KIMBERLY HIGH SCHOOL
FAMILY NEWSLETTER
Washington Post’s America’s Most Challenging High Schools
http://apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge/
April 2017
Even though we are just beginning the final quarter of the 2016-17 school year our work for fall is already well under way. I’m excited by the work of our Academic and Career Planning Team. This team is preparing a plan with the goal that each student will have a viable post high school plan. Career planning will begin prior to high school but at our level it will include identifying career pathways, creating job shadowing and career experiences, and planning for elements like alignment of high school courses, financial planning, and career research. All students will experience some elements of the plan next fall as we work through implementation.
We have recently met with our senior class officers to finalize plans for Graduation 2017 which will be held in our field house on June 7th. Our senior officers have done good work in putting plans together for this event.
April and May will also bring us into the Aspire and AP Test seasons. Please be sure to see the information in the newsletter about testing times and schedules for Aspire (sophomore) and AP testing. We have also included the schedule for our annual spring music concerts and art show. I hope you are able to join us to experience the work of our vocal, instrumental and visual artists.
As always, thank you for your support of education at Kimberly High School.
Go ‘Makers!

2017 Medical Mentoring Participants
The following students have been selected to be a part of the Fox Valley Medical Mentoring program.
This elite job shadowing program selects students based on academic rigor, teacher recommendations,
and student essays. Students will have the opportunity to shadow a variety of medical professionals and
all Fox Valley schools participate in this program. These students have a strong desire to obtain a degree
in the health care field and will spend their summer experiencing these professions first-hand. Good Luck!

Badger Boys State is an experience like none other. It may be quickly described as a program which teaches
the workings of government “by doing,” but it is much more than that. It is a week-long journey through many
things that make us who we are: leaders, friends, students, athletes and most of all citizens of our respective
cities, towns, and our state. Some people who have participated in the program have described it as “one of the
most challenging, rewarding, and fun experiences of my life.” The KHS Staff was asked to choose 3 boys
who have excellent scholarship, community and school involvement and sound character. The three choices for 2017 are
Samuel Radtke, Daniel Ponto, and Justin Coon. Source: http://www.badgerboysstate.com/information/
Badger Girls State is a very important part of the American Legion Auxiliary's Americanism program/
Designed to train future stateswomen in the science of government, Wisconsin launched American Legion
Auxiliary Badger Girls State in 1941 with 138 citizens participating. The program has grown to over 725
citizens yearly and continues to be a major project of the Department of Wisconsin's American Legion
Auxiliary. Kimberly High School girls were encouraged to apply and their applications were evaluated
anonymously by a committee of KHS teachers and staff to choose four participants. These participants are Adrianna
Mohr, Vanessa Rooyakkers, Chanler Niemi, and Morgan Smarzinski, with Kaylee Vermeern named as the alternate.
Congratulations to all who were selected for this honor.

Both Kimberly High School Rube Goldberg Machine teams earned awards at
STEM Forward’s Wisconsin Regional Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. The
Kimberly Kitchen team was awarded first place and advances to compete at
Nationals. They also received the Safety Award. The Barbershop team earned
third place and the Most Creative Use of Materials Award. Each machine
performs this year’s task of applying a Band-Aid through a complex series of at
least 20-steps (their machines are 40+ steps beyond the minimum!).
Congratulations to these students for pursuing their potential in academics and co-curriculars.
Watch the machines in action below.

Battle of the books had another successful year. This year, they took 3nd place which is an awesome accomplishment. These four students spent countless hours reading the 20 novels selected for the competition and then practiced answering very specific questions about each. They had to give both the title and the author in their responses and both needed to be spelled and punctuated perfectly to count. Here is a link to more information: http://www.wemta.org/programs/battleofthebooks.cfm The students will be receiving a plaque and will be featured on WEMTA's website.
The students who competed were: Autumn Gomez-Tagle Syd Simonis Hayley Hirsch Lindsay Heagle
The Rube Goldberg team took a 1st place this
weekend at Nationals in Columbus, Ohio for
the “Kimberly Kitchen”. They also received the
Creative Spark Award, Teamwork Award, and
the Spirit of Rube Award

Dear Kimberly High School Parent or Guardian, Beginning in the 14-15 school year, the state of Wisconsin introduced a number of changes to the state’s student assessment system. Since that time, those changes have remained consistent and include: Aspire Early High School Assessment – grades nine and ten ACT and WorkKeys – grade eleven Forward Social Studies assessment – grade ten The ACT Early High School Assessment will cover five subject areas for students in grades nine and ten: Reading, Math, Writing, Language Arts and Science. The tests will be computer-delivered and will be spread out over multiple days. Students in grade nine will test during their English classes the weeks of April 24 and May 1. Students in grade ten will test on April 25 & 26 during a modified school schedule. In addition, students in grade ten will take the Wisconsin Forward Exam, a Social Studies-only test that will be administered by computer on Wednesday, April 26. In addition, for the third year, every junior in the state of Wisconsin is required to take the ACT and Work Keys assessments. This year those tests will be held on February 28 and March 1. All juniors will report those dates during a modified school schedule. Please note the modified school schedules listed on the next pages. Additional information about the ACT Early High School and Forward assessments will be shared as they become available.
