Orcas, or killer whales, are the largest of the

dolphins and one of the world’s most

powerful predators. (National Geographic,1.)

Page 3: Killer whales project

Classification:• Resident orcas are lovable and live in

large family-centered pods that tend to stay in one area. (They are usually the star attraction at SeaWorld.)• Transient orcas are often found in long-

term stable social units. They are quiet and very sneaky, not many scientists know much about this particular group.• Offshore orcas are similar to resident

whales, but can be distinguished; such as their fins, which seem to be rounded at the tip with multiple nicks on the trailing edge. (Office of protected sources, 3,4.)

Killer whales are most abundant in colder waters, including Antarctica, Norway, and Alaska. Killer whales are found in all parts of the oceans and in most seas from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Killer whales can also be fairly abundant in temperate waters. Killer whales occur in the lower densities, in tropical, and offshore waters. (Office of Protected Resources, 4.)

Sexual maturity of a female killer whale is achieved when the whale reaches 15-18 feet, and may give birth at any time. Calves are nursed for about 1 year and may be weaned between 1 and 2 years of age. The birth rate for killer whales is not well understood, but in some populations it’s estimated about every 5 years for an overall period of 25 years. (Office of Protected Resources, 2.)
