Synopsis

KILL YOUR IDOLS is a thrilling guide to New York’s buzzing downtown undergroundpost-punk scene. Director S.A. Crary kicks things off with the birth of No Wave in thelate 1970’s, providing an angular rush with a priceless collection of live performancesfrom Suicide, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, the Theoretical Girls and DNA. From thisinitial explosion of artistic energy, the film moves through the 1980’s, passing the torchto Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth and Michael Gira of Swans, beforecrashlanding in the noisy Now! of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Black Dice, Liars, A.R.E.Weapons and the Gypsy stylings of Gogol Bordello. Interviews connect the threadsbetween the past and the present, an ever-fertile scene is defined, celebrated andtrashed with equal amounts of enthusiasm, and the creators of some of the mostchallenging rock music of all-time get to explain what they do, why they do it and whereit’s all heading.

“KILL YOUR IDOLS is the only documentary that digs deep enough into theUnderground to truly portray the intensity of New York’s No Wave movement and the

impact it had on future noisemakers everywhere.”

-LYDIA LUNCH

About the Film

First-time filmmaker S.A. Crary couldn't have picked a more apt title for his vivid and complexhistory of New York's art-punk scene. After all, how do you draw a timeline of a movement forwhich the point is and always has been to consciously rebuke what came before you? InCrary's case, the answer is to simply let the players reflect in the moment, which they often dowith as much of an eye toward subtle subversion as toward any kind of objective truth. "Weweren't trying to make music, we were trying to be monsters," says Teenage Jesus & theJerks bassist Jim Sclavunos. He gets support for such claims from bandmate Lydia Lunch,DNA's Arto Lindsay, Glenn Branca, Sonic Youth and others from the late '70s/early '80s art-punk explosion. Exclusive interviews with these originators and a new generation ofpractitioners -- from the Grammy-nominated Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Black Dice to Liars toGogol Bordello -- reveals a consistent hunger for invention through subversion, motivationsthat come into cacophonous focus in the new and archival concert footage bridging theinterviews. What also comes out is a depth of retrospection amongst the older generation thatputs the younger generation's musings in a context that will surprise even the most plugged-inof scenesters. By documenting art-punk in the same spirit as the movement itself has playedout -- he directed, shot, and edited the film himself for an initial budget of just over $300 --Crary has created a compelling reference for a movement that defies them and managed tostay true to its spirit in the process.

The film was distributed theatrically and on DVD in North America by PALM PICTURES, inJAPAN by UPLINK (a division of PLEXI FILMS), and in Europe by MINERVAPICTURES/RARO VIDEO. The film was also acquired for television by SHOWTIME andSUNDANCE CHANNEL.

In 2013, KILL YOUR IDOLS was included in the permanent archives of the Rock and Roll Hallof Fame.

About No Wave

The No Wave movement developed in New York in the late 70s, in the fall-out from punk'scultural apocalypse, and inspired by Suicide's incendiary debut album. The downtown art crowdformed bands that were determinedly anti-Rock 'n' Roll, refusing to accept the perceivedconstraints of the verse-chorus tradition, and making some glorious noise. Christened the “NoWave,” in reaction to the upbeat New Wave musicians with their corporate recording contractsand careerist footholds in the Billboard charts, the movement was short lived but influential.Every noise band influenced by Sonic Youth and Pussy Galore owes No Wave a debt. Its truelegacy was the torch passed on to carriers in the proceeding decades, with followers such asSonic Youth, Jim Thirwell from Foetus and Michael Gira from Swans through the 80s, upthrough to the lauded scenesters of recent years, including Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars and A.R.EWeapons.

About the Director

S.A. Crary is an award-winning film director and producer whose features films include KILLYOUR IDOLS (2004), HULDUFOLK 102 (2006), WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS: A MAN WITHIN(2010), the upcoming LIBERATION IS MY LOVER and a slated feature documentary oncomedian Andy Kaufman.
