. 5Poll Everywherewww.polleverywhere.com

Used to collect authentic dataAllows students to engage family and friends outside of the classroom

Grades:Fourth and Fifth

Poll everywhere is a website that allows you to create your own online survey. Participants in the survey can then respond via text message or through the internet link provided. This is a great way to engage students in the learning process by providing them an opportunity to collect data beyond the classroom. Students can create a survey in class and then collect data from friends and family members at home. Poll results can then be viewed in a graph or data table and can be exported into Powerpoint or published on websites or blogs. 6Kid Zone http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/Internet basedStudents are abled to create various graphs online and print or saveAccessible at home for students with internet

Grades:Second Fifth

Kid Zone is an online resource that is very similar to graph club. Students can use pre-made templates to enter data and create graphs. This is a free resources so students can use this at home or in places that they may not have access to programs like Microsoft Excel or Graph Club. 7Math Forum http://mathforum.org/workshops/usi/dataproject/usi.elemlessons.htmlFor TeachersActivity ideas for studentsLinks to real life data sets available on the internetLink to student page with weekly problems and math tools

Grades:Kindergarten Fifth

Math Form is an online teacher resource. This site has many ideas for activities that support engaged learning. Teachers can access lessons created by other teachers for exploring data as well as find links to real data sets available on the internet. 8Illuminations (NCTM)http://illuminations.nctm.org/WebResourceList.aspx?Ref=2&Std=4&Grd=0Lesson and projects that support engaged learning and higher order thinking

Illuminations is a website provided by the national Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This page provides a variety of links that apply to data analysis and graphing. These links are lesson ideas or projects that again support higher order thinking and engaged learning. 9Real Data SitesThe following sites offer real life data for students to analyze and graph.

US Censuswww.census.orgKids Zonehttp://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Weather Watchhttp://www.cyberbee.com/weatherwatch/

These three sites offer real data sets for students to analyze and graph. The United States Census has many interesting facts that could help expand students thinking of data beyond the classroom. It also offers students a real life connection to how data is used in the real world. 10
