1.1BACKGROUND

This report describes the achievements, challenges and lesson learned in the implementation of

KijanaChaguaMaishaProjectfortheperiodofoneyear,fromJanuary2013toDecember2013.The

project was implemented in 10 secondary schools within Nyamagana and Ilemela district in

Mwanzacity,namelyKangaye,Nundu,Nyasaka,Mhandu,Mahina,Mtoni,Igelegele,Igogo,Bugarika

andMapangosecondaryschools.Duringthisreportingperiod,EBLIhaslearnedalotandcontinue

learningoninnovativestrategiestoreachitstargetmoreeffectivelyandefficiently.Someofthese

strategiesincludetheintroductionoftheyoungmotherscomputerliteracyforschooldropoutsand

theinterschoolcompetitionsthathasbecomethetalkofthestudents.Wearemostgratefultotdh-

ch for the continued financial support that has played a crucial role in transforming the lives of

youngpeopleandmaking themmorecapableof shaping theirowndestiny.Please findbelowthe

impactofaccomplishedactivities.

1.1PROJECTOBJECTIVES

Themain objective of this project is to contribute to decreased number of girlswho drop out ofschooldue topregnancy in10 secondary schoolsand increase thenumberofyoungmothers thatacquireemployment/selfemploymentthroughcomputerandentrepreneurshiptraining.

1.1.1PROJECTSPECIFICOBJECTIVES

Ø Tostrengthen1000youngpeoplewiththenecessaryskillsneededtochooseandmaintainahealthy lifestyle, avoiding casual sexual behavior patterns which put them at risk ofpregnancyanddroppingoutofschoolby2013.

Ø To build the capacity of 1000 girls to resistmaterial induced sex by teaching them basicentrepreneurshipskillsby2013.

Ø Tosupport1000youthtobebetterorganizedtoactivelyknowanddemandtheirrightswithspecial emphasis on the prevention of teen pregnancy and infringement of SexualReproductiveHealth&Rights(SRH&R)

Ø Toincreaseprojecttechnicalsustainabilitybeyondthefundingperiod.

1.1.2PARTNERPLATFORMSANDHARMONIZATIONMEETINGS

Intheperiod2013,EBLIstaffattended3partnermeetingsandoneharmonizationworkshopledbytheNC.In thesemeetingswereviewedpartnerachievements, challenges, lesson learnedaswellasgettingfeedbackfromtheNConprojectvisits.

1.1.2.3DONORPROJECTVERIFICATIONMEETINGSANDFIELDVISITS

Education forBetterLivingorganization(EBLI)hadthepleasureofbeingvisitedby theNationalcoordinator (Mr. Constantine Nyambajo) and tdh-ch National Office Finance (MR. HamisiMbekenga)3timesinthecourseoftheyear.Thepurposeofvisitswastocarryoutverificationofreportsandfinancialdocuments,receiptsandrecommendationsforprojectsustainability.Inregardto our organization it became apparent that aswe progressedwe need to install an accountingsystem(tohaveanaccountingpackagesuchasQuickBook,stampedcopyofbankchequeandbankstatement, and to establish bank reconciliation on monthly basis). In addition, a qualifiedaccountantisimperative.

1.1.2.4FIELDVISITATMAPANGOSECONDARYSCHOOL.

1.1.2.5WORKSHOPS/MEETINGS/TRAININGSATTENDEDBYSTAFF

Wehad1in-housetraining/workshoponactionplanning,1youthdevelopmentmeetingconductedbythegovernment,1trainingonSACCOSasafollowupofthedistrictyouthdevelopmentmeetinginIlemela,conductedbytheMinistryofinformation,youth,cultureandsportsunderthesponsorshipofForumSyd.Towardstheendoftheyear,theNCorganizedaworkshoponFinancialManagementwhichwealsoattended.

RESULTS

Someofthemajorresultsofthemeetings/trainingsandworkshopwasthetechnicalskillsacquired

that will ensure EBLI’s technical sustainability. The exposure and the learning on how other

institutionshandletheirchallengescontributedinbuildingthecapacityofourstaff.

2.0ACTIVITIESACCOMPLISHEDFROMMAY2012TODECEMBER2013ASPERPROPOSAL

2.1.1IMPLEMENTEDACTIVITIESFORTHELEGALDEPARTMENT

StudentsfromMahinasecondaryschoolinfocussedgroupdiscussions.

Underthisreportingperiod,thelegaldepartmentheld20workshopsonthelawsandpoliciesthatfacilitateadolescentsreproductivehealthdevelopment.Thesetrainingsempowered1,049studentswiththerequiredlegalknowledgeonhowtoprotect,demandandrespectsthelaiddownlawsthatregulatesexualreproductivehealth.

2.1.2METHODOLOGY.

Participatory approaches such as focused group discussions (FGD) were preferred whereby the

facilitatordistributestopicalnotestothestudentsandputthemingroupstodiscussthetopics in

depth and make notes on the areas that need clarification or further input. The plenary

presentationsweretackledinayouthfriendlymannerdevoidoflegaljargonandinterpretationso

astoenhancetheunderstandingoflegalaspectsinalayman’slanguage.

2.1.3RESULTS.

Legalunderstandingandknowledgeonthelawsthatgovernyouthsexualityanddevelopmentwas

built to a total number of 1049 students (F 589, M 460) from Kijana Chagua Maisha Club

Membersfromtheschoolbelow.Seetablebelow.

Most of the students became aware of their rights, sexual offences, and the consequences of

engaginginsexualactivitiesbelowtheageofmajorityandhowtohaveapositiveandnegotiable

relationship.Forexampleoneofthestudentscommentedthat:“What I like fromthisworkshop

is the legal education on the rights of the child. I learnt that the child has the rights to

freedom of speech and to be respected in the community regardless of his/her age,

religion, color and sex and that It’s important to followwhatwe have been taught and

avoidengaginginpremaritalsexualactivities.Myknowledgeontherightsofthechildand

sexual offences has dramatically increased. Before this workshop I knew that even a

womancanrapeamanbutnowIunderstandthatawomancannotrapeaman.Iamreally

happytounderstandthetopicscoveredinthisworkshop.”

85% of1000 students commented in the post training evaluation that their knowledge on sexualrights and sexual offences increased. The sentiment expressed below was shared by most of theparticipants:“youhaveshedlightandincreasedmyunderstandingonmatterspertainingtosexualoffencesthatIdidn’tknowpriortocomingtothisworkshop.Iamreallyhappytohaveattendedthis

workshopbecauseithasmademeknowtheeffectofhavingpremaritalsex.Thankyouteacherforthisnewknowledgeandbeingopen,cooperativeandansweringourquestions,Godblessyou”.

2.1.4CHALLENGES.

Ø ThegeneralpublicisnotawareoftheSexualOffencesSpecialProvisionActandthusfailstoeducatetheirchildrenonthesame.

Ø Trainingoutofschoolattractedagreaternumberthanexpected.

2.1.5LESSONLEARNED.

Ø Outofschoolworkshopselicitagreaterresponsefromstudents.Ø Trainingaloneisnotenough.Thelawneedstobeenforcedasadeterrencemeasureonthose

pronetocoercingyounggirlsintosexualaffairs.Ø Onedaytrainingisnotenoughtoequipthestudentswiththepoliciesandlaws,Hencethere

is a need to increase the days of facilitating laws and policy that facilitate adolescent’sreproductivehealthdevelopment.

Ø Theparticipatorymethodasopposedtolecturingisfriendlierandenabledtheparticipantsfeelfreetoaskandrespondtoconcernsraised.

Ø Legal workshops help the students to recognize and realize their behaviours.Forexample

most of themale students were not aware that they are committing an offence by being

involvedingangrape.

The behavior change process department managed to conduct 69 Behavior change process

trainingsin10targetedschoolsnamelyMahina,Nundu,Mhandu,Igogo,Mapango,Mtoni,Igelegele,

Kangaye andNyasaka secondary schools. Trainingsweremainly based on stage(1a) up to stage

(3c)whichassistsyouth(students)toknow,acceptthepresentreality,tochooseandcommitthem

selvestoapossiblenewbehaviorandfinallytoplanandimplementtheirchoicesandcommitments.

2.2.3Achievements

Wemanagedtoreachatotalof2,428studentswhereby1,475weregirlsand953wereboys.The

higher attendance of girls possibly indicates a reawakening and recognition of the value of

educationonthepartofthegirlchild.Insituationsofpremaritalsexgirlshaveatendencytoloose

morethanboysandwedoknowforafactthatgirlsarelikelytodropfromtheschoolsystemwhile

boyscarryonwiththeireducation.

Therewasan increased levelof knowledgeamong thegirlson sexualityandmeansofprotecting

oneself against unwanted sexual advances while the boys acknowledge the importance of not

pesteringgirlsforsex.ThegirlshavetherighttosayNOwhiletheboyshavethestrengthnottoASK

for sex. Through these trainings, students were able to agree that whenever a person chooses

his/hernewlifestyle,she/hemustaccepttoloosesomeoldfriendsandaccepttomakenewfriends

whoaresupportiveoftheirchoice.

2.2.4Challenges

Ø Someofthetrainingspaceintheschoolscannotaccommodatealltheclubmembersduringtrainings.

Ø Thetransfersofclubpatronscontributeinslowingdownimplementationattheclublevel.Ø Someschools/teachersarenotcooperative/flexibleenoughtoaccommodateclubactivities

2.2.5Lessonlearned

Ø Clubmembersareexcitedtobetrainedonbehaviorchangeprocess.Ø Inter school competitions and festivals seem to attractmore students as evidenced in two

schoolsinthepastsixmonths.Ø Reproductivehealtheducation isa complimentary lesson in schools thataddsvalue to the

studentsclasswork

2.2.3ACTIVITY2.2SCHOOLCOMPETITIONS

We conducted two (2) school competitions with the aim show casing club member’s talents,building healthy relationships, creating students awareness andmobilizing them to prevent teenpregnancies.Theinterschoolcompetitionheldon15thFebruary2013betweenMahinaandMhandusecondaryschoolapproximatelyreacheda totalof1600 students.Wehadadebate,(“poverty isthemaincauseofpregnancies in schools”)roleplaysonthedangerofpremaritalsex,footballmatchanddancing.

Another competitionwas the inter class competitionheld at Igelegele secondary school inMarch2013. The competitions approximately reached a total of700 students. The activities conductedduringthecompetitionwerefootballandnetballmatchesbetweenformfourandformtwostudents.

Itshouldbenotedthatweexperimentedwiththisaspectandfoundthatitisanexcellentapproachtomobilizingyoungpeopleonagivencourseofaction.Students lovecompetition,music,dancingand learning in the process of entertainment. The response from this activitywas overwhelmingwithstudentsscreamingkijanachaguamaishaslogan.

2.2.4CHALLENGE

Ø Dueto lackofpriorbudgetaryallocationwewereunabletoconductcompetitions inotherschoolsthoughthedemandwashigh.

2.2.5LESSONLEARNED

Ø In the schools where the competitions took placemore students now are eager to join inKijanachaguamaishaclubs.

Ø School competition is a great method for mobilizing and creating awareness on Kijanachaguamaishaclubsandbehaviorchangeprocess.

Ø The competition should be held at a huge open space in order to accommodate the bignumberofstudents.

Ø EffectivecooperationofteachersandEBLIisimperativeforsuccessfulimplementationoftheproject.

Ø Competitions in schools are good way for students to have a chance to show case theirtalents,torefreshtheirmindandshareexperiencewiththeirfellowstudents.

2.2.6.ACTIVITY2.3Mtonisecondarykijanachaguamaishaclubfestival.

On6thJune2013EBLIstaffswereinvitedtoattendafestivalatMtonisecondaryschoolwhichwaspreparedbyyouth(Kijanachaguamaishaclubmembers).ThemainpurposeofthisfestivalwastocreateawarenessontheissueofteenpregnanciesandSTIs.

2.2.6.1RESULTS.

During the festival, the Kijana Chagua Maisha members were very active and prepared. Theymanagedtoportraythemessageofpreventionof teenpregnancythroughdrama,songs,dancing,andpoem.The festivalwasapproximately attendedby 1600 participants including students andcommunity members. The festival stimulated and created awareness and understanding onpreventionofteenpregnancytostudentsandtothecommunitymembersaroundMtonisecondaryschool.

2.2.6.2Lessonlearned

Ø Youth/studentshavealotoftalents;theyonlyneedsupportandaforumtoshare.Ø Festivalsorganizedandmanagedbytheclubmembersisanadditionalwayofreachingout

andinfluencingstudents.Ø Weneed to conductmore competitions and festivals in other schools because the demand

fromboththestudentsandteachersishigh.Ø Competitionsinschoolsaregoodwayforstudentstohaveachancetoshowtheirtalents,to

refreshtheirmindandshareexperiencewiththeirfellowstudents.

2.2.6.3WAYFORWARD

Ø InsubsequentproposalsweneedtointegratetheschoolcompetitionsaspartoftheKijana

chaguamaishaactivities.Ø Toputmore effort in clubsbyusingdifferentways of training in order tomakemembers

becomechangemakersandnotvictimsofchange.Ø Toprovide frequentseminars toschool teachersso that theycanbepartners inpropelling

theagendaofKijanachaguamaishaanditsgoals.

2.3.ACTIVITY#5:ARTICLES

Duringthe12monthofimplementation124outof136articleswerewrittenanddisseminatedto5

schoolsnamelyKangaye,Nundu,Mahina,MhanduandMtoni secondary.95% of thearticleswere

writtenbythestudents.Wereckonthatbysodoingthestudentsaccordsthemselvesanopportunity

to improve their writing and composition skills. Themost popular articles seemed to have been

thoserelatedwithreproductiveandlifeskills,effectsofpremaritalsex,howtomakegooddecisions

andhowtosetandachievegoals.

2.3.1LESSONLEARNED

Ø Students enjoy reading the articles and responding to the issues raised through writingarticlesoftheirown.

Ø Contributions by students speak more powerfully to their peers and also improve theirwritingskills.

2.4 ACTIVITY#6:MONITORING/REVIEWACTIVITY

In2013wecarriedoutacomprehensivereviewoftheactivitiesundertakenwithaviewtosourceoutthesuccessesandtheshortcomingsofourintervention.Thefindingsindicatedthat:

Ø Therewasa2%increaseinthetransitionrateofgirlscompletingtheireducation.

Ø 67%ofpatronteachersand66%ofstudentscommentedthatthereisempiricalevidenceof

changeofsexualbehaviorpatternamongthestudents.

Ø 95%of the targeted studentsareawareof their sexual reproductivehealthrightsandpoliciesthatgovernthesame.

Ø 95% of students had increased knowledge that enabled them to make informed sexual

choices.

2.4.ENTREPRENEURSHIPDEPARTMENT:YOUNGMOTHERCOMPUTERLITERACY.

In2013atotalof80youngmothersweretrainedoncomputerliteracyskillsandentrepreneurship.

These young mothers who are school drop outs are sourced from the 2 districts of Ilemela and

Nyamagana and come from poor social-economic backgrounds. They were grouped into two

batches of 40 eachand eachgroup trained over a period of 4months culminating in a colourful

graduationceremonyandawardingofcertificates.Priortocompletionoftheirtraining,weheld2

BCPandentrepreneurshipworkshopstopreparethemfortheworkmarketandselfemployment.

Ourmostrecenttracerstudyindicatedthatoutofthe80trainedyoungmothers,30%havesecured

employment,29%areselfemployed,and37%arestillsearchingforjobsand4%couldnotbefound.

Thetracerstudyalsopointedoutsomeofthechallengestheyoungmothersfacepostthetraining.

Major among these challenges is lack of start up capital for those interested in business. Though

there is a youth facility in the government departments to loan out funds for youth groups,

inadequatebusinessplanwritingskillshindersthemtoaccessthesefunds.

Westronglyfeelthatfortheyear2014weneedtostrengthentheUjasiriamaliCBOasasavingsand

loaningfacilityby introducingarevolving fundtoenabletheyoungmothers’accessseed fundfor

smallenterprises.

Challenges:

Ø Frequentabsenteeismasaresultoftheirchildrenorthemselvesfallingsick

Ø Changeofresidenceandcontactsthatmakeposttrainingfollowupcumbersome

CONCLUSION:

TheKijanaChaguaMaishaprojectinschoolsremarkablycontributedtotheincreaseoftransitionalrateofgirlswhocompletedordinarylevelofeducationby1%andreducedpregnancyrateamongsecondaryschoolgoinggirlsby2%.Thedataandinformationgatheredwillbeusedinthefutureforfurtheractionsandimplementationsofthenextproject.

The successes, challenges and lessons learned both in the BCP and Youngmother programswillenableusimproveourinterventionsandhopefullycontributepositivelyinbuildingahealthyfutureforallyoungpeople.
