KID WITNESS NEWS 2010 FACT SHEET Page | 1 Kid Witness News (KWN) is a global educational program sponsored by Panasonic. It was initiated by Panasonic Malaysia as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program on education in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. KWN is a video education program that requires the students to write, direct, act, edit and produce a 5 minute video based on the theme chosen. Participating students will learn and experience the process of video production, from finding an idea for the storyboard, to assigning roles to each participating student such as cameraman, audio, editor, scriptwriter, director, anchorperson and others. Their views will be reflected through the messages conveyed in their videos as they see it through their own eyes. Students and teachers will undergo a training program conducted by industry experts in the film and media in order to prepare and equip them with the basic techniques in preparing a storyboard, scriptwriting, camera work, sound, and editing. Panasonic provides a semi-professional HD camera and a compete set of video equipment from media storage, tripod, earphone, microphone, zoom microphone to editing software. PARTICIPATION Participation is open to all government schools nationwide. Students from the age of 10 to 15 years old. BACKGROUND

KWN is a video education program initiated and supported by Panasonic on a global scale. First began in 1989 in the United States of America and has since spread worldwide. To date, more than 130,000 children from 617 schools in 25 countries globally have

participated in the KWN program worldwide. In 2004, the competition was taken to the rest of the World when an international category

was created for the first time. In early 2007, the KWN Global Contest was kick started and was open to videos from all

participating countries to keep up with the constantly increasing number of participants. In Asia-Oceania region, to date there are 7 countries participating consisting of Singapore,

Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Vietnam.

KWN IN MALAYSIA

Panasonic Malaysia first introduced KWN in 2005 and is now in its sixth year. Entry for KWN program is through online registration and storyboard submission. To date KWN has attracted the participation of more than 450 schools with 3000 students

nationwide. The KWN program in 2005 had 40 schools that submitted 40 storyboards, and 15 schools

made it to the finals at the KWN 2005 National Contest and Awards Ceremony. KWN 2006 saw a big jump in the number of schools that submitted their storyboards. As

many as 70 schools registered and 100 storyboards were submitted. 30 schools made to the final.

In 2007, this program had attracted the registration from 100 schools with more than 150 storyboards submitted and 30 schools attended the training and 15 schools made it to the final national awards ceremony.

In 2008, 150 schools registered with more than 170 storyboards submitted and 46 schools attended the training and 24 schools made it to the final national awards ceremony.

In 2009, 220 schools registered with more than 300 storyboards submitted and 70 schools were selected to attend the training. 30 schools made to the final.

KWN 2010 Themes

Themes for 2010 are Ecology, Communication and My Hometown Storyboard Submission

This year witnessed 320 storyboards submitted by 250 schools nationwide based on the theme. Storyboard Selection

After meticulously reviewing each storyboard, 72 storyboards from 68 schools nationwide were selected to undergo training and participate in KWN 2010 based upon the storylines and its relevance to either one of the themes given. KWN Training Camp

A 5-day KWN 2010 Training Camp was conducted from May 06 till May 10 for a total of 144 students and 68 teachers from 68 schools nationwide. Trainers

Trainers and facilitators for the KWN 2010 Training Camp consisted of staff from Panasonic Malaysia together with professional from film, media, TV stations, university as well as renowned figures from the film and media industry such as Othman Hafsham, Normah Nordin and Syazli Imri. KWN Equipment

Panasonic provides equipment such as semi-professional broadcasting camera, editing software, microphones, camera tripod, headphone and other accessories including students’ and teachers’ handbooks to participating schools Video Production

Students to produce a 5 minute video clip based on one of the themes chosen. Video Format

Based on the theme, students to prepare video in the form of drama, documentary, news or public service announcement. Video Submission

All videos to be submitted by 30 August 2010 Video Judging

Video judging for the National contest will be held in September Panel of Judges

Panel of judges comprise of KWN trainers and others to be advised.
