Some centres also offer specific programmes for Year 11 and 12 WACE level as well as Study Skills. Special programmes run for Kindy and Pre-Primary children, incorporating a unique computer programme to help develop early literacy and numeracy skills. Why are Kip Centres so successful? The Kip McGrath philosophy is: “All children can learn, they only need to be taught well.” Children are first assessed to determine their strengths and weaknesses and then given programmes designed to suit the specific needs of the individual child, whether they be remedial, extension, ESL or preparation for exams. All tutors are qualified and experienced teachers. Parents regularly express amazement at how quickly their children can improve and develop in areas which they previously found difficult. Catering to the particular learning style of the student is very important. Dyslexic children, for example, need to be taught differently to many other children because they are visual learners and require more structure and repetition to develop basic skills. Other children are more auditory, so the approach would be different. With the change to National Curriculum in WA, many students are finding that the expectation is now suddenly much higher and they are struggling to keep up. Centres are seeing many students who have never had issues, suddenly floundering with expectations beyond their current skill. These seventy stories are themselves anAustralian success story. They havebeen developed at the experimental

Fitzroy Community School, founded byPhilip and Faye O’Carroll (Philip was alecturer in Philosophy at the University ofWA in the early 70s and was already writingarticles on education reform).

Publication of the Fitzroy Readerssubstantially boosted the return of phonicsinto Australian schools. They start with A FatCat, and work through to stories like TheInconvenient Puncture. By then you can readthe newspaper, books like Harry Potter, andwhat’s more important, your secondaryschool text books! (Some schools also usethem for early secondary catch-up.)

Fitzroy Community School came top inVictoria for Year 5 in the 2011 NAPLAN, inspelling, reading, grammar and punctuation.Parents from all over Australia are nowbuying the Readers.

As soon as your child gets theirfirst tooth ít’s your role toensure they are looked after.

The Smile Club's Dr John Camachosays that "as Paediatric Dentists we arespecially trained to make sure yourchild has a relaxed and nurturingexperience at the dentist whilereceiving the best quality care".

Ironically even though they arespecialists, prices are the same asgeneral dentists so there is no excusenot to give your child the best oralhealth care available.

Children should visit a PaediatricDentist from aged 1-18 every 6 months.Dr Camacho noted that "it’s always bestto prevent than to have to treat".

It's no wonder kids love going to TheSmile Club - friendly staff trained indealing with kids, TV's on the roof andmost importantly, a caring, stress freedental experience.

Parenting is a difficult enough taskwithout the complications of separationthrown in. Trying to co-parent with

two radically different approaches toparenting, or two parents who do not have agood relationship, makes an already hardtask even more daunting.

Where parties cannot agree on how toparent their children, and the Court isrequired to make a decision, the Court makesa decision in the best interests of thechildren. Equally important are the needs toprotect your children from harm, and theright of the children to a meaningfulrelationship with both parents.

The Court expects that parents, regardlessof their opinion of the other, will promotethe relationship between the children and theother parent and recognise that each parenthas positive qualities and attributes tocontribute to the children’s upbringing.

Call the lawyers at Hunter Cook Legal foran appointment to discuss your situation on6189 2901 or 9478 6148.

Making your separation easier

Parents do everything they can toprotect their children from harm andprovide them with the skills they need

to be healthy, successful adults. The problemis you’re not with them all the time.

There’s something you can do to help getthem stay on track to be successful in schooland to avoid the bully-trap, even whenyou’re not around. Enroll them in a karateclass!

Bullies thrive on attacking (physically oremotionally) people that they see as weak.Kids who are bullied often have (generally asa result of the bullying) low confidencelevels, inability to concentrate on schoolwork, lack of focus and high stress levels, which make them look even weaker.

The Karate program at Shobukan Karatecan help solve these problems.

At Buggles, childcare means so much more than just care. We provide a high quality early learning environment to build a strong education foundation for your child.

Children begin learning from birth so it is important for them to be inspired and begin developing from the start.

We also have a specialised Kindy program for children 3 - 5 years old to prepare them for pre-school, whilst you benefit from the convenience of flexible hours of a childcare centre – with before and after care to fit in with your day. We are conveniently located at 12 locations across the metro area from Joondalup to Mandurah and east to Forrestfield.

It’s the little things that are important when you are making choices for your child. Don’t just take our word for it, come on in and discover Buggles for yourself - your first week is free!

Places are limited so call today on 6210 3210 to arrange a tour at your local centre or enrol online at www.buggles.com.au

Many people don’t think about first-aid training until something badhappens! If a child stops breathing

for any reason, permanent brain damagegenerally begins approximately 4 minuteslater. Basic resuscitation knowledge can makethe difference between life and death in sucha situation.

Injuries such as bleeding, burns, poisoningand allergic reactions also require immediatefirst aid assistance. Thousands of children areinjured every day in Australia and roughly200 have to be admitted to hospital.

Would you know what to do? While manypeople have first aid training, all knowledgefades with time. The Australian ResuscitationCouncil recommends that resuscitation skillsshould be updated annually!

The Save-A-Child course is run by a highlyexperienced lecturer and former ambulanceofficer. A 6 hour and 3 hour course is

available. The course can be run in yourhome during the day, evening or weekend.

Sometimes when couples separate, theyare advised to attend a parentingcourse; this can be specifically for

separated couples or simply for parentingskills and advice. People can sometimeswonder why they are given this advice. Oneof the reasons is that the family unit hasbroken down and so each parent needs to beaware of their own individual parenting skillsand the possible impact of the separation onthe children. The children’s best interestsmust always be put first. Separated couplesshould give serious consideration toattending any course that might help thechildren to adjust and to co-parent. After all,the parents will always be parents of theirchildren and the children ultimately benefitby the parents working together.

How do you know whether to intervenein your child’s education? Some signsare obvious: ebbing self-confidence,

lack of motivation, boredom. But someproblems are disguised by adequateperformance.

According to Janice McGuire ofNumberWorks’nWords, if you want anobjective measure of your child’s capabilityand progress, an expert assessment willprovide the information you need.

“Improving your child’s skills in just onesubject can pay off with unexpectedbenefits,” says Janice. “A surprising gain inself-confidence is often noticeable.”

Relieved mother Susan supports Janice’sassertion: “My daughter was always scared toask for help. Since attending

NumberWorks’nWords she has gained themost important thing - confidence inherself.”

NumberWorks’nWords’ specialist mathsand English tuition centres offer one-on-one,individualised, success-based tuition to allstudents up to year 10. And it’s ‘so much funit doesn’t feel like learning.’

We must ensure all children receiveenough teaching and practice timewith reading, writing and maths.

Staff at International Centre for Excellencehelp hundreds of children each year whocannot read fluently, do not know theirtables and struggle to write a decentsentence. These children desperately needhelp. If they don’t receive intensive, specialised learning assistance, self-esteemsuffers and standards fall even lower.

Victoria Carlton’s literacy and numeracyprograms have helped tens of thousands ofchildren to enjoy learning and improve theirstandards. She believes learning must beexplicit, systematic, enhance creativity andnurture self esteem.

Drownings occur at the water’s edge, not at the fence line. Children climbfences; it is a challenge to them and

they are inquisitive little characters, findingall sorts of ingenious ways to climb over orunder pool isolation fences.

Gates present no obstacle to children.Aside from climbing over the gate, they areable to enter the pool area through the gate,as they often don’t close properly.

Aquanet swimming pool safety nets are allcustomised onsite. They form a barrierbetween children and the water. The safetynets are designed so it’s impossible for pre-schoolers to walk on them. Unfortunatelythis age group makes up most of thestatistics when it comes to child drownings.

The safety nets are designed to supportchildren at the water’s edge, a “kiddie

catcher” from which they can clamber offunharmed.

Call Rodger at Aquanet on 9335 6986 allhours, or visit www.poolcoversonline.com.aufor more information.
