We are moms, dads and grandparents just like you. We have the same concerns for our children’s health, safety and education that you do.

We created the Kidz Digest because there was nothing like it in Amarillo. We as parents and grandpar-ents are always looking to improve and enrich our children’s lives and we assumed that many of our readers would feel the same way. Our mission is to make a meaningful contribution to our commu-nity.

The Kidz Digest targets parents, grandparents and children themselves with a concentration on education, health, positive activities and community information. Besides providing a much needed service, we feel blessed to have happy, healthy children so we would like to give back by helping children in need in our area. So 10% of the proceeds of the Kidz Digest go to The Panhandle Assess-ment Center. The Panhandle Assessment Center is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency shelter and foster placement for abused or abandoned children in Child Protective Services (CPS) custody.

The Kidz Digest is distributed in American Classifieds once a month throughout Amarillo, Canyon, Bushland and Boys Ranch. We also distribute to the medical center, mall area and our advertisers locations. We also have a fun, interactive website at www.amarillokidz.com, (that is under construc-tion right not) that you can view the entire magazine and find useful tools, information, entertainment and other fun stuff for your children.

We hope you grow to love and use this magazine as much as we do! We would like to thank you for your support and our advertisers for their contribution.

Sincerely,Debby, Cristi, Ryan, Jennelle, Tammy, Becky, Jimmy, Teri, Leslie, Cherisa, Candy and all of our little rug rats!

feature article...The History of Wonderland Park...

More than 50 years ago, Paul Roads had a dream. If hebuilt an amusement park, the children would come. Butwhere to build it? His vision took him not to a cornfield, but to an ugly, barren hill. In their search for the perfectsite, Paul and wife Alethea traveled from San Angelo toa bleak stretch of land in Amarillo’s Thompson Park.

It seemed the dream would die right there, for lack ofwater. “There were no trees, just scrub grass and sandburrs,” Mr. Roadsrecalls. “It waspitiful.” So pitifulthat he andAlethea headedhome. “We onlygot so far asCanyon, when wedecided to givethe location asecond look.”

With the promise of transplanted trees and grading tolevel the area, Mark Miles, then the city’s Parks andRecreation director, convinced the Roads to giveAmarillo a try. They did, and just a few months later,Kiddie Land was born. With three children’s rides and amakeshift ticket booth made out of a box from one ofthe rides, Kiddie Land was an instant hit. However, itwas not profitable enough to support the family. Duringthe next 10 years, Roads continued to work a “day job”

and spent nights and weekends at the park. Finally, hereached a crossroads and had to choose between thepark and his day job. He chose the park and has neverregretted the decision.

With the additionof rides with wideappeal for allages, a namechange was inorder. The Roadschose Wonderland, inspired by Alice in“Through TheLooking Glass.”Although the

Wonderland of today bears little resemblance to theKiddie Land of 50 years ago, many of the seeds of today’spark were sown then. For instance, a commitment tofamily values. “We’ve always wanted this to be a parkwhere you could bring your kids,” Mrs. Roads said.“When we started, the parks weren’t clean, they weremore like carnivals. We didn’t want that then, and westill don’t.”

The importance of family has had a profound influenceon the history of Wonderland. When the park was stillstruggling, the Roads got some needed help from Mrs.Roads’ parents, Robert and Ruth Mikesell, who movedto Amarillo when they retired. Mrs. Mikesell continuedto operate the miniature golf course until she was nearly90 years old.

For the past 30 years, the Roads’ daughter Paula andher husband Paul Borchardt, also known as P.D., havebeen an integral part of Wonderland Park’s operations. While they had many options, they decided to make fun

Page 4: Kidz Digest

PAGE 4 www.amarillokidz.com

their life’s work. After P.D. finished a stint in the Navy, the Borchardts’ relocated to Amarillo to work at the park, and have never left.

Today, Paul and Paula are president and vice presidentof Wonderland Amusements, Inc. With a triple major innaval science, marketing and accounting, and later anMBA in accounting, P.D. brought a business acumen to

the park that helped itevolve from special tospectacular . . . fromKiddie Land, with threerides, to the third-largest amusement parkin Texas. WonderlandPark today is a majorattraction with morethan 200,000 visitorseach year. One reasonis the Roads’ andBorchardts’ commitmentto add new attractionsand constantly invest inmaintenance andimprovements.

Over the years, manyspectacular rides have

been added. Some are purchased from manufacturersor other parks, while others are built specifically forWonderland Park. One good example is the worldfamous Texas Tornado, a double loop roller coaster, which attracts roller coaster enthusiasts from all over

the world. Always on the lookout for the unique and theinnovative, Wonderland added the 12 passenger SHOOTTHE CHUTE in the summer of 2000. It is the first of itskind in the U.S. We prototype many rides, especiallythose from O.D. Hopkins in New Hampshire- the World’slargest water ride manufacturer.

Recently, two other major rides have been unveiled, thePipeline Plunge, developed and engineered just forWonderland, and the Rainbow. Some attractions, suchas the Fantastic Journey, have been built from ideas andphotographs of other parks. Mr. Roads himself designedthe Fantastic Journey, a park mainstay. “The dark house,”as Mr. Roads calls it, took nine months to build. He spentso much time in it that newly-hired help for the year’sseason didn’t know who he was. “They would keepcoming to the office to ask my wife, ‘Who’s that white-haired old man who keeps coming out of that buildingup there’.”

Today, the third generation carries on the family legacyat Wonderland Park. The Borchardts’ daughters Kristen,Keira and Paige have all worked part-time at the park, but their eldest, Rebecca, has made the park her career.A CPA, Rebecca has succeeded her grandmother ascomptroller. “Our family understands our lifestyle,” P.D.said. “We work while everybody else plays and we workwhile everybody works.” He’s only half kidding. TheRoads and the Borchardts work hard to makeWonderland Park fun for their guests . . . and doing sogives them great satisfaction. “They say the man withthe most toys wins,” P.D. said. “I think it’s the guy whohas the most fun. I win hands down.”

PANHANDLE ASSESSMENT CENTERThe Panhandle Assessment Center opened it’s doors in Amarillo, Texas in March of 1990 and was the first and only facility of it’s kind in Amarillo and the Panhandle. The Panhandle Assessment Center (PAC) is an emer-gency shelter and child placing agency for neglected and abused children who have been placed into foster care. PAC operates 24 hours 7 days a week providing care for abandoned, homeless and abused children.

During 2005, Panhandle Assessment Center provided services to more than 300 young victims and their families in crisis situations throughout Amarillo, Lubbock and the surrounding communities of the Panhandle and South Plains. These children had been referred by law enforcement or Children’s Protective Services and other various government agencies all working together to comprehensively aid the abused child to prevent trauma and revictimization by the system.
