Warriors hold high aspirationsfurther this year by winning their firstdistrict title since 2001.

“When you first start off in August, everyone has high aspirations,” saidWestern Coach Mike Zdebski. “Ourkids are no different. You always go inwith a very positive attitude all theway up until that first game.”

Western will be part of the newKensington Lakes ActivitiesAssociation (KLAA) North Division, where the Warriors will be matchedup with their Walled Lake rivals,Northern and Central, as well asLakeland and Waterford Ketteringand Mott.

“It’s a whole different thing for ourcommunity,” Zdebski said. “I thinkthe new conference is a good thingand should be very competitive.”

Most of the Warriors’ experiencewill be on offense, with eight startersreturning for 2008.

Leading the way will be junior

Sam Welch, who will start at quarter-back for a third consecutive season.

“He has the potential to be asgood as any high school quarterbackin the state,” Zdebski said. “He’sintelligent and a hard worker andmakes the most of every ability thathe has.”

Welch’s main target will be slotreceiver Gilvanni Johnson, playingoffense for the first time.

“He’s a very dynamic player, andhe’s the spark plug on the offensebecause he’s going to make someplays,” Zdebski said.

Team captain David Menoian willalso be a key wideout, while EdisonVushaj will play tight end.

Anchoring the offensive line willbe Alexander Roji, a 6-5, 270-poundsenior.

“We’re a shotgun spread offense, like you would see at the University of

Western Coach Mike Zdebski has his Warriors striving to make the kind of individual choices that are in the best interest of the team. He said if his play-ers can achieve that goal, “the wins will follow.” (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)

Florida,” Zdebski said.On defense, Vushaj looks have

another big season at the linebackerspot, where he has been dominant.

“He’s taken charge of the team, he’svery vocal and doing a great job, just asall of our kids are,” Zdebski said.

Joining him will be senior line-backer Zack Gattan and returningsenior defensive end Brandon Shafou.

Johnson will also play at corner-back, his primary position.

“We’re a three-deep team ondefense,” Zdebski said. “We’re ayoung squad.”

But when it comes to goals for theseason, Zdebski has a clear perspec-tive.

“Our goal is for players to makeindividual choices that are in the bestinterest of the team and if they takecare of that, the wins will follow,” hesaid. ❏

alled Lake Western’s footballteam has made five straightplayoff appearances, but always

seems to run into the wrong team atthe wrong time in the post-season tour-nament.

The Warriors’ last playoff win camein 2005 against North Farmington, butin the last few years they have seentheir quest for a district title end withlosses to South Lyon, Brother Rice,Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Walled LakeCentral, and to Huron Valley Lakelandlast season.

Western finished 2007 as theWestern Lakes Activities Association(WLAA) Western Division champions, and the Warriors hope to go one step

Vikings focused on redemptionterback and team captain Cory Davis, who started two games last season.

“Cory is cool and calm at all times, and he keeps the team focused andcentered,” Meyer said.

In front of him in the Wing-Toffense will be Ryan Daul, who willsee some time at running back afterplaying primarily as an offensive line-man last season.

“We had a kid named Brian Stollawho also switched and ran for 1,200yards in his senior year of 2006, sowe’ve had a lot of success with thatover the last couple years,” Meyersaid. “Ryan is one of the emotionalleaders on the team and is beloved byhis fellow teammates and coaches. He gives us an uplift during the hard-est times.”

Ryan Gregory will be another run-ning back to watch. Meyer said hebrings speed and a lot of athleticism.

Paving the way on the offensive

line will be guard Kyle Sisler, a 6-4,250-pound, three-year starter thatMeyer describes as the team’sstrongest player, along with tackleAndrew Lietke.

On the defensive side, the Vikingswill run an eight-man front, led bytwo dangerous cornerbacks in juniorand returning starter Ryan Servelloand senior John Lovelace.

Gregory and Daul will also line upas linebackers along with senior AlexMichal.

On special teams, Central will relyon senior kicker Brad Lyons, who isalso the captain of Central’s soccerteam and kicked a 51-yard field goallast season. He is also a Division Irecruit, being scouted by schoolssuch as the University of Kentucky.

This will also be the first year forthe Vikings in the new KensingtonLakes Activities Association (KLAA).

Walled Lake Central Coach Bob Meyer has his Vikings working hard to get back on track after a frustrating 2-7 finish in 2007. He said the team wantsto return to the playoffs and “cause as much damage as we possibly can.” (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)

Central is in the North Division, whichsets the stage for what is sure to besome intense contests against arearivals.

“I think it’s great for our kids, sincethis is the area in which they live andthey meet the other players in thecommunity,” Meyer said. “Theyalways talk about which program isbetter and now we have the opportuni-ty to settle this once and for all.”

The Vikings will once again kickofftheir season at Eastern MichiganUniversity against a tough South Lyonteam in the Big Day Prep Showdown.

“We want to win, represent, andhave a great game to show every-body that the KLAA is the best foot-ball conference in the state,” Meyersaid. “Making the playoffs is alwaysour focus. Once we get in, we want tocause as much damage as we possi-bly .”

he 2007 season was a tough pillto swallow for Walled LakeCentral football players, coach-

es and fans; and the Vikings are focusedon one thing this year: redemption.

Central finished a disappointing 2-7last season, one year after winning adistrict title and finishing 9-3.

“Getting back to our winning tradi-tion has been the sole focus for ourteam,” said Central Head Coach BobMeyer. “We made the playoffs the pre-vious two years and thought we hadeverything going in the right directionand somewhere along the lines, focuswas lost (in 2007). But not anymore. We’re working hard to get it back.”

New era begins for Northern

The Knights of Walled Lake Northern are learning that new Head Coach Brett Moore expects all the little things tobe done right. Moore said his players have been receptive to what he wants from them. (Spinal Column Newsweeklyphoto/Amy K. Lockard)

he Brett Moore era has officiallybegun at Walled Lake Northern. After coaching for the past eight

years at Lapeer East, Clio andMemphis, Moore will now lead theKnights and looks to start a winning tra-dition.

“We are basically starting fromground zero,” he said. “There’s a motto Iuse: ‘You crawl before you walk, youwalk before you jog, and you jog beforeyou sprint,’ and that’s what we’re goingto do.”

Northern’s program began in 2003,and its best season came in 2005 with a5-4 record. But, the Knights were win-less last season and their former headcoach, Mike Fras, resigned at the end ofthe year for personal reasons after beingthe head coach since the inception of theprogram.

Now, Moore has the chance to moldthe Knights with his own vision.

“There’s little battles to fight,” hesaid. “Everywhere I’ve ever gone I’vehad to build, and so far they’ve beenreally receptive to what I want andthey’re learning what I expect out ofthem.

“I expect to go hard all the time andjog on and off the practice field — the lit-tle things,” Moore added. “I expect thelittle things to be done right. That’s whatwe’re stressing.”

According to Moore, his team willrun a spread offense 100 percent out ofthe shotgun, with multiple formations.

At press time there was an ongoingbattle for the quarterback positionbetween juniors Adam Chuchla andJason Tucker, and Moore said there wasno clear-cut starter.

The Knights also have a strong groupof running backs made up of TerrellGoode, Matt Janas, Aaron Kapeluch andJasper Brown.

“Everyone is learning as we’regoing,” Moore said.

On the defensive side, the Knightswill run a 4-4/4-3 hybrid and bring stuntsfrom different angles to hopefully createsome turnovers, according to Moore.

The defensive line will be led by line-backers Joey Ventimiglia and ZachLeinonen.

Goode will also play cornerback, along with Bo Brown, while junior JakeHillenberg is expected to step up as adefensive tackle.

Another bonus for Moore is that theKnights will be competing in the newKensington Lakes Activities Association

Fox resigned at the end of last sea-son after eight years, and Hill washired as head coach after working asan assistant during Fox’s tenure.

Hill has the task of turning arounda Milford team that was 4-5 last sea-son following a two-year period inwhich it went 19-5 and won two dis-trict titles and the 2006 KensingtonValley Conference (KVC) crown.

“It will take kids having greatteam chemistry, working and playinghard for each other and believing inthe things that we’re doing,” he said.“If they keep coming together, wehave the possibility of success in frontof us.”

Milford’s main catalyst will be sen-ior Kyle Podvin, the 2007 KVC specialteams player of the year. He has beena two-way starter for the last threeyears at running back and corner-

back, as well as Milford’s primarykick returner.

The offensive line will be headedup by senior guard Jake Thompson(6-feet, 245 pounds), and linemenDavid Owens (senior), James Cote(junior) and Rocky Mikulec (senior).

They will be protecting seniorquarterback Steve Buglione. Hismain target will be senior receiverCarter Fox, who stands at 6-3.

“We’re a shotgun spread-optionoffense,” Hill said. “We spread it out,we run the ball, we run some optionsand we throw some play-action in andgo from there.”

Eagles hungry for more successAssociation (KLAA) conference andgo further in the playoffs.

“We’re looking forward to (theKLAA) because all those schools havegreat traditions and geographically itmakes sense, where you’re now com-peting with people that are within acloser proximity to your school so youcan have more rivalries,” Maltesesaid.

The Eagles have seven returningstarters on the 2008 offensive squad, led by three-year starting quarter-back Blake Heiman. He passed for1,340 yards and 15 touchdowns in2007.

“I believe he’s one of the betterfootball players in Oakland County,”Maltese said.

Protecting him on the offensiveline will be Dan Schroeter, a 6-4, 235-pound senior lineman, and seniorguard Josh Mulligan.

Carrying the rock will be senior

wingback Matt Rall and junior half-back Jacob Rohde.

“Both have shifty moves and arevery quick,” Maltese said.

Heiman’s main target will be ClintPenokie, who had 30 receptions for511 yards and eight touchdowns lastseason. He’ll also play cornerback.According to Maltese, Penokie has agreat pair of hands and speed.

“Our offense operates out of theWing-T base and we distribute the ballequally to our running backs andquarterback and try to establish theplay-action,” Maltese said.

The defensive line will have sixreturning starters, and will beanchored by Lee Lopez, a 6-3, 230-pound senior end who had nine sackslast year.

Also returning are senior insidelinebackers Max Hill and JoshMulligan, who combined for 131 tack-les during the 2007 season.

Huron Valley Lakeland emerged from 13 straight losing seasons to go 6-4 in 2006 and 8-3 in 2007, a run that featured the team’s first playoff victorysince 1982. Coach John Maltese plans to distribute the ball equally under the Wing-T offensive scheme. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K.Lockard)

Joining the team at outside line-backer will be Anthony Glass, a seniortransfer student from Garden City.

Before starting KLAA play, theEagles have two tough early games, including the home opener againstGrand Blanc and a trip to Canton.

“I think it’s a very demandingschedule,” Maltese said. “GrandBlanc is one of the largest schools inMichigan so they have a large talentpool to pull from, and we’re not look-ing past that game. I know Canton hasbeen a powerhouse for the last 12years.”

Maltese said he hopes this is theyear that Lakeland establishes itselfas one of the top teams in the area.

“I’d like to see them continue whatthey’ve built upon the last coupleyears, and it all starts with taking onepractice and one game at a time,” hesaid. ❏

Opportunities excite Captainsto start fresh this year by movingfrom the Oakland ActivitiesAssociation (OAA) to the newKensington Lakes ActivitiesAssociation (KLAA) North Division.

There, Kettering will face not onlyarch-rival Waterford Mott, but allthree Walled Lake schools and HuronValley Lakeland.

“We’re real excited to be in thisleague,” Topie said. “There’s goodfootball and tradition there. Theschools are much closer and thereare opportunities to create rivalriesthat will last a long time.”

On offense, the Captains haveeight starters returning, led by seniorquarterback and team captain KevinTruitt, who threw for 1,200 yards and11 touchdowns while starting all ninegames last season.

“Kevin is 6-7, 235 pounds and canthrow the ball,” Topie said.

Truitt will be protected by fourreturning starters on the offensiveline: seniors Nick Bohon, Tyler Wadeand John West, and junior TylerBedgood.

“They anchor down a pretty bigoffensive line. I think they average275 pounds between the four ofthem,” Topie said.

Running back duties will be splitbetween seniors Chris Smith andJosh Reyes and juniors BrandonClingan and Ryan Dingman.

Topie added that he’s looking to fillsome holes at the wide receiver slots.

“Our offense is very balanced andour line is going to allow us to run theball very effectively,” he said.

On defense, the Captains will be

led by linebackers Tyler Wale andJosh Blowers, along with DerrickVickery and Reyes at defensive back.

Smith will also see action as adefensive lineman, while junior VinceMurdock is expected to step up atlinebacker.

“We run a very aggressive attack-ing style defense, with lots of move-ment and action up front,” Topie said.“We definitely rely on speed and ath-leticism over size.”

With the tools in place, theCaptains look to chart a new courseand reach the promised land in 2008,according to Topie.

Captains want to improve on that bysimply not thinking about it.

Our No. 1concern isn’t what our record is goingto be. We’re having fun, and as a resultof that I think we’ll be successful.”

Our Lady begins ‘reloading’

Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes Coach Mike Boyd has less than a handful of players returning on both the offen-sive and defensive squads. He said the Lakers’ bevy of new players will be expected to perform to the best of theirability and duplicate what their predecessors have achieved. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)

fter finishing 9-3 and winning itssixth straight district title lastyear, Our Lady of the Lakes

Coach Mike Boyd knows his 2008 teamwill be hard-pressed to match last sea-son’s achievements.

“If we could duplicate last year, itwould be a great success,” he said.“We’re predominately freshmen andsophomores this year. We lack a whole lotof experience, size, and speed that we’vehad in the past. We’re not in a rebuilding, but a reloading type of situation.”

However, Boyd is also not one forexcuses.

“We have a whole lot of expectationsaround here,” he said. “We’ve beenspoiled by success, so we don’t want todo any worse. Our kids are expected toperform to the best of their ability andduplicate what the kids have done inpast years.”

Boyd looks to give the Lakers achance in the Catholic League race byswitching things up, starting with hisquarterback. Splitting time under cen-ter will be sophomore Mike Sullivan andsenior L.J. Stolarski, depending on cer-tain game situations.

Stolarski will also play mostly at run-ning back.

Junior Derek Sant, who was thestarting quarterback at the beginning ofthe 2007 season, will switch to the widereceiver position.

On the offensive line, junior NickBurnham will be one of the few return-ing offensive lineman, while Eli Roquewill be the starting center.

On defense, junior John Kroll willswitch from the offensive line to line-backer, while senior Jamie DiDioreturns at cornerback.

Sophomore Mason Roy is expectedto step up in the secondary, and juniorAdam Beans looks to play both line-backer and tight end.

“We only have two or three guyseach returning on the offense anddefensive side,” Boyd said.

The Lakers will face some toughCatholic League competition, includingAllen Park Cabrini and Royal OakShrine, the only two teams to beat OurLady in the regular season last year.

But, Our Lady will begin the yearwith an annual trip to Chicago to takeon Lutheran South. It’s a tradition thatbegan in 2001 and the Lakers have wonall seven meetings.

“It’s a good trip for the parents andballplayers, and it becomes a social-typeof event,” Boyd said. “It puts the

Lakers seeking redemption“We couldn’t get the athletes out

here before, but now we have 20 extrakids. Even the whole basketball teamis out here,” Jamie said.

The Lakers’ main offensive weaponwill be senior running back KevinDavis, who participated in theUniversity of Michigan football campwith Wolverines Coach Rich Rodriguezover the summer and won the camp’sMost Valuable Running Back Award.

“Kevin is one of the fastest runnersin high school in the state ofMichigan,” Jamie said. “He runs a 10.5in the 100 and a 4.32 in the 40.”

Taking the snaps will be juniorquarterback Ryan Christenson, whowill be looking to hook up with ChrisHurst, a 6-5 senior wide receiver.

“Chris is one of those Randy Mossjump-ball kids,” Jamie said. “When weget inside the 20 or 30-yard line, wepretty much feel like we should score

because it’s a mismatch.”Juniors Cameron Fields and Aaron

White will come up from the undefeat-ed 2007 JV squad and are expected tobe dangerous receivers, as well.

“We run a spread offense, 4-wideset,” Jamie said. “It’s like you pickyour poison.”

On special teams, the Lakers havea sure-fire kicker in Rami Yousif, whowas 23-for-23 on extra points last sea-son — a school record — and 3-for-5 onfield goals.

The defense is also loaded with tal-ent, including senior cornerback A.J.Bolden, who stands 6-1 and had fiveinterceptions last season. “We go ondifferent web sites and he’s listed as oneof the top 75 players in the state,” Jamiesaid. “We’re proud to have him as a fig-urehead for our program.”

An intimidating presence for oppo-nents will be senior nose tackle

West Bloomfield’s returning players remember the sting of missing the 2007 playoffs after a season-ending loss to Lake Orion, and don’t want to be inthat position again. The Lakers will get another crack at Lake Orion in the second week of the 2008 season. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K.Lockard)

Marcus Judon, who is listed at 6-4 and330 pounds.

“On defense, nobody can movehim,” Jamie said. “He’s so quick off theball for his size that he demands a dou-ble team. He’s a monster.”

Starting at middle linebacker will besenior Sam Ockwell, whom Jamie callsan extension of the coaching staff.

Also expected to contribute will besenior strong safety Justin Parker, theLakers’ leading tackler from last year.

West Bloomfield faces anothertough schedule against OaklandActivities Association (OAA) RedDivision foes, including a rematch withLake Orion in Week 2; and the Lakersare looking to seize the moment.

“Our seniors are really excitedabout redemption,” Jamie said. “Wedon’t view our schedule as anythingbut going to the playoffs. ❏

— Michael Shelton

fter finishing 5-4 last year andjust missing the playoffs underfirst-year head coach Jim

Thomas, it appears the sky is the limitfor the West Bloomfield Lakers in 2008.

“Our theme this year is turn it up anotch,” said Assistant Coach JamieThomas, Jim’s son. “This is our year. Ifwe’re going to do it, it’s going to be thisyear. We have about seven or eightstarters each returning on offense anddefense and they know the feeling ofthat loss against Lake Orion in the finalgame. We don’t want to be in that posi-tion again.”

Following a string of sub-.500 sea-sons, last season’s success has attract-ed new players to the program.

Eaglets have shot at revengeheartbreaking, 49-36 defeat.

Ironically, East Grand Rapids iswhere St. Mary’s will open the seasonon Aug. 29.

“We had that set up a monthbefore we even got to the (2007) finalbecause they were looking for a firstgame (in 2008),” Porritt said. “We’regoing to play them the next two years. There’s a lot of hype already.”

The Eaglets’ 2008 offense will beled by junior quarterback RobertBolden, who threw for 907 yards andseven touchdowns last season.

“He’s already a great quarterbackand he’s just going to get better,”Porritt said.

Pounding the rock through defens-es will be senior running back SamFioroni, who rushed for 473 yards andnine touchdowns last season.

Senior Dion Sims, the Eaglets’leading receiver in 2007, will alsoreturn after catching for 604 yards

and three touchdowns last year, whilesenior Justin Semmes will be countedon at fullback.

Senior Suave Lavallis will be theteam’s primary kickoff and puntreturner, after amassing a total of 684yards on returns and scoring twotouchdowns last season.

Paving the way will be an offensiveline with only one returning starter, senior tackle Christian Brandt.

“That’s a little scary going into thefirst game, but they mature prettyfast and by the end of the season theyshould be pretty good,” Porritt said.“We have a little bit of a spreadoffense in the shotgun, then we runwhat we call our Ace offense withdouble wings, and we run a powergame off of that.”

On the defensive side, seniorJames Huddleston is expected tostart at defensive end and make a bigimpact, according to Porritt.

There’s already been a lot of hype about the season-opening rematch between St. Mary’s and defending Division 3 state champion East Grand Rapids, according to St. Mary’s Coach George Porritt. The Eaglets battled East Grand Rapids in the 2007 state finals, losing after five overtime sessions. (SpinalColumn Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)

Seniors Devon Shadwick andDe’Andre Perkins will be the primarydefensive tackles.

“We have a lot of kids coming backon defense so we hope that they willjump start us and keep us in ball-games and give us a chance to win,”Porritt said. “We play a lot of hawk, and we’ve got a blitz package off that. Our 4-4 defense is more of an attackstyle.”

With a schedule that includesDetroit Catholic Central, Brother Riceand Davison, the Eaglets will be put tothe test but they believe they are upfor the challenge.

“Our goal is always the state cham-pionship, but to win the CatholicLeague is important because we knowwe play in such a strong league,”Porritt said. “We probably put a lot ofpressure on ourselves to obtain thosegoals.” ❏
