INTRODUCTION
1. Introduction
A. This manual gives field maintenance instructions for Portable Fire Extinguishers466040, 466090, and 898052.
B. Section 1 gives data on the fire extinguisher and tells how the fire extinguisher op-erates.
C. Section 101 gives the equipment and procedures to do tests and troubleshootingnecessary to find malfunctions.
D. Section 201 is not used.
E. Section 301 gives the procedures necessary to disassemble the fire extinguisher.
F. Section 401 gives the instructions and materials to clean the fire extinguisher.
G. Section 501 gives the inspection procedures that are necessary to make sure ofthe continued operation and the checks that are necessary after maintenance.
H. Section 601 gives the repair procedures necessary to make the fire extinguisherserviceable.
I. Section 701 gives the procedures necessary for assembly.
J. Section 801 is not used.
K. Section 901 gives the special tools, fixtures and test equipment necessary formaintenance of the fire extinguisher.
L. Section 1001 is an illustrated parts list (IPL) that gives a list of the parts you canreplace and shows their location on the fire extinguisher.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. Description
A. The portable halon fire extinguishers have an aluminum cylinder, a pressuregauge, and a valve assembly. Fire extinguishers 466040 and 466090 also havea hose assembly. Fire extinguisher 898052 has only a nozzle assembly. Thehand-operated valve assembly, pressure gauge, hose, and nozzle are installedon the top of the cylinder as shown in Figure 1. A pull-out pin and a pull-tite sealprevent the fire extinguisher from being operated accidentally.
B. The fire extinguisher cylinder is filled with a liquid fire-extinguishing agent, Halon1211 (Bromochlorodifluoromethane [CBrClF2)]. The cylinder is pressurized withnitrogen (N2). The valve assembly is attached to the cylinder neck. The pressuregauge is attached to the valve body, and continuously monitors the pressure in-side the cylinder. The valve body gives a method to connect a recharge line tothe fire extinguisher as well as to discharge the extinguishing agent. The hose as-sembly, or nozzle, as applicable, are attached to the valve assembly.
C. A heavy duty mounting bracket is required when the portable fire extinguisher isinstalled in an aircraft, boat, or other movable vehicle. This mounting bracket isnot supplied with the fire extinguisher. It must be purchased separately. See Ta-ble 1, Specified Data for the correct mounting bracket.
2. OperationA. The fire extinguisher is pressurized with nitrogen to get the force that is neces-
sary to push the extinguishing agent from the cylinder. The extinguishing agentand the nitrogen are kept in the cylinder by the valve assembly until the lever ismanually operated.
B. When the lever is pushed down, the valve stem assembly inside the valve bodyis also pushed down. The nitrogen forces the extinguishing agent through the si-phon tube, around the stem assembly, through the valve assembly, and hose ornozzle assembly.

TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION
1. General
A. In the United States, it is mandatory (refer to the United States OccupationalSafety and Health Administration [OSHA] regulations) to do a hydrostatic (proofpressure) test of the cylinders at intervals of twelve years (refer to OSHA 29 CFR1910.157[f] and Table L-1).
B. Walter Kidde recommends you do a hydrostatic test at twelve year intervals (re-fer to 29 CFR 1910.157[f] and Table L-1, and CGA Pamphlet C-1)
C. This section contains the procedures, materials and equipment necessary to dothe tests of the fire extinguishers, and to find the defective parts. Do the visualchecks, leak tests, and the necessary repairs before you do the hydrostatic tests.See IPL Figures 1, 1A, and 1B for the location of the fire extinguisher parts.
D. Unserviceable components must be found during the tests. Refer to Table 102.
2. Test Equipment and Materials
The necessary test equipment and materials are given in Table 101. You can use al-ternative equipment and materials if the measurement accuracy and material life isnot decreased. All calibrated equipment must have a current calibration approval.

3. Weight Check
NOTE: The weight check instructions in this manual supersede theinstructions on the nameplate.
NOTE: Weigh the complete fire extinguisher assembly. This includesthe pull-out pin, pull-tite seal, and hose assembly with hosestrap, or nozzle (as applicable).
A. Put the fire extinguisher on the scale. Record the weight.
B. Remove the fire extinguisher from the scale.
NOTE: If the last recorded weight is not marked on the cylinder, usethe weight limits in Table 1, Specified Data to determine theallowable weight.
C. Compare the weight you got in step A. to the gross weight from the last time thefire extinguisher was charged. If the weights are the same there is no leak.
D. If the weight you got in step A. is less than 1% of the gross, disassemble and re-pair the fire extinguisher, as necessary. Refer to DISASSEMBLY and REPAIR.
E. After you weigh the fire extinguisher, Walter Kidde recommends you write theweight on a locally approved label attached to the cylinders surface.
4. Leak Test
A. Do the halon leak test with an H-25C Halogen Leak Detector or equivalent, cali-brated to 1 x 10-5 Std cc/second. Do the halogen leak test as follows:
(1) Make sure the leak detector is calibrated as specified in the operating in-structions.
(2) Use the detector probe to find if the air in test area contains halon. Refer tothe operating instructions for the leak detector.
(3) Continue to do the leak test on all areas of the fire extinguisher.B. The total values for all leaks must be less than 1 x 10-5 Std cc/second. If the leak-
age is too much, remove the valve assembly and repair as necessary. Refer toTable 102, Fault Isolation and DISASSEMBLY and REPAIR.
CAUTION: NEVER TORQUE THE VALVE ASSEMBLY TO STOP ALEAK. YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FIRE EXTIN-GUISHERS COMPONENTS OR SEALING SURFACES.

5. Hydrostatic Test
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO THE HYDROSTATIC TEST.ACCURATELY FIND THE AMOUNT OF CYLINDER DIS-TORTION. DISCARD THE CYLINDER IF THE WALLS AREDANGEROUSLY THIN. DO NOT DISCARD THE CYLIN-DER IF THE THICKNESS IS CORRECT.
NOTE: Do the hydrostatic test by the proof pressure method speci-fied in the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) Pamphlet C-1. Test personnel must know the contents of CGA PamphletC-1 to help make an analysis of the results correctly. Thereare conditions when a cylinder must not be hydrostaticallytested. Refer to NFPA-10 for these conditions.
A. Prepare to do the hydrostatic test
(1) Remove the valve assembly and all internal parts from the fire extinguisher.Refer to DISASSEMBLY.
(2) Only test persons are permitted in the test area during hydrostatic tests.WARNING: CONCENTRATION OF COMPRESSED AIR OR UN-
WANTED MATERIAL MOVED BY COMPRESSED AIRCAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS. ALWAYS POINTCOMPRESSED AIR AWAY FROM PERSONS. USE APPLI-CABLE EYE PROTECTION TO PREVENT INJURY TOYOUR EYES.
(3) Clean the cylinder neck with dry air or nitrogen with a maximum pressure of30 psig (207 kPa).
(4) Install the hydrostatic test adapter (877635) in the cylinder neck.B. Hydrostatic Test Procedure
(1) Install the cylinder in the test setup shown in CGA Pamphlet C-1.(2) Fill the cylinder with water through the open test adapter (877635). When
the water begins to come out of the test adapter (this shows that all the airhas been removed from the cylinder), fully tighten the test adapter.
(3) Turn off the water supply.(4) Attach the pressure line of the test setup to the hydrostatic test adapter in
the cylinder neck.
(5) Pressurize the cylinder. Refer to Table 1, Specified Data, for the correct testpressure.

(6) Do the hydrostatic test. Refer to CGA Pamphlet C-1 and NFPA-10 for thecorrect procedures.
(7) Do a visual inspection of the cylinder. Look for any signs of distortion or leak-age. There must be no distortion or leakage and the test pressure must notdecrease.
(8) Release the air pressure and remove the cylinder from the test setup.(9) Use a locally approved method (tag, label, ink stamp, etc.) to write on the ex-
tinguisher the date the hydrostatic test was done. Do not metal stamp thedate onto the cylinder.

DISASSEMBLY
1. General
A. Do an inspection of the fire extinguisher before you disassemble it. Refer toCHECK.
B. Disassemble the fire extinguisher only as much as necessary to do the repairs.
C. Disassemble the fire extinguisher in the order given. See the applicable IPL fig-ure for the location of parts.
D. The fire extinguishers are nearly the same. Fire extinguisher 466040, IPL Figure1, is used to identify components, unless there is a difference in component loca-tion or procedures.
E. The necessary tools, fixtures, and equipment used to disassemble the fire extin-guisher are given in Table 301.
NOTE: An equivalent alternative can be used for the recharge kit.

2. Procedure
A. Make sure you have prepared the recharge kit. Refer to ASSEMBLY, paragraph5.
NOTE: The cooling bath/coil is not necessary when you remove thecontents of the cylinder.
B. Remove the contents as follows:

(1) To remove the hose assembly (IPL Figure 1, 80), turn the hose assembly fit-ting counterclockwise until it is released from the valve assembly (15).
(2) Remove the pull-tite seal (5) and pullout pin (10) from the valve assembly(15). Discard the pull-tite seal.
(3) For P/N 898052, remove the nozzle (IPL Figure 1B, 60) as follows:(a) Lift the lever and remove the retaining clip (65).(b) Remove the nozzle (60) with the nozzle o-ring (70). Discard the nozzle o-
ring.
(4) Remove the hose strap (IPL Figure 1, 85) from the cylinder (95).(5) Connect the recharge adapter (refer to Table 301 for the correct adapter) to
the valve assemby (15).(6) Secure the cylinder in a vise or other suitable holding fixture. The cylinder
must be in the vertical position.
(7) Make sure that the valves A, B, C, D, E, G, and H (Figure 701) are closed.(8) Use your hand to hold the lever (60) and handle (70) in the operate position.(9) Open valves D and E and fully remove all the contents of the cylinder (95).(10) Close valves D and E when the cylinder is empty.(11) Remove the fire extinguisher from the recharge setup.

C. Keep the lever (60) and handle (70) in the operate position while you turn thevalve assembly (15) counterclockwise to remove the valve assembly.
D. Remove the siphon tube and coupling assembly (20) and spring (25) as follows:(1) Hold the valve assembly (15) with one hand.(2) Push the siphon tube and coupling assembly in with the other hand while
you turn it 1/4 turn counterclockwise. The spring will fall out of the valve as-sembly as you move the siphon tube and coupling assembly away from thevalve assembly.
(3) For P/N 466090, turn the siphon tube and coupling assembly (IPL Figure1A, 55) counterclockwise until the coupling is released from the valve assem-bly (15).
E. To remove the stem assembly (IPL Figure 1, 30), with o-ring (35), lift the lever(60) and push the top of the stem assembly down. The stem assembly will fallout of the valve assembly. Discard the stem assembly and o-ring.
F. Remove the pressure gauge (45) and gauge o-ring (55) as follows:(1) Remove the gauge retaining clip (50).(2) Remove the gauge from the valve assembly (15).(3) Remove the gauge o-ring from the valve assembly. Discard the o-ring.
G. For P/N 466090, turn the pressure gauge (IPL Figure 1A, 85) counterclockwiseuntil the pressure gauge is released from the valve assembly (15).

F. Examine the inner surface of the cylinder. Refer to CGA Pamphlet C6.3. If yousee slight corrosion or unwanted material, turn the cylinder so the opening ispointed down on a soft surface. Tap the sides of the cylinder with a soft malletthat is not metal. Use clean, dry compressed air or nitrogen at a maximum pres-sure of 30 psig (207 kPa) to remove all moisture and unwanted material.
NOTE: If large amounts of corrosion are present, discard the cylinder.
4. Painting
WARNING: THE MATERIALS USED TO PAINT ARE FLAMMABLE.KEEP AWAY FROM OPEN FLAME. DO NOT BREATHTHE FUMES. USE THE MATERIALS IN AN AREA WITHGOOD AIRFLOW. WEAR EYE/FACE PROTECTION TOPREVENT INJURY.
A. Remove the valve assembly and all internal components from the cylinder. Referto DISASSEMBLY.
B. Seal the neck of the cylinder to keep paint off the threads.
NOTE: Do not remove the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label. It isnot procurable. Only the manufacturer is authorized to installthe UL label.
C. Use masking tape to cover the UL label and any other labels you do not want toremove.
D. Apply the primer and paint as specified in the manufacturers instructions.

CHECK
1. General
This section gives the inspections and checks necessary to find the condition of thefire extinguishers before and after repairs, assembly, and fill.
2. Definitions
A. The definitions that follow are applicable to this section.
(1) DentsDents are deformations of the cylinder caused by a blunt object and doesnot cause the wall thickness to be decreased.
(2) Cuts, Gouges, Digs, and ScratchesThese are damage which cause loss of wall thickness and are caused bysharp objects that cut into the metal.
(3) Corrosion(a) Corrosion is the loss of thickness by some corrosive effect. It usually
shows as general corrosion or pitting corrosion.
(b) General corrosion shows a uniform loss of wall thickness in a large area.(c) Pitting corrosion can be small and localized or large and scattered.(d) Line corrosion is a series of pits closely spaced which appear to be in
line. This condition is more serious than isolated pitting.
(4) BulgesBulges are irregular surface dimensions on part of the cylinder. Bulges usu-ally occur because of too much pressure or because the cylinder becametoo hot.
3. Inspection
A. Visually examine the fire extinguisher for damage, dents, scratches, gouges,nicks, and loose or damage components.
B. You must discard cylinders that have bulges.
C. You must discard cylinders with dents if the depth is more than 10% of the long-est dimension of the dent.

D. You must discard cylinders that have scratches with a depth of more than 0.004in. (0.010 cm) or a length of more than 4.0 in. (10.16 cm).
E. You must discard cylinders that have gouges/nicks with a depth of more than0.004 in. (0.010 cm).
F. You must discard cylinders that show signs of pitting corrosion or line corrosion.
G. You must discard cylinders that have large amounts of corrosion.
H. You must discard cylinders that have fire damage or signs that the cylinder wasnear too much heat.
I. You must discard cylinders that have damaged threads.
J. Repair or replace missing, loose, or damaged components, as necessary.
K. Examine the internal surface of the cylinder as follows:

(1) Use a boroscope, or mirror and light, to examine the internal surface of thecylinder for moisture, chips, oil, or other unwanted material.

(a) Cracks(b) Pitting corrosion or line corrosion(c) Large amounts of corrosion
L. Do the hydrostatic test if, after you visually examine the cylinder, you are not sureof its condition. Refer to TESTING and FAULT ISOLATION.

B. Assembly (466040 and 898052)NOTE: Do not apply any lubricant to the neck seal or valve assembly
threads.
(1) With the flat surface of the neck seal (40) facing the valve assembly (15), in-stall the neck seal over the threads of the valve assembly. Move the neckseal until it is in the space above the threads.
(2) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the stem o-ring (35).(3) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the top half of the
stem assembly (30).(4) Install the stem o-ring in the groove of the stem assembly (30).(5) Put the stem assembly (30) into the valve assembly (15).(6) Put the spring (25) into the coupling of the siphon and coupling assembly
(20).

(7) Move the valve assembly (15) over the siphon and coupling assembly (20)and spring (25). Push the valve assembly against the coupling and turn it1/4 turn clockwise.
CAUTION: DO NOT TORQUE THE VALVE ASSEMBLY INTO THECYLINDER WITH A WRENCH. IT IS NOT NECESSARYAND COULD DAMAGE THE NECK SEAL AND VALVE AS-SEMBLY. TIGHTEN WITH YOUR HAND ONLY.
(8) Install the valve assembly (15) with siphon and coupling assembly (20) andspring (25) into the cylinder (95). Tighten with your hand until the neck seal(40) and valve assembly are fully against the cylinder neck. Then tighten ap-proximately 20 degrees more.
NOTE: After you tighten the valve assembly with your hand, the faceof the pressure gauge will be aligned with the approximatecenter of the nameplate.
(9) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the gauge o-ring(55).
(10) Install the gauge o-ring (55) over the pressure gauge (45) stem.(11) Push the pressure gauge (45) into the valve assembly (15) gauge hole.(12) Push the retaining clip (50) into the slot above the gauge guard in the valve
assembly (15).4. Assembly (466090)
(1) With the flat surface of the neck seal (IPL Figure 1A, 80) facing the valve as-sembly (15), install the neck seal over the threads of the valve assembly.Move the neck seal until it is in the space above the threads.
(2) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the stem o-ring (75).(3) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the top half of the
stem assembly (70).(4) Install the stem o-ring (75) in the groove of the stem assembly (70).(5) Put the stem assembly (70) into the valve assembly (15).(6) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the coupling o-ring
(60).(7) Install the coupling o-ring (60) over the siphon tube assembly (55) coupling
until it against the coupling flange.

(8) Put the spring (65) into the coupling of the siphon and coupling assembly(55).
(9) Move the valve assembly (15) over the siphon and coupling assembly (55)and spring (65). Turn the siphon and coupling assembly clockwise andtorque it to 20 inch lbs.
(10) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the outer surface ofthe neck seal (80).
CAUTION: DO NOT TORQUE THE VALVE ASSEMBLY INTO THECYLINDER WITH A WRENCH. IT IS NOT NECESSARYAND COULD DAMAGE THE NECK SEAL AND VALVE AS-SEMBLY. TIGHTEN WITH YOUR HAND ONLY.
(11) Install the valve assembly (15) with siphon and coupling assembly (55) andspring (65) into the cylinder (110). Tighten with your hand until the neck seal(80) and valve assembly are fully against the cylinder neck. Then tighten ap-proximately 20 degrees more.
NOTE: After you tighten the valve assembly with your hand, the faceof the pressure gauge will be aligned with the approximatecenter of the nameplate.
(12) Apply a thin layer of Teflon paste to the threads of the pressure gauge (85).(13) Install the pressure gauge (85) into the valve assembly (15) gauge hole.
Make sure the gauge is pointed up.

5. Recharge Kit Preparation
A. Prepare the recharge kit (802380) as follows:WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT ALL COMPONENTS AND FITTINGS
ARE CORRECTLY TORQUED. MAKE SURE THAT THEFILL AREA HAS A GOOD AIRFLOW, AND FUMES ANDPRESSURE ARE BLED TO THE ATMOSPHERE. DO NOTLET THE EXTINGUISHING AGENT TOUCH YOUR SKIN.IF THE PRESSURE IS ACCIDENTALLY RELEASEDFROM THE CYLINDER, IT IS DANGEROUS TO PERSONSAND CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION: IF THE RECHARGE KIT WAS USED FOR AN EXTIN-GUISHING AGENT OTHER THAN HALON 1211 (CBrClF2),IT MUST BE FULLY BLOWN OUT WITH NITROGEN TOREMOVE ALL SIGNS OF THAT EXTINGUISHING AGENT.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE CYLINDER IS FULLY DRY BE-FORE YOU FILL THE CYLINDER, TO PREVENT CORRO-SION.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE ALL SUPPLY CYLINDER VALVES ARECLOSED BEFORE YOU SET UP THE RECHARGE KIT.
B. Connect the agent supply hose from valve A to valve B (Figure 702) on the mani-fold.
C. Connect the nitrogen supply hose to valve C on the manifold.
D. Connect the hose from the manifold to the inlet of the cooling-bath coil.
NOTE: The cooling bath and cooling coil are not necessary if theagent supply cylinder is not pressurized.
E. Connect the hose to the outlet of the cooling-bath coil.
F. Install the recharge adapter onto the cooling-coil outlet-hose. Refer to Table 701for the applicable recharge adapter.
NOTE: The cooling bath and cooling coil are not necessary if theagent supply cylinder is not pressurized.
G. Close valves B, C, D, E, G and H.
H. Fill an applicable container with dry ice and either kerosene or alcohol to make acooling bath. You can use cracked ice and water if other materials are not avail-able.

I. Put the coil from the recharge kit fully into the cooling solution with both ends ofthe coil clear of the solution.
NOTE: Make sure all of the fire extinguishing agent used before isflushed from the fill system before you connect it to the newextinguishing-agent supply. If you do not do this, contamina-tion of the filled cylinder could occur.
6. Fill Procedure
A. Fill the assembled fire extinguisher as follows:
(1) Put the empty fire extinguisher on the scale in the vertical position.NOTE: The extinguishing agent and the ambient temperature in the
fill area must be at approximately 70F (21C) for the fill pro-cedure to work correctly.
WARNING: THE RECHARGE ADAPTERS HAVE A PRESSURE RE-LEASE VALVE WHICH WILL AUTOMATICALLY OPER-ATE IF TOO MUCH PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THEFIRE EXTINGUISHER. IF THE PRESSURE RELEASE OP-ERATES, IMMEDIATELY CLOSE THE SUPPLY VALVES.FIND AND CORRECT THE CAUSE OF THE HIGH PRES-SURE BEFORE YOU CONTINUE TO FILL THE FIRE EX-TINGUISHER.
(2) Install the recharge adapter on the valve assembly (IPL Figure 1, 15).(3) For P/N 898052, use the nozzle retaining clip (IPL Figure 1B, 65) to keep
the recharge adapter in position.
(4) Push TARE to zero the scale.(5) Open valves A, B and E (Figure 701) to fill the cylinder with extinguishing
agent (refer to Table 1, Specified Data, for weight of the agent).(6) Close valves A, B, and E.
NOTE: The cooling bath/coil is not necessary to do the fill procedureif the halon supply-cylinder is not pressurized.
NOTE: The cooling coil keeps 0.50 to 0.70 lb (0.23 to 0.32 kg) of ex-tinguishing agent. You must make an allowance for this sothat the fire extinguisher will not weigh too much after it ispressurized with nitrogen.

(7) Remove the coil from the cooling solution.(8) After the cylinder pressure and temperature become stable, open valves C
and F.
(9) Adjust the regulator to the correct operating pressure. Refer to Table 1,Specified Data, for the correct operating pressure.
(10) Open valve E and monitor the fill-pressure gauge and the supply-pressuregauge until the two pressures are equal.
(11) Close valve E. Lift and shake the fire extinguisher for 30 seconds to causethe nitrogen to be absorbed into the extinguishing agent.
NOTE: A stable condition, where nitrogen is absorbed into the halon1211, is indicated when no change in the fill-pressure gaugeis seen as the cylinder is shaken.
(12) Do steps (10) and (11) again as necessary until the nitrogen is absorbedand the cylinder pressure becomes stable.
(13) Close valves C and F (Figure 701) when the fill gauge shows the correctpressure.
(14) Open valves C, D, and E to remove the pressure from the manifold andhoses.
(15) When the lines are depressurized, remove the recharge adapter from thefire extinguisher.
(16) Remove the fire extinguisher from the recharge kit setup.(17) Look at the pressure gauge (IPL Figure 1, 45). If it does not show the correct
operating pressure (refer to Table 1, Specified Data) when compared to thecharging pressure gauge (Figure 701), you must remove the extinguishingagent and replace the pressure gauge. Refer to DISASSEMBLY.
7. Halogen Leak Test
Do the halogen leak test. Refer to TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION.
8. Final Assembly
A. For P/N 466040, install the the hose assembly (IPL Figure 1, 80) on the valve as-sembly (15). Tighten with your hand.
B. For P/N 466090, install the hose assembly (IPL Figure 1A, 90) as follows:(1) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the hose o-ring (95).

(2) Install the hose assembly (90) on the valve assembly (15). Torque to ap-proximately 20 inch lbs.
C. For P/N 898052, install the nozzle (IPL Figure 1B, 60) as follows:(1) Apply a thin layer of grease (Parker Super O Lube) to the nozzle o-ring
(70).(2) Push the nozzle (60) into the valve assembly (15) discharge outlet until it is
fully against the outlet surface.
(3) Install the nozzle retaining-clip (65) in the slot on the side of the valve assem-bly.
D. Put the pull-out pin (IPL Figure 1, 10) through the holes in the lever (60) and han-dle (70).
E. Install the pull-tite seal (5) through the loop of the pull-out pin (10) and around thelever (60) and handle (70). See Figure 702 for the correct routing of the pull-titeseal.

9. Storage and Handling
WARNING: AN AMBIENT TEMPERATURE MORE THAN 120F (49C)CAN CAUSE THE CYLINDER TO BECOME LARGER. DONOT DROP THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. THE CYLINDERCAN BREAK AND CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS ANDDAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
A. You can lift and touch fire extinguishers at ambient temperatures of 50F to 70F(10C to 21C).
B. Keep the filled fire extinguishers in a clean, dry area at an ambient temperatureof 50F to 70F (10C to 21C).
NOTE: Filled fire extinguishers kept for more than 12 years must behydrostatically tested before you use them.
C. Carefully examine the fire extinguishers and the cardboard boxes before youmove or put them on each other.
NOTE: Unless total information is available that is applicable to ambi-ent storage temperatures, persons must touch the fire extin-guishers as if they were kept at high temperatures.
D. Keep the filled fire extinguisher in a clean and dry area. You must keep the fireextinguishers in an applicable sealed cardboard box so the fire extinguisher willnot be open to humidity, dust, or other unwanted materials. Keep the filled fire ex-tinguishers in an area with the temperature between 50F and 70F (10C to21C).
10. Shipping Instructions for Filled Fire Extinguishers
A. Put the fire extinguisher in an applicable cardboard box that contains materialsthat will absorb shock. Make sure that the fire extinguisher does not touch thecardboard box.
B. Identify the cardboard box with an applicable label. Refer to applicable shippingregulation in Table 702.
C. Ship the cardboard box as specified in the applicable shipping regulation in Table702, Labeling and Shipping Regulations.
