CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE:

I must have had oodles of fun, because the time has flown SO QUICKLY, and as my mom always

used to say, “Time flies when ...!”

Seriously though, I cannot believe we are at the end of another year at VMC. I have to admit my

hopes for the club this year did not materialize; my goal was to increase membership and, in so

doing, to bring in younger members. On both counts, I can’t say I was successful!

We had to say goodbye to a list of members that sadly was too long. May our friends and

motorcycling buddies continue with our past-time in the here-after, and put in a good word for us

mortals as we take the twisty, slippery curves on our journey to meet them again. The knowledge

and skill they brought to the club must not be lost to our movement and I hope that the future will

see a collaborative effort to document and retain skills needed to maintain our machinery long

into the future.

As we go into our AGM, I must indicate I will not be available to serve on the committee for the

coming year. Work commitments make this impossible although I promise to handover to the

new committee and assist during the next month or so. It has been an honour to serve VMC over

the past year and I thank you all for the privilege. My fervent hope for the future is that the

Vintage movement continues and strengthens the fraternity around our passion.

May the year ahead be filled with health, happiness and motorcycle journeys.

Regards,

Ken

OBITUARIES

Tony Beswick

Tony was an avid motor car enthusiast with an added interest in aircraft and old clocks. He was

also interested in history both local and of the country of this birth, England. He kept up to date

with the happenings in England and loved to talk about the countryside lie there. In his own quite

way, he was one of the main organisers of the very successful Riley Rendezvous in 2014 and will

be missed on this year’s event in Cape Town, driving Doris, his 1928 War Dept tourer.

Tony had a vast collection of books covering many subjects and he enjoyed spending his time in

his library/office. A competitor in many DJ’s and Natal Classic rallies which he enjoyed and on

which he will be missed, rest in peace Tony

Ken and Barbara Sink

Piet Maas

Piet Maas Born 1932 in Holland near the Belgian border on a farm. He started working in a bicycle

shop after the War and was soon fixing and riding Motorcycles too!

He travelled to South Africa on one of the Liberty ships and took the train north to start working

for Sasol in Vereeniging. He learned to fit and turn and spent most of his life in this profession

building machines and racing cars on the oval track weekends. He raced in the UK representing SA.

He was known to completely rebuild cars even a Porsche and many older Motorcycles which he

preferred.

He retired on his pension to enjoy his hobby and rebuilt the Precision for the VMC club which then

featured at the Nairobi Concours show. His last projects were a 1914 Clyno and a 1916 Autoped.

Piet helped many people with restorations, spares and practical advice. But his secret was a

workaholic personality and not finding anything too hard, spending everyday in his workshop.

Many of his bikes are still around and many of us will always look up to him as the role model in

South Africa when it comes to building and not over restoring a bike. He will be missed by many

many friends, his widow, daughter and granddaughter.

There will be a wake on the 3rd September at the Wheels on the Vaal show, Sylviavale Heritage

Museum and a short bike run and raising a beer to his memory!

PAST EVENTS

JHB. Century Run 2017

Robert Pattison-Emms

On the 23rd

of July. Twenty-six (26) riders, (one driver) and almost as many supporters, turned up

for the 2017 Jhb. Century Run. At the Rhino & Lion Reserve in Kromdraai, west of Johannesburg.

Postponed from an earlier date, that had to be cancelled due to a clash with a bicycle event held in

the same area. This year it was the turn of the VMC to host the event. The venue was chosen for

its suitability for older and veteran motorcycles and cars. In spite of the mid-winter date, the

weather was perfect for a warm sunny, leisurely ride in the countryside.

Breakfast or coffee at the Neck & Deck restaurant was followed by the ride and an el fresco lunch

on the deck, while viewing the Giraffe and Bison. (A strange combination, --- American Bison and

African Giraffe?) Wives and girlfriends seemed to enjoy the social get-together while the men and

one girl rode off. None seemed to grumble or even notice that they were gone!

It was a non-competitive event so there were no winners or losers. Just a lot of very interesting

machinery, a pleasant ride, conversation and lunch. Only one car participated but Eric Mc Quillion

(the driver) was excused as it was, a 1965 Sunbeam ….. car!

More, interesting cars are welcome next time …. Please!!

Kevin Robertson totalled 161 years on his beautiful 1936 Velocette.

Martin Davis --- a 157 years on a 1929 Ariel.

Page 6: KICKSTART August 2017 · 4 OBITUARIES Tony Beswick Tony was an avid motor car enthusiast with an added interest in aircraft and old clocks. He was also interested in history both

6

Jon Lewis a --- 155 years on a 1929 Norton.

Ralph Pitchford a --- 146 years on a 1926 Triumph.

Steve Helm brought the oldest bike a 1924 Sunbeam.

The event aims to attract very old bikes and give them an outing to blow out all the cobwebs and

rusty bicycles.

“All in all” a good day out, was had by all?

I am open to comments, criticisms, and suggestions for a possible alternative venue, - if desired,

for next time. Speak to either, me or Ken Wiggins.

Thanks to all who participated and to Ken for his assistance.

Magnum Rally

Kevin Walton

The Magnum rally took place over three day starting on Thursday morning the 10th

August and

ending on Saturday afternoon the 12th

. All competitors stayed at the Numbi Hotel in Hazyview and

therefore started each morning from the hotel parking lot.

Each day the competitors followed a different route and returned back to the Numbi Hotel where

ample refreshments were acquired and social activities commenced.

Day 1

We left the hotel and headed for Sabie on the R536. The route schedule directed us towards

Graskop but diverted us to Pilgrims Rest. This road is a twisty 14km pass that demands slow speed

which presented a fair challenge. After passing the Pilgrims rest turn off we headed toward

Mashishing/Ohrigstad. After passing through Ohrigstad we were directed to Blyderivierspoort

where we had a lunch break. After having a very enjoyable meal we headed in the direction of

Graskop /White River. We went down the pass outside of Graskop at slow speed due to poor road

condition and headed back to Hazyview where we ended the day’s rally at the hotel. The total

distance travelled was 262.32km.

Day 2

We rode up to Graskop on the R535 and proceeded through to God’s Window where we stopped

to view the valley and have a leg-stretcher. The route took us back to Graskop where we turned

off to Sabie on the R532, where we were diverted to White River along the R537. The lunch stop

was arranged at Roodewal Toy Shed owned by Dawie Wille a local farmer. He kindly

accommodated us in his hanger by moving his two aero plane and about 20 classic cars out. We

had a sit down meal which was provided by the Numbi hotel in the form of picnic boxes. Dawie’s

7

wife runs a small weaving business where they weave all-sorts of mats on antique weaving loams.

His generosity and effort to accommodate us was well appreciated. After the lunch break we

headed towards Montrose/Sadwala caves. Once down the pass there was a planned rest break at

the a mountain bike trail and camping spot. We returned to Sabie after climbing the mountain

pass and headed towards Hazyview via the 22. The total distance travelled was 280.75km.

Day 3

We headed towards Sabie on the R536 and were diverted to Kiepersol along a very bumpy and

patched road for about 12km. We turned onto the R40 and went on to White River. From White

River we proceeded to Sabie then Graskop and back to Hazyview where we ended the rally at The

Pioneer’s Grill steakhouse. We enjoyed lunch and returned to the hotel. The total distance

travelled was 183.86km.

The rally was set out to take us over Long Tom Pass on one of the three days. This was changed at

the last moment due to an alternate route being closed and heavy truck traffic being diverted over

the pass.

The organising team did an outstanding job in the planning, last minute changes to the schedule

and the arranging of everyone’s needs. The Hotel accommodation and all set meals including the

lunch at the Roodewal Toy Box was once again of the highest standards. Road condition was good

in general with certain stretched that were poor. Traffic was very light with the odd truck using the

respective routes.

There were a total of 52 competitors of which only 19 solo motorcycles and one combination took

part. Only three bikes were trailered in of which one was involved in an accident (Gavin Hollis fell

off going into White River on the last day and got hurt). The oldest car to take part in the event

was a 1928 Bentley with a 6 litre engine. This car surely assisted in keeping the Lowveld petrol

sales up over the rally days.

A total distance of 726.93km was rallied.

Well done and congratulations to Leo Middleburg, his team and to the POMC for the excellent and

professionally organised event. Thanks to the Numbi Hotel for their assistance in making this rally

comfortable and affordable.

Congratulations to all the prize winners - (see final results).

The only problem with the rally once again was the shortage of biker participants!

I certainly hope there will be more enthusiasm from our fellow bikers next year.

Sunday Run to Wild Cave Adventures 22 October 2017

Robert Pattison-Emms

A few years ago we had a very successful ride to the Old Kromdraai Gold mine.

In a similar vein. What about a run to the Wild Cave Adventure venue in the same area?

As this will include a bit of mild abseiling, it is for the adventurous and the reasonably fit.

Entry to the cave is by way of ropes (belay) controlled by qualified guides. Once the group get to

the bottom, there is a one and a half hour adventure by torch light. This requires a bit of climbing

and crawling etc. (Bring a pair of old gardening gloves if you do not like getting your hands dirty!)

To finish there is a climb out of the cave, up a steel rope ladder.

All overalls, helmets, torches and harnesses are supplied.

The standard cost per adult is normally R450.00 pp. (Inclusive of equipment) but for a large group

the organisers (the Norquoy family --- son and daughter-in –law of the late Barbara and Ginger

Norquoy will give the VMC a discounted rate of R350.00 pp.

We could ride to the nearby Bush-Wackers pub and restaurant for coffee, leave our bikes,

complete the adventure and return for lunch. (Lunch is not included in the Cave Adventure fee.)

Have a look at www.wildcaves.co.za and see if it is for you. We will need a fair number of

participants so friends, wives and girlfriends are welcome.

CLUB NIGHT -24 July 2017

Ian Storer

A good and interesting night, 33 people braved the cold to view the bikes on display.

Apologies received from Jon Alison, Mike Ward, Gawie Nienaber and others.

Welcome to NEW MEMBER Mark Broady, and Beau a visitor interesting in restoring and/or riding

a classic motorcycleThe first bike was a 1200 BMW off roader and was presented by Nina & Torrin

in order to promote their new business “Adventure Riders South Africa”

They showed a short clip of the last couple of events held at the KTM head quarters in Sunninghill,

and gave us a run down on what can be expected from them in the rest of the year. They will

organise a total of 6 events around the country & more if the demand is there. They cater mainly

for riders with appropriate bikes of 600cc or more. Web site www.adventureriders.co.za

Eddie Germiquet once again presented a pristine bike. This time it was a 1948 Triumph Speed

Twin.

Eddie entertained with his tale of acquisition of this bike and his later adventures described

elsewhere in Kickstart.

BIKE FEATURE – BMW R90s (Part 2)

By Eddie Germiquet

(This follows on from Eddie’s story in the June 2017 edition of Kickstart)

Some memorable trips and experiences

The bike had been with me for barely 2 months when the first trip with Lauren as pillion was

undertaken. The purpose of this August/Sept 1979 trip was to visit the congregations of East

London and Adelaide with a view to a call to be their minister. Our arrival on a motorcycle did not

appear to put either of thecongregations off as they both offered us a call. In addition to the two

detachable panniers, a small but removable backrest was made for Lauren’s added comfort. All

the wind proofing clothing that we had bought came into great use for snow blanketed the Maluti

Mountains as we skirted Fouriesberg and Ficksberg. A memorable moment was our brief stop in

Fort Beaufort while on our way through to Adelaide. We were so intrigued by the sight of the two

cannons in front of the museum that we could not resist a photo. It was a Saturday afternoon and

hardly a person was to be seen. We wondered what on earth could motivate people who lived in

such a town. Little did we know that 5 years later we would spend 17 years in this town, many of

which were lived in a house that is just to the left of the photograph; more or less in the line of fire

of the far canon.

After the visit to Adelaide we made use of the added leave to travel along the Garden Route to

Cape Town then up the West Coast and inland to the Augrabies Falls, before returning to Jhb,

altogether atrip of about 3500kms. The route up the West Coast included the Pickenierskloof Pass,

the Niewoudt Pass and the Cedaberg Pass for a stopover of two nights at the Sandrift Camping site

in the Cedaberg which in those days consisted of only one tap and a lonely pit latrine. As a

causeway had not yet been built, the icy waters of the Dwars River had to be forded (32° 29’ 16”S;

19° 16’ 03”E). Unsure of the depth of the river and whether the bike’s engine would be swamped,

Eddie requested Lauren to remove her shoes and test the waters by first negotiating the river on

foot. Lauren willingly did as requested and it was observed that Eddie could then safely ride the

bike across. However, on reflection later that evening Lauren’s indignation rose as it dawned on

her that she had been sent ahead to see if it would be safe for the bike. Eddie’s attempts to

explain that if she was swept away at least the bike and Eddie could still get home, but that if the

bike was swept away, neither of us could get home, were not well received.

Page 12: KICKSTART August 2017 · 4 OBITUARIES Tony Beswick Tony was an avid motor car enthusiast with an added interest in aircraft and old clocks. He was also interested in history both

12

Another memorable occasion was the night spent in our little tent at the Vanrynsdorp municipal

camping site. In the middle of the night a howling gale began to blow and threatened to not only

pull the tent off its fasteners but also to sand blast everything in sight. In the early hours of the

morning it was felt that the tent could not survive much longer and everything including the tent

was taken into the public facilities to sit it out till the morning. A little while later the kind manager

of the site arrived with a key to a bungalow. He explained that this terrible wind only blew once or

twice a year. When he heard it start up in the night he thought of us in our little tent and realized

that it would not survive. Once on our way, the ride from Vanrynsdorp to the foot of the

spectacular Vanryns Pass was done at an angle of about 20° to the right in order to counter the

ongoing and mercilessly fierce gale from the south which had already rudely interrupted the

previous night

The joys as well as bracing aspects of motorcycling is that both the landscape as well as the

elements impact on the senses in a more direct way than when enclosed in a car, quite a

foreboding experienced when heading into the mother of all storms.

A menacing wall of black thunderstorm clouds was encountered in Jan. 1981 on the secondary

road linking the then Wankey (now Hwange) to Mlibizi at the western end of Lake Kariba.

Fortunately, on this occasion the dirt road veered to the left just beyond the crest of the hill and

we were spared the anticipated wind and water lashing to which we had resigned ourselves.

The longest journey undertaken was a 6500km three week round trip from East London to the

Victoria Falls and Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe in January 1981. During such long trips, Lauren

did not remain mindlessly idle while seated hour after hour on the pillion. We found that we could

enjoy quite fruitful discussions using a mixture of morse and semaphore. Lauren would tap me on

the leg and point to something of interest and I would then nod in understanding, or give a

thumbs up, and visa versa. Another technique that Lauren developed was to read paperbacks. She

found that these could be held securely when folded back on themselves. Even when I stopped

Lauren would just continue reading for she often became totally engrossed in a novel or magazine.

It was always a source of amusement to see the expressions of amazement on the faces of people

we passed when they realized that the passenger on the motorcycle was reading. The final

technique to while away the boredom was for Lauren to nestle against me and to fall asleep. In

this way I was always aware that she was sleeping and I could ensure that she did not fall off by

keeping her well positioned in the hollow of my back.

We did discuss the possibility of Lauren doing some knitting but then abandoned the idea as

impractical. What would happen if she dropped her ball of wool?” we wondered. In addition we

feared that a sudden application of the brakes would result in Eddie being stabbed in the back by

her knitting needles.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

(News from Martin Davis)

On my way 'home' (mountain village some where in the Kalkapen Nature reserve) after the

Austrian MotoGP at Spielberg I met a local chap who commented at the local watering hole on the

KTM Tee shirts we were wearing and said he is also a keen motorcyclist but collects and rides 'old

timers'. 'Old timers' refers to vintage vehicles in this case not the opposite sex.

Over the next 2 hours we flattened a few pints chatted non stop and looked through photos of his

bikes dug out from the boot of his car. Helmut turned out to be avid knowledgable enthusiast

primarily collecting big 4 stroke Zundapps in all manner of guises including a Green Elephant with a

few other makes thrown in for good measure. Turns out that his close friend has a '29 Ariel the

same as mine along with a '30 Ariel Sloper. Each of us digging up a photo on our phones to make

the comparisons. Turns out there are a lot of British bikes in Austria with even a big supplier of

parts for them. Before the evening was over I had been invited to go back to Austria in mid Sept

and/or mid Oct for two big shows of old timers that take place around the popular lakes of

Grundle See, Bad Ischel and St Wolgang. I am sorely tempted.

Below is a list of links to various web sights supplied by Helmut. His English is far better than my

German, better than a lot of English people I might add.

Best regards

Martin
