THE BIG PICTURE: - You must think of your resume as a SALES BROCHURE. The people reviewing your resume are trying to answer the question, "How can this person bring VALUE to our team?" You need to show what VALUE you bring! - The average resume gets looked at for 6-30 seconds. Keep your formatting simple, logical and easy to read! - If you'd like to use color, keep it VERY basic so as to not distract from your VALUE. - If possible, SHOW results (numbers are great), rather than TELL vague statements. - Your resume CANNOT have a single mistake. Child Life is highly competitive and one mistake can cost you. So, please have at LEAST 5 people look over your resume before submitting it.

THE EDUCATION SECTION: - Use B.S., B.A., M.A. or M.S. - Starting Junior year of college, high school experiences should no longer be included on your resume - GPA is optional, but list a GPA above a 3.5+ is recommended - "Anticipated" should be used until the final semester of schooling... - Dean's List, Scholarships, or Relevant Coursework can be listed here. - Study abroad experiences that involved child life or work in hospitals can go under this section

EXPERIENCE SECTION: - Resumes are a SCIENCE and an ART - The SCIENCE: The Experience section must be in reverse chronological order BY END DATE. - The ART: Choose a heading here that will capitalize on your BEST experiences (e.g. Using "Child Life Experience" allowed Kindel to put her teaching role down below in "Related Experience"). - Dates should be written consistently. Either abbreviate all months or fully write all months. - Both paid and unpaid positions can be included.

EXPERIENCE SECTION - BULLET ADVICE: - Never use the words "I", "me" or "we" - Bullets must be concise, value/results focused and no more than two lines long. - Aim to have between 2-5 bullets for each experience. Your most recent experiences should typically have the most bullet points. - Bullets should be ordered top to bottom by how impressive they are. Strongest at the top and weakest at the bottom. - Every bullet MUST begin with a strong action verb. See "Child Life Strong Action Verbs" resource on the Child Life Cooperative website for ideas. - Avoid weak verbs like "worked", "learned". Also, avoid reusing the same verb multiple times. - Quantify bullets when possible. Don't just say "Coordinated appointments for patients and families..." Always add quantifiable details, "70+ patients and families" - Also, add important detail so the reader can picture what you did. Example: "annual oncology party".

MORE BULLET ADVICE: - Where possible use child life vocabulary (e.g. "developmentally appropriate play"). See the "Child Life Phrases for your Resume" resource on the Child Life Cooperative website for additional recommended phrases. - Each bullet point should clearly communicate 1 or 2 skills. Example: This bullet point focuses solely on the skill of play.

EXPERIENCE SECTION - TITLES - Titles should always be in BOLD because they are most important - While still being honest, adjusting a title to BEST describe your responsibilities is acceptable. Example: instead of using her official "volunteer" title, Kindel adjusted this to "special events volunteer" since it better described her ACTUAL role.

EXPERIENCE SECTION - MORE ON HEADINGS - This second experience section can be a "catch all" section. It continues valid but less important experiences. - Other potential names for this section: "Relevant Experience", "Volunteer Experience", or "Leadership Experience". - This section can contain both paid and unpaid positions.
