WelcomeKids are great. We offer so many different castle experiences, many of which are almost tailor-made for kids. What’s more exciting than staying in a castle, playing knights, and finding out about all the castle’s fascinating history?

That’s why we thought an activity book would be the perfect little addition to your castle stay. There’s a load of activities for kids to do (and maybe the grown-ups too!) plus some cues of questions to ask to find out more about the castle you’re staying in.

We hope you and the kids enjoy your time in the castle. We always love to hear comments from our guests, and can’t wait to hear how your stay goes.

your coat of armSA coat of arms is a design painted on a shield in mediæval times. It was often to signify a particular family fighting in a battle and would pass down from father to son. Here’s a few examples:

Inverlochy Castle

Ballyseede Castle

Cloghan Castle

Paint colours were more limited, and so only a few different colours could be used. The names for the colours came from Old French words:

Sable - BlackOr - GoldArgent - Silver

Gules - Bright RedAzure - Royal or Sky BlueVert - Emerald GreenPurpure - Royal Purple

Commonly, coats of arms have supporters, which are usually animals who support the shield on each side. Common supporters are lions, bears, boars, eagles, horses, dragons, unicorns and griffins.

On the right is the British Royal Coat of Arms, which has a lion and a unicorn supporting it to represent England and Scotland.

yummy recIpeNot only do we have castle hotels, but we also offer self-catering castles which can be taken exclusively by families. For these guests we provide a free cookery book with loads of recipes to use, along with some ones for kids to get messy and stuck in! Here’s a sample...

pepper BoatsIngredients (Serves 2): 1 red or orange pepper4 cherry tomatoes1 tablespoon of olive oil

1 - Pop the pepper by pushing down on the stalk until it is pushed inside. Then tear the pepper carefully to make two even-sized halves. These are your boats. Knock the back of the peppers to shake out any seeds.

2 - Chop the tomatoes up with scissors and add the oil and a pinch of pepper. Stir well.

3 - Add the pine nuts and finally tear up the basil leaves and add these. Give the mixture another good stir.

4 - Divide the mixture down the middle of the bowl using the spoon and add half the filling to each pepper boat. Finally, crumble the goat’s cheese on top of the tomato mixture.

5 - Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese topping is golden. Serve with some crusty french bread. Yummy!
